Positively Trek 342: When Did Star Trek Fans Lose Their Imaginations?

When Creativity Gives Way to Complaining

The change in the Klingons’ appearance. Do Romulans have head ridges or not? Is Klingon blood red or pink? Just how powerful are Betazoid senses? And why exactly does a French Starship captain sound British?

Over its 60 years of history, Star Trek has given us many interesting and perplexing questions. As fans, we have come up with theories, hypotheses, and outright speculation to make it all fit. But in recent years, it sometimes feels like that fun theorizing has given way to complaining and cries of “the writers don’t know what they’re doing!” Why is that?

In this episode of Positively Trek, hosts Dan and Barry discuss this issue and ask themselves “when did Star Trek fans lose their imaginations?”

Sometimes they mean more to us, and sometimes… a little less. We discuss episodes from Star Trek, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise.

A Victim of the Culture Wars? Or Something Else?08 avr. 202601:03:12

Positively Trek 336: A Victim of the Culture Wars? Or Something Else?

Our Thoughts on the Cancellation of Starfleet Academy, the People Currently in Charge of Star Trek, and the State of the World

Kind of a mixed bag in this episode of Positively Trek, as hosts Barry and Dan look around at the remnants of the Star Trek universe in the wake of the cancellation of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, which now joins Discovery, Prodigy, Lower Decks, and Strange New Worlds in the pile of Trek series cut down before what should have been their ends. We also talk about the current folks in charge of our beloved franchise, what they have to do with the current state of the real world, and opine on what the future of the Star Trek universe might bring.

Sympathy For the Devil05 déc. 202501:07:13

Positively Trek 321: Sympathy For the Devil

The Villains We Hate to Love

Over the past 60 years, Star Trek has given us a huge range of villains. From the fine Corinthian tones of Ricardo Montalban’s Khan to the silky charisma of Marc Alaimo as Gul Dukat, many villains have become embedded in our memories for various reasons. And sometimes, despite our best intentions, we end up loving those villains… and maybe even having a bit of sympathy for them!

In this episode of Positively Trek, hosts Barry and Dan talk about the villains we might just have a smidgen of sympathy for and why. Some of our picks may surprise you! But we also want to hear from you: who did we leave off our list that you think should be included in the category of sympathetic villains?

Star Trek: Khan Episodes 1 and 2

Khan Noonien Singh has long been thought of as the quintessential Star Trek villain. But is the view of him we get in “Space Seed” and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan the whole picture? Or is there more to this larger-than-life man of history for us to discover?

Positively Trek 307: The Camera Itself Becomes a Character

“What Is Starfleet?” - Strange New Worlds 3x07

Is a Federation just an empire by another name? Is a Starship actually just a Warship cloaked in colloquialism? Newly-declassified archival footage has recently been unearthed: a documentary filmed in the mid-23rd century that aims to answer the question: “What is Starfleet?”

In this episode of Positively Trek, hosts Dan and Barry discuss episode 7 of season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: “What Is Starfleet?” We talk about historical analogues to Starfleet, a unique way of telling a story, the Enterprise’s unorthodox mission, what Starfleet means to the crew of the Enterprise, and what happens when a documentarian becomes the focus of his own documentary.

Positively Trek 297: Support Your Local Convention!

The Mile Zero Fan Summit in Grimshaw, Alberta

Star Trek and Star Wars fans can be found everywhere, and we mean everywhere! It doesn’t matter if you’re from one of the largest cities in the world or from a small farming community in rural Alberta, we guarantee that someone you know or see in your day-to-day life loves settling in for a Babylon 5 marathon, debates online who is the better captain, Sisko or Janeway, or has very strong opinions on how the Millennium Falcon would fare against a Federation starship!

In this episode of Positively Trek, hosts Barry and Dan sit down with Chance and Carolyn Gerk, the organizers of the Mile Zero Fan Summit, a convention being held in the small town of Grimshaw, Alberta on June 7th. We discuss what you can expect at the event, the process of putting it together, and the importance of fostering the fan community in smaller centres. And make sure to join us in Grimshaw on June 7th, when we will be hosting a panel on Star Trek as a Model for a Better Future at the convention!

Positively Trek 294: From Star Trek’s Worst to Star Trek’s Best

“And the Children Shall Lead” and “The City on the Edge of Forever”

In this episode of Positively Trek, hosts Dan and Barry take their cues from one of Dan’s favourite new podcasts: The Best Worst from hosts Meg Bashwiner and Joseph Fink. In their new show, they talk about the worst and best episodes from a classic television series as determined by the IMDB ratings. Their rules dictate that the series in question must have at least 100 episodes, which means they won’t be covering Star Trek: The Original Series! We hope to cover that oversight with this homage to their wonderful podcast as we discuss the classic Trek episodes “And the Children Shall Lead” and “The City on the Edge of Forever.”
