Positively Trek 283: The First Week of September, 2024
The Week Everything Changed - “Past Tense” Parts 1 & 2
It’s the morning of Monday, September 3rd. Podcasters Dan and Barry have decided to record Positively Trek in the early morning hours before work. However, they don’t realize that events have taken place thousands of kilometers away that will change everything forever, thanks to one man: Gabriel Bell.
In this episode of Positively Trek, we’re doing something a little different in honor of the impending Bell Riots and the upending of life as we know it! The first half of this episode is a bit of an improv exercise in which we live through the events of September 1-3, 2024 in the Star Trek universe. In the second half, we talk about the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episodes “Past Tense” parts 1 & 2 and the real world implications of the story.

Sometimes as Star Trek fans, it can feel like we’re all alone in our fandom. Certainly, online spaces have changed this quite a bit, but in our day-to-day lives, it often feels like we are the only Star Trek fan around. But then, the unexpected happens and you make a surprise connection with another Trekkie, Trekker, or casual Star Trek fan, and it suddenly feels like you’ve made a friend for life!
In this episode of Positively Trek, hosts Barry and Dan discuss those times when we’ve made surprise connections with fellow Star Trek fans “in the wild.” We also talk about some stories that were shared with us in the Star Trek Forever Facebook group!
Positively Trek 273: Book Club: The Story We Didn’t Know We Wanted
Dayton Ward: Pliable Truths
When Star Trek: Deep Space Nine hit our television screens in 1993, we were introduced to the planet Bajor, the end of the Cardassian Occupation, and a cast of colorful characters that were very different from the sanitized Starfleet environment of the Enterprise-D on Star Trek: The Next Generation. But what happened just before “Emissary”? How did Starfleet establish a presence in the Bajoran system? How was the withdrawal negotiated? Why did O’Brien decide to transfer to DS9? All of these questions and more are finally answered, over 30 years later, thanks to Dayton Ward’s latest Star Trek novel.
In this episode of the Positively Trek Book Club, hosts Dan Gunther and Bruce Gibson are once again joined by New York Times Bestselling author Dayton Ward to discuss his new novel, Star Trek: The Next Generation: Pliable Truths. We talk about the story of the transition from TNG to DS9 that we have been waiting decades to read!
The double-Trek weeks continue! This week on the Positively Trek podcast, hosts Dan and Bruce talk about Discovery’s mission to establish peaceful contact with “Species Ten-C.” Tarka, however, has all manner of wrenches to throw into that plan!
Meanwhile, on Star Trek: Picard, Jean-Luc and his gang grapple with the circumstances they find in the twisted new reality they inhabit. We talk about “Penance” and give our thoughts on the season thus far.
In the news segment, we discuss the new Star Trek: Strange New Worlds teaser trailer as well as the recent news that Star Trek: Picard’s third seasonhas wrapped production.
Positively Trek 182: Book Club: Terok Nor: Night of the Wolves
The Cardassian Occupation of Bajor continues as Resistance fighters carry out attacks on their Cardassian oppressors, fighting for the freedom of their world. The tales of many characters from Deep Space Nine are explored in this novel, featuring the beginnings of their stories as Bajor suffers under the bootheels of the Cardassian Union.
In this episode of the Positively Trek Book Club, hosts Dan and Bruce discuss Terok Nor: Night of the Wolves, the second book in the trilogy, written by S.D. Perry & Britta Dennison. We talk about the changes in storytelling between books one and two, Lenaris Holem and Pullock V, Opaka and Gar Osen, Astraea, Natima Lang, Meru and Dukat, Ro Laren and the loss of innocence, Odo’Ital, the Liberation of Gallitep, and wrap up with our final thoughts and ratings.
A reminder that the beginning of the podcast is spoiler-free, and we get into spoilers in the second part.

Positively Trek 177: Book Club: Terok Nor - Day of the Vipers
This Book’s Not Gonna Have a Happy Ending
The Occupation: its legacy looms large over the entire Star Trek: Deep Space Nine series, with the scars of that brutal era still felt by Bajor years later. However, not much has been told about the start of the occupation; what was Bajor like before the Cardassians came? What drove Cardassia to commit the crimes of the occupation? The subject of this week’s Book Club episode explores these questions and more!
Before we finish with The Lost Era, there are just three more books to cover: The Terok Nor trilogy, chronicling the Cardassian Occupation of Bajor. In this episode of the Positively Trek Book Club, hosts Dan and Bruce talk about the first of these: Day of the Vipers by James Swallow. We discuss the characters both familiar and new, life on Bajor prior to the occupation, the state of Cardassia, dramatic irony, personal stories, scapegoats, the rise of the occupation, and wrap up with our final thoughts and ratings.
