5 Things Your Podcast Doesn't Need: Part 412 Sep 202400:16:37

The "5 Things Your Podcast Doesn't Need" series rolls on and today, in Part 4, we are taking a slight detour away from the attention spans of your listeners and focusing on an item that many podcasts feature, but don't necessarily need.

As podcasting has evolved, many things have changed and become available to this medium. One of them is the ease in which we can access podcast content on our devices.

Back in the day, the term "PODcast" was literal because you uploaded "internet radio episodes" to your iPod and consumed at will. This was a newfangled thing (as was downloading music onto a portable rectangle), and many shows featured the word "podcast" so people knew what they were accessing.

Today, the question needs to be asked: Does the word "podcast" still need to be used?

I'm exploring this and more in today's episode. Enjoy!

5 Things Your Podcast Doesn't Need: Part 310 Sep 202400:10:23

Want to know the most annoying word on a podcast? Then this episode of Podcast Theory is for you!

This is Part 3 of 5 in my series "5 Things Your Podcast Doesn't Need" and today, I'm covering another item that keep your listener from getting to the heart of your content once they click play.

If you listened to Parts 1 & 2 in this series, you discovered that attention spans are at an all-time low for adults (clocking in at a whopping 8.25 seconds).

With that number in mind, getting your listener to the main reason they clicked play on your podcast episodes is at an all-time high.

In this episode, you'll discover something that can easily be removed from your production and, if need be, used in a better way to keep your listeners invested until they reach the end of your episode.

Podcast Therapy: Showing Up For All The Right Reasons | Podcast Theory Live 7.12.2412 Jul 202400:21:40

REPLAY OF PODCAST THEORY LIVE 7.12.24

It's the return of Podcast Therapy!

In Season 3, I started doing these sessions once a week and I'm happy to report this series is making a comeback.

In today's installment, I'm going to talk about why it's important to show up to your podcast for all the right reasons.

If you haven't heard my story, I got into podcasting out of spite. I had a troll confront me on Twitter who happened to be a podcaster and I wanted to prove I could do it better than him.

I have no idea what I thought I was going to accomplish with that mindset, but I was incredibly fortunate to discover my calling...partially by accident.

Almost 10 years later and I'm still going strong, leaning into podcasting and livestreaming pretty much every day of the week.

6 Valuable Habits That Will Make You a Better Podcaster02 Feb 202100:10:26

On a daily basis, you should be focusing on developing good habits that improve your life. Whether it be habits that help you on a personal level or a professional level, committing to daily action will help those actions become habits.

According to the book The One Thing, forming a solid habit takes 66 days, not 21 days as is commonly shared. The more time spent making a certain activity part of your everyday life, the more it becomes ingrained in your psyche. You do it unconsciously without even a thought.

As a podcaster, there are certain habits you'll want to incorporate into your practices to ensure you're getting the most from your efforts. Consistency is the unspoken force behind developing any habit. If you don't perform actions consistently, you can't develop a habit. Sporadic action won't lead to results, they'll just lead to more sporadic action.

In Episode 87 of Pod Theory, I'm talking about developing strong habits that will not only make you a better podcaster, but a stronger person who attacks his or her day with power and passion. The six habits I'm sharing have all helped me develop my podcast, my business, and my daily method of attack.

Don't Expect Results Without Putting In the Work29 Jan 202100:09:24

The Internet has a funny way of making us believe that goals can be reached without putting in the hard work it takes to accomplish them. Well...maybe you need to hear this and maybe you don't, but I'm using this platform to say...that's complete bullsh*t!

There is no better feeling of accomplishment than achieving a goal you know you had to work like hell to conquer. Just having it handed to you will not help you grow, will not help you learn, and will not help you get better. This applies to podcasting as much as it does life as a whole. In order to get the best results, you have to be willing to put in the work required of you AND take the lumps that may occur along the way.

On Episode 85 of Pod Theory, I go on a bit of a rant about expecting results without the work. About showing up for the whole game instead of just the highlights. About being patient in your quest to build a great podcast and not expecting results to be handed to you without effort. It may just be the message you need to hear today.

How to Interview a Celebrity or VIP26 Jan 202100:07:32

Landing a VIP, celebrity, musician, athlete, or any person who is considered a big deal in your niche is a pretty big accomplishment. Clearly, this person saw some value in what you're doing and is willing to spend time with you on your show. Congratulate yourself, that's good stuff!

Now...stop worrying about f*cking up the interview! I've seen this brought up in various podcast groups that I'm in. People don't want to screw things up with their big time guest, so they get nervous and begin to overly worry about it...not even realizing the hardest part (getting this person on the show in the first place) has already been handled!

On Episode 82 of Pod Theory, I'm going to share some insight on how to handle interviewing a VIP on your podcast. People, no matter their station in life, want to be treated with respect...and like a normal person. In this episode, you'll learn some easy-to-implement strategies to help you make your VIP interview one for the ages.

Who's the VIPiest person you've ever interviewed on your podcast? Drop me a line on Twitter and let me know.

How to Stay Focused On Podcast Preparation25 Jan 202100:07:54

Time management is one of the most important elements in your life and, if you're like most people, you have a hard time maximizing the minutes in your day. It's understandable. We live in a world filled with distractions and interruptions, all pulling us in different directions and taking our attention from our most important work.

In order to truly master time, you must develop the discipline to block out distractions, nip interruptions in the bud, and make certain points of your day unbreakable appointments with yourself. This will ensure 100% of your focus stays where it needs to be and, ultimately, helps you achieve the best results.

This is very important in podcasting. You must spend a certain amount of time on your show to ensure all your productions succeed. And in Episode 81 of Pod Theory, I'm going to share some tips and strategies to help you stay focused on preparation, production, and more. I'll also give you my candid thoughts on multi-tasking.....

What are YOUR thoughts on multi-tasking? Find me on Twitter and let me know.

Can Shorter, More Frequent Podcasts Bring You Better Results?22 Jan 202100:08:28

When you're laying out the initial plans for your podcast, one of the big components you need to decide on is the format and approximate length of your episodes. You don't want to be all over the map with your format and absolutely do not want to produce episodes that are five minutes in length one week, then an hour the next, then 10 minutes the week after that, and so on.

Depending on how you want to present your content, you may decide that a short-form podcast that is delivered in more frequent doses will serve you and your results in a more productive way. The important thing to do is commit to a certain content presentation and stick to it consistently with each episode you produce.

In Episode 80 of Pod Theory, I'm going to rap about shorter, more frequently published podcast content and help you determine if it's the best course of action for you. Whether you're just starting your podcast or you have episodes released, this information will help you make the best decision for the long-term planning of your show.

How to Repurpose Other Recorded Content For Your Podcast21 Jan 202100:06:33

Repurposing podcast content is a great way to work smarter, not harder. You can use audio clips from your podcast to share across the web. You can make video of your podcast recordings and use those on YouTube. OR you can reshoot your podcast content as a full-fledged video from scratch. Your research notes, bullet points, and scripts can be repurposed for blog posts, show notes, email newsletters, webinars, and training materials.

But...does it work in reverse? Should you use audio from video recordings or webinars or live training as a podcast episode?

In Episode 79 of Pod Theory, I'm going to answer those questions as I explore repurposing content recorded for other purposes as podcast content. There's a right way to do this. And a wrong way. Push that play button to learn both.

5 Ways to Get Reviews For Your Podcast20 Jan 202100:07:21

Reviews help you gain credibility for your podcast. The positive ones reinforce that you are an authority on your subject matter and give new listeners some insight on what they'll gain by listening to your podcast. And the negative reviews, while not always popular, can help you look at your podcast from a different perspective and make adjustments to your approach if necessary.

Additionally, the more reviews you can get, the more algorithms will recognize your show as valuable to the podcast listening community and, thusly, your show will rank better when listeners look for shows in your niche.

So, how do you get more reviews for your podcast? In Episode 78 of Pod Theory, I'm going to share five tips you can implement to bring more positive focus to your show by way of ratings and reviews from your audience.

What have you done to successfully gain more reviews for your podcast? Hit me up on Twitter and let me know your process!

Let's Remove the Unneeded Element of Perfection From Podcasting | Podcast Theory Live 7.10.2410 Jul 202400:14:48

REPLAY OF PODCAST THEORY LIVE 7.10.24

With many things in life, the pursuit of perfection will derail us early in the game or, because perfection seems unattainable, prevents us from taking the initial steps to getting started.

I've got news for you: perfection IS unattainable. And thinking you can produce a perfect podcast is a fool's errand.

Today on Podcast Theory Live, I'm sharing my thoughts on perfection in the podcast space and why we need to do our part to make it go away.

I'll also share how livestreaming has helped me lean into this belief even more - leading me to embrace some of the flaws and work harder to communicate a clear message to my audience.

Stop Spamming the Podcast Community. Do This Instead.19 Jan 202100:06:59

Spam sucks. It sucks when you get it and it sucks worse when you're supplying it to your community and you don't even know it.

If you are constantly in a habit of selling yourself, your brand, and/or your podcast to people while never providing value, guidance, and advice to those you're communicating with, you, my friend, are spamming.

In Episode 77 of Pod Theory, I'm going to tell you why you should never spam your podcast community and what you should be doing instead to establish yourself as an authority, as a resource, and to get your fellow community members seeking more from you. In addition, I'll explain why you should NEVER add someone's email address to your list without their permission. If someone starts receiving email from you and they never asked for it, that's spam, too.

You've Podfaded. Now, How Do You Bounce Back?18 Jan 202100:07:31

Podfading - when your podcast disappears without warning. It can happen for a variety of reasons, such as not building a solid content plan and sticking to it, major life events taking place, losing passion for your podcast, or simply running out of ideas for new episodes.

Podfading is something you want to avoid at all costs. That said, if something takes place and you can't and you're ready to get your podcast back on track, it's imperative you take the right approach to relaunch your show successfully.

In Episode 76 of Pod Theory, I'm going to share some tips and pointers for bringing your podcast back to life and getting your audience members back on board after you've podfaded. I'll be sharing how you should communicate with your listeners, what kind of approach you should take as you relaunch, how many episodes you should have ready to go before announcing your return, and more.

If you've ever podfaded, what did you do to successfully return to the party? Hook up with me on Twitter and let me know how you made your comeback!

Why 2021 Will Be 'The Year of the Podcast'15 Jan 202100:08:06

With the incredible growth podcasting saw in 2020, it's hard to envision 2021 delivering an encore performance.

Or is it?

A lot may have happened last year, but podcasting in 2021 has confidently said 'Hold my beer.' Will we hit 3 million active podcasts? Can we exceed 120 million monthly podcast listeners? How many brands will start using podcasting as its primary content strategy? Will a new platform unseat Apple for podcasting supremacy?

All this and more will be answered in the upcoming months, which leads me to believe that 2021 will be a year where the spotlight shines even brighter on this medium, thus making it 'The Year of the Podcast.' In Episode 75 of Pod Theory, I'm going to break down some reasons why, as well as emphasize, once again, the importance of taking action and getting your podcast into gear TODAY!

What is one thing you'll be looking for in 2021 that will make it 'The Year of the Podcast' for you? Find me on Twitter and let me know your thoughts.

How to Plan Your 2021 Podcasting Goals13 Jan 202100:07:26

The turn of the calendar to a new year always brings about those exciting feelings of reflection, change, and action. Everyone gets all geared up to achieve their New Years Resolutions and, like clockwork, falls back into a familiar rut by February and never really makes any progress. It's a story as old as time.

New Years Resolutions are garbage. People give up on them so quickly because they're just words in the air. There's no commitment to actively changing their habits, therefore progress is derailed before it ever has a chance to begin.

Don't let that happen to you. With your personal AND your podcasting goals for this year, make sure you're doing your part to set realistic, achievable goals and, most importantly, taking all the steps necessary to see them through to completion.

In Episode 73 of Pod Theory, I'm going to share a very simple template for helping you set goals for your podcast in the new year. This plan will help you apply thought, meaning, and clarity to what you want to achieve with your show, as well as help you develop the action steps necessary to make it all come together.

What's your #1 goal for your podcast this year? Find me on Twitter and let me know what you have in store to make your show succeed.

5 Things 2020 Taught Us About Podcasting12 Jan 202100:09:13

2020 was an unprecedented year. 2020 was a dumpster fire. 2020 was so unpredictable. 2020 brought us a 'new normal.' And so on. And so on.

We've heard all the cliches and, yes, I probably dropped a couple of them on this episode. But despite the fact that 2020 was something none of us ever expected or could've possibly prepared for, it was still a year. It still happened. For better or for worse. And for all of us in the podcasting world, 2020 brought us some unexpected positives.

In Episode 72 of Pod Theory, I'm going to take a look back on 2020 and share five things those 365 days taught us about podcasting. From the rise of long-distance recording to the massive explosion of the platform overall, there are some silver linings you can grab on to.

2020 may have delivered a lot of things we never asked for. But it also brought us some podcast adaptations that will help us succeed in 2021 and beyond.

What is one positive 2020 brought you and your podcast? Hit me up on Twitter and let me know!

Why It's Important to Back Up ALL of Your Content11 Jan 202100:07:18

Losing all of your content is not something you believe will happen to you. Until it does. And when it does, believe me...it sucks!

I just recently experienced this as my website and email unexpectedly crashed and I lost years of work. Fortunately, SOME of my work was backed up and other pieces of content were recovered. But, for the most part, I've had to rebuild my website from the ground up.

On Episode 71, I'm going to share something that SHOULD be a no-brainer for us all, but, as I recently proved, it's something that can be overlooked...and that's backing up your content. Hold on tight as you'll hear my story from Christmas 2020 when, in what I see as one of the most 2020 things that could happen, I lost a sizeable chunk of my content. I'll also share why you should back up all of your podcast content in case something similar were to ever happen to you in the future.

3 Reasons Why Consistency is Critical to Your Podcast25 Dec 202000:08:39

If you've listened to any other episodes of Pod Theory, you know consistency is one of most talked about subjects on this show. Without it, nothing good will come from your efforts. If your audio quality is great one episode, then terrible the next, no one will know what you're going to bring them from one show to another. If your content hits on all cylinders today, but clearly showcases that you phoned it in the next, no one is going to get hooked on your podcast. And if you start getting inconsistent with new episode releases, you may as well pack it up and head home.

There are just too many podcasts out there for people to choose from. And if you think that any listener you've gained is going to keep coming back while you fall deeper and deeper into a pit of inconsistency, you are sadly mistaken. They may hang out for a little bit out of habit, but soon they'll discover another podcast that does deliver with consistency. And once you've lost them and their time to another podcast, it's extremely difficult to get them back.

In Episode 70 of Pod Theory, I'm going to share three reasons why consistency is critical to your podcast. These aren't the only reasons consistency is king, but they're towards the top of the list and will help you understand why inconsistent habits will stop any podcast dead in its tracks.

How Niching Down Your Content Will Help Your Podcast Grow24 Dec 202000:06:39

Have you ever come across a company that offers so many solutions, it's nearly impossible to determine what they actually specialize in? This is a common trap (one that I've fallen into before) and, despite it seeming logical to offer as many solutions as possible for a potential customer, it actually hurts your opportunities because no one can tell if you can truly solve their problem.

With any content strategy, it's important to keep a tight focus on the message you're delivering. If you're all over the place, people won't know what point you're trying to make. But if you have laser focus on one objective, not only will you stand out to those in need of help with said objective, you'll make yourself easier to find.

On Episode 69 of Pod Theory, I'm going to explain why tightening your content focus and niching down can help your podcast grow. I'll also be sharing how podcasts should be designed to be value drivers and the more emphasis you put on niching down and delivering content that offers solutions to specific issues, the more value listeners will find in your content.

REPLAY OF PODCAST THEORY LIVE 7.9.24

I've been part of the podcasting world in one way, shape, or form since 2015 and, without question, I've seen a lot of things change, evolve, even go away completely.

Yesterday, I was building out a new video series and reflecting on how far I've come over the past decade in regards to confidence, delivery, speaking ability, and sharing my message in a clear, concise fashion.

It got me wondering: if I was coming into podcasting right now, for the very first time, what would I do differently today that I didn't do 10 years ago?

On this episode of Podcast Theory Live, I'm going to share my thoughts. If you're in the position of getting a new podcast launched or just broke into the podcasting scene, come learn from my mistakes so you can do things better than me!

Why Podcasting is Not a Get Rich Quick Scheme23 Dec 202000:07:04

One of the reasons people start podcasts is because they think it's some kind of fast money grab. If that's the case, damn, am I doing it wrong.

The truth is, it's not a fast money grab. In fact, podcasting is nowhere near a get rich quick deal. It takes time, patience, and a lot of hard work to build an entity that can, one day, prove to be lucrative. But if you think riches will fall at your boots just because you start a podcast, I highly recommend you don't start a podcast.

In Episode 68 of Pod Theory, I'm going to share why podcasting is not a get rich quick scheme and how you should view podcasting for your overall efforts. I'm also going to share the RIGHT reasons for starting a podcast and why you need patience to make it all come together.

4 Things to Avoid When Recording a Podcast22 Dec 202000:08:09

Creating a high-quality final product is imperative to the success of your podcast. Poor audio quality, inconsistent content, background noise, and many other factors can easily derail your show and send listeners back to the search function of their favorite podcast app looking for a new show to consume.

There are many things you want to keep in mind when recording your podcast so your final product does its job, and in Episode 67 of Pod Theory, I'm going to share four of those items with you in greater detail. The goal is to captivate your listeners with every episode you release, and keeping your production tight will help you do that and much more!

How Many Co-Hosts is Too Many?21 Dec 202000:08:34

What is the right number of co-hosts to have on your podcast? There really isn't a right or wrong answer to this question. It boils down to how you choose to deliver your content and how many personalities it will take to make that happen effectively.

When determining how many voices to feature on your show, it's important to understand what that entails. More voices = more potential for over talk, more potential for conversations to go astray, and more time spent editing your podcast and trimming content not necessary for your final product.

In Episode 66 of Pod Theory, I'm going to share some thoughts on a good number for your co-host count. Again, I'm not right, I'm not wrong. But having the proper number of voices on your show helps keep your message clear, helps keep editing time reasonable, and helps listeners become more emotionally invested in your podcast.

How many hosts does your podcast have and how does it work for you? Connect with me on Twitter and share!

How to Build an Optimal Podcast Listener Profile18 Dec 202000:07:29

What is an Optimal Podcast Listener Profile? It's a way of determining the exact person you want listening to your podcast by drilling down to characteristics that allow you to connect and engage in a seemingly 1:1 fashion.

Building an optimal listener profile allows you to identify components of your listeners that will ultimately help you build your collective audience. Targeting each of these factors will give you an edge when it comes to creating content. If you don't have an idea of who should be listening to your podcast, it will be hard to map out what topics you should be focusing on.

In Episode 65 of Pod Theory, I'm going to explain what an Optimal Podcast Listener Profile is all about, why it's an important exercise you should conduct for your podcast (regardless of whether it's new or has been established), and how to build your profile today.

Why Every Podcast You Publish Needs a Call To Action17 Dec 202000:06:29

If your podcast doesn't have a Call To Action, you're missing a HUGE opportunity to connect with your audience on a deeper level. Podcast listeners are some of the most loyal and engaged people on earth and if you provide them value in your content, they know you'll provide value when you point them to your website, your social media, your products, etc.

A Call To Action is how you get them further entrenched in your message. And without one, you run the risk of letting listeners slip away without establishing a true connection with you, your brand, and your mission.

On Episode 64 of Pod Theory, I'm going to share why your podcast absolutely needs a Call To Action. I'll also provide some examples that you can implement on your podcast the second this show ends, as well as a powerful statistic that further validates the need for a CTA on every episode you produce.

Don't Fixate On Getting a Million Downloads. Focus On This...16 Dec 202000:06:45

It can be very easy to get wrapped up in the number of downloads your podcast receives. It's much like waiting anxiously for the number of likes your latest Facebook post gets or the number of retweets you get on Twitter. It validates that people like what you're putting out, right?

Well sometimes, the vanity metrics grab hold of our psyches and start to play crazy tricks with our heads...like telling us we aren't doing something right.

But I'm here to tell you the number of downloads you get (especially at the beginning of your podcasting journey) is not indicative of the work you're doing. It takes time and effort to build your audience and keeping too much of your focus on your download stats will keep you from pouring your attention into an important factor that will give your podcast strength and longevity.

In Episode 63, I'm going to tell you why your focus should not be on getting a million downloads for your podcast. Instead, it should be on........

Don't Sell Your Product or Service On Your Podcast. Sell This Instead.15 Dec 202000:07:58

One of the greatest things the Internet has given us and continues to give us is connection to options. No matter what you're looking for, whether it be a product, service, brand or company, podcast, blog post, video, or general information, everything you need is right at your fingertips.

But this also means that the space in which your brand exists can be crowded and noisy, making it difficult to stand out. In today's business landscape, simply having a product or service is just table stakes. In order to succeed, you need to focus on engagement, community building, and becoming part of your customer's everyday lives.

On Episode 62 of Pod Theory, I'm going to explain why you shouldn't exhaust yourself doing nothing but selling your product and/or service on your podcast. I'm also going to share what you should be focusing on instead and what will help you establish a stronger connection with your listeners and, ultimately, amplify your brand voice to a wider base.

Podcasting and COVID-19: A Roundtable Discussion11 Dec 202001:12:02

The coronavirus pandemic has rendered one of the most significant impacts on society in the last century. The results of this impact have seen businesses close, processes change, and, unfortunately, hundreds of thousands of people die.

COVID-19 has forced us into home schooling, working from home, and, as podcasters, finding new ways to create content. If there's a silver lining to be found in all of this craziness, it's how we've been able to implement technology into our practices to ensure we stay connected and keep the podcast content coming.

Welcome to the first-ever roundtable discussion on Pod Theory! On this 60th episode of the show, I am joined by fellow podcasters to discuss the impact the pandemic has had on podcasters, some of the positives that have been uncovered through these difficult times, and where we all see the podcast medium going in 2021 and beyond.

I am happy to be joined for this roundtable discussion by:

  • Simon Okelo - Host of the African Father in America Podcast - find it on your favorite podcast platform! Also, you can connect with Simon on Twitter.
  • David Rosen - Host of the Piecing It Together Podcast (as well as a few others he'll discuss on today's show). You can find Piecing It Together on your favorite podcast app. You can connect with David on Twitter and all his shows at bydavidrosen.com.
  • C. Peter Clough - Founder of the International Podcast Alliance, an organization designed to support and help podcasters grow and succeed. His new podcast will go live in January. You can connect with Peter at podcastalliance.org and on Twitter, too.
  • Steve Scheboth - Co-Host of the Hop Nation USA Podcast. Hop Nation is available on all podcast platforms and can be found on Twitter and Instagram @hopnationusa.

The Most Successful Podcasters Do This...10 Dec 202000:06:52

A successful podcast doesn't just happen. It's the result of thought, strategy, execution, and a ton of hard work. As a podcaster, you'll learn that each episode you produce comes with its own set of challenges, including but not limited to finding a guest, preparing questions, researching topics, scheduling, recording, post-production, publication, and marketing.

As I've preached on past episodes of Pod Theory, the more you know what lays ahead as you get into podcasting, the less surprised you'll be as you make podcasting a major component of your content strategy.

On Episode 59 of Pod Theory, I'm talking about what the most successful podcasters do to produce a high-quality, consistently engaging show. This will give you an idea of the importance of time management for your efforts and not shorting yourself in the areas where your attention is needed the most.

What is one habit you practice that has helped make your podcasting efforts successful? Hit me up on Twitter and let me know what's worked for you!

3 Ways to Avoid Podfade Like a Podcast Pro | Podcast Theory Live 7.8.2408 Jul 202400:25:42

REPLAY OF PODCAST THEORY LIVE 7.8.24

One of the biggest epidemics in the podcast space is podfade (when a show's creator stops releasing new content out of the blue with no announcement).

A recent statistic that was shared in one of my communities is that a whopping 90% of podcasters don't get beyond their THIRD episode.

That's a total shame. Especially when you consider the creators of these shows most likely had a ton of energy and a ton of passion for bringing their podcast to the world.

But once the work began and a million listeners didn't flood in, the passion waned.

Of course, you and I both realize those are unrealistic expectations. But often times, podcasters and creators can get too fixated on the wrong metrics, losing sight of why they started their podcast in the first place.

Today on Podcast Theory Live, I'm going to dive into the subject of podfade and share three ways it can be avoided like the plague.

If you want to succeed in podcasting, a commitment to building your show and your skills over time is imperative.

Click that play button and discover how to make it happen!

4 Ways to Avoid Podfade09 Dec 202000:10:46

What the hell is "podfade," you ask? Well, up until just recently, I never realized it was a term. But the definition of the term is exactly why I started this podcast and shifted the efforts of my business to helping professionals produce a better podcast.

On Episode 58 of Pod Theory, I'm breaking down what podfade is, as well as helping you understand why you want nothing to do with it. In addition, I'll be sharing four ways you can avoid experiencing podfade with your show and ensure your efforts serve you and your brand for the long haul.

The Biggest Mistake I Made When I Began Podcasting08 Dec 202000:07:30

When it comes to podcasting, mistakes happen. No matter what point you're at on the podcast experience timeline, chances are excellent you coughed up the ball at some point along the way. And that's OK. It happens to all of us!

Mistakes are learning experiences. When you make one, it's up to you to see where you went wrong, evaluate what you could've done better, and make sure you file it away so you can do better the next time. You can't change the past. But you can dictate how you handle things in the future. If you didn't experience a mistake, you'd never know how to improve and succeed when you're faced with a similar situation down the road.

In Episode 57 of Pod Theory, I share the biggest mistake I made when I began podcasting and the story that goes along with it. As I reflect back to that period, I'm happy things went the way they did. Why? Because I learned from my mistakes and I became a better podcaster for it. I'll also be talking about how you should handle your mistakes when it comes to the production of your podcast.

What's the biggest mistake YOU'VE ever made in podcasting? Find me on Twitter and tell me your story.

4 Ways to Develop a Deeper Connection With Your Audience07 Dec 202000:09:45

Podcasts allow you to establish a strong connection with your listeners. The stronger that connection, the more trust they establish with you. The more trust they have, the more they'll recommend your podcast to others, leave reviews for your podcast, answer calls to action, and support your brand in whatever capacity they can.

With millions of podcasts jockeying for a listener's attention, building the strong connection you need to increase loyalty is not an easy task. In order to get the results you desire, it's important to stay on the cutting edge of your listener's needs...and to go the extra mile to establish a deeper connection that will keep them coming back to your show without thinking twice.

In Episode 56 of Pod Theory, I'm sharing four tactics that go beyond the "status quo" of connecting and take your relationship with your customers to a new level. These strategies will not only help you stand out in a flurry of competing brands and podcasts, they'll allow you to connect in a way that increases your audience's buy-in AND gets you direct feedback so you can continue improving upon your efforts.

How do you build strong connections with your audience? Connect with me on Twitter and fill me in!

Where is Your Money Best Spent On Your Podcast?04 Dec 202000:08:11

At some point in your podcasting plight, money will need to be invested in your efforts. Whether it be on recording equipment, advertising, voice-overs, art, hosting, or other aspects that bring your show to life, you can't make your podcast come together without spending SOME money.

The good news is, starting a podcast is not an expensive proposition. In fact, once you purchase your equipment and take care of your startup costs, expenses going forward are very manageable. Like any initiative you embark upon, you'll need to determine how much you can invest into your podcast on a monthly basis and, from there, decide what areas will provide the most return on said investment.

On Episode 55 of Pod Theory, I'm going to provide my thoughts on the three best places to spend your money when it comes to your podcast. Each will provide a boost to your efforts and help your podcast expand at a more rapid pace. We'll also go over a basic budget and what you should be doing before you start investing your money into paid advertising.

Where do you feel is the best place to invest money for your podcast? Connect with me on Twitter and let me know how you put your budget to work.

With over a million podcasts going strong in today's podcast space, there are millions of people for you to connect with, learn from, and support. Every one of us is doing something different with our podcasting approaches. And learning from each other is going to help us all grow and thrive in the podcasting world.

How to Produce a Quality Podcast Outro02 Dec 202000:04:52

As your podcast episode reaches its conclusion, the most important thing for you to do is give your listener something to do. Something that keeps them connected to you and your brand. Something that enhances your efforts. This is called a Call to Action, or CTA.

On Episode 53 of Pod Theory, I'm going to help you craft a quality, meaningful outro for your podcast. From choosing the right CTA to inviting your listeners back for your next show, making sure you have all your bases covered with your outro will result in a lasting impression that stays with your listener until your next podcast episode releases.

How to Structure Your Podcast Episodes01 Dec 202000:12:15

Structure isn't always the sexiest subject to cover. But when you think about it, if we didn't live in a world with some semblance of structure, life would be chaos.

Likewise, a podcast without structure will come off as chaotic to your audience. Listeners come to depend on a certain level of predictability with the shows they follow. And for you, having a structure in place for your episodes will allow you to deliver content in a desirable way, get more listeners hooked on your efforts, and maximize your creativity from the beginning of your podcast to the end. Plus, structure will simplify your post-production efforts, allowing you to focus your time on other initiatives that help your podcast grow.

In Episode 52 of Pod Theory, I'm going to share some insights on how to structure your podcast episodes. Whether you record solo, feature guests, or have multiple co-hosts on the mics, following a basic structure will make for a better final production. Your podcast is your pulpit for storytelling...and a good story, from front to back, always has structure.

What is your favorite podcast episode style and structure? Connect with me on Twitter and let's rap about it.

How to Produce a Quality Podcast Intro30 Nov 202000:10:06

How do you make a first impression on your listener? From a visual standpoint, your podcast art, show title, and show description should paint a pretty clear picture of what a listener is about to experience as they dive into your show.

From an audio standpoint, your podcast intro is the first thing a listener is going to hear to connect them with your podcast. You want to be sure you use this space to create something that's impactful and memorable while, at the same time, informs your listener who you are, what your podcast is about, and what they'll gain by listening to the episode that lays ahead.

On Episode 51 of Pod Theory, I'm going to cover how you can produce a quality intro for your podcast. One that gets stuck in someone's head, fits into the appropriate timeframe, lets your listener know what your show is all about, and why the content you're about to share is going to help them solve a problem, learn something new, or provide them with the entertainment they seek.

Viral is Not as Good as Consistent26 Nov 202000:06:26

Getting content to go viral can be exciting and generate some buzz around your podcast, social media, website, etc. But in the grand scheme of things, viral content is not an approach you can bank on. You can't control whether something will go viral...

...but what you can control is consistently producing quality content. Producing quality content on a consistent basis will do much more for your long-term success. And a podcast is the ultimate vehicle for creating consistent content.

On Episode 49 of Pod Theory, I'm going to share why producing consistent content with your podcast trumps viral content every time. Consistency is in your control and could even lead to something going viral...which should be treated as a bonus.

What do you do to keep your content consistent? Connect with me on Twitter and let me know your approach!

Make the Main Thing the ONLY Thing | Podcast Theory Live 7.2.2402 Jul 202400:13:17

REPLAY OF PODCAST THEORY LIVE 7.2.24

In podcasting, just like life, we often find ourselves focusing on too many things at once. When we do this, it spreads our bandwidth thin and we put less emphasis where it needs to be.

These overwhelming feelings are often the driving force behind those ugly words we hate to hear:

Depression.

Burnout.

Podfade.

Failure.

But let's take a moment to simplify things.

What if we just focused on ONE thing...the MAIN thing...and let everything else fall into place?

In this episode of Podcast Theory Live, I'm digging into the philosophy of focusing on one thing and making it the main thing...with a podcasting spin, of course!

Credit where credit's due: Alex Sanfilippo, Founder of PodMatch, spoke about this during his presentation at the Empowered Podcasting Conference and his point resonated very strongly with me.

No matter what your main thing is, make sure it's front and center with everything you do.

Why Building Your Audience Outside of Social Media Is Critical...Now More Than Ever25 Nov 202000:12:09

There's no question social media has changed. Organic reach is all but over and networks like Facebook and Instagram are pay to play. This significantly impacts the role social media plays in your efforts and furthers the belief that building an audience outside of social media is crucial to your long-term success.

Social media still has value. But you need to determine how to make it work for you while implementing other time-tested methods into the growth of your podcast.

On Episode 48, I'm breaking down why now, more than ever, building your audience outside of social media is critical to your success. I'm going to cover ways social media has shifted its focus and why you have to adapt to those shifts, as well as how initiatives like SEO, email, and others present better opportunities to grow your podcast audience.

How do you use social media for your podcast? Connect with me on Twitter to discuss.

The Undeniable Connection Between Social Media and Your Podcast24 Nov 202000:06:21

Social media and podcasting seemingly go hand in hand. If you've built a strong social media following, you're going to use those platforms to communicate with your audience and let them know you have a podcast. Likewise, on your podcast, you're going to encourage your listeners to follow you on social media.

It's also been proven that podcast listeners are more apt to follow brands on social media. Therefore, having both can help you acquire a larger audience and more customers for your products and services.

In Episode 47 of Pod Theory, I'm covering the undeniable connection social media and your podcast have. That said, is social media mandatory for growing your podcast audience? I'm going to touch on this and set the table for Episode 48, where I'll cover that aspect of the podcast/social media connection in more detail.

How Did COVID-19 Change Podcasting?23 Nov 202000:07:55

The coronavirus pandemic has rendered one of the most significant impacts on society in the last century. The results of this impact have seen businesses close, processes change, and, unfortunately, hundreds of thousands of people die.

COVID-19 has forced us into home schooling, working from home, and, as podcasters, finding new ways to create content. If there's a silver lining to be found in all of this craziness, it's how we've been able to implement technology into our practices to ensure we stay connected and keep the podcast content coming.

In Episode 46 of Pod Theory, I'm going to break down some of the nuances COVID-19 has brought to the podcasting landscape. From long-distance recording to podcasts being created in a 100% virtual environment, this time period has brought some new practices that won't go away anytime soon.

How has COVID-19 affected your podcasting efforts? Connect with me on Twitter and let's talk about it.
