Titus Andronicus - Episode 4 - Wash Those Hands12 oct. 202600:37:14
Titus pleads for his son’s lives but the Tribunes are unmoved. Lucius draws his sword to rescue his brothers but is overpowered and banished from Rome. Chiron and Demetrius mock Lavinia after assaulting and mutilating her, leaving her to wander the forest alone without hands or tongue. Marcus Andronicus finds her and brings her back to Titus. The family breaks down in overwhelming grief until Aaron the Moore arrives with a message from Saturninus: if Titus cuts off one of his own hands, the emperor will spare the lives of Martius and Quintus. Titus agrees but instead of getting what was promised, a messenger returns carrying Titus’s severed hand and the severed heads of his sons. His sanity cracking, Titus orders Lucius to raise an army of Goths to march against Rome. Titus Andronicus - Episode 3 - The Better You Love Me05 oct. 202600:28:56
Please be advised: This episode contains graphic sounds of sexual violence and may be inappropriate or triggering for some listeners. Marcus, Titus and his remaining three sons assemble outside the Roman forest at dawn, preparing for the morning hunt. Titus warns them all to be careful around the new emperor, Saturninus, before he arrives with his newly-crowned Empress Tamora, Bassianus, Lavinia and Tamora’s sons (Chiron and Demetrius). As they depart into the woods, Chiron and Demetrius plan to use the chaos of the hunt to assault Lavinia. Deep in the forest, Aaron the Moor buries a bag of gold under a tree as part of a plot to frame Titus’s sons. Tamora finds him there and tries to seduce him but Aaron holds her off, telling her he is focused on revenge and death for Bassianus and Lavinia. He gives Tamora a letter he forged to help incriminate Titus’s sons. Bassianus and Lavinia stumble upon the couple and threaten to tell Saturninus about their affair. Chiron and Demetrius arrive and kill Bassianus, throwing his body into a nearby pit. The brothers then carry Lavinia away to rape and murder her. Shortly afterward, Aaorn tricks Titus’s youngest sons, Martius and Quintus, luring them to the pit where Bassianus’s body has been thrown. They fall in and discover the corpse. Aaron then leads Saturninus to the pit, where he finds his brother’s body along with the buried gold and the forged letter. Titus begs for a fair trial but Saturninus ignores him and orders Martius and Quintus arrested and imprisoned for execution. Titus Andronicus - Episode 2 - Hunt Together28 sept. 202600:32:36
Lucius berates his father for killing his own son, and Titus’s brother Marcus implores him to allow them to bury Mutius in the family tomb. Titus grudgingly agrees to it and tells Marcus that he hopes to prosper by Tamora’s sudden advancement, since he was the one who brought her to Rome. Assuming that Titus orchestrated her escape with Bassianus, Saturninus publicly rejects Lavinia before leaving to marry Tamora. After the wedding, Saturninus and Bassianus strike an uneasy peace. Bassianus tells Saturninus that Titus had no part in Lavinia’s abduction. Tamora also vouches for Titus’s innocence, then pulls Saturninus aside and tells him he must pardon Titus or risk the anger of the Roman people. She promises her new husband that she will find a way to get revenge on Titus and his family. Saturninus finally absolves Marcus, Titus and his remaining sons. Tamora reassures Bassianus and Lavinia that they need not fear punishment as long as they behave. As they leave to enjoy the double wedding feast, Titus invites Saturninus to a celebratory hunt the following morning. Outside the palace, Aaron the Moor walks alone during the festivities, ruminating on his love affair with Tamora. He revels in her new status as Empress, looking forward to the power he will wield through her. He comes across Tamora’s sons, Demetrius and Chiron, who are fighting each other over who gets dibs on Lavinia. Aaron breaks it up and tells them Lavinia has just married Bassianus. When he sees that the brothers don’t care and are determined to take Lavinia for themselves regardless, he encourages them to lure Lavinia away from the hunting party the next day and rape her together.  CREDITS: The PLAY ON PODCAST SERIES, “TITUS ANDRONICUS”, was written by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE and translated into modern English verse by AMY FREED. Titus Andronicus - Episode 1 - Be Not Gauled21 sept. 202600:31:44
In the wake of the Emperor’s death, his two sons–Saturninus (the eldest) and Bassianus (the younger, more popular)--argue over who should rule Rome, as their armed supporters clash in the streets. The Tribune Marcus Andronicus (Titus’s brother) intervenes to stop the fight. He announces that the Roman people have chosen his brother, Titus Andronicus, to be the new Emperor because of his legendary military service. Titus enters in triumph with his four surviving sons, the bodies of his dead sons in coffins, and high-profile prisoners of war–including Tamora, Queen of the Goths, and her three sons. Titus refuses the crown due to his old age and instead endorses Saturninus, who becomes the new Emperor. Titus’s son, Lucius, demands that the eldest captive Goth prince, Alarbus, be sacrificed to appease the ghosts of Titus’s fallen sons. Tamora begs for her son’s life, but Titus insists on the brutal religious rite. Alarbus is dismembered and killed. Grieved and enraged, Tamora and her surviving sons swear revenge against Titus and his family. As a reward for his loyalty, Saturninus chooses to marry Titus’s daughter, Lavinia. However, Lavinia is already legally betrothed to Saturninus's rival brother, Bassianus. Saturninus abruptly changes course and decides to marry Tamora instead, making her the new Empress of Rome. With the help of Marcus and Titus’s sons, Bassianus escapes with Lavinia. Furious at what he views as family treason and disrespect toward the emperor, Titus kills his own son, Mutius, for letting Bassianus and Lavinia get away.  CREDITS: The PLAY ON PODCAST SERIES, “TITUS ANDRONICUS”, was written by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE and translated into modern English verse by AMY FREED. The King of Navarre gathers together with his best friends (Longaville, Dumaine and Berowne) in the library at Howard University where he gets them to agree that they will devote themselves entirely to their studies without dating or indulging in food, drink or sleep for three full years. Berowne protests and reminds the King that the Princess of France is going to arrive soon to plead a case on behalf of her ailing father. The King promises to handle the situation and Berowne agrees to stick with his vow despite his reservations. They decide they’ll amuse themselves during their downtime by laughing at the antics of Don Adriano de Armado, a visiting scholar from Spain who is hilariously full of himself. Almost as soon as the King’s proclamation is issued, Sir Anthony Dull delivers a letter from Armado accusing Costard, a groundskeeper at Howard, of having an affair with Jaquenetta, a young lady who lives nearby. Introducing...Death of an Artist31 août 202600:43:10
We’re bringing you a preview of the new season of Death of An Artist. In February 2024, celebrated children’s book author and illustrator Petra Mathers and her husband, photographer Michael Mathers, mailed letters to dozens of friends and family members to let them know they had died by suicide. Petra and Michael were by all accounts healthy, happy, and in love. Why did they choose to die together? And what did that decision do to the people left to mourn them? Journalists Leon Neyfakh and Alice Gregory set out to interview everyone who got one of Petra and Michael’s letters—as one married couple trying to understand another. Through intimate conversations with Petra and Michael’s friends and family about their own relationships to aging, grief, death, and the friends they thought they knew, Death of an Artist weaves together a portrait of a community grappling with the Mathers’ deaths and the final words they left behind. Done entirely in recordings, Death of an Artist is as much a love story as one about death. Listen to Death of An Artist wherever you get podcasts. And if you want to hear the full story right now, ad-free, you can binge the entire season with a Pushkin+ subscription—sign up on the Death of an Artist show page on Apple Podcasts or at pushkin.fm/plus. Diomedes arrives to take Cressida to the Greek camp as Paris, Aeneas and Deiphobus speed off to the battlefield. Meanwhile, Ajax rouses the Grecian nobles in his excitement for the single combat with Hector. They humor him until Cressida arrives. One by one, each of the commanders try to force Cressida to kiss them. She uses her wit and sarcasm to keep them at bay. Ulysses ridicules her as a loose woman until Aeneas arrives to inform them that because Ajax and Hector are cousins, their duel cannot be to the death. The two combatants go at each other but settle for a draw. Hector is invited into the Greek camp to feast. All is well until Achilles arrives and vows to kill Hector in battle the next day. Troilus pulls Ulysses aside and asks him to take him to Calchas’s tent so that he can visit Cressida. ***Complete our listener survey for a chance to win a $50 gift card! *** Just as Troilus and Cressida finally unite, her father Calchas, a traitor who betrayed Troy to join the Greeks, petitions the Greek generals to trade for her so he can have her with him again. Agamemnon orders Diomedes to supervise the exchange. Ulysses then convinces the Greek commanders to rile up Achilles by walking past his tent without acknowledging him. When Achilles asks Ulysses what’s going on, Ulysses tells him Ajax is the new hero because he took up Hector’s challenge, but that if Achilles would break off his secret relationship with a Trojan princess and get back to fighting, his could restore his reputation. Thersites rubs it in by reporting that Ajax is strutting around the Greek camp completely full of himself. Achilles tells Thersites he wants to see Hector at his tent after the fight. Back in Troy, Diomedes arrives at Aeneas’s home to finalize the prisoner exchange for Cressida. Aeneas rushes to Troilus’s house to break the news to him. He gets there just as Pandarus is teasing the couple in their love nest. When Aeneas finally delivers the royal decree demanding that Cressida be handed over immediately, Troilus is devastated, and Cressida swears she will not leave. Achilles and Patroclus come to Thersites’ rescue and defend him from Ajax even though Thersites insists on insulting all of them. Back in the Royal Palace of Troy, Priam and his sons Hector, Paris and Troilus dine in the Trojan Council Chamber and debate whether to surrender Helen to end the war. Hector argues she isn’t worth the bloodshed and that it’s the honorable thing to do. They are interrupted by their mad sister, Cassandra, who enters and prophesies that if they do not let Helen go, Troy will burn. Troilus and Cressida - Episode 1 - The Milling29 juin 202600:35:01
***Complete our listener survey for a chance to win a $50 gift card! *** The lovesick Trojan prince Troilus is so consumed by his infatuation with Cressida that he refuses to fight in the endless Trojan war with the Greeks, lamenting his woes to Cressida’s uncle, Pandarus, who serves as the go-between for the lovers. Aeneas arrives with news that Troilus’s brother, Paris, has been wounded by Menalaeus in battle, persuading Troilus to rejoin the fight. Inside the Trojan Citadel, Cressida gets the gossip from her friend Alexandra before Pandarus arrives to sing Troilus’s praises. Together, Pandarus and Cressida watch the Trojan warriors return from battle. Pandarus keeps heaping praise on Troilus as Cressida remains aloof, but once alone, she confesses she’s only playing “hard to get” in order to keep Troilus interested. Meanwhile, in the Greek encampment outside Troy, the Generals Agamemnon, Nestor and Ulysses lament that the war has dragged on for years without victory. Ulysses blames it on a breakdown of hierarchy and order brought on by Achilles’ mocking their leadership, whipping the Greeks into a frenzy of anger and frustration. Caius Lucius asks Cymbeline to ransom his servant, a British boy (who is, of course, the disguised Imogen). Cymbeline does not recognize her but orders her freed and offers to give her any privilege within his power to grant. She speaks with him in private, and Belarius and his sons marvel at seeing the adopted brother they thought was dead. Cymbeline returns and asks Iachimo to step forward. Imogen demands to know where he got the ring on his finger. Iachimo confesses how he used trickery to win the bet with Posthumus. Posthumus emerges from the crowd and attacks Iachimo. When Imogen tries to intervene, Posthumus hits her, thinking she’s a boy. Pisanio scolds Posthumus. Imogen, revealing her true identity, turns on Pisanio for trying to poison her. The old doctor Cornelius intervenes, explaining how the Queen tricked Pisanio into thinking the poison was a healing potion and that he (Cornelius) secretly changed the ingredients to make it non-lethal. Posthumus embraces his wife. As everyone begins to piece it all together, Guiderius (Polydore) confesses that he killed Cloten. When Cymbeline orders that Guiderius be put to death for killing the prince, Belarius reveals himself as the banished courtier and tells the king that Guiderius and Arviragus are the sons that were stolen from him long ago. Cymbeline, overcome with happiness, forgives Belarius and welcomes him back to court. Meanwhile, Iachimo offers his life to Posthumus as payment for his sins, but Posthumus graciously forgives him. Together, everyone works to interpret the prophecy that Jupiter left in the book Posthumus found beside him that morning. The joyful king frees the Roman prisoners and vows to resume the tribute payments. Everyone goes to give thanks to the gods and to celebrate a lasting peace. Go to http://quince.com/playonpod for free shipping on your order and 365-day returns.*** The Queen is stricken with a wasting fever as she frets over the absence of her son, Cloten. Cymbeline threatens Pisanio with torture in an attempt to find out where Imogen has fled. The Romans invade Britain, and Belarius can’t keep his sons from joining the fight. Posthumus returns to Britain with the Roman soldiers, believing Imogen is dead. Overcome with remorse, he takes off his Roman uniform and dresses as a British peasant for the battle. He disarms Iachimo, who begins to regret lying about Imogen. Belarius, Guderius and Arviragus save Cymbeline from capture, turning the tide of war against the Romans. Posthumus, despondent with remorse, changes back into his Roman uniform in order to be captured and put to death. He’s thrown into prison and falls asleep in his cell, where he’s visited by the spirits of his dead ancestors who gather around him pleading for Jupiter to take pity on him and restore his fortunes. Jupiter agrees to bring happiness to Posthumus, leaving a book near his sleeping body. Posthumus wakes and begins to read from the book, trying to interpret its riddle until the jailer takes him to be hanged. A messenger intervenes, summoning Posthumus. Cymbeline knights Belarius and his boys for their valor, not knowing their true identity. Word arrives that before dying, the Queen confessed she never loved Cymbline and that she planned to poison him so the crown would go to Cloten. The Roman prisoners, including Caius Lucius, Iachimo, Posthumus and Imogen (still disguised as Fidele), are all brought to stand before the King. Imogen faints when she sees her father. She apologizes and offers to pay for what she’s taken, introducing herself as “Fidele”. Guiderius and Arviragus (who go by the names Polydore and Cadwal) feel an immediate kinship with the stranger and take to calling Imogen their brother. Meanwhile, Cloten, dressed in Posthumus’s clothing, makes his way through the wilderness towards Milford Haven. Later, Belarius and his boys set out for another hunt. Imogen, feeling ill, stays behind and drinks the potion Pisanio gave her thinking it will make her feel better. Out on the hunt, Belarius and his sons see Cloten. Belarius and Arviragus run ahead to find out if he’s alone. When Guiderius comes forward, Cloten challenges him to a duel. Guiderius cuts off Cloten’s head and returns to his brother and father, who recognizes Cloten’s face and laments that they’re in big trouble. The boys disregard their father’s concern and go triumphantly to wake Fidele, only to find the disguised Imogen seemingly dead from the potion. Grief-stricken, Belarius and his sons sing a prayer as they lay Imogen in the woods next to Cloten’s headless body, covering them with flowers. Imogen awakens after they’ve departed and sees the headless corpse next to her, dressed in Posthumus’s clothes. Assuming it’s her husband, she realizes she drank a sleeping potion and thinks Pisanio slipped it to her in order to kill Posthumus. She collapses in grief and is later discovered by Caius Lucius and his men. Remembering her disguise, Imogen introduces herself as Fidele. Lucius is impressed and employs her as his page. ***This show is brought to you by Quince. Go to http://quince.com/playonpod for free shipping on your order and 365-day returns.*** In the wilderness, an old shepherd named Belarius wakes his two sons, Guiderius and Arviragus, telling them to get out of their cave and enjoy the wonders of nature. The boys complain about never being allowed to go to the city. Belarius tells them the city is nothing but treachery, recalling his days as a nobleman in Cymbeline’s court before he was banished for crimes he did not commit. It turns out the two boys are actually Cymbelines’ sons who Belarius kidnapped as babies in order to avenge his exile. Meanwhile, Imogen and Pisanio arrive in Milford Haven. Seeing no sign of her husband, Imogen gets upset. Finally, Pisanio shows her the letter from Posthumus ordering Imogen’s murder. Cursing her husband’s lack of trust in her, she begs Pisanio to follow Posthumus’s orders and kill her. Pisanio refuses, telling Imogen that they should fake her death instead to make Posthumus regret his actions. Imogen agrees, disguises herself as a boy and sets out to find Caius Lucius, who will soon be leaving for Rome from the port of Milford Haven. Pisanio sends her off with the potion the Queen gave him, believing it will soothe her if she becomes sick on the voyage. When Pisanio returns, Cloten confronts him, demanding to know the whereabouts of the Princess. The prince leaves the palace with Posthumus’s clothing, vowing to wear them when he rapes the Imogen. Meanwhile, Imogen gets lost in the wilderness, where she stumbles upon Belarius’s cave. ***This show is brought to you by Quince. As they play, Cymbeline and the Queen pass by and tell Cloten to keep persisting with Imogen. A messenger brings word that ambassadors from Rome have arrived. The royal couple goes to greet the Romans, telling Cloten to join them after he leaves Imogen’s chambers. Cloten knocks on Imogen’s door and tries to bribe one of her ladies-in-waiting before Imogen appears. Imogen turns Cloten away so harshly that he vows to get revenge on Posthumus. As he rails, Imogen realizes that the bracelet Posthumus gave her is missing. She orders Pisanio to have her servants search for it. Meanwhile, Iachimo returns to Italy and goes to Philario’s house, where Philario and Posthumus are discussing the prospects of war between Rome and Britain over the tribute that Cymbeline owes Caesar. Iachimo claims to have won the bet, saying he slept with Imogen and describing her bedroom in detail. He shows off the bracelet he took from her wrist, then adds the detail of the mole on Imogen’s breast. Enraged, Posthumus turns over the ring he wagered. Back in Britain, Cymbeline refuses to pay the tribute Caius Lucius demands for Rome. Lucius says that can only mean war between the nations. Meanwhile, Pisanio receives a letter from Posthumus accusing Imogen of infidelity and ordering him to murder her. In an aside, Cornelius tells us he’s substituted it with a sleeping potion that will temporarily simulate death. The Queen tries to convince Pisanio to help make Imogen fall in love with her son Cloten, but Pisanio says nothing. She drops the poison, but when Pisanio tries to give it back to her, she tells him it’s medicine and he should keep it to use whenever he’s sick. Later, Iachimo arrives at the palace to win his bet with Posthumus. He tells Imogen that her husband has taken a prostitute and she believes him, but when he suggests she can get back at Posthumus by sleeping with him, Imogen realizes the story is a trick to get her into bed. She calls for Pisanio but Iachimo backtracks, pretending he was only testing Imogen’s fidelity to her husband. Imogen believes his story and agrees to keep a trunk with valuable jewels in her room that night while Posthumus stays at the castle. Meanwhile, Cloten complains that no one will fight him because he’s the Queen’s son. The Lord showers him with praise and encouragement but mocks him behind his back. That night, Imogen falls asleep while reading in her bed. Iachimo emerges from the trunk and steals Posthumus’s bracelet from her wrist. Cymbeline - Episode 1 - The Game Is On23 févr. 202600:32:11
***This show is brought to you by Quince. Go to http://quince.com/playonpod for free shipping on your order and 365-day returns.*** A writer describes the backstory of “Cymbeline” to her companion: King Cymbeline became the protector of Posthumus, the orphaned son of a valiant soldier. Cymbeline also had two sons of his own, Guiderius and Arviragus, and a daughter named Imogen. His two sons were kidnapped when they were young and have never been found. Cymbeline’s wife died and he married a new queen, who had a son named Cloten. He wants Imogen to marry Cloten but she defies him by marrying Posthumus instead. The couple secretly exchange a ring and bracelet before Cymbeline banishes Posthumus in fury. Cloten tries to pick a fight with Posthumus but Posthumus avoids the conflict, choosing to go to his father’s old friend Philario in Rome, and leaving his servant, Pisanio, behind with Imogen. Cloten boasts of his bravery as his servant ridicules him under his breath. Once in Rome, Posthumus meets a nobleman named Iachimo and a Frenchman who recalls Posthumus describing Imogen as fairer than the fairest ladies in France. Iachimo scoffs at this and wagers with Posthumus that he can seduce Imogen, betting against the ring that Imogen gave her husband. Having found Claudio, she pushes him to talk to Don Pedro, who informs him to his great surprise that he’s won Hero for him and that Leonato has agreed to the match. As Hero and Claudio revel in their joy, Don Pedro asks Beatrice if she’d take him as a husband. She laughs before realizing he’s not joking, then tells him she’ll never marry. He tells his daughter, Hero, that a distinguished young soldier named Claudio is accompanying the prince. Leonato’s niece, Beatrice, asks about a soldier named Benedick, with whom she has some history. Don Pedro arrives and steps off his ship with his brother, Don John, whose past transgressions he’s recently forgiven. Benedick and Claudio step off the ship with Borachio, who has a quick aside with his old flame, Margaret, Beatrice’s trusted servant. Beatrice and Benedick sling a few quick insults at each other before Don Pedro tells his soldiers that Leonato has invited them to stay for a month at his villa. As they leave the port, Claudio confides in Benedick that he’s in love with Hero. Benedick tells Don Pedro, who encourages the match. In the limousine on the way to Leonato’s villa, Don Pedro offers to help Claudio woo Hero at the upcoming masquerade ball. A few minutes later, in the kitchen of the villa where a feast is being prepared, Leonato’s sister, Antonia, tells him that her dresser told her that her driver overheard Don Pedro telling Claudio that he loves Hero. That evening, Don John broods in a guest house as his friend, Conrade, tries to cheer him up.
