| Kirrily Dear and Mark Grima are Running Against Violence. | 10 Aug 2021 | 00:40:46 | |
Welcome to the Peak Endurance podcast! Episode 121 is an interview with Kirrily Dear from Run Against Violence, and Mark Grima, from Team One Zero Six’s.
For 19 days in 2017, solo ultra marathon runner, Kirrily Dear, ran 1300km from Broken Hill to Sydney to give a voice to the often silent victims of family violence. Family and domestic violence, whether physical or psychological, is increasingly being recognised as the social challenge of our time. Public conversation around the issue is building; however, we often overlook the children - those who hear and see the violence, or are directly targeted. Too often, these children don’t have the chance to tell their own story. In 2017Kirrily asked the nation to stop and listen to these young people. Many people who experience family violence bear their pain in silence. They fear the stigma and social isolation that may result from speaking out about their experiences. Conversations break that silence and educate the community. People who experience violence can feel stigmatised and alone. They don't reach out for help for fear of their safety and what people will say and think. Every one of us has the power to change that. By starting conversations, we rip down those social barriers. That makes it much easier for people to ask for help and to heal from their experiences.
Starting 30 August 2021, groups of up to 20 people can virtually walk or run 1300km from Broken Hill to Sydney. The route retraces the real-world 2017 StepsTogether Ultramarathon. More than 3000 people across the world have participated online in the Challenge. This year it is expected to be even bigger.

TIME magazine named Karnazes one of the '100 Most Influential People in the World.' An internationally acclaimed endurance athlete, he is the winner of an ESPN ESPY, a three-time winner of Competitor magazine's Endurance Sports Athlete of the Year award and the recipient of the President's Council on Sports Fitness & Nutrition Lifetime Achievement award. Dean has just put out his latest book ‘A Runner’s High. Older, Wiser, Slower, Stronger.’ The description of his book goes: “In A Runner's High, Karnazes chronicles his return to the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run in his mid-fifties after first completing the race decades ago. The Western States, infamous for its rugged terrain and extreme temperatures, becomes the most demanding competition of his life, a physical and emotional reckoning and a battle to stay true to one's purpose. Confronting his age, wearying body, career path and life choices, we see Karnazes as we never have before, raw and exposed. A Runner's High is both an endorphin-fuelled page-turner and a love letter to the sport from one of its most celebrated ambassadors.” I have just read this book and I have to agree with this! It is a great read, to be honest I found it hard to put down!! I hope you enjoy our chat about his book and Dean’s running life in general!

| Emma Parsons: Mountain to Melbourne: 170km run to raise funds for our sick kids! | 19 Feb 2024 | 00:29:38 | |
The problem….Eastern Health Hospital Paediatric Units (The Angliss, Maroondah Hospital, Box Hill Hospital) are not supported by many of the major fundraisers throughout the year. They are in desperate need of resources - everything from coloured pencils and Disney Plus memberships to help entertain kids pre-op, through to ultrasound machines to assist in finding veins and distraction equipment for procedures to reduce stress and fear. Hospital-grade sensory kits are needed to support our neurodivergent children and youth and none of this is currently funded. Over the last year this is how many children were cared for at our local hospitals: Box Hill 11,160 Angliss 10,414 Maroondah 10,221 PLUS 4000 outpatients and a new baby every 2 hours! THAT’S A LOT OF KIDS! The plan….Emma-Rose is passionate about supporting children and youth, and is going to run over 100miles (170kms) from the top of Lake Mountain to Federation Square, via the three Eastern Health Hospitals that have Pediatrics; The Angliss, Maroondah and Box Hill hospitals. When: 5pm, April 18th, 2024 Distance: 170kms Goal: Raise as much as possible to support these desperately needed resources! Can we get to $30,000? If we can - I will run it in a tutu! How can you help? Individuals, we are asking for 10c/km ($17) and Businesses to donate $1/km ($170) DONATE HERE! Mountain to Melbourne Emma on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/run_joy_melbourne/

| Maggie Guterl wins the inaugural Cocodona 250! | 31 May 2021 | 00:42:05 | |
Welcome to the Peak Endurance podcast! Episode 108 is another interview with the amazing Maggie Guterl! Just a few weeks ago Maggie won the inaugural Cocodona 250. Maggie was first female and 7thoverall in a time of 85 hours, 32 minutes and 27 seconds. The Cocodona 250 links together some of the most iconic trails and towns in Arizona for one monumental undertaking of 250 consecutive miles. The race starts in Black Canyon City at Rock Springs Cafe and traverses a continuous 250 mile point-to-point route, ending in Flagstaff, Arizona. Cover photo thanks to @howiesternphoto
In this episode we discuss how her nutrition and hydration plan went, how much sleep she had and her high and low points. At the start of the conversation we discuss the height of Flagstaff, which Maggie said was 7,400ft which I then said was just over 3000m. I meant to say just over 2000m but in my defence it was 4.45am for me and I had not long woken up!!

| Down Under 135 special: Tom Cullum, Nigel Hill and Tom Dade. | 25 May 2021 | 01:45:53 | |
Welcome to the podcast! Episode 107 is a Down Under 135 special! DU135 is renowned for being an extremely tough race; it has a high dropout rate, tough cut offs and long finish times. This year was no exception, with only two finishers! First was Nigel Hill in 52 hours and 36 minutes, followed by Tom Dade in 53 hours and 11 minutes. The race threw everything at them; steep ascents, slippery descents, off-trail sections and river crossings. The weather added another element, with driving rain and biting winds. In this special edition I chat with Tom Callum, one of the race organisers to find out about the genesis of the race and why they chose to make it so difficult. Then I speak with Nigel and Tom Dade to find out about their different race experiences. I really hope you enjoy this episode, even though it is a fair bit longer than my usual podcasts! Many thanks to the Eventurers for the use of their amazing photos!

Welcome to the podcast! Episode 103 is an interview with me about my latest big run. I am joined by guest hosts Ron Tait and Tracey Davies, both whom were members of my crew. This was a really tough run for me and a totally new experience; further than I have ever gone before, and an individual challenge rather thana race. In this episode we delve into what motivated me to undertake this epic challenge, how I kept going when I wasn’t feeling the best, and what it takes to crew someone over such a long time. Since recording the interview, the course has been accepted as an official FKT course, and I now officially hold the record for Solo female, supported. This is very exciting news for me, and makes all the work worthwhile! I hope you enjoy the podcast!
