David's Refuge: "We Care for the Caregivers"
Season 1 · Episode 15
mercredi 18 mars 2026 • Duration 16:53
Today we are talking with Daidra Hamlin from David’s Refuge. David’s Refuge has been helping families in the Syracuse area since 2011 but has recently branched out into Rochester.
David’s Refuge was started by Warren and Brenda Pfohl after their son, David, died of Batten’s Disease, a rare, progressive disease that took his life just shy of his 21st birthday.
Instead of turning inward with their grief, the Pfohl’s decided to take the strength they saw and received from their son and turn it outward to help other parents and guardians of children with special needs and life-threatening illnesses.
David’s Refuge was created as a place where caregivers can spend a complimentary weekend in the company of others who understand their unique struggles.
Daidra was asked to talk to us today because she can speak both as a caregiver and a recipient of the benefits of Respite Weekends. Daidra and her husband have 3 wonderful boys: a set of 16 year old twins and a 5 year old. One of the twins and their youngest son have a genetic diagnosis of Ponto Cerebellar Hypoplasia (PCH) which is a neurogenetic disorder. They are non-verbal and in wheelchairs. The other twin is neuro typical.
When parents find themselves in such a challenging environment, sometimes we forget to find time for ourselves. But if we don’t take care of ourselves, we are less prepared to care for those who need us.
The Respite Weekend is the heartbeat of David’s Refuge. You can spend time at a B & B or at a hotel to recharge and refill. You are given the tools to help cope the rest of the year.
Throughout the year, David’s Refuge also has a Wellness Initiative that has offerings both in-person and virtual that is an important part of caregivers’ overall health. It offers things like Virtual and in-person yoga and fitness classes; 1:1 nutrition counseling; Caregiver Support Groups and so much more!
To build Community, David’s Refuge offers events for the whole family, some events are just for the caregivers and the children with special needs and some events are just for caregivers – something for everyone!
To become a part of David’s Refuge there is an application process. You can find it at DavidsRefuge.Org or on David's Refuge Facebook Page.
David’s Refuge is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with strong financial health and is well regarded in the non-profit community. It works with organizations like Autism Up and The Golisano Center.
Be on the lookout for more details on ROC for Caregivers, Sept 24th at The Carlson.
“The mission of David’s Refuge is to provide respite, resource and support to parents and guardians of children with special needs or life threatening medical conditions where they will be refreshed, restored and renewed in their role as caregivers.”
If you’d like to donate to, volunteer at or contact David’s Refuge, you can do that at Davids Refuge.org.

Greater Rochester Enterprise: Marcia Sits Down with President & CEO Matt Hurlbutt
Season 1 · Episode 6
vendredi 6 décembre 2024 • Duration 28:51
Prepare for something completely different on this episode of "On the Go with The Glenn Advantage Team!" Marcia chats with GRE's Matt Hurlbutt for a non-stop half-hour of high energy discussion about a company that is dedicated to attracting and growing businesses in the Rochester Region. GRE has had a significant role in bringing companies like fairlife, Pfisterer, AMD, UltraPhil, Geis and Edwards to the area. Additionally, GRE has helped companies already here see the benefits of expanding rather than moving on - companies like HP Hood, IDEX Health & Science, O'Connel Electric, Oxbo, General Motors Rochester Operations in Gates and Toyota Material Handling North American in Henrietta.
When asked how GRE was able to meet the needs of its clients, Matt said that GRE is "built to respond". The "request for information" that used to be due in 2 weeks is now expected in 24 hours. But, because of the positive multidisciplinary relationships GRE has built up over its 20+ year history, it can draw upon the business, academic, government, and infrastructure communities to assess the feasibility of a new project. Because, like Matt says, "Rochester is a One Degree Separation Town".
Both Marcia and Matt are from the Rochester area and they agree that Rochesterians don't brag about themselves nearly enough. This episode is another reason why they should. Enjoy!

Discovering Penfield with Supervisor Jeff Leenhouts
Season 1 · Episode 2
lundi 20 mai 2024 • Duration 20:00
In today's episode Marcia welcomes Penfield Supervisor Jeff Leenhouts. Did you know that Penfield has been ranked the second best place to live for quality of life and one of the top 50 places to live in the US? It's really no wonder, since the area is rich with walking trails, athletic fields, museums, open air parks and beaches. The area is served by both the Penfield and Webster school districts and the children benefit greatly from the libraries and hands-on cultural opportunities that add to their learning and in-depth study. The job market is increasing, the average salary in Penfield is above the median state average and the overall cost of living is better than the US average. Crime rate is down and the housing market is very strong. There are multiple development projects that will enhance the Penfield area: Shadow Pines, originally a 212 acre golf course that was acquired by the town now has areas for hiking, orienteering, cross-country skiing, bird watching, and disc golf. Pickleball courts are being build. The Clark House is being rehabilitated and The Lodge is being added to it so the town can have another place for larger gatherings, parties, and weddings. There are mixed use properties being built at Routes 250 & 286 called The Arbors at Penfield, and Penfield Heights is being built across from the YMCA. The summer is a very busy social season for Penfield! On Monday May 27th is the Memorial Day Ceremony of Remembrance, On June 2nd at Dayton's Corner school House is the Pie Social and Fundraiser, Saturday June 29th is the Town of Penfield Independence Day Celebration and all summer long there are concerts to go to. To get more details about all of these go to Penfield.org and look under Events and Performances Tab. Penfield.org is also a great place to contact Supervisor Leehouts should you have any questions for him.

Immigration Law: A Fact-Finding Mission with Richard Link From JustCause
Season 1 · Episode 14
jeudi 12 février 2026 • Duration 37:57
In this episode we look at Immigration. Our goal was to inform our followers about the law and provide helpful information for those seeking guidance.
Richard Link is a staff attorney with JustCause who specializes in Immigration Law. JustCause is an organization of attorneys that serves the low income population pro bono. They handle immigration cases, family law, wills & trusts, and housing/tenant issues. JustCauseNY.org
On Jan. 30, 2026 Gov. Hochul introduced the "Local Cops, Local Crimes Act" to stop ICE from co-opting local law enforcement. Local & state police will continue to work with Federal law enforcement in criminal investigations.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office does not ask about immigration status when people report crimes or seek assistance, so that both victims and witnesses can feel safe when they interact with law enforcement.
Different kinds of status:
- US Citizen: you cannot be deported, you have full rights & responsibilities
- Permanent Resident (aka Green Card holders): grants permanent residency, it is a pathway to citizenship after 3-5 years, you cannot vote & you can be deported if you commit certain crimes.
- Refugee/Asylee: the person has a well-founded fear of persecution on the basis of race, religion, nationality, member of social or political group if returned to the home country, and the person is not a safety risk to the US.
- Visa: Allows temporary entry for a specific purpose and is valid for a limited period of time. Does not to lead to citizenship.
Immigration is complicated. People don't understand what ICE/CBP can/cannot do.
- If you're walking down the street and you "think" you may be stopped and asked about your status, have your papers on you at all times. DO NOT have a picture of it on your phone! Then ICE could take your phone.
- If you are at a protest, intentionally - or if you happen to come across an incident by accident, you have the right to film it. BUT DO NOT interfere with the authorities! Don't "offer proof" that you have filmed the incident - that's like offering them your phone, which they can take.
- NEVER ask someone their status. Ignorance is bliss if you are asked about someone else.
- If ICE comes to your home, UNLESS they have a JUDICIAL WARRANT SIGNED BY A JUDGE you do not need to open any doors no matter what they say. Make them slide the paper under the door or put it against a window. You are protected by the 4th Amendment.
- IF you get detained get a lawyer, you have a far better chance of success!
- To help immigrants, work with local churches & organizations who already have systems in place.
Today we have primarily focused on Immigration law because of its relevancy, but please remember that JustCause does pro bono work for low income families in regard to family law, wills & trusts, and tenant issues.

"We are Public Servants not Politicians" Meet Webster Town Supervisor Alex Scialdone
Season 1 · Episode 13
vendredi 23 janvier 2026 • Duration 20:07
He is very transparent and wants to encourage the rest of his team to be that way as well.
- The small margin of victory meant that every “little” thing he did – every hand he shook, door he knocked on, event he attended had a significant impact.
- The common theme he heard when out in the community was Communication. There is a great deal of fear of overdevelopment. Webster residents don’t understand why things are being done the way they are
- People receive their information from different websites, news channels, platforms, social media sites and his people have to do better to make sure they are in front of the public. They are public servants, not politicians.
Fairlife Update: They are continuing to work apace to be compliant with Webster Town code, weekly meetings with the town and everyone seems pleased with the progress.
McAlpin Manufacturing Facility on Hard Road near Rt. 104: Further traffic study has been requested but congestion fears have been allayed: 1) the shifts stop and start during off-peak hours; 2) they will only be receiving 3-4 deliveries per day. An unintentional acre of land was clear cut, but 54 additional trees will be planted to help regrow that area.
Property Re-evaluation: The re-evaluation provides an equitable re-distribution of property taxes. The tax levy has not gone up significantly and we are still within the standard rate of increase most, but not all, homes will not see any change in their level of taxes.
Alex Scialdone also spends his time volunteering at several non-profit organizations in Webster.
Webster Comfort Care Home – provides hospice at no cost to the family to live out the last 3 months of life in comfort and dignity. Runs entirely on donations by volunteers.
