Ep. 12 - Marketing Funnels For Small Business - Do I Need One?19 Mar 202400:23:49

Welcome back to another episode of the Marketing and the Margins podcast, where we talk about marketing your business, while also running your business and living your life.

This week: Marketing Funnels; What Are They? Do I Need One?

One of the topics/questions that comes up consistently for me in the "I have no idea" category are marketing funnels.

And I get it, there's A LOT out there to wade through and honestly, the funnel has been really overcomplicated!

This episode is actually a Live I did on Instagram as part of the launch for my new workbook - How To Build A Funnel For Your Small Business - and I answered questions, riffed on a few things and gave some insight into creating a funnel that is right for you.

Key Points Discussed:
  • What is a marketing funnel?: It's a much simpler idea than we've been led to believe. Not always "easy" to build, but simple to plan.
  • Do I need a marketing funnel?: The answer, annoyingly, is yes-ish.
  • Does your funnel have to have a freebie?: It doesn't HAVE to but it sure does help!
  • Other Tidbits:
    • Getting of TikTok & falling in love with Threads
    • Why "fundamentals are the building blocks of fun" is my mantra
    • Email sequences as a nurturing powerhouse

It's Women's History Month & we are celebrating amazing women entrepreneurs who blazed a badass trail for the generations that followed them!

On this episode of The Marketing In The Margins podcast, I'm sharing the story of 17 year old Eliza Lucas Pinckney.

Eliza took over her family's failing plantations in 1793 and within just a few years turned it all around.

In a time when women had quiet literally no rights, Eliza made not just a name for herself in business but also created a pretty impressive legacy!

Ep 10 - Small Business Marketing 101 - What Is Your Marketing Mix?05 Mar 202400:08:44

Welcome back to another episode of the Marketing and the Margins podcast, where we talk about the how-to of marketing your business while also running your business and living your life!

So you know you need to start doing some more strategic marketing for your business but you're not sure where to start... No problem! Start here!

In this episode I lay out how to create your marketing mix.

What is your Marketing Mix?

It's the basic marketing strategies and info you need to begin crafting messaging and creating content to promote your business and reach your dream audience.

The Marketing Mix breakdown...

Step 1 - Get to know your audience so so well. Know what their needs & desires are AND where they spend their time online. (This will help you plan where to create content and focus your efforts)

Step 2 - Based on the info you gather about your dream audience, what content do you need to focus on?

Is it content you already feel confident creating? Is it content and platforms that you need to spend some time learning?

Step 3 - Be ready to be flexible as your business evolves and your audience grows! Marketing is an art, not a science, so be in a learning & growth mindset always.

Use this is a solid jumping off point for planning and refining your marketing strategy!

Ep. 8 The Lonely Hearts Club of Entrepreneurship: You're Not Alone13 Feb 202400:12:30

Welcome back to another episode of the Marketing and the Margins podcast, where we talk about marketing your business, while also running your business and living your life.

Key Points Discussed:
  • Loneliness in Entrepreneurship: We explore feeling isolated when running a business, especially as solopreneurs. During our weekly accountability call, I share a personal anecdote about how the phrase "the Lonely Hearts Club" sparked a conversation about this issue with a fellow entrepreneur friend.
  • Passion for Business: Despite our love and passion for our businesses, solitude can sometimes feel overwhelming. I reflect on how this love for what we do can ironically lead us to a sense of loneliness, akin to being members of a "Lonely Hearts Club."
  • Entrepreneurial Bravado: There's a common misconception that entrepreneurs are always confident and self-assured adventurers. While this can be true, we are also humans who crave community and connection.
  • Finding Support: I stress the importance of seeking out networking groups and communities, such as FemCity, which I joined and found incredibly beneficial. These groups can act as a support system, providing camaraderie and advice.
  • The Weight of Responsibility: I discuss the heavy burden of being solely responsible for the success or failure of your business and how this can contribute to feelings of loneliness.
  • Lack of Immediate Support: Entrepreneurship can be particularly lonely for those without immediate support from family and friends. I emphasize the importance of finding a community that understands and supports your journey.
  • Burnout and Creativity Loss: I share my experience with burnout and how it was linked to my loneliness. Recognizing the need for support and community was crucial in overcoming this challenge.
Strategies to Combat Loneliness:
  • Professional Networking Groups: I encourage listeners to search for and join professional networking groups, both online and in-person, to find like-minded entrepreneurs.
  • Finding a Mentor: Having a mentor who is further along in their entrepreneurial journey can provide invaluable support and guidance.
  • Seeking Professional Help: If loneliness leads to burnout or other mental health concerns, I recommend speaking with a therapist or mental health professional.
Homework (for my star students!)

I invite listeners who have experienced loneliness in their entrepreneurial endeavors to contact me via Instagram, DM, or email. Sharing our experiences can help us realize that we are not alone.

Ep. 5 - Being A Seed in the Snow: How I Use January To Plan & Reflect23 Jan 202400:14:01

Welcome back to another episode of the Marketing and the Margins podcast!

This is where we get real about juggling the art of marketing your business while also living life! We are doing it all in the margins, babydolls, and we're keeping it real along the way!

In this episode, I dive into the concept of my "Seed in the Snow" month - something that's become a yearly tradition of mine. I use January as a time for recalibration and planning after the hectic holiday season.

Despite the cold, challenges and general chaos of the season, I emphasize the importance of using this time to reset personally and professionally.

I discuss how I've learned to embrace this period for stillness and preparation rather than rushing into new launches or projects.

🌱In this episode:

  • What is the "Seed in the Snow" mindset?
  • January (or any month, day, hour you choose) can be the perfect time for recalibration.
  • The importance of planning over immediate action.
  • Reflecting vs. rushing – finding the balance for better outcomes.
  • Why big business launches might need to wait.
  • Reestablishing routines and order in your life and home.
  • Prioritizing self-care and health in the new year.
  • How can the family get involved and benefit from this mindset?

I also touch on the importance of self-care, especially as I navigate my recent Lupus diagnosis, and how my family has adopted this mindset, benefiting from the calm and structure it brings.

I encourage listeners to consider adopting a "Seed in the Snow" mindset in their own lives, whether for a month, a weekend, or just an afternoon, to build a strong foundation for the year ahead.

4 Key Aspects of My “Seed in the Snow” Approach:

  1. Prioritizing planning over immediate action.
  2. Reflecting on ideas rather than hastily executing them.
  3. Avoiding big business launches in January.
  4. Reestablishing routines and order in both my personal life and business

Ep. 14 - The 3 Things I'd Do Differently If I Started My Business Today11 Apr 202400:14:03

Welcome back to The Marketing and the Margins podcast! This is where we talk about marketing your business, while also running your business and living your life.

On this week's episode, I'm sharing the 3 things I'd do differently if I started my business today -  knowing what I know as an entrepreneur with years under my belt.

Starting, running and growing a business can truly be lesson after lesson, and as part of the women entrepreneur community, I want to share some of those lessons.

The 3 things I would have done differently:

1. Work on mindset from the beginning. It matters!

2. Spend as much time learning about your audience as you do you creating offerings for them.

3. Build multiple streams of income as you build your business.

And I want to hear from you!

If you're a business owner with a few years experience, what would you do differently if you were starting over with all that knowledge?

Head over to Insta and tell me! It's so important that we talk about the hard parts of business just as much as we celebrate the wins!
