Meet Rachel Ivy Clarke! - Ep. 135

lundi 20 janvier 2025Duration 01:27:20

In this episode, we sit down with Rachel Ivy Clark, a textile artist and scholar who merges the worlds of quilting and data science. Rachel's quilting journey began at a young age when she didn't get into her first-choice class of making stained glass in third grade. What started as a creative outlet soon became a lifelong passion. Over the years, Rachel sewed everything from clothes to community quilts, sharing her art with friends and loved ones.

While earning her doctorate in Information Sciences, quilting took a backseat—until a unique opportunity reignited her love for textiles. When approached about using data in textile art, Rachel chose to represent a powerful social topic: gender representation in the US Senate. This decision marked the beginning of her ongoing exploration of how data can be visualized through quilting, transforming complex information into beautiful and accessible art.

In this conversation, Rachel discusses how she integrates data into her quilting practice, her thought process behind choosing specific datasets, and how she aims to bring iconic versions of data into the public eye. Tune in for an inspiring discussion on creativity, data, and the power of textile art to spark conversation and change. Meet Erin Nichole of Mija Handmade! - Ep. 125

Episode 128

lundi 4 novembre 2024Duration 55:30

Erin Nichole Whinnery is the designer and maker behind Mija Handmade. Erin grew up, as she says, under her mother's sewing table. In 2011, she made a quilt for her niece, then her sewing sat on the backburner. Then, like a lot of us, she wanted something creative to do during the 2020 lockdown. She picked up some fabric and zippers and started making striped zippered pouches. When the novelty of pouches wore off, she dove into sewing in other ways. Stockings, home decor, quilts, improv... and along came the Sharrow Quilt. The first design of many to come from Mija Handmade. As you'll see in her patterns, Erin loves to incorporate bold lines with interesting geometry and movement. This is also demonstrated in her current Block of the Month: Learning Curves 2024. Erin and Amanda chatted about the beauty and inspiration that comes from what we see, and in the technical side of writing patterns. Erin views it as its own art, and Amanda agrees. Erin Nichole just released her latest pattern, Grandma Core, and is available now! You can also purchase acrylic templates to help get crisp even curves. Go check out Erin's patterns while you listen!

Meet Anna Martinez - Barcelona Edition - Ep 32

Episode 33

lundi 11 juillet 2022Duration 24:49

Welcome to the Spain Edition of the Not Your Granny's Quilt Show Podcast! Abe and Amanda went to Barcelona for their anniversary (they've been married for 10 years!), and thought "hey, why don't we try to interview a quilter in Spain?!?" And here we are. We got in touch with Anna Martinez of Sew & Patch in Barcelona, Spain. She bravely welcomed us into her shop and agreed to speak with us at her store. She is a Bernina dealer and hosts sewing and patchwork classes in her shop. The walls are filled with threads of all colors, rotary cutters, rulers, needles... basically any sewing notion you could ever need! Amanda and Anna also spill the beans on their secret stashes of fabric. Oh well, at least Anna's secret will be safe since her husband doesn't know English. Amanda loved chatting with Anna, and she hopes you love her too! Gracias por vernos!
