045: The Journey Inward: Resilience and Mindful Living with Robert Cheeke14 Sep 202301:06:20

From a scrawny teenager to a professional bodybuilder and a dedicated advocate for veganism—Robert Cheeke's journey has been nothing short of remarkable.

Growing up on a small family farm, Robert had a deep connection with animals. The farm was home to cows, goats, chickens, and rabbits, and Robert actively participated in their care. However, as he became more aware of the ethics surrounding animal agriculture, he began questioning the practices they followed.

Robert's transformative journey towards veganism began at the age of 15, largely inspired by his older sister's commitment to animal rights. She organized an animal rights week at their high school, exposing Robert to powerful videos and literature that shed light on the immense suffering endured by animals in factory farming. It was a turning point in his life.

Transitioning to a vegan lifestyle wasn't without its challenges, especially within his family. Robert's father was an animal science professor, and his brother was actively involved in farming. Despite their differing dietary choices and ethical beliefs, Robert's family remained supportive. They even went the extra mile by accommodating his vegan diet with plant-based options from their garden. This aspect of Robert's journey taught him about the complexities of navigating family dynamics while adhering to a set of values that diverged from the norm.

Robert's commitment to veganism extended beyond ethical considerations; it encompassed a desire to prove that one could achieve exceptional physical feats on a plant-based diet. This passion led him down the path of vegan bodybuilding. He wanted to inspire others to embrace this lifestyle, reduce animal suffering, and showcase the incredible potential of plant-based living.

In the early days of his bodybuilding journey, Robert relied on plant-based protein supplements to support his training and muscle growth. He experimented with various sources of plant-based protein, including soy, rice, and pea protein, to meet his nutritional needs.

However, Robert's perspective on nutrition experienced a significant shift in 2012 when he enrolled in Dr. T. Colin Campbell's plant-based nutrition course at eCornell University. This eye-opening experience challenged his beliefs about sports nutrition and supplementation. It emphasized the significance of whole foods in achieving not just physical strength but also overall health and vitality.

The dedication and unwavering commitment to a whole food, plant-based diet paid off in Robert's bodybuilding career. He not only won competitions but also graced magazine covers and set strength records. One such record includes a bench press of 345 pounds, a testament to the remarkable strength achievable through plant-based nutrition.

Beyond his achievements in bodybuilding, Robert discovered a new passion for writing and teaching. Inspired by mentors and friends, he began sharing his knowledge through books, speaking engagements, and educational endeavors. His ability to inspire and motivate others has turned him into an international ambassador for the plant-based lifestyle.

Robert's legacy extends far beyond his personal accomplishments. His contributions to the vegan bodybuilding and fitness communities have helped countless individuals embrace plant-based living, achieve their fitness goals, and find like-minded communities. It's a testament to the transformative power of dedication, compassion, and a whole food, plant-based lifestyle.

His story serves as a reminder that anyone can lead a fulfilling life while making a positive difference in the world through their actions and choices. We invite you to join Robert on this journey to a compassionate, healthy, and sustainable lifestyle. Dr. Mills, a medical doctor with a unique perspective rooted in his religious beliefs, shared his journey and insights into the intersection of diet, health, and spirituality.

034: Cure vs Care...Aligning Diet with Healthy Living with Dr. Greg Fitzgerald29 Jun 202300:40:04

In a world where health and well-being are paramount, the Health Science podcast presents an illuminating episode featuring Dr. Frank Sabatino in conversation with Dr. Greg Fitzgerald.

This thought-provoking discussion takes a deep dive into the transformative power of natural hygiene and its profound impact on overall health and wellness.

Dr. Fitzgerald's journey towards natural health began when he noticed a concerning decline in the fitness and health levels of his high school students.

Motivated by a desire to make a difference, he immersed himself in the study of various health practices, leading him to redirect his career path towards natural health and wellness.

During his naturopathy studies, Dr. Fitzgerald had the extraordinary privilege of encountering a true luminary in the field, Dr. Alec Burton, a founding member and past president of the International Association of Hygienic Physicians, Inc., USA.

Under Dr. Burton's guidance, he gained invaluable knowledge and wisdom, which deepened his understanding of holistic well-being. This mentorship inspired Dr. Fitzgerald to pursue degrees in chiropractic and osteopathy, shaping his approach to healthcare and further fueling his passion for natural hygiene.

At the core of natural hygiene lies the belief that true health is achieved through healthful living. Dr. Fitzgerald explains that the human body is innately designed for optimal health, with sickness and disease arising from factors that disrupt this natural balance.

Natural hygiene encompasses the study of life, health, biology, and physiology, emphasizing the interconnectedness of these aspects and their profound influence on overall well-being.

What sets natural hygiene apart is its holistic perspective on health and wellness. Dr. Fitzgerald emphasizes that vibrant health and vitality are achieved through the harmonious integration of all elements of natural hygiene.

Rather than focusing on a single aspect in isolation, a balanced approach that incorporates appropriate nutrition, regular exercise, sufficient rest and sleep, and nourishing exposure to sunlight taps into the body's innate capacity for healing and rejuvenation.

One of the significant paradigm shifts that Dr. Fitzgerald challenges is the prevailing misconception surrounding cure and care.

In conventional medicine, symptoms are often viewed as adversaries to be eradicated, leading to a focus on symptom suppression. However, natural hygiene offers a refreshing perspective, considering symptoms as intelligent responses that signal the body's natural healing processes. It underscores the importance of caring for the individual, providing the necessary conditions and support for the body to restore its normal state of health.

Dr. Fitzgerald acknowledges that embracing natural hygiene and shifting paradigms can be challenging in a society entrenched in traditional medical approaches. However, he reminds us of the transformative power that lies within this holistic framework. By honoring the body's innate wisdom, providing the necessary conditions for healing, and embracing a holistic approach to health and wellness, individuals can embark on a journey toward vibrant health and well-being.

The conversation between Dr. Frank Sabatino and Dr. Greg Fitzgerald serves as a catalyst for reevaluating our understanding of health and the role we play in our own well-being. It invites us to tap into the timeless principles of natural hygiene and unlock our full potential for vibrant health. Her exposure to the internet led her to explore medical fasting and plant-based nutrition. As a result, Dr. Maisel visited True North Health in California and began reading works by renowned experts like Colin Campbell, John McDougall, and Dean Ornish.

During her younger years, Dr. Maisel lived in a community in Israel that was among the first to practice organic farming.

She also became interested in meditation and Tai Chi, which eventually led her to Japan for three years. Her experience there inspired her to return to conventional medicine, seeking an evidence-based approach.

In Israel, she has observed a strong focus on tertiary care and hospital medicine. While there is some emphasis on prevention, diet is often overlooked. However, she emphasizes that there is a growing interest in plant-based nutrition and lifestyle medicine.

Throughout her career, Dr. Maisel has been drawn to palliative and hospice medicine, working in various hospice departments in the UK.

In recent years, she has also focused on stress management, earning a qualification from the Benson Henry Institute at Harvard. The program, called Smart Stress Management and Resiliency Training (SMART), teaches individuals to recognize and manage stress.

Dr. Maisel believes that teaching stress management to doctors can help them better understand their patients and provide more effective care. She has taught several groups of doctors in the UK, offering continuing education credits for her course.

In her practice, Dr. Maisel takes a compassionate approach, offering extended consultations and making her services accessible to those with limited resources. As a semi-retired physician, she feels privileged to practice medicine in a way that aligns with her values and beliefs.

028: Super Easy, Budget Friendly Plant Based Eating with Kathy Davis18 May 202300:36:40

Kathy Davis, founder of VegInspired, is this week's featured expert on the Health Science podcast hosted by Dr. Frank Sabatino. Kathy shared her inspiring journey of transitioning to a whole food plant-based diet, traveling in a fifth wheel, and helping others adopt a plant-based lifestyle.

Kathy's journey to plant-based eating wasn't easy, as she initially thought it would be restrictive and boring. However, after transitioning for six months, she discovered that plant-based eating opened up a world of variety, flavor, and new foods that she had previously thought were off-limits.

Eating a whole food plant-based diet has helped Kathy achieve numerous health benefits, including weight loss, better sleep, improved mood, and even reversing the markers of pre-diabetes.

Her travels in a fifth wheel have also been an essential part of her journey.

Kathy and her husband sold their house and hit the road in a fifth wheel, with their cat in tow, almost five years ago. They've enjoyed visiting different places and grocery stores across the country while being able to maintain their whole food plant-based lifestyle on the road.

Kathy's work at VegInspired is centered around helping others adopt a plant-based lifestyle, with a focus on mindset and individualized meal planning.

She believes that mindset is crucial for making a successful transition and helps people change their self-image and see themselves as a plant-based eater.

Kathy provides high-touch coaching through her Eat More Plants Academy. She also offers a Meal Plan Accountability Club, helping people create meal plans that are aligned with their goals and the foods they want to eat.

During the podcast, Kathy shared her philosophy of "Eat More Plants" and "Intention over Perfection," which are characteristics of her programs.

027: Getting to the Heart of the Matter with Heart Health with Dr. Columbus Batiste11 May 202300:47:02

In this episode of the Health Science podcast, Dr. Frank Sabatino talks with a true champion of heart health, Dr. Columbus Batiste.

Dr. Batiste's passion for promoting heart health is deeply personal, stemming from the heart-wrenching loss of both his father and father-in-law due to lifestyle-related diseases.

Dr. Batiste's father had many healthy practices, but he was also known to disregard the dangers of excess, which led to severe diabetes and peripheral neuropathy. This caused his health to spiral downward until he could no longer walk and ultimately died a painful death.

Witnessing his father's suffering and the same fate that befell his father-in-law due to high blood pressure and kidney failure has only strengthened Dr. Batiste's resolve to help others live heart-healthy lives.

Dr. Batiste is committed to educating his patients and anyone who will listen about the importance of lifestyle changes in reversing and preventing diseases.

He believes that medicine is too focused on disease management and not enough on the root causes of those diseases. As a physician, Dr. Batiste sees his role as a guide, planting seeds of information for his patients and leading with love instead of criticism.

One of the exciting aspects of Dr. Batiste's work is in community outreach, particularly in under-resourced areas. The outreach often takes place in barbershops, hair salons, and churches.

Dr. Batiste believes that healthcare needs to transition to a model where care is brought to people where they are, rather than expecting people to come to clinics during traditional business hours. He emphasizes that every person is unique, and their approach to treatment should be individualized.

Through his experiences, Dr. Batiste offers a fresh perspective on healthcare. He encourages patients to take control of their health through lifestyle changes and advocates for personalized care that meets people where they are.

His work in under-resourced communities and his upcoming book highlight the importance of holistic health practices that prioritize the well-being of the whole person.

Dr. Schumacher is heavily involved in local initiatives, such as meetups and restaurant campaigns, to spread awareness about plant-based eating in her community.

Susan Hargreaves has been deeply passionate about animals since childhood. Her journey as an activist began when she visited a chicken hatchery with her aunt, only to witness the cruel separation of male chicks who were to be gassed and suffocated and females who were to be raised in cramped quarters to end up as a meal. This experience changed her life forever.

She has been actively involved in direct actions against circuses and rodeos, where she had been arrested and banned from the Toronto Sky Dome for life.

Susan explains the cruelty behind rodeos, including the use of electric prods and flank straps, and shares how she and her team successfully shut down a rodeo in Canada.

Inspired by her passion for animal welfare, Susan founded Animal Hero Kids, a nonprofit organization that promotes kindness to all species and recognizes bravery and compassion in youth.

She has educated elementary, middle, and high school students about animal welfare and the changing attitudes towards vegetarianism and veganism in schools.

When visiting schools, Susan emphasizes the message of kindness to all species and engages kids with her costume characters, such as Ronnie the Cow.

Her work with Animal Hero Kids has led to an annual award ceremony and a youth summit aimed at spreading the message of kindness to animals to a mainstream audience. She also collaborates with horse and cat rescue organizations and has authored several books including Animal Heroes, which recognizes female animal heroes.

Susan also shares her experience hosting the Los Angeles Animal Hero Awards, where they recognized the superintendent of the LAUSD school district for creating Meatless Mondays.

Maya Acosta and Dr. Riz Bukhari share a passion for plant-based nutrition and lifestyle medicine. Their journey began with their personal experiences with food and health, which eventually led them to create Plant-Based DFW, an organization that aims to spread awareness about plant-based nutrition and the plethora of health benefits for those who eat this way.

Maya's interest in healthy eating began during a nutrition course in college, which opened her eyes to the impact of certain products on the body.

Dealing with her own struggles with food, Maya transitioned to a mostly pescatarian diet, but her relationship with food was off kilter.

She was afraid of gaining weight and had health problems for years, including adrenal fatigue and weight gain.

Doctors couldn't determine the cause of her health issues until a biological dentist discovered high levels of mercury in her body. This revelation made Maya realize the impact of her seafood-heavy diet and led her to transition to a plant-based diet. With the help of her husband, she was able to heal her body and overcome her health issues.

Dr. Riz, a vascular specialist, has seen the impact of lifestyle changes on his patients' health outcomes.

He emphasizes the importance of teaching patients to live healthier lifestyles to reduce the risks and complications of surgeries and interventions. However, he acknowledges the challenges of patient compliance with lifestyle changes and the influence of cultural, social, and psychological factors on their choices.

Maya and Dr. Riz also discuss the importance of incorporating whole food, plant-based nutrition into medical education. They hope that younger generations of physicians will have a better understanding of nutrition and its impact on health and are encouraged by the interest they've seen from medical students and young doctors in training.

Their passion extends beyond work into their community. They love promoting the benefits of a plant-based diet and hosting events to build a sense of community among like-minded individuals. Maya also hosts the Healthy Lifestyle Solution podcast where she highlights individuals who support healthy lifestyle choices.

Overall, Maya Acosta and Dr. Riz Bukhari's dedication to promoting plant-based nutrition and lifestyle medicine is making a significant impact in their community as well as globally due to their online presence.

Day by day they are achieving their goal to educate and raise awareness to help improve the health of individuals and society as a whole.

022: Farm Sanctuary is Compassion in Action with Gene Baur06 Apr 202300:46:38

Is there no end in sight to the abuse animals go through? If it's up to Gene Baur there will be more accountability from people and less suffering for the animals.

Gene Baur is a prominent figure in the animal rights movement and the co-founder of Farm Sanctuary, a non-profit organization that aims to end animal cruelty and promote veganism.

Baur's passion for animal welfare began in the 1980s when he started visiting farms to observe the conditions in which animals were being raised.

Horrified by what he saw, he knew that he had to do something to raise awareness about the cruelty and suffering that farm animals face.

Baur's first step to raising awareness and money was selling vegan hot dogs outside Grateful Dead concerts in the 80's. This gave him a platform to talk to people about animal welfare and veganism.

In 1986, Baur co-founded Farm Sanctuary with the aim of rescuing farm animals and providing them with a safe and loving home. The first sanctuary was in a small barn in upstate New York and was home to just a few animals. However, as the organization grew, so did the number of animals they rescued.

Today, Farm Sanctuary has three locations in New York and California and is home to over 1,000 animals. The organization also advocates for animal welfare and promotes veganism through various campaigns and events.

Baur is known for his tireless activism and dedication to animal welfare. He has appeared on numerous TV shows and has authored several books on the subject. His work has also been recognized by several organizations, including the Huffington Post, which named him one of the top 20 activists changing the world.

Gene Baur is a passionate animal rights activist who has dedicated his life to ending animal cruelty and promoting veganism.

Through his work with Farm Sanctuary, he has rescued and provided a home for thousands of animals and has raised awareness about the importance of treating animals with compassion and respect. His legacy will continue to inspire and influence animal welfare advocates for years to come.

During this episode of the Health Science Podcast, Dr. Frank Sabatino and Gene dig deep into why the work to raise awareness about animal cruelty is so important.

021: Keeping Your Body Clean with 100% Plant-Based Foods with Geoff Palmer30 Mar 202300:54:19

To look at Geoff Palmer today, there is no obvious trace of a troubled background. Yet, at one point, Geoff lived in a private prison of a dark depression with no apparent way out.

Just three days before his 18th birthday, Geoff Palmer's father, whom he had a very close relationship with, passed on.

This was the start of descending into an emotional bottom. Soon after, Geoff's mother and brother passed away taking him deeper into what he describes as a dark hole.

Finding solace in drugs and alcohol, Goeff thought of taking his life almost daily. He felt as if he was merely existing with no clear purpose or direction.

A chance meeting with a man who became a mentor to Geoff, turned his life around. As if a light switch were turned on, Geoff's addictions disappeared, and his zest for life transformed from the dark hole of depression to one where he gained clarity on his life's purpose.

His transformation included going from a meat eater to one of having no desire to consume animals in any form.

"I realized I could never hurt animals again and became 100% plant-based instantly," Geoff states. "I also saw a connection to depression and putting dead energy into my body."

Embracing a new way of life, Geoff knew his existence was about service.

During this episode of the Health Science Podcast, Dr. Sabatino unpacks Geoff's journey from feeling lost and alone to being one of the most recognized influencers in the plant-based world, especially for those who have a passion for bodybuilding and fitness.

As the founder of a 100% plant-based company, Geoff pulls back the covers on what his life was like before becoming a voice for the plant-exclusive lifestyle and after.

018: The World Peace Diet Continues with Dr. Will Tuttle09 Mar 202300:45:14

"Veganism is not just about personal health or animal welfare, it is about social justice and creating a more conscious society," according to Dr. Will Tuttle, best-selling author of The World Peace Diet; Eating for Spiritual Health and Social Harmony.

Dr. Tuttle shares his spiritual exploration journey with Dr. Frank Sabatino, ranging from his interest in philosophy to veganism and religious traditions. As Dr. Tuttle discusses his experience living in a monastery as a Zen Monk in Korea and how this influenced his connection with nature, meditation, and inner silence.

Dr. Tuttle talks about the criticisms he encountered in the vegan community but also how he was inspired by more than 900 vegans during his time. He highlights the importance of understanding the consequences of animal agriculture and how it is affecting our culture and the world we live in.

In the book The World Peace Diet, Dr. Tuttle argues that our culture's food system is based on violence, domination, and exploitation of animals, which has far-reaching consequences for human health, the environment, and social justice.

Further, he suggests that our food choices reflect and shape our values, attitudes, and beliefs and that we need to shift toward a more compassionate and conscious way of eating.

The World Peace Diet explores the connections between food, culture, spirituality, and social change, drawing on insights from philosophy, psychology, ecology, and other disciplines. It offers a vision of a more harmonious and integrated world, where people live in harmony with each other and with nature, and where all beings are respected and valued and to keep in mind that "We need to be aware of the consequences of our actions and how they affect others, whether they are animals, other humans, or the planet."

During this engaging conversation, Dr. Tuttle helps us understand the interconnectedness of our society, food, and the source of our problems.

In addition, they dig deep into the importance of awareness and compassion toward all sentient beings, the impact of veganism on personal and societal transformation, and the role of spirituality in our relationship with food and the world around us and of which what each of us can do, today and every day, to effectively contribute to world peace. Dr. Tuttle recommends people  "See life as an adventure. Wake up in the morning every day and give thanks for another opportunity to be part of the solution. Let life shine and as we do that we pray for a better world for all of us."

She'll be the first to say it had nothing to do with health or compassion to animals. It was purely for the love of her mother and their food budget, Meryl made her initial move to a plant-based diet.

Little did Meryl realize that her choice to go plant-based would lead her down a path that not only turned into her passion for health, but also her life's work.

In this episode, Dr. Frank Sabatino digs deep with Meryl Fury about how her passion has grown from simply saving money on food to being a voice for the health of plant-based eating and how to turn one's health around.

009: Art and Plant-Based Food…An Unbeatable Combination with Brittany Jaroudi05 Jan 202300:32:03

It's one thing to go plant-based, and something very different to completely transform your life with one life-changing decision.

Such is the case with Brittany Jaroudi. Growing up, Brittany lived with the constant fear that her parents would die. She saw her mom go through cancer on three separate occasions as well as her father having a massive heart attack at a young age.

During all this, Brittany had her own health struggles. Dealing with weight issues from childhood, at five feet tall, she hit 185 lbs. Her BMI was in the obese range.

Diagnosed with high blood pressure, Brittany was given the standard American solution… drugs.

Determined to take control of her well-being, Brittany researched ways to reduce her health risks.

A turning point for Brittany was when she watched the documentary Forks Over Knives. Getting a glimpse of her future, she made a vow to do what she could to turn her health around.

After watching the documentary, she immediately went plant-based, getting rid of all dairy, meat and processed foods.

Since that day, she has lost 60 pounds; she no longer has high cholesterol, nor does she take the medications she was told she would likely need for life.

Brittany believes it's never too late, or too early, to become healthy with plant foods.

During this episode of the NHA Health Science Podcast, Dr. Frank Sabatino digs deep with Brittany about what it took for her to turn her life around.

Long before plant-based eating was "cool" there were a handful of doctors who knew health, or lack thereof, was a direct result of what people eat.

As an early adopter of a whole food, plant-based diet, Dr. Klaper didn't shy away from letting his patients know that a plant-based diet and a balanced lifestyle are essential for health and can be the difference between healing an illness or treating its symptoms.

NHA is honored to have had Dr. Klaper as a presenter at the annual conference as far back as 25 years ago. The longstanding relationship is one we value and cherish.

In this episode of the Health Science Podcast, host, Dr. Frank Sabatino explores the health benefits of a plant-based diet as well as the impact of animal-based foods on the environment with Dr. Klaper and Moving Medicine Forward.
