Beyond the Physical: Healing, Intuition and Our Connection with Animals, with Dr Niikee Schoendorfer17 oct. 202601:13:04

What if healing involves more than addressing our physical symptoms? And what if our relationships with our animals have something to teach us about our own health, emotional wellbeing and personal growth?

In this episode of Mystic Dog Mama, I’m joined by Dr Niikee Schoendorfer, whose journey from naturopathic medicine, nutritional biochemistry and scientific research has led her into the world of energy medicine and intuitive healing.

We explore what it means to look beyond the physical body and consider the bigger picture of health - including the emotions, beliefs and patterns that shape our experience. Dr Niikee shares her perspective on the relationship between emotional and physical wellbeing, the effects of stress, and how we can begin to reconnect with ourselves when life leaves us feeling disconnected or out of balance.

We also get practical, exploring how breathwork can help us become more present and reconnect with our inner wisdom. From intuition and trusting what we sense to the role of energy in our experience of the world, this conversation invites us to become curious about dimensions of healing that may sit beyond our usual ways of understanding health.

And, of course, we bring it back to our animals. Could our dogs be catalysts for our own healing and growth? What might our relationships with them reveal about ourselves, and how might the work we do within ourselves change the way we show up for them?

We also venture into a bigger conversation about consciousness, energy and the idea of a New Earth — and what it might mean to live with greater awareness, connection and trust in our own intuitive knowing.

This is an invitation to look at healing from a different perspective: not simply as a battle against what is wrong, but as a process of coming back into balance, reconnecting with ourselves and deepening the relationships that make life meaningful.

If you’ve ever felt that your own wellbeing and your relationship with your dog are more deeply connected than we might ordinarily acknowledge, this conversation is an invitation to explore that connection with curiosity.

Because nourishing our dogs - and ourselves - mind, body and soul begins with being open to what we might discover.

What If We're Looking at Your Dog's Health All Wrong? Cybernetics, Systems and Whole-Body Health with Dr Tom Lonsdale03 oct. 202601:40:07

What if we stopped looking at our dogs as a collection of parts — and started looking at them as living systems?

What if the symptom we're looking at isn't the whole story?

What if health isn't simply about identifying the broken part and fixing it, but about understanding the complex web of communication, feedback, environment and relationship happening within the whole organism?

In this episode of the Mystic Dog Mama podcast, I’m joined by Dr. Tom Lonsdale for our third conversation together, and we dive into one of his favourite — and most challenging — subjects: cybernetics.

Cybernetics offers a way of looking at living systems not as collections of isolated components, but as dynamic, interconnected wholes.

And that gives us a very different way of thinking about health.

We talk about the relationship between the oral health and the rest of the body, chronic inflammation, diet, evolutionary biology and why Tom believes dogs and cats can offer us important insights into how biological systems work.

But this conversation isn't really just about teeth.

It becomes a much bigger conversation about how we think.

And about what can happen when we start to question the assumptions underneath the systems we've inherited.

We also explore what cybernetics might teach us about our relationship with nature.

What happens when we stop seeing “humans” and “nature” as separate?

What happens when we consider the ripple effects of our choices — from the food we feed our dogs to the chemicals we use, the food systems we depend upon, and the wider ecosystems of which we're part?

In this episode, we explore:

  • What is cybernetics? — and how communication, control and feedback help us understand living systems
  • Periodontal disease in dogs and cats — why Tom believes the mouth can offer us a window into much bigger biological processes
  • Evolution and the carnivore — what looking at dogs and cats through an evolutionary lens might tell us about their biology
  • Our relationship with nature — and what changes when we stop thinking of ourselves as separate from the ecosystems we inhabit
  • Challenging the status quo — what happens when new ways of thinking collide with established systems and professional orthodoxies
  • The power of the individual dog guardian — and why Tom and I believe there is significance in the choices we make for the animals in our care

Perhaps the biggest question I took away from this conversation is this:

What becomes possible when we stop asking only, “What is wrong with this part?” and start asking, “What is happening within the whole system?”

Because our dogs aren't collections of symptoms. They're living, responsive, interconnected beings — embedded within families, communities and ecosystems. And perhaps learning to see those connections is one of the most important forms of nourishment we can offer.

Field Note: Mabon and Redefining Balance23 sept. 202600:09:05

Field Notes from Mystic Dog Mama

Field Notes are my short musings from walks with Lucky - the things I find myself noticing, wondering about, and turning over as we move through the seasons together.

For this first Field Note, I'm thinking about balance as we arrive at Mabon and the Autumn Equinox.

What if balance isn't fixed? What if it doesn't mean everything being equal, or getting everything right all the time, but instead means paying attention to what this particular moment, and this particular season, is asking of us?

A reflection on our dogs, our own lives, our search for certainty, and the wisdom that can come from coming back to the present moment and asking:

What does balance look like for me, right now?

And a little invitation to notice the season in the small things - a change in the air, an autumn leaf, cinnamon in your coffee, or what your dog stops to investigate on your walk.

Keep exploring

Continue the season with the Seasonal Nourishment Journal. The Mystic Dog Mama Seasonal Nourishment Journal is a field guide to living a more nourished life with your dog - with space to notice the seasons, reflect on what you need, and make room for the small rituals and moments that often pass us by.

Revisited: Samhain, Story and the Spiritual Dog. Reconnecting with the Magic of Irish Mythology with Jen Murphy19 sept. 202601:10:34

What if the old stories still have something to teach us?

As we move towards Mabon — the Autumn Equinox and a turning point on the Celtic Wheel of the Year — I’ve been thinking about what it means to live more in tune with the seasons, rather than simply following the dates on a calendar.

So it felt fitting to end this summer’s Revisited series with my conversation with Irish mythologist Jen Murphy.

We talk about dogs in Irish mythology, the role of the hound as guide and companion, animism, the wisdom held within the seasons, and the Irish concept of dán — our soul’s gift or creative destiny.

It’s a beautiful conversation about mythology, purpose, nature and the ways our dogs can call us back into deeper relationship with the world around us.

In this episode, we explore:

  • Dogs and the hound in Irish mythology
  • The Celtic Wheel of the Year and seasonal living
  • Animism and our relationship with nature
  • Mythology as a living practice
  • Dán — the idea of our soul’s gift or creative destiny
  • Following the breadcrumbs rather than needing to know exactly where they lead

As we cross this seasonal threshold, perhaps it’s a good moment to ask: what is ready to be harvested, what are you ready to let go of, and what is calling you towards what comes next?

Revisited: Dampness - The Hidden Pathogen You Need to Know About with Dr Neal Loh12 sept. 202601:08:22

Could “dampness” be part of what’s going on with your dog?

Maybe your dog has recurring yeast or ear problems. Maybe their digestion seems to be constantly up and down, or you’re dealing with symptoms that improve for a while only to come back again.

What if, instead of looking at each of these things as a separate problem, we started to look at the bigger picture?

In this Revisited episode of the Mystic Dog Mama podcast, I’m bringing back my conversation with Dr. Neal Loh, holistic and integrative veterinarian, because there is so much in this conversation that continues to shape the way I think about nourishment and whole-dog health.

Neil introduces us to the traditional Chinese medicine concept of dampness — a pattern that can sit beneath and contribute to a whole range of health imbalances.

We talk about what dampness is, how it can show up in our dogs, where stagnation fits into the picture, and why food and food energetics can be such an important part of supporting the individual dog.

But perhaps what I love most about this conversation is that it moves us away from the idea that there is one perfect food, one perfect diet, or one perfect solution.

Because in traditional Chinese medicine, context matters.

The individual dog matters. Their constitution matters. Their digestion, their environment, their emotional state and the foods they are eating all form part of a much bigger picture.

In this episode, we explore:

  • Dampness in traditional Chinese medicine — what it is, how it develops, and why it can be such a stubborn pattern
  • How dampness can show up in our dogs — including recurring yeast, ear problems, digestive upset and other patterns of imbalance
  • Stagnation and damp heat — and how these concepts can help us think differently about chronic or recurring symptoms
  • Food energetics and individual constitution — why the same food can have very different effects on different dogs
  • Why “balanced” doesn’t have to mean perfect — and how TCM can help us move away from the pressure to get everything right in every single bowl
  • Looking beyond the symptom — and beginning to see health as an interconnected picture rather than a collection of isolated problems

The question I really want you to take away from this conversation is:

What changes when we stop asking only “What symptom are we trying to fix?” and start asking “What is the whole dog telling us?”

So whether you’re completely new to Traditional Chinese Medicine or you’ve been exploring food energetics and constitutional approaches for years, I think there’s something here for you.

Revisited: A Deep Dive into Allergies, Intolerances, and Sensitivities with Dr Katie Woodley05 sept. 202601:04:55

Is your dog “allergic” to everything?

Maybe they can only eat one protein. Maybe you’ve been told to avoid chicken, beef, grains, dairy, or a whole list of other foods. Maybe you’ve tried food after food, supplement after supplement, and you’re still dealing with itchy skin, recurring ear problems, digestive upset or unexplained reactions.

But what if we’ve been too quick to call all of these things an allergy?

In this Revisited episode of the Mystic Dog Mama podcast, I’m bringing back my conversation with Dr. Katie Woodley, holistic veterinarian and founder of The Natural Pet Doctor, because this conversation feels particularly relevant right now.

Since announcing my upcoming cook-along, I’ve had several dog guardians get in touch to ask whether it’s suitable for their dogs because they have allergies, sensitivities or intolerances — and some dogs apparently have an ever-shrinking list of foods they’re “allowed” to eat.

And it got me thinking about how much fear and confusion can surround food when our dogs are struggling.

Because allergies, intolerances and sensitivities are not necessarily the same thing.

In this conversation, Katie helps us untangle some of that confusion and look beyond the ever-growing list of foods our dogs supposedly can't have.

In this episode, we explore:

  • Allergies vs intolerances vs sensitivities — what’s actually happening in the body, and why these terms are so often confused
  • Food and allergy testing — which types of testing can provide useful information, and why some tests may leave you with more questions (and fewer foods) than you started with
  • The gut–immune connection — and why gut health can be such an important piece of the puzzle when we’re seeing skin and digestive symptoms
  • Why it isn’t always about the food — and what digestion, absorption, the microbiome, stress and the nervous system might have to do with the picture

The question I really want you to take away: instead of only asking “What food is causing this?”, what happens when we start asking “Why is my dog reacting in the first place?”

So if you’ve been stuck in the cycle of food elimination, testing, changing diets and wondering what on earth your dog can actually eat anymore, this conversation is for you.

And if you’re wondering whether my upcoming cook-along might be appropriate for your dog, I’d definitely give this episode a listen first.

Come with your curiosity switched on.

And let's look beyond the label.

Revisited: Redefining Reactivity, Recognizing Trauma in Your Dog with Dr Laura Donaldson29 août 202601:21:23

What if “reactivity” isn't the whole story?

What if the behaviour we find difficult in our dogs is actually communication - an expression of fear, overwhelm, a nervous system on high alert, or a dog who simply doesn't feel safe?

In this Revisited episode of Mystic Dog Mama, I return to my very first conversation with Dr Laura Donaldson, a conversation that had a profound impact on how I understood Lucky and the way I approached our relationship.

I first discovered Laura's work when I was desperately looking for help with Lucky's reactivity. At the time, I was experiencing so much of what can come with living alongside a dog who finds the world difficult: overwhelm, fear, isolation, grief, and the constant worry that somehow you're letting your dog down.

Laura introduced me to a different way of seeing things.

Rather than asking “How do I stop this behaviour?”, she encouraged me to become curious about what was happening underneath it - and to ask:

“What do I need to learn from you to help you feel safe in this context?”

That question has stayed with me. And over time, it became part of a much bigger shift in how I related to Lucky. Learning to listen differently, understanding regulation, paying attention to my own nervous system, supporting his gut health, and bringing together the physical, emotional and relational pieces of his wellbeing have all played a part.

Today, Lucky is a dog who genuinely enjoys being in the world, and I enjoy being in it with him.

That's why I wanted to revisit this conversation.

In this episode, we explore:

  • Why the language of “reactivity” can sometimes limit how we understand our dogs
  • What might be happening underneath behaviours such as reactivity and aggression
  • Understanding trauma and its potential impact on our dogs
  • The importance of safety and emotional resilience
  • How our own nervous systems and experiences can become part of the picture
  • Asking better questions of our dogs rather than simply trying to stop unwanted behaviours
  • How we can become stronger advocates for our dogs
  • Supporting dogs who carry emotional charge in their bodies
  • Laura's approach to grounding and regulation
  • EFT and energy work as possible tools for supporting emotional wellbeing
  • The relationship between compassion for our dogs and compassion for ourselves

Revisited: The One Key Ingredient for Your Dog's Health with Dr Tom Lonsdale22 août 202601:17:29

What if understanding what dogs need begins with a much simpler question:

What is a dog?

In this revisited episode from the Mystic Dog Mama archives, I return to my very first conversation with veterinary surgeon and author Dr. Tom Lonsdale - a conversation that laid the groundwork for so much of my own thinking about canine nourishment.

Tom has spent decades challenging conventional approaches to feeding and caring for carnivores, and in this conversation we explore one of the foundations of his work: why he believes raw meaty bones are so important to canine health and wellbeing.

But this conversation goes far beyond what belongs in the bowl.

We explore the dog as a facultative carnivore and what that might tell us about nourishment, behaviour and physiology. Tom also introduces his thinking around cybernetics — the idea that living systems are interconnected and regulated through feedback — and how this framework led him to develop a hypothesis about the relationship between periodontal disease and the wider health of carnivores.

In this episode, we explore:

  • Why Tom believes raw meaty bones are fundamental to the health of carnivores
  • What it means to consider the dog as a facultative carnivore
  • The relationship between food, behaviour, physiology and environment
  • Why the mouth may be far more significant to whole-body health than we traditionally consider

Revisited: Why Neutering Is No Longer an Option with Dr Lise Hansen15 août 202601:13:30

What does it mean to be a responsible dog guardian when science asks us to rethink what we've always believed?

In this Revisited episode of Mystic Dog Mama, I'm joined by holistic veterinarian Dr. Lise Hansen for one of the podcast's most listened-to and talked-about conversations.

For many of us, routine neutering was simply part of responsible dog ownership. It was the advice we were given, and we made those decisions with the best information available at the time.

But science evolves.

As our understanding of the body's interconnected systems has deepened, so too has our understanding of the long-term health implications of routinely removing a major part of the endocrine system. This conversation explores what that growing body of research means for our dogs, and how it invites us to rethink not only neutering itself, but our wider role as their guardians.

Together, we explore:

✨ Why routine neutering has become one of the biggest paradigm shifts in modern canine healthcare

✨ What the latest research tells us about the role of the endocrine system and why sex hormones influence far more than reproduction

✨ The changes to the World Small Animal Veterinary Association's reproductive guidelines and what they mean for dog guardians

✨ Common concerns around pyometra, testicular cancer and population control, and how these fit into the current evidence

✨ Alternative approaches, including hormone-sparing procedures, and when they may be appropriate

✨ Why holistic health isn't about focusing on one decision in isolation, but supporting the whole dog through nutrition, lifestyle and informed healthcare choices

✨ What this conversation teaches us about curiosity, discernment and allowing our understanding to evolve as new evidence emerges

One of the themes I return to throughout this conversation is that we all make the best decisions we can with the information available to us at the time. This episode isn't about blame or guilt. It's about remaining open to learning, asking thoughtful questions, and becoming more informed advocates for the dogs who share their lives with us.

Whether you're making decisions for a young puppy, caring for an adult dog, or simply interested in how science continues to shape the future of canine health, I hope this conversation gives you plenty to reflect on.

Revisited: When We Don't Know the Way - Tarot, Dogs & Trusting the Journey with Sarah Vrba08 août 202601:10:56

What if your dog isn’t just your companion, but also your teacher?

In this episode of Mystic Dog Mama, I’m joined by intuitive tarot and astrology expert and fellow Mystic Dog Mama, Sarah Verba, for a conversation about dogs, the mystical path, intuition, and what our animal companions reveal about ourselves.

I have followed Sarah’s work for years, and I’ve always been drawn to the way she uses tarot and astrology not as tools for predicting a fixed future, but as invitations to reconnect with ourselves, explore our inner landscapes, and move through life with curiosity and compassion.

Together, we explore what it means to embrace the unknown, to question the conditioning we’ve inherited, and to allow ourselves to be works in progress rather than constantly striving towards some imagined finished version of ourselves.

In this conversation, we dive into:

✨ How intuitive tarot differs from traditional approaches and why tarot can be a tool for self-reflection rather than fear

✨ The mystical path as a process of deconditioning, unlearning, and reconnecting with our own inner wisdom

✨ Why being “in process” can feel so uncomfortable — and why allowing ourselves to be seen while we’re figuring things out can create deeper connection

✨ The appearance of dogs in tarot, particularly in the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, and what the dog archetype can teach us about companionship, instinct, intuition, and returning to our wild selves

✨ Why dogs are such powerful guides back into nature, the present moment, and the magic of everyday life

✨ The wisdom of Chihuahua time (something Lucky has taught me very well!)

Sarah shares her own journey with her rescue dog and the ways he has challenged her to embrace her instincts, her needs, and her wild nature. We talk about how our dogs often invite us into the very places we might otherwise avoid — uncertainty, vulnerability, change, and the unknown.

This episode is a beautiful reminder that our dogs are not just animals who walk beside us. They are beings who can help us see ourselves more clearly, reconnect with the natural world, and remember that the path is rarely a straight line.

Revisited: Your Dog's Microbiome - An Unexpected Window to the Soul with Dr Odette Suter01 août 202601:16:20

What if the microbiome is about more than digestion?

When we hear the word microbiome, the conversation usually turns to probiotics, gut health, allergies, or finding the perfect supplement. While those topics matter, this revisited conversation with holistic veterinarian Dr. Odette Suter invites us to explore something much deeper.

Together, we ask what the microbiome might reveal about the nature of health itself. If we—and our dogs—are made up of trillions of microbes that influence everything from immunity and behaviour to our relationship with the natural world, what does that mean for how we understand ourselves? Where does consciousness begin? And what if supporting the microbiome isn't simply about fixing the gut, but about remembering that we are part of a much larger living system?

Alongside these bigger questions, Dr. Suter shares practical insights into nurturing your dog's microbiome, the limitations of many probiotic products, why early life matters so much, and how nutrition, movement, stress, and connection all influence health.

Whether you're curious about gut health or simply love exploring the deeper lessons our dogs offer us, I hope this conversation leaves you seeing both your dog—and yourself—a little differently.

In this episode, we explore:

  • What the microbiome actually is—and why it matters far beyond digestion.
  • Why microbes may influence far more of our lives than we realise.
  • How the microbiome challenges our ideas of health, identity, and consciousness.
  • Why true healing requires looking beyond symptoms.
  • The connection between the gut, nervous system, emotions, and environment.
  • The role of nature, movement, and diversity in supporting a healthy microbiome.
  • Why many probiotic products don't always live up to their promises.
  • How our dogs invite us back into relationship with ourselves and the living world.

Revisited: What Archaeology Reveals About Dogs (and Why It Matters Today) with David Ian Howe25 juil. 202601:15:50

Part of the Mystic Dog Mama Revisited summer series – conversations that continue to shape the way I think about dogs, nourishment and what it means to be human.

This was the very first interview I ever recorded for the Mystic Dog Mama podcast, and looking back, I couldn't have chosen a better place to begin.

Before we can talk about nutrition, behaviour, training or holistic health, we first have to ask a more fundamental question:

What is a dog?

In this fascinating conversation, archaeologist and anthropologist David Ian Howe invites us to step back in time and explore the extraordinary relationship between humans and dogs. Together, we discuss co-evolution, ancient mythologies, and what archaeology can teach us about one of humanity's oldest and most enduring partnerships.

Listening back nearly three years later, I'm struck by how many of the ideas that now sit at the heart of Mystic Dog Mama were already quietly present in this conversation. It reminds us that understanding our dogs isn't just about learning more about them - it’s also about learning more about ourselves.

In this episode, we explore:

  • Why the story of dogs is also the story of humans
  • What archaeology and anthropology reveal about our relationship with dogs
  • How dogs have appeared in myths and cultures throughout history
  • Why understanding what a dog is changes how we care for them
  • What our relationship with dogs can teach us about being human

Flea Treatments in the Home: What Happens After They're Applied? with Dr Tilly Collins18 juil. 202601:05:47

Where do flea and tick treatments really go?

For many of us, protecting our dogs from fleas and ticks has become part of responsible care. But what happens when the products we use to protect our dogs raise wider questions about environmental health, scientific uncertainty and the choices we make every day?

In this thought-provoking conversation, I'm joined by Dr Tilly Collins, Senior Fellow & Deputy Director of Imperial College London's Centre for Environmental Policy, whose research is transforming our understanding of how flea and tick pesticides move beyond the animals they're applied to.

Together, we explore what happens after these products are used, how residues have been found not only in rivers and waterways but within our homes, and why this is opening up important new conversations about parasite management, environmental responsibility and the need for further research.

Rather than offering simple answers, this episode invites us to ask better questions.

Because perhaps the future of parasite management isn't about eliminating every risk—it's about understanding risk more deeply and making thoughtful, evidence-informed decisions for the individual dog in front of us.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Why flea and tick control is far more complex than many of us realise
  • How modern flea and tick pesticides work
  • What Dr Collins' research has revealed about pesticide residues in homes, including household dust, mop water and dog bedding
  • Whether fleas may be developing resistance to some commonly used products
  • What we really mean when we talk about "risk"
  • How to move towards a more personalised, risk-based approach to parasite management
  • The need for further independent research into the long-term impacts on animals, people and the environment
  • How we can begin shifting from routine intervention towards thoughtful stewardship

Arthritis Isn't the End of the Road: Arthritis in Dogs & Creating a Full Life Together with Dr Hannah Capon11 juil. 202601:20:20

How do you know if your dog is living with arthritis?

The truth is, many dogs show signs of arthritis long before they're diagnosed. What we often dismiss as "slowing down with age" can actually be subtle signs of chronic pain—changes in behaviour, movement, sleep, or the way they engage with the world around them.

In this episode, I'm joined by Dr Hannah Capon, veterinary surgeon and founder of Canine Arthritis Management (CAM), to explore how we can better recognise arthritis in dogs, support dogs living with chronic pain, and help them continue to live full, meaningful lives.

Together, we discuss the early signs of arthritis in dogs, why arthritis isn't simply an "old dog" disease, the importance of maintaining a healthy body condition, and why there is no single supplement, medication, or therapy that can manage arthritis on its own. Instead, Hannah shares why the best arthritis care is always multi-modal - bringing together veterinary medicine, rehabilitation, nutrition, movement, environmental adaptations, and compassionate day-to-day support.

But this conversation goes far beyond canine arthritis.

We talk about caregiver fatigue, grief, kindness, and why supporting ourselves is an important part of supporting our dogs.

This episode is a reminder that arthritis doesn't have to mean the end of adventure, connection, or joy.

As Hannah says so beautifully:

"Arthritis isn't the end of the road—it's a new direction."

In this episode, you'll learn:

🐾 The early signs and symptoms of arthritis in dogs

🐾 How body condition, breeding, sport and previous injuries influence joint health

🐾 What a multi-modal arthritis management plan looks like

🐾 How movement and appropriate exercise support dogs with arthritis

🐾 Why protecting your own wellbeing is part of caring for a dog with chronic pain

About Dr Hannah Capon

Dr Hannah Capon is a veterinary surgeon and the founder of Canine Arthritis Management (CAM), an award-winning organisation dedicated to improving the lives of dogs living with arthritis through education, evidence-based resources, and practical support for both veterinary professionals and dog guardians.

Content note

The Truth About Pet Supplements: What's Helping, What's Harming & What's Just Hype, with Alison Daniel27 juin 202601:25:16

We live in a time where it can feel like there's a supplement for everything.

One for the gut. One for the joints. One for calm. One for detox. One for immunity. And somewhere along the way, many dog guardians find themselves managing an ever-growing collection of powders, capsules, tinctures, and "just-in-case" products—all in the name of doing the best for their dogs.

But when does supplementation become supportive, and when does it become too much?

In this episode, I'm joined by Alison Daniel of My Pet Nutritionist to explore the role supplements actually play in canine health. We discuss what supplements are designed to do, when they're genuinely needed, and why they should never be seen as a replacement for good nutrition.

Together, we unpack:

• The difference between supporting health and chasing the latest trend
• Why food should always be the foundation
• How to identify when a supplement may actually be beneficial
• The common mistakes guardians make when supplementing
• How to prioritise supplements when budgets are limited
• The rise of all-in-one supplements and "just-in-case" supplementation
• What to look for in a high-quality supplement
• Red flags and misleading marketing claims to watch out for
• The risks of over-supplementation and why more isn't always better

Whether your dog takes no supplements at all or has an entire cupboard dedicated to them, this conversation will help you approach supplementation with greater clarity, confidence, and intention.

Raw Feeding: What the Evidence Actually Says About Canine Health -Part 2 with Dr Anna Hielm-Björkman13 juin 202601:54:45

When people talk about raw feeding, the conversation often begins - and ends - with pathogens.

But what if that's causing us to overlook much bigger questions?

In Part 2 of my conversation with veterinarian and canine nutrition researcher Dr. Anna Hielm-Björkman of the University of Helsinki's independent research group, DogRisk, we explore what researchers are beginning to discover now that raw-fed dogs are finally being studied more closely.

We dive into one of the most controversial topics in canine nutrition: food safety and pathogen risk. But we also look beyond the headlines to examine how risk is assessed, what the evidence actually shows, and whether our focus on acute hazards sometimes prevents us from investigating potential long-term health outcomes.

From there, we explore some of the most fascinating questions emerging from fresh feeding research:

• What benefits are researchers seeing repeatedly in fresh-fed dogs?
• Are the advantages of fresh feeding linked to rawness itself, or simply reduced processing?
• How should we think about the relationship between dogs, wolves, and diet?
• Do dogs actually need plants?
• Why does nutrient form matter as much as nutrient quantity?
• What happens metabolically when dogs consume fresh foods versus ultra-processed diets?
• Why might healthy fresh-fed dogs display different bloodwork values than conventionally fed dogs?

This is a thoughtful, nuanced conversation about evidence, curiosity, and the questions we may not have been asking.

Whether you feed raw, gently cooked, kibble with fresh additions, or are simply curious about canine nutrition, this episode offers a fascinating look at what we're learning as research begins to catch up with practice.

Thinking Like a Homeopath: A Deep Dive into Homeopathy for Dogs and Humans06 juin 202601:55:03

What if one of the most important skills for supporting your dog's wellbeing was learning how to observe more closely?

In this fascinating and wide-ranging conversation, I sit down with professional classical homeopath Lucy Reynolds to explore the world of homeopathy—for our dogs, ourselves, and the animals in our care.

Whether you're completely new to homeopathy, cautiously curious, or already have remedies in your cupboard, this episode offers a thoughtful introduction to the principles behind this often misunderstood modality.

With a background as an Army officer and helicopter pilot, Lucy brings a uniquely analytical and methodical approach to homeopathy. Together, we explore what it means to "think like a homeopath," how homeopathy differs from herbal medicine, where it can sit alongside conventional veterinary and medical care, and why observation is one of the most powerful tools available to any guardian.

Lucy also shares her experience working with farmers through Homeopathy at Wellie Level (HAWL), helping empower animal caretakers to use homeopathy confidently within their own care protocols.

One of my favourite parts of this conversation is Lucy's practical deep dive into homeopathic remedies. She shares the remedies she recommends keeping on hand for both humans and dogs, how to think about when they might be useful, and practical guidance around dosing and administration.

This episode beautifully complements my recent conversation with Dr Lise Hansen, offering another perspective on what it means to approach health through the lens of the whole individual rather than simply managing symptoms.

Revisited: Canine First Aid - What Every Guardian Should Know with Rachel Bean, RVN30 mai 202601:04:03

In this revisited episode of the Mystic Dog Mama podcast, I’m bringing back an incredibly important conversation with canine first aid instructor and registered veterinary nurse, Rachel Bean.

When we think about caring for our dogs, we often focus on food, supplements, enrichment, and daily wellbeing — but knowing what to do in an emergency is one of the most empowering skills a dog guardian can have.

Because when something unexpected happens, panic can quickly take over.

This conversation is designed to help you feel calmer, more prepared, and more confident in those moments that matter most.

Rachel shares practical, accessible guidance on:

  • what to do if your dog is choking
  • handling bleeding and injuries
  • canine CPR basics
  • paw pad burns and summer safety
  • common first aid myths
  • what to avoid if you suspect heatstroke
  • essential items to keep in your dog’s first aid kit

Whether you’re building your first canine first aid kit or simply want to feel more equipped in an emergency, this episode offers practical knowledge that every dog guardian should have.

This conversation originally aired in December 2024, but it is just as relevant today - especially as we move into warmer weather and more outdoor adventures with our dogs.

Keep a notebook nearby for this one. You’ll likely walk away with a few things you’ll want to remember.

Raw Feeding: What the Evidence Actually Says About Canine Health (Part 1) with Dr Anna Hielm-Björkman23 mai 202601:39:39

What if one of the biggest problems in canine nutrition is that we’ve barely studied fresh food at all?

In this deep and thought-provoking conversation, I sit down with veterinarian and researcher Dr. Anna Hielm-Björkman from the University of Helsinki’s DogRisk research group - one of the only independent, university-connected teams in the world researching raw feeding and fresh food diets in dogs.

But this episode isn’t about telling you what you should feed your dog.

It’s about asking a much bigger question:

How do we actually know what we know about canine nutrition?

Together, we explore how pet food research is conducted, why so much of it focuses on ultra-processed diets, and what happens when fresh and raw food are finally brought into the scientific conversation.

Dr Anna shares her own journey from conventional veterinary medicine into a more integrative approach to canine health — including acupuncture, nutrition, and preventative care — and why she became passionate about researching the relationship between food and chronic disease.

We also dive into:

  • why there is still surprisingly little independent long-term research on canine nutrition,
  • how veterinary nutrition education is shaped,
  • what “complete and balanced” actually means,
  • why the form of a nutrient matters just as much as the nutrient itself,
  • how processing changes the way a dog’s body metabolizes and utilizes food,
  • and why fresh-fed dogs may require entirely different frameworks for feeding guidelines, lab reference ranges, and health evaluation.

This is a conversation about nuance, evidence, and curiosity beyond fear, marketing, and polarized internet debates.

Whether you feed raw, gently cooked, wet food, kibble, or somewhere in between, this episode invites us to think more deeply about what health really looks like for our dogs - and how science can evolve when we begin asking better questions.

And this is only part one.

In the next episode, Anna and I will dive into one of the most controversial aspects of this conversation: pathogens, risk, food safety, and the myths surrounding raw feeding.

If this episode resonated with you, please share it with a fellow dog guardian, leave a review, or tag us on Instagram @mysticdogmama with your biggest takeaway. These conversations matter because the future of canine health depends on the questions we’re willing to ask.

What is Homeopathy, Really?: An Entirely Different Model of Healing, with Dr Lise Hansen16 mai 202601:32:25

In today’s episode, we’re exploring one of the most misunderstood approaches to healing: homeopathy.

But beyond the debates, what is homeopathy, really?

How does it differ from conventional medicine? Why does it view symptoms so differently? And what happens when we begin seeing symptoms not simply as problems to suppress, but as communication from the body itself?

Joining me for this conversation is holistic veterinarian and veterinary homeopath Dr. Lise Hansen. Together, we explore homeopathy as an entirely different model of healing - one rooted in the idea of supporting health, observing the individual as a whole being, and working with the body rather than against an ailment.

We discuss:

  • what homeopathy actually is (and isn’t)
  • the philosophy behind homeopathic healing
  • how homeopathy differs from allopathic medicine
  • why two dogs with the same diagnosis may receive different remedies
  • the meaning of symptoms through a homeopathic lens
  • Dr. Hansen’s suggestions for a basic homeopathic first aid kit
  • when homeopathy may not be appropriate and when conventional veterinary care is essential

This episode isn’t about telling you what to believe. It’s an invitation into a broader, deeper conversation about healing, vitality, and the ways we’ve been taught to think about the body - both our dogs’ and our own.

Whether you’re deeply familiar with homeopathy, a little bit curious, or even a little bit skeptical, I hope this conversation encourages greater curiosity, discernment, and reflection around what it truly means to support health.

If this episode resonated with you, share it with a fellow dog mama who might need to hear it 💛

Listening Beyond Behavior: A Conversation on Shamanic Dog Training & Deep Connection with Tamryn Fudge09 mai 202601:06:17

In this episode of the Mystic Dog Mama podcast, I’m joined by Shamanic Dog Trainer, Tamryn Fudge, for a deeply expansive conversation exploring what becomes possible when we move beyond behavior modification, and begin relating to dogs through connection, cooperation, nervous system awareness, and deeper listening.

Together, we explore the space where science and soul meet in our relationships with dogs. From modern dog culture and the limitations of compliance-based approaches, to intuition, regulation, energetic awareness, and ancient wisdom traditions - this conversation invites us to reconsider not only how we work with dogs… but how we live alongside them.

Tamryn shares how her path evolved from veterinary medicine into dog training, animal communication, and then into a more relational and shamanic approach. She shares what she has learned through her work with dogs, humans, and Peruvian shamanic lineage teachings. We discuss the difference between compliance and cooperation, what dogs may be communicating beneath behavior, and how our own nervous systems, emotional patterns, and presence shape the relationship far more than many of us realize.

We also dive into the realities of living with challenging dogs - reactivity, fear, sensitivity, overwhelm - and the profound ways these experiences can become portals into our own healing, self-awareness, and transformation.

This episode is not about abandoning science or practical support. It’s about widening the lens and asking deeper questions. It’s about remembering that dogs are not simply beings to manage, but conscious participants in relationship.

Inside this conversation, we explore:

  • What “shamanic dog training” actually means
  • The difference between compliance, cooperation, and connection
  • Why behavior is often communication, not simply something to stop or fix
  • How dogs respond to our nervous systems, emotional states, and presence
  • What modern humans may be missing in our relationships with dogs
  • How challenging dogs can become catalysts for growth and healing
  • Tamryn’s experience studying within a Peruvian shamanic lineage
  • What ancient wisdom traditions can teach us about relationship, healing, and interconnection
  • How to begin listening to your dog differently in everyday life
  • Why deep connection with dogs begins within ourselves

Whether you’re navigating challenges with your dog, longing for a deeper relationship, or simply curious about what dogs might be helping us remember in this moment in time, this conversation offers a grounded yet expansive perspective on living in partnership with our dogs.

Wellness 3.0: Why You're Not Broken & Neither Is Your Dog with Nicole Barton04 mai 202601:04:16

If you’ve ever felt like you’re “too much,” too sensitive, or quietly carrying parts of yourself that long to be expressed - this conversation may feel like a remembering.

What if healing isn’t about fixing what’s wrong with you - but remembering what has always been true?

In this deeply soulful conversation, I’m joined by Nicole Barton - healer, archetypal guide, and founder of the Archetypal Apothecary - to explore the concept of Wellness 3.0 and what becomes possible when we stop seeing ourselves as broken.

Together, we journey into the world of archetypes, sensitivity, homeopathy, shadow work, and the symbolic power of the witch - not as a label, but as an invitation to reclaim the parts of ourselves we’ve learned to hide.

Nicole shares her own path through chronic fatigue, burnout, and healing, and how those experiences became a doorway into understanding that our wounds often hold the medicine we are here to offer.

This conversation explores what it means to come back into the body, to create safety within ourselves, and to reconnect with our own wildness - especially in a world that often teaches us to suppress it.

And because this is Mystic Dog Mama, we also explore the mirror our dogs provide: how they reflect the parts of ourselves that feel too sensitive, too emotional, too much - and how healing ourselves can deepen the way we relate to them.

In this episode, we explore:

  • What Wellness 3.0 really means - and why healing isn’t about being fixed
  • How sensitivity can become a gift rather than something to overcome
  • The archetype of the witch as a symbol of healing, intuition, and reclamation
  • Nicole’s personal journey through chronic fatigue, homeopathy, and archetypal healing
  • The connection between wounds, shadow work, and discovering your gifts
  • How our dogs often mirror the parts of us we’ve learned to suppress
  • What it means to reclaim your own inner medicine

Sacred Illness: When the Body Becomes the Messenger with Dr Erin Hayford25 avr. 202601:07:02

What if illness wasn’t the enemy?

What if symptoms weren’t signs that the body had failed, but invitations into a deeper conversation?

In this deeply rich episode, I’m joined by Dr. Erin Hayford of Aurora Somatic Medicine and the host of the Sacred Illness podcast to explore a radically different understanding of disease, healing, and the intelligence of the body.

Drawing from her own experience with Crohn’s disease and her work in naturopathic and mind-body medicine, Dr Erin invites us into a new paradigm - one where illness is not simply something to fix or overcome, but something that holds meaning, wisdom, and even transformation.

Together, we explore what it means to listen to symptoms as messengers, to understand disease as part of a healing process, and to cultivate a relationship with the body rooted in curiosity rather than fear.

This conversation is both grounding and expansive. It is an invitation to consider that healing is not always about cure, but about becoming.

And because this is Mystic Dog Mama, we also explore how our dogs’ illnesses can become mirrors and initiations of their own -  inviting us into deeper awareness, responsibility, and relationship.

In This Episode, We Explore:

* Why illness may not be your body failing you - but your body trying to communicate

* The concept of “Sacred Illness” and how symptoms can hold meaning

* The innate healing intelligence of nature and the human body

* What dis-ease may be asking you to become

* Why healing is a verb - not a destination

* The paradox of not wanting illness, while also recognising its gifts

* How our dogs’ symptoms and illnesses can become invitations for our own growth

* What happens when healing doesn’t look the way we expected

* How curiosity, trust, and acceptance can change our relationship with illness

This Episode Is For You If…

* You’ve ever felt betrayed or confused by illness - your own or your dog’s

* You’re navigating chronic symptoms and longing for a deeper understanding

* You feel called toward a more holistic, mind-body-soul approach to healing

* You want to move beyond fear and into a more trusting relationship with the body

* You believe healing may be about more than symptom management

* You’re ready to explore what illness might be asking of you

Cancer in Dogs: What’s Really Behind It (& What You Can Do) with Dr. Judy Jasek18 avr. 202600:56:25

Cancer in dogs is one of the most confronting diagnoses a guardian can face.

It often arrives suddenly, bringing fear, urgency, and a sense that decisions need to be made immediately - before there is even space to fully understand what is happening.

In this episode, I’m joined by integrative veterinarian Dr. Judy Jasek for a grounded, holistic exploration of cancer in dogs - what’s really behind it, and what we can do to support our dogs in a more informed, conscious way.

We begin with the basics: what cancer actually is in the body, and how it develops within the wider internal environment of a dog’s system.

From there, we explore the deeper terrain - how toxicity, chronic inflammation, stagnation, and gut health may all play a role in the conditions that allow disease to develop.

We also discuss the importance of species-appropriate nutrition, and how everyday lifestyle and environmental factors can either support or challenge long-term health.

For guardians navigating a diagnosis, we talk about how to approach decision-making in a way that stays centred on your dog’s overall wellbeing—not just the disease itself.

This includes:

  • What to consider when exploring treatment options
  • Key questions to ask your veterinarian
  • How to stay grounded when faced with overwhelming information

We also open a conversation that is often left unspoken in clinical settings: the emotional and energetic dimension of caring for a sick dog.

Our dogs are deeply attuned to us. They feel our states, respond to our nervous systems, and move with our emotional reality. Understanding this adds another layer of awareness - not blame, but responsibility and presence.

At the heart of this episode is a simple but powerful reframe:

Health is not something we force into being.
It is the body’s natural state when it is supported.

And when we begin to understand more about what is really behind cancer, we don’t lose power - we gain clarity about where our influence actually lies.

This conversation is for any dog guardian who wants to move beyond fear, and into a more informed, connected, and grounded relationship with their dog’s health.

Tapping Into Healing: EFT, Trauma & the Nervous System in Dogs with Dr Laura Donaldson11 avr. 202601:24:06

What if your dog’s anxiety, fear, or reactivity isn’t something to fix, but something to listen to?

In this powerful and thought-provoking episode I am joined by expert dog trainer, behaviour consultant, and certified trauma professional, Dr. Laura Donaldson, to explore Clinical Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) - also known as tapping - and its potential to support deep emotional healing in both humans and dogs.

Blending science, somatics, and the unseen bond between species, this conversation invites you to consider a different approach to behaviour - one rooted not in control or correction, but in nervous system regulation, safety, and connection.

Together, we explore what’s really happening beneath the surface of common behavioural challenges, and why so many dogs (and their guardians) remain stuck despite doing “everything right.”

You’ll learn how tapping on acupressure points can influence the body’s stress response, how trauma is stored and processed in the nervous system, and why emerging research around memory reconsolidation is shifting the way we understand healing.

Through the lens of surrogate tapping, we explore the how working on your own emotional state can create meaningful shifts in your dog - not through force, but through the deep, often invisible connection you share.

In This Episode, We Cover:

  • What Clinical EFT (tapping) is and how it works
  • The science: neurobiology, stress response & memory reconsolidation
  • How dogs experience trauma and emotional stress
  • Why some behavioural issues don’t resolve with training alone
  • Surrogate tapping: can working on yourself help your dog?
  • The human–dog emotional connection (mirror neurons, resonance & beyond)
  • Consent, safety, and ethical considerations in healing work with dogs
  • Moving beyond “fixing” into true co-regulation and relationship

At its heart, this is a conversation about relationship, and about learning to meet your dog not as a problem to solve, but as a sentient being with their own nervous system, their own story, and their own path.

And perhaps, as a mirror, guide, or invitation into your own healing, too.

If you’ve ever felt that your dog is reflecting something back to you, if you’re curious about the connection between your emotional world and theirs, or if you’re searching for a more compassionate, holistic way to support your dog - this episode will open something up in you.

What Are We Really Feeding Our Dogs? The Dog, the Bowl & the Stories We've Been Told, with Dr Tom Lonsdale04 avr. 202601:28:58

In this episode, I’m joined by Dr Tom Lonsdale - veterinary surgeon, long-time advocate for raw meaty bones, and author of the new book, Spin Doctors.

This conversation invites us to step back from the noise, the labels, and the often polarised debates around dog food—and instead, to look more closely at the foundations those conversations are built upon.

Because this isn’t about kibble versus raw. It’s about understanding the animal in front of us… and the systems that have shaped how we care for them.

We explore what it means to feed a dog in alignment with their biology as a facultative carnivore, and how modern feeding practices compare to that reality. From feeding trials and the origins of “balanced and complete,” to the rise of ultra-processed diets, and the growing conversation around vegan dog food, BARF, Prey Model Raw, etc—this episode gently but courageously questions the narratives many of us have inherited.

We also speak about trust, how it is formed and outsources - and what it might look like to begin reclaiming it—not through fear or perfectionism, but through curiosity, observation, and discernment.

At its heart, this conversation is not just about food. It’s about power, conditioning, and the quiet invitation to see more clearly.

A question to sit with:

What assumptions have I made about how to feed my dog—and where did they come from?

If this episode resonated:

Beyond the Walk: Rethinking Movement, Enrichment & Agency with Niki French28 mars 202601:10:53

Walking our dogs has become one of those unquestioned “shoulds” of dog guardianship.

But what if it’s not always the most supportive choice?

In this conversation with dog trainer and behaviour consultant, Niki French, we gently challenge the idea that going for a walk is always the best thing for our dogs—and explore what it really means to meet the needs of the dog in front of us.

We dive into ACE Free Work, developed by Sarah Fisher - a practice that might look simple on the surface, but offers something profound underneath:

A way for our dogs to be, rather than perform.

Through thoughtfully designed setups using everyday objects, ACE Free Work allows dogs to:

  • Move at their own pace
  • Make choices without pressure
  • Process their environment
  • Regulate their nervous system
  • Communicate in ways we often miss in more structured settings

We explore how this work can be especially supportive for:

  • Dogs who find walks overwhelming or dysregulating
  • Dogs recovering from surgery or injury
  • Guardians who want to better understand behaviour beyond labels

We also talk about the intention behind Don’t Walk Your Dog Day happening on April 2nd - a gentle disruption of the idea that going for a walk is always the answer. Because sometimes, the behaviour we’re trying to “fix” is actually a message. And sometimes, the most supportive thing we can do
is create space to listen.

This episode is an invitation to shift from doing to noticing, from controlling to collaborating, and from assumption to curiosity.

Rethinking Flea & Tick Prevention: A More Conscious Approach with Dr Lise Hansen21 mars 202601:05:19

Are flea, tick, and worm treatments actually necessary for dogs—or have we just been told they are?

If you’ve ever felt uneasy about routine parasite prevention, this episode will help you take a more informed, conscious approach.

I’m joined by holistic veterinarian Dr Lise Hansen to explore how we can move beyond fear-based, one-size-fits-all flea, tick, and worm treatments… and instead consider what’s truly right for our individual dogs.

This episode is released on World Rethink Flea and Tick Prevention Day—a day created to raise awareness around the routine use of chemical parasite treatments, and their potential impact on our dogs, our ecosystems, and ourselves.

Because true prevention isn’t about doing more.
It’s about doing what’s right for your dog.

🐾 In this episode, we cover:

  • Flea, tick, and worm prevention for dogs
  • The risks and realities of routine chemical treatments
  • How to assess your dog’s individual parasite risk
  • When treatments might be necessary (and how to approach them consciously)
  • What to do if you find a tick on your dog
  • Why exposure doesn’t always lead to illness
  • Natural and holistic approaches to parasite prevention
  • What “true prevention” really means

🌿 A more conscious way forward

I also share how I use my F.E.T.C.H. framework - Fresh food, Energetics, Targeted care, Curiosity, and Holistic health - to support dogs from the ground up, whether or not chemical treatments are part of the picture.

Feeding Behaviour: The Links Between Anxiety, Reactivity & Nutrition with Sam van Eggermond14 mars 202601:09:57

When behaviour begins in the body

When a dog struggles with anxiety, impulsivity, or reactivity, the conversation almost always starts with training.

But what if behaviour doesn’t only begin with what we see on the outside? What if part of the story begins inside the body - in the gut, the nervous system, and the nutrients that shape them both?

In this episode, I’m joined by fellow canine nutrition consultant and behaviour professional Sam van Eggermond for a fascinating conversation exploring the emerging connections between nutrition, the gut microbiome, and behaviour in dogs.

Sam’s journey into this work began in shelters and rescue environments, supporting dogs with complex behavioural challenges. Over time, she started noticing patterns. Many of the dogs struggling most with anxiety, impulsivity, or reactivity were also dealing with digestive issues, sensitivities, or diets that simply weren’t supporting their physiology.

Those observations sparked a deeper investigation into nutrition and the gut microbiome - as well as a critical look at some of the research shaping behaviour advice today.

In this conversation, Sam brings both curiosity and nuance to a rapidly evolving field. Together, we explore how behaviour might sometimes be a biological signal as much as a training challenge, and why supporting the body can be an important part of supporting the mind.

In this episode we explore

  • Sam’s early work in shelters and rescues, and how it shaped her approach to behaviour and nutrition
    • The patterns she began noticing between digestive health and behavioural challenges
    • How nutrition and the gut microbiome may influence stress, mood, and emotional regulation in dogs
    • Why some studies on diet and behaviour deserve closer scrutiny
    • Questions guardians can begin asking when their dog is struggling with anxiety or reactivity
    • The vision behind the UK Centre for Canine Reactivity and Aggression dedicated to supporting dogs with complex behaviours, and the guardians who love them

What Street Dogs Can Teach Us About a Good Life: Rethinking Rescue and Welfare with Vanessa of Spicy Dogs Behaviour07 mars 202601:11:10

Around 80% of the world’s dogs are free-roaming, living in streets, villages, and communities alongside people rather than inside homes. Yet much of what we believe about dog welfare, safety, and rescue comes from a Western model of dog ownership.

In this episode, I’m joined by Vanessa of Spicy Dogs, a certified canine behaviour consultant based in Sri Lanka who helps adopters of village and street dogs understand behaviour through the lenses of ethology, trauma awareness, and co-regulation — building trust rather than control.

Together we explore the complexity of street dog lives, the tensions that arise when Western rescue impulses meet different cultural realities, and the deeper question: what actually makes a good life for a dog?

In this episode we discuss:

• What daily life looks like for street and village dogs
• Why the narrative of constant suffering can miss the richness of their lives
• How language and labels shape the way we see “street dogs”
• When rescue helps — and when it can unintentionally cause harm
• What can change when dogs are removed from their cultural and ecological context
• How different cultures understand dog welfare
• What street dogs might teach us about living alongside dogs rather than controlling them

This is a thoughtful, sometimes uncomfortable conversation that invites us to loosen our grip on what we think dogs should be - and see them through a wider cultural and ecological lens.

Transformation and Healing: New Paradigms for You & Your Dog with Dr Laura Donaldson and Annie Phenix28 févr. 202601:24:24

What if the future of dog care isn’t about better obedience…but about deeper safety?

In this powerful and deeply honest conversation, I sit down with Dr Laura Donaldson and Annie Phenix to explore their new course, Transformation and Healing: New Paradigms for You and Your Dog - and the larger shift happening in the world of canine care.

We begin by honouring the late Sarah Fisher, whose work invited us to learn from our dogs rather than simply lead or manage them. Her legacy threads through this entire conversation.

This episode challenges the long-held paradigm of compliance in our relationships with dogs. Instead of focusing on obedience and suppression of behaviour, we explore what becomes possible when we centre:

  • Deep safety
  • Emotional wellbeing
  • Agency
  • Resilience
  • Trust
  • Social support

We discuss what it means to become trauma-informed in our approach, and why that shift is transformative, not additive.

We explore:

✨ Why compliance has shaped traditional dog training - and why it’s time to question it✨ Dogs as somatic beings (and how we’ve forgotten that we are too)✨ The intelligence and wisdom of all life forms - and dismantling the “humans at the top” worldview✨ Getting curious about behaviour instead of correcting it✨ The links between pain, nutrition, and behaviour✨ The power of a collaborative care team (vet, behaviour professional, nutrition consultant)✨ Becoming your dog’s advocate - and how that often becomes the path to advocating for yourself

We also speak to something many of us feel but rarely name:

Your dog may be your greatest teacher.Your “difficult” dog may be your healer in disguise.

At the heart of this conversation is love - the kind that truly witnesses. The kind that listens. The kind that believes healing is possible.

Because we can heal from trauma. And so can our dogs.

And how embodied, courageous kindness is what moves us forward.

If you’ve ever felt there must be another way to be with your dog, then this episode is for you.

Witches, Dogs & Sovereign Leadership in a Changing World, with Kiki Keskinen21 févr. 202601:11:09

What if the longings you feel, the questions about leadership, intuition, service, and responsibility… are not random at all?

What if the being guiding you into them is the one lying at your feet?

In this profound and wide-ranging conversation, I sit down with Kiki Keskinen, founder of Witch School Canada, to explore what it means to become a woman who can trust herself in a time when the world is asking for new forms of leadership.

Together we wander through history, lineage, and the living, breathing practice of embodiment.

We talk about witches — not as aesthetics or trends — but as women committed to deep listening: to the land, to ancestors, to other generations, to one another, and to the animals walking beside us.

And yes… we talk about dogs as familiars, initiators, and mirrors.

Because again and again, they ask us the same sovereign question:

Who am I?
And where are we headed together?

Inside this episode, we explore:

✨ how the conquering of the wild is intertwined with the conquering of women
✨ what feminine leadership looks like as old systems unravel
✨ the role of the crone in our particular moment in history
✨ expanding our understanding of motherhood (hello, Mystic Dog Mamas)
✨ the medicine of discernment
✨ learning to serve rather than control
✨ why trusting yourself is a practice
✨ shapeshifting as a skill we urgently need right now
✨ and simple beginning exercises to strengthen your intuitive muscle

This conversation is both philosophical and practical, ancestral and immediate.

It will meet you wherever you are on your path - whether you’re just beginning to sense your intuition or already feeling the call to lead, to protect life, and to participate in healing our relationship with the Earth.

Your dog may have brought you here.

Let’s listen.

Building Resilience for You & Your Dog, with Dr Kate Lund14 févr. 202600:55:06

Our dogs have a way of ushering us into the exact lessons we need.

In this episode, I’m joined by psychologist and resilience specialist Dr Kate Lund to talk about what happens when the life we imagined falls apart — and how we build something meaningful on the other side.

Dr Kate shares the story of her childhood diagnosis of hydrocephalus, the many hospitalisations that followed, and how her dog Peanut helped her cultivate courage, hope, and orientation toward possibility. Those early experiences inspired her life’s work supporting paediatric patients and families navigating illness, trauma, and profound change.

We discuss why resilience is not toughness, positivity, or spiritual bypassing. It’s the set of skills, supports, and perspectives that help us optimise within the reality we are living.

You’ll hear:

✨ What resilience actually means in real life
✨ Why we must move through difficulty, not around it
✨ How strengthening our own resilience changes the way we show up for our dogs
✨ The surprising ways dogs demonstrate resilience every day
✨ How Dr Kate supported her own children through the terror of a lost puppy
✨ How that experience led her to partner with her therapy dog Wally serving families at a children’s hospital in Seattle
✨ Practical ways to build confidence and agency in kids and dogs
✨ What it means to “find a new normal”
✨ Why dogs so often arrive exactly when we need them most

I also share how Lucky has continually invited me to become more resilient — especially in the moments I doubted myself most — and how recognising his resilience changed our relationship.

If you’ve ever wondered how to stay open-hearted while the ground beneath you shifts… this conversation is for you!.

The Medicine of Cats: A Conversation on Healing, Agency & Our Animal Guides, with Pam Roussell of Purrrfectly Holistic07 févr. 202601:23:27

What if our cats aren’t here to be “managed” — but to initiate us?

In this episode of Mystic Dog Mama, I’m joined by Pam Roussell of Purrrfectly Holistic -  holistic pet health practitioner and devoted Cat Mom, for a conversation that invites us to slow down, listen more deeply, and rethink what health really means - for our animals and for ourselves.

Pam shares her journey from the fitness industry into holistic pet health, shaped by her own healing and profoundly catalysed by the loss of her beloved cat, Snow Bear. His passing became a threshold moment — one that called Pam into a deeper relationship with intuition, energetics, and the wisdom of the body.

Together, we explore the medicine of cats - why it’s time to bring cats fully into holistic health conversations, and what they can teach us about curiosity, mysticism, and conscious care. We talk about the importance of getting to root causes rather than treating symptoms, the unique stressors many cats face (especially indoor cats), and how emotional, energetic, spiritual, and physical health are inseparable.

This is also a conversation about agency - becoming your pet’s health advocate, trusting your intuition, and how learning to advocate for your animals inevitably helps you step into deeper advocacy for yourself.

We touch on the shadow side of the holistic health world, the danger of “doing everything right,” and why asking why matters more than ever. Pam also reflects on the spiritual significance of ailments, the different roles cats and dogs play in our spiritual development, and what the astrological shifts of 2026 and beyond are calling forward in how we think about health, healing, and support.

Pam also shares gentle, practical insights for supporting your feline companions, along with her own daily practices with her cats - grounding this expansive conversation in everyday devotion.

If your cat feels like a teacher, a mirror, or a guide in your life, this episode is an invitation to listen.

What We Do with What We'd Rather Not See: An Experiment with Dog Waste with Cllr Gill Thomas31 janv. 202600:56:23

Dog waste is one of those everyday realities most of us would prefer not to think about. We bag it, bin it, and move on. But what if the way we currently deal with dog poo is part of a bigger environmental and cultural problem? And what if it could be approached differently?

In this episode, I’m joined by Cllr Gill Thomas, a local councillor in Stroud and for litter and clean environment who is exploring an early-stage, experimental initiative to rethink how dog waste is handled - including the possibility of composting it safely and responsibly.

Gill brings a background in the creative arts into her work in local politics, and that perspective shapes how she approaches complex, often uncomfortable issues. Rather than defaulting to enforcement or blame, she’s asking questions about responsibility, systems, and what becomes possible when curiosity leads the way.

In our conversation, we explore:

  • Why dog waste is more than just a nuisance - and its real impact on the environment
  • How creative problem-solving can open new pathways in governance
  • What it means to take initiative without having all the answers
  • The early conversations Gill is having with scientists and researchers
  • Why pilot projects matter, and how local experiments can inspire wider change

This isn’t a polished solution or a finished programme. It’s a live inquiry into how we care for shared spaces, how we relate to waste, and what regeneration can look like at a very local, very human scale.

If you’re interested in conscious dog guardianship, environmental responsibility, and how meaningful change often starts with the things we’d rather not see - then this episode is for you.

Supporting Dogs Who Struggle with Handling: Consent-Based Bodywork Approaches with Lucy Tyrrell24 janv. 202600:53:51

Some dogs find being handled difficult.
And for guardians who are trying to support them, that reality can feel confusing, limiting, and quietly heartbreaking.

In this episode, I am joined by Lucy Tyrrell, a Galen Myotherapist and founder of Pawsitive Touch, for an honest, grounded conversation about consent-based bodywork for dogs — particularly dogs who are touch-averse, reactive, sensitive, or carrying trauma in their bodies.

Together, they explore what it means to truly listen to a dog’s nervous system, how to move away from the idea that care requires compliance, and how guardians can support their dogs without pushing past their boundaries.

As a mama of a dog who finds handling challenging, I know this episode will help other dog mamas who share the frustration of wanting to build a supportive care team, and feeling that some complementary therapies may not be accessible or appropriate for our dogs right now. Fortunately, as Lucy talks about positive and practical ways forward.

This episode is for you if:

  • Your dog struggles with being handled by others
  • You’ve felt unsure or conflicted about hands-on therapies
  • You want to support your dog’s body in a way that feels safe and respectful
  • You’re curious about consent-based approaches to care
  • You want to learn how to do less forcing and more listening

✨ Stay tuned until the end of the episode, where Lucy shares details about a special online workshop designed to help guardians learn powerful, practical, consent-based massage techniques they can use themselves to support their dogs at home.

This conversation offers a different way forward — one rooted in trust, agency, and meeting the dog in front of you.

To connect with Lucy and learn more about her upcoming workshop on Sunday, 8th February at 12pm UK time, email her at: lucy@caninetherapy.co.uk

The Healing Power of Presence: Why Slowing Down & Gentle Touch Matter More Than We Think, with Anja Žekelj17 janv. 202601:05:06

In this rich and soulful conversation, I’m joined by Anja Žekelj, founder of Wigglebeat, to explore what it really means to heal our dogs, and ourselves, when we move beyond fixing, forcing, or striving for perfection.

Anja shares her journey of working with dogs and the evolution of her Herbal Ball Therapy, a gentle, deeply intuitive modality that supports the nervous system, circulation, and emotional well-being of dogs - especially those who are sensitive, aging, or navigating recovery.

But this conversation goes far beyond any single therapy.

Together, we talk about:

  • What it looks like to follow intuition and inner guidance when caring for our dogs, and how to tell the difference between fear and true knowing
  • The challenges and shadows of the holistic dog world, including pressure, comparison, and the subtle belief that we should be able to “do it all right”
  • Why healing is not the same as fixing, and how acceptance can be one of the most loving and confronting acts of care
  • The emotional complexity of supporting a dog through change, decline, or uncertainty
  • Anja’s deeply personal experience of caring for her senior dog after a stroke, and what that journey has taught her about presence, grief, trust, and letting go

If you’ve ever felt caught between your heart, your intuition, and the overwhelming noise of “shoulds” in the holistic space, then this episode is for you.

Walking the Threshold: A Winter Solstice Ritual with Lucky & My Guiding Word for 202621 déc. 202500:13:08

This episode is a little different.

It was recorded outside, on a quiet winter dog walk with Lucky. No polish. Just presence.

As the Winter Solstice arrives I wanted to mark what’s ready to be released, and what’s quietly asking to be carried forward.

In this episode, I share:

  • A simple, grounded Winter Solstice ritual you can do with (or without) your dog
  • The guiding word I’ve chosen for 2026, and how it emerged not from force, but from feeling
  • Reflections on rest, darkness, and the wisdom of not rushing the light

Instead of New Year’s resolutions or becoming a “better” version of yourself, this is about declarations.

It’s about honouring the in-between.
Letting the dark do its work.

Come meet me here, at the threshold.

Low Tox Living Made Simple: What Actually Matters (For You & Your Dog) with Alexx Stuart20 déc. 202500:58:29

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by all the things you “should” be doing to live a low-tox life, for yourself or for your dog, this conversation is going to feel like a deep exhale.

I’m joined by Alexx Stuart, founder of Low Tox Life and someone who has spent over a decade exploring what it really means to reduce our toxic load - physically, emotionally, environmentally, and spiritually. Alexx has interviewed more than 450 leading voices in health and wellbeing, but what I love most about her approach is how permission-giving and grounded she is. This isn’t about perfection. It isn’t about throwing everything out or hitting some imaginary benchmark of purity.

It’s about presence.

It’s about starting exactly where you are.

In this episode, we explore:

  • Alexx’s personal health journey and how it led her to found Low Tox Life
  • The most impactful first steps for reducing toxin load for you and your dog
  • Why “start where you’re at” is the foundation of sustainable change
  • The emotional and mental toxins that often go overlooked
  • How to navigate the destabilisation that can happen when your worldview shifts
  • The surprising patterns Alexx has noticed after interviewing more than 450 health and wellbeing experts
  • How supporting your dog’s health can become a doorway into deeper self-awareness
  • Simple, practical, non-overwhelming changes you can make today

If this episode resonated, please share it with a fellow dog mama who’s craving a simpler, gentler, more conscious approach to supporting her and her dog’s wellbeing.

Breaking the Anti-Bacterial Spell: A New Way to Tend Our Homes & Our Dogs with Joe Flanagan13 déc. 202501:16:46

This episode is an invitation to rethink what “clean,” “healthy,” and “balanced” actually mean - for our dogs, our homes, and the wider living systems we’re part of.

I sit down with Joe Flanagan, founder of Ingenious Probiotics, whose journey into the world of beneficial bacteria began in the most unexpected place: temperature control and air quality. What unfolded from there is a story that reaches far beyond products or protocols. It’s about remembering a way of living that honours life instead of fighting it.

Together we explore the anti-bacterial paradigm so many of us were raised inside, and what really happens when we wipe life away… and the ways Mother Nature inevitably fills the vacuum we create.

We touch on:

🌿 Why bacteria aren’t the enemy, and how they actually support balance on every level
🐾 Dogs as our early warning system (the “canaries in the coal mine” of our modern environment)
🏡 Viewing the home as a living ecosystem, not a battlefield
🧴 The quiet harm of chemical cleaning products and the pressure to sterilise everything
💧 How probiotic cleaning supports harmony, not domination
✨ Why animal lovers are often the ones leading the ecological shift
🌍 Wholeness as a practice

💗 Making choices from love rather than fear, for ourselves and our dogs

What Joe shares isn’t about buying another thing. It’s about a deeper remembering:
*that nature is not something to overpower,
*that our homes are living systems,
*and that our dogs are guiding us toward a more life-affirming way of being.

If you’re longing for a gentler, wiser, more connected approach to health - for yourself, your home, and your dog - this episode is for you!

F.E.T.C.H. First Friday: A Winter Reflection for You and Your Dog05 déc. 202500:14:54

In this final FETCH First Friday of the year, I’m coming to you solo with a gentle winter reflection for you and your dog.

There are some exciting developments unfolding behind the scenes, and even though I’m here alone this month, I’ll be sharing more with you soon.

Inside this episode:

• Winter as a Sacred PauseWhy the darker months call us to slow down, rest, and tend to our inner roots, and how our dogs naturally model this seasonal wisdom.

• The Water Element + Kidney Support (TCM) Simple ways to nourish the water element in both you and your dog, including warming foods, broths, lifestyle shifts, and energetic themes of the season.

• A Season of ReleaseAs we move from a 9 year into a 1 year (and toward the Year of the Horse in February), this is a natural time to acknowledge what we’ve shed, and what we’re still ready to let go of with gratitude.

• Not “New Year, New You”Why I follow the seasonal wheel instead of rushing into resolutions, and how January can become a month of deep rest, clarity, and seed-planting.

This episode is an invitation to enter winter with softness, presence, and trust — in yourself, your dog, and the slow magic working beneath the surface.

We explore how connection is our birthright, why your dog is walking beside you on your unique spiritual path, and how every being in your life carries its own medicine.

Together, we dive into intuition, ceremony, meaning-making, and practical ways to open the door to the more-than-human world — without cultural appropriation and without getting lost in rules.

If you’ve ever wondered how to deepen your spiritual relationship with your dog, the land, or the beings you meet along the way, this is your permission slip.

Topics We Explore:

  • What “empowered spirituality” really means
  • Why our dogs walk with us on our personal spiritual paths
  • Rethinking power animals, spirit animals, and soul dogs
  • How to honour your own ancestry and lived experience

Re-Membering Kinship: Wild Rhythms, Dogs & the More-Than-Human with Deb Matlock22 nov. 202501:05:32

In this episode, Deb Matlock, a professional nature-based spiritual life coach and a nature connection practitioner and educator for more than 25 years, and I explore what it means to live in deeper relationship with the more-than-human world. We talk about wild rhythms, junction points, and the moment we’re living in - a moment when old systems are falling away and new forms of kinship are calling us forward.

Deb shares how her childhood bond with her dog Jenny, and a lifetime of connection with animals and the outdoors, led her into environmental education, life coaching, and nature-based work. Together, we look at kinship as re-membering - bringing the members back into a world shaped by extractive models - and what shifts when we understand “community” as all beings, not just humans.

We explore communication with other species, reimagining ceremony, and creating the kind of inner spaciousness where wisdom can land. We sit with the hard, beautiful questions too: What does it mean to be human among so many beings? Why are our particular dogs with us? How do we bring our wild soul forward and be of service to the highest good each day?

We also touch on how AI might offer new perspectives on interdependence - and how empathy, when allowed to lead, changes everything.

This episode is an invitation to remember that there is no real disconnection, only the perception of it - and that every relationship, especially the one with our dogs, can guide us back into the wild web we’re already part of.

Samhain, Story & the Spiritual Dog: Reconnecting with the Magic of Irish Mythology with Jen Murphy15 nov. 202501:08:26

What if the stories of our ancestors are still shaping us - and still shaping the dogs who walk beside us?

In this Samhain-timed episode of Mystic Dog Mama, I sit down with Irish mythologist and anthropologist Jen Murphy, founder of The Celtic Creatives. Rooted in her grandmother’s storytelling and decades of study in Celtic mythology, anthropology, and Jungian psychology, Jen helps people remember their shining soul by bringing ancient wisdom into modern life.

Together, we explore:

🌑 What it means to be a modern mystic
🔥 How Irish myth and folklore reconnect us to our roots
🍂 Samhain and the Celtic Wheel of the Year - and why this season matters
✨ Simple, meaningful ways to honour the seasons in everyday life
🐾 The mythic role of the hound and how dogs guide us spiritually
🌙 Dreamwork, archetypes, and living with a story that supports your soul
💚 Re-centring the sacred in the ordinary

This conversation is rich, warm, and rooted in belonging - a perfect listen as the veil thins and we turn inward with our dogs curled at our feet. 🐕✨

Jen Murphy is an Irish mythologist, anthropologist and founder of The Celtic Creatives. A Dubliner born and bred, from the time she could talk, Jen's grandmother Frances O'Sullivan filled her ears with tales from Irish myth and folklore, fuelling a now 40-year fascination with the stories of her lineage. Jen's apprenticeship to following her soul's breadcrumbs has guided her formal studies in Medieval Irish and Celtic Studies, Anthropology, and Jungian Psychology. Jen supports people to remember that they have a shining soul, to dream Celtic spirituality into their modern lives by making the Celtic soul a living aesthetic—centring the soul in the everyday experience of life—through mythwork, dreamwork, and the body.

Sometimes the best way to understand F.E.T.C.H. is to see it in action.

In this F.E.T.C.H. First Friday episode, we wanted to show you what F.E.T.C.H. looks like in real life - beyond theory.

We sit down to look at our lovely Learn F.E.T.C.H. members, Sarah’s dog, Jess, a 13-year-old Rottweiler rescue who’s navigating arthritis and ongoing gut issues. You’ll hear how Jess’s guardian, Sarah, is already supporting her beautifully, what adjustments could help as the weather cools, and how to think about seasonal nourishment for older dogs in a way that’s practical, compassionate, and deeply attuned.

This conversation is an invitation to slow down, observe, and meet your dog right where they are body, mind, and soul.

In this episode:

  • How to warm and nourish an aging body in colder months
  • Filling the gaps in a homemade diet

Beyond the Bath: The Sacred Role of Your Groomer in Your Dog's Health, with Liz Hampton25 oct. 202501:10:08

What if grooming was actually one of the most intimate and insightful forms of care your dog receives?

In this episode, I’m joined by Liz Hampton, Master Groomer and Director of Grooming and Education at Fluffology in North Hollywood, California. Liz has spent over three decades redefining what grooming can be. She is part of a growing movement to raise the standards of education in an unregulated industry -  and to remind us that a good groomer isn’t just about style, but about whole-being care.

We talk about:
💫 The deep relationship you can build with your groomer as an essential part of your dog’s healthcare team
👁️ What groomers can notice about your dog’s health and behaviour that you or even your vet might miss
🌬️ How your energy influences your dog’s experience at the groomer
🧠 How to choose the right groomer — and the questions to ask
🐕 The importance of nail care, regular maintenance, and how small changes can have big effects on your dog’s comfort and mobility

Beyond "Complete and Balanced": Fear, Trust & the Alchemy of Real Food, with Lee Georgina18 oct. 202501:21:38

What if our obsession with “complete and balanced” feeding isn’t really about our dogs at all… but about our fear of losing them?

In this rich, honest conversation with Georgina of Georgina’s Kitchen, we unpack the deeper story beneath the formulas - the way fear, control, and love can all blur together when we just want to do right by our dogs.

Georgina shares how her own journey began when her dog started having seizures at just three years old - a moment that led her to question everything she’d been told about nutrition. Her curiosity opened a door to independent research, including a small but eye-opening study testing zinc levels in local beef liver samples that completely changed her understanding of “balance.”

Together, we explore what it really means for a dog to thrive - not through micromanaging numbers, but through trust, intuition, and food as a living, intelligent force.

We talk about:

  • Why “complete and balanced” guidelines were never meant to define thriving — and how they became a tool of fear-based marketing.
  • What Georgina’s zinc testing revealed about the wild variation in natural foods, and why that’s not a flaw but a sign of life.
  • The quiet freedom that comes when we loosen our grip on control and let nature take the lead.
  • What street dogs in India can teach us about adaptability, intuition, and the power of relationship with place.
  • The growing push toward vegan diets for dogs, and why honouring individuality matters more than ideology.
  • How we can support balance across seasons, climates, and energies - without falling into “just in case” or “more is better.”
  • The difference between food-based and nutrient-based thinking, and why one nourishes the whole being while the other fragments it.

This is a conversation for anyone who’s ever felt overwhelmed by information, scared of getting it wrong, or tangled in the pressure to be the “perfect” dog guardian. It’s a reminder that the goal isn’t control - it’s connection.

When we feed from trust instead of fear, food relationship, and magic.
