Sophie Lloyd is a DJ and producer from the UK. A staple of Defected Records and associated labels and promotions, this year she was invited to dig through the archives of London Records which resulted in standout EP 'London Revisited' - remixes of classics and deep cuts from the storied label.

We discuss all that of course, and also her journey from DJing at house parties, corporate events and eventually clubs and festivals, and getting into the world of production.

Nathan Fake is a producer and live performer from the UK. He has released albums on Border Community, Ninja Tune, via his own channels, and most recently through French label InFiné.

That latest album, Evaporator, is discussed during the conversation, as well as his wider journey through production processes and methods of work. We discover which ancient version of Cubase is still his go-to DAW, and which synths and other studio objects are most often used in his tracks.

We also talk about his live set, which by his own admission is actually pretty good.

This is a good one with a guest we've wanted to have on for ages. Get involved!

Jend is a producer and DJ who has built an impressive following on streaming platforms and social media using a very interesting set of strategies adapting from his time in drop shipping. So we are getting deep into the weeds of digital music marketing on this week's podcast, and while it gets a bit technical in places this is a really interesting conversation from the perspective of building an audience completely independently in a way that just wasn't possible before the digital model.

He offers a version of his strategy via his Intellijend platform, which automates many of the processes and makes the whole thing a lot more manageable for the typical expert DAW technician who has never opened Facebook ad manager.

We talk about how he came up with these approaches to music marketing and how to implement them, building them into a product for other artists to use, and also the necessity for music to live in the real world and different ways to achieve this in a similar DIY way.

This is the antidote to moaning about Spotify and telling people to buy CDs... get involved!

On the podcast this week...

What you need to do to become a DJ in 2026. I mean a good DJ.

Why you should learn to beat match, preferably on vinyl.

Why you should learn to use Ableton.

Why you should take digital marketing seriously.

Why you should respect the worst aspects of the industry.

This is not an exhaustive study, but it does contain some pretty good pointers.

#50: Dance Music Deserves To Be Destroyed By AI01 Jul 202600:53:31

No, really it does.

In this episode we discuss a series of articles recommended by friend-of-the-show Darren Hemmings in this substack post.

As the title suggests, we consider the ethics of AI music from two separate angles.

And finally we look at the increasing dominance of standup comedy in the ecosystem of live events.

I will never stand being accused of cynical ragebait!

The bulk of this episode is a deep dive on the Live Nation / Ticketmaster situation.

We look at the system of practices that has developed since the merger in 2010, the recent ruling, and the possible future arrangements in a world where the ruling (currently subject to appeal) is put into practice.

But separately, we also discuss why the Chaotic Good marketing approach is actually a good thing for music...!

This week on Music Not Diving we decouple from the Youtube feed and get into the ongoing debate around AI. Sceptics like Ed Zitron have come to prominence with their doubts about the viability of business models of the big AI firms, but in music Suno is busily destroying artistry and the effect of the general LLMs has upended other bits of the industry too.

So what does this all mean?

And we also learn about the ceiling of the Rolls Royce Phantom and what that might mean for vintage mix consoles.

Music Not Diving touched down in Bengaluru, aka Bangalore, for the opening night of DJ El Sid's Ends & Means party, and also to record podcasts at the Bangalore International Centre with two of the most important people in the contemporary techno scene in India. This is part II...

Sanil Sudan, aka FILM, is one of the best electronic producers to come out of India. Based in New Delhi, he has been involved in all aspects of the scene over the past decade and more: DJing, promoting parties, running one of India’s first booking agencies (UnMute), as well as making beats as FILM and other aliases including the techno-focused Tyrell Dub Corp. '

We discuss his production process, differing approaches to studio techniques including classic synths and sampling, hidden resources to be found on Youtube, the challenges facing Indian producers, the development of a distinctive Indian sound, as well as his time spent in Berlin as part of the Border Movement Residency (BMR) program.

This is a great conversation with a big talent operating in a difficult environment. Get involved!

Kohra is a key figure in the modern iteration of techno in India. His label, Qilla Records, has been one of the most important outposts for Indian producers since 2011. And as a DJ, he has established himself as a similarly important voice across clubs and festivals both in India and on the global circuit. He's also a very interesting guy with a lot to say on the state of the scene right now, and also the history.

We discuss the scene in India compared to Europe and the US, the development of techno culture in India, the advance of western dance music brands into Asia, today's challenges in running labels, and his history in different areas of music.

This conversation is a great insight into the workings of the scene in India... get involved!

Part II will air next week.

Slipmatt is one of the most important DJs in the history of dance music. From his first major gig at Raindance in 1989, he came to be known as the Godfather Of Hardcore, becoming synonymous with the genre that typified the UK rave sound in the early 90s. His 'SL2' project, with DJ Lime, yield two top-ten hits including the genre-defining 'On A Ragga Tip' that reached number 2 in the UK singes chart in May 1992.

He was also instrumental in emergence Jungle from the Hardcore scene, and produced classics including 'Hear Me' which typify the linearity between the two genres.

We discuss the pre-acid house period, the game-changing nature of the rave explosion both in music and society, and we get into his personal journey from bedroom producer to Top Of The Pops.

#39 Recondite: the art and culture of dance music, and can AI produce groundbreaking music?04 Feb 202601:21:07

Recondite is one of our favourite guests and here we welcome him for his third appearance on the podcast.

We discuss his recent performances at arguably the world's hottest music venue - the Sphere in Las Vegas, and also the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt. And we get the inside story on what's going on in melodic techno, an area of dance music that has attracted some of the biggest audiences while being largely ignored by the press.

The issue of dance music and popular culture as art is also discussed in detail, as well as the continuing developments in AI in music - both in ethical terms and in the practice of making music.

Bugged Out is one of the UK's best-loved and most enduring club brands. From humble beginnings in Manchester, through Sankeys, Cream in Liverpool, fabric and The End in London, right the way through to their enormous 30th birthday at the 15k capacity Drumsheds in London, this is a promotion that has consistently done things right in terms of the music and the vibe.

Johnno Burgess is one of the co-founders, and also the former editor of the legendary Jockey Slut magazine which originally launched the night that became Bugged Out.

We discuss the history of the event with its many successes and occasional failures, the changing landscape over the last 30 years, how they booked Daft Punk for free, and we also get into the golden era of the dance press and how it looks in the current era.

This is a great conversation with a relatively unsung hero of UK dance culture. Get involved!

The Sabres Of Paradise were formed in 1992 by Andrew Weatherall, Gary Burns, and our guest on today's episode Jagz Kooner. They burned brightly but briefly, initially disbanding in 1995, but have now reformed (without the late Weatherall) for what Jagz says will be a limited time.

We discuss the story of the Sabres, but also Jagz' wider career which covers a lot of ground as a remixer and producer. And we also get into his thoughts on today's scene, and the changes in music making he's witnessed in four decades making tunes.

This is a re-up of a podcast we released in mid-2023 which sought to set the table for what was then the coming debate on AI in music and the wider socio-economic world.

It's worth returning to because it covers the big issues that I anticipate will be covered on the podcast this coming year, and takes a look at some of the initial intuitions coming into this highly weird period of human history.

This stuff isn't going anywhere, and it poses serious questions for what the music industry is for. What are musicians doing making music in this environment? What's the purpose of music in of itself?

These are questions I have been asking myself over the last few weeks, and there are no easy answers...

Sam Binga is a DJ & Producer from Bristol, UK.

Having first emerged in the breaks scene of the early 2000s, in the 2010s he placed himself firmly at the centre of UK bass, with releases on 50 Weapons, Exit and Critical. His sound spans the anthemic rowdiness of tracks like ‘AYO’ and ‘Lef Dem’, to the deeper explorations of his collaborations with Om Unit. He also runs Pineapple Records, a crucial label in the patchwork of soundsystem-adjacent UK electronic music.

We discuss the state of the current UK scene, his history through various areas of the UK bass scene, forthcoming music on Pineapple, and a lot more.

Guy Brewer, aka Shifted, aka half of Commix, aka Carrier, made an appearance on our previous incarnation, the Not A Diving Podcast, a couple of years ago that was very popular. He returns with a new alias but a similar selection of wise takes on the electronic music scene and the challenges facing everyone trying to operate in it.

We discuss the new Carrier album, Rhythm Immortal, the challenge of genre expectations, the disappearing middle class of musicians, the (ir)relevance of record labels, and much more besides.

This is a good one!

The first of four conversations recorded at ADE last week.

Joris Voorn is a key figure in Dutch house and techno, and actually the genre as a whole.

Releasing albums since 2004, he's been a fixture on the biggest stages for basically the entirety of the intervening period, and carved out a distinctive sound without ever pandering to the fashions of the day.

He's also thoroughly nice chap who talks very well about the music and culture that surrounds it.

Stay tuned for the other three conversations coming over the course of the next couple of weeks.

A boycott is the end of a conversation, not the start.

On Music Not Diving this week, we discuss whether Spotify is such an exceptional case of evil that it deserves be made an example of, or whether there might be another platform, for instance one owned by a Communist dictatorship, which might better fit the bill.

And we give thanks to Cory Doctorow for his theoretical underpinning to the episode, which also features in the title!

Paul Ćinske is the man behind every single booking at the most important club in the history of techno (maybe)... Tresor.

We discuss the current state of the Berlin scene, the changes since the trauma of the pandemic, his role at the venue in detail, the importance of one person steering the creative ship of a club like Tresor... and much else besides.

We haven't had anything quite like this on the show before, and Paul does not disappoint!

Returning guest Darren Hemmings is a music marketing expert and the founder of a creative marketing agency specialising in music called Motive Unknown.

He's also the author of the excellent Network Notes Substack.

How do you break through in 2025? How do you even get your music heard? These problems are as pertinent for acts signed to big labels as it is for people just starting out.

Is streaming a problem? And what is the role of labels today? We address all these things and much more besides in a vital conversation for anyone with even a passing interest in music, the industry, and the development of culture in today’s big tech- dominated world.

This is a great conversation with a returning guest who will definitely be on the show again!

#019 El Hornet on influencing Skrillex, Glasto with Beyoncé, and the new Pendulum album09 Sep 202501:14:35

Pendulum are the biggest Drum n Bass act of all time. A controversial statement perhaps but one that ChatGPT agrees with.

El Hornet is the band's DJ, a member since day 1 of Pendulum in Perth, Australia, and a man who has been on every step of the journey along with Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen.

They have a new album out called Inertia, and it's their first one since 2010. It's both very modern and very recognisable as a Pendulum record, which might say as much about their wider influence on dance music as anything else.

We discuss the scene in 90s Perth, playing in punk bands, moving to the UK in 2003, taking over the scene and ultimately outgrowing it. Oh and playing before Beyoncé at Glastonbury.

Some mad stuff in this one - you're gonna enjoy it!

We are finally back with a brand new episode!

Kelly Lee Owens is one of the most notable UK electronic musicians to emerge over the last decade. An album artist, she released her first LP back in 2017 and the most recent, Dreamstate was released on dh2 in 2024.

We discuss her past as a Taekwondo black belt, experiences with the supernatural, making music without knowledge of theory, the mechanics of releasing music today, as well as the challenges facing musicians and the scene more widely.

This is a good one!

Skream was the poster boy for the early dubstep scene, then made the charts as part of Magnetic Man, and since then forged a unique path through different areas of dance music while always maintaining the personality that made him a star in the first place.

This conversation was first broadcast in September 2023, episode 85 of our previous incarnation, the Not A Diving Podcast. And more people have listened to it than any of our other 200-odd episodes.

We discuss what the very early years of dubstep were really like, and what happened when the Americans got involved. What it was like being marketed as an old fashioned rock n roll hellraiser, the fun that was had and the pressure that came with it. And we get into how the music and the scene has changed along the way.

This is a great chat with a legend of UK music - worth a re-spin even if you listened the first time round, and absolutely essential listening if you missed it!

Stuart McMillan is half of Slam, one of the most important UK techno acts in history and absolute key players in the world of Scottish electronic music.

The new Slam album, Dark Channel is out now on their own Soma imprint - one of the most important UK techno labels and a conversation in itself.

We discuss the story of Slam from the mid 80s onwards, traversing the Acid House experience in Glasgow into the 90s rave era and beyond. We talk about Daft Punk releasing their early singles on Soma and the history of the label more generally. And we discuss the modern techno scene in Scotland and across the world.

Another point of conversation is the 2018 Slam album Athenaeum 101 - a really great piece of work which very much deserves another look and listen.

Scotland has been criminally neglected on the podcast up til now so this is a great way to start addressing the balance!

#016 Psychotherapist on mental health, creativity, and whether geniuses are all mad: Denise Devenish08 Jul 202501:16:18

Denise Devenish is a psychotherapist who specialises in treating musicians, offering a specialist service for those working in music and the creative industries.

She describes herself as having grown up "in a family steeped in the music business and having been surrounded by musicians and industry folk my whole life" and having "witnessed first hand the unique highs and lows that working in the industry entails."

So of course this is an interesting person to talk to!

We discuss the extent of the mental health crisis in the creative industries (as well as the wider economy), the differences in the younger generation and their attitudes to drug and alcohol, the "art comes from pain" and "genius requires madness" tropes, and the changes that digital music has brought to participants in the industry.

The book we refer to is Can Music Make You Sick? by Sally Anne Gross and George Musgrave (aka Context). A key input into that is Jodi Dean's Communucative Capitalism (2005), which I also recommend.

This a really interesting discussion of some pertinent issues!

This is easily in my top 3 favourite episodes of the 170-odd we've done. The sound of it was originally pretty terrible though, it was a constant battle in the early days of the podcast to get people recording in good spaces.

Luckily we kept most of the individual mic channels and the software has come on leaps and bounds recently, so it's now very easy to convert a very roomy mic recording into something that sounds like it was done in a proper radio studio.

Steve Davis was one of the very biggest sporting celebrities in the 1980s. He totally dominated the sport of snooker in Tiger Woods-like fashion, winning the world title six times and setting unprecedented levels of excellence in front of enormous television audiences. The 18m who tuned in on BBC2 to watch him lose the 1985 final on the final ball of the final frame, well after midnight, is still a record.

But he's also a major music head, DJ and modular synth-playing member of experimental group The Utopia Strong, who has always been a very interesting character. The Utopia Strong releases since we first broadcast this conversation two years ago are... well, strong, especially the BBC Sessions release which was recorded in a live session at the legendary Maida Vale studios.

And he's also Eddie Hearn's Godfather.

So we talk about all of the above, but perhaps most interestingly the experience of fame at that level and how to cope with it. Having a really top manager helps, we discover.

This is well worth a re-listen if you caught it first time round, and if you didn't - well, you're in for a treat.

James Holden is a highly respected electronic musician from the UK. He first broke through in the late 90s with his trance-crossover anthem 'Horizons', and quickly became established as an expert producer and DJ. Following his first album 'The Idiots Are Winning', released like almost all of his music on his own label Border Community label, his sound has evolved in expansive and unexpected ways, culminating in 2023's 'Imagine This Is a High Dimensional Space of All Possibilities' and most recently 'The Universe Will Take Care Of You' with Waclaw Zimpel.

We discuss his changing approaches to making recording and performing, his relationship with nightclubs and DJ culture, the specifics of making his most recent albums, and the nature of music as art.

We also attempt to get him to dish the dirt on big name DJs but he turns out to be the model of discretion!

This is a good one, stick it on, and then listen to his recent catalogue - it's truly amazing work.
