El profesor García es un etnomusicólogo que ha estudiado la música negra y la música latina de los Estados Unidos, con un enfoque teórico en la raza y el racismo, y que ocupa la Cátedra Distinguida Robin March Hanes en el Departamento de Música de la Universidad de Carolina del Norte en Chapel Hill. El profesor García es autor del libro “Arsenio Rodríguez and the Transnational Flows of Latin Popular Music”.

What's up Mix(ed)tape listeners! Welcome to Single 18: Para Bailar El Montuno, which contains an extended interview with professor David García.

Professor García is an ethnomusicologist who has studied black music and Latin music of the United States, with a theoretical focus on race and racism, and who holds the Robin March Hanes Distinguished Professorship in the Music Department at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill @uncmusic. He's the author of the book "Arsenio Rodríguez and the Transnational Flows of Latin Popular Music".

This conversation complements Were You Listening? Track 27, devoted to the song Bruca Maniguá.

Entonces qué queridos oyentes del Mix(ed)tape podcast! Ya sé, ha pasado un montón de tiempo desde nuestro último episodio, pero créanme, tenía que resolver unas cosas. Pero aquí estamos de vuelta y hoy estaremos escuchando la canción Salsa & Choke de ChocQuibTown. En Salsa & Choke ChocQuibTown celebra un ritmo diferente llamado Salsa Choke. El coro nos revela una referencia histórica. La salsa y el choke, las influencias principales de la salsa choke, son ritmos diferentes. El choke uno podría decir que se parece más al reggaetón. Ambos ritmos son escuchados comúnmente en la ciudad de Tumaco, una ciudad al sur de la costa pacífica colombiana cuya población es 85% afrocolombiana de acuerdo con el censo de 2023. Se dice que las primeras fusiones de salsa con choke que crearon la salsa choke sucedieron allí a mediados de los 2000.

Hola Mix(ed)tape listeners! I know, it's been a while.... but believe, I just had some things to sort out. Today we'll be listening to Salsa & Choke by ChocQuibTown. While ChocQuibTown is a hip-hop band, in today’s song they celebrate a different rhythm called Salsa Choke. The chorus of the song reveals a historical reference, Salsa and Choke are separate rhythms and are the main influences of Salsa Choke. The latter, choke, is closer to something like regueton. Both rhythms were common in the town of Tumaco, a southern town in the Pacific Coast of Colombia, whose population is estimated to be 85% Afro-Colombian as of 2023. The first fusions of salsa and choke that created salsa choke are said to have happened there in the mid 2000s.

Hi Mix(ed)tape listeners! Today we join Joe Arroyo to say "I want her black!" Using the direct message of this hidden gem of a song we celebrate the possibility of having a black woman as the next president of the United States and we exchange impressions regarding what it means for that role to be fulfilled by Kamala Harris. The beautiful song that serves as the framework for our musings in track 7 of Were You Listening?  is the song La Quiero Negra by Joe Arroyo.

The wonderful women who share their opinions with us, their hope and their skepticism, are our dear friends Kimberly Nicole, Stephanie Watkins, Courtney Feliz, Nicole Ahima, and Serena Spears. Kimberly is a corporate communications professional in the tech industry, a professional Kizomba and semba dancer with many years of experience, and the director of Kizomba RDU Dance Company. Stephanie is a proud Afro-Latina, and passionate advocate for affordable housing and equitable community development; during the day she works as the Director of Housing Policy at the North Carolina Housing Coalition, during the night, she is a seasoned social dancer and member of the dance company Mambo Dinámico. Nicole is an incredible salsera and dance instructor with many years of experience and she is the director of Nashville Salsa Dancing. Courtney is a seasoned social dancer and an assistant director for the North Carolina Brazilian Arts Project. Serena es una consultora corporativa de pensiones y una bailadora profesional y maestra con experiencia en varios estilos de movimiento  afrodiaspórico, nativo, y occidental.a corporate pension consultant as well as a professional dancer and teacher with experience in many Afro-diasporic, indigenous, and Western styles of movement.

¡!Esto. Te Pone. La Cabeza. Mala!! Hola queridos oyentes de Mix(ed)tape! En el track 5 de Were You Listening? analizamos la canción Esto Te Pone La Cabeza Mala de Juan Formell y Los Van Van.

Dos maravillosas practicantes de bailes populares cubanos nos ayudan a contextualizar esta canción: Oesa y Cokie. Ellas son dos de las fundadoras de Palenke Cuban Dance. Durante su tiempo en el Barnard College, Oesa desarrolló un amor por el baile afro cubano, especialmente a través de sus estudios con su mentora Rebecca Bliss. Cokie es DJ y bailadora, ella descubrió la música y el baile cubanos cuando estudió un tiempo en la Habana, Cuba, como parte de su pregrado en la universidad de Vanderbilt, y bajo la tutoría del profesor William Luis.

En "Esto Te Pone La Cabeza Mala" Juan Formell nos presenta un ejemplo nítido del enfoque con el que él y  Los Van Van crean música: fusionando, mezclando, y creando polirítmia, una muestra maravillosa de la timba cubana.

This messes you up in the head! Hi Mix(ed)tape listeners! In track 5 of Were You Listening?  we analyze the song Esto Te Pone La Cabeza Mala by Juan Formell y Los Van Van.

Two wonderful practitioners of Cuban popular dances help us contextualize this song: Oesa and Cokie. They are two of the founders of Palenke Cuban Dance. During her time at Barnard College, Oesa developed a love for Afro-Cuban dance especially as she studied with her mentor, Rebecca Bliss. Cokie is a DJ and dancer who discovered Cuban music and dance while studying in Habana, Cuba, as part of her undergraduate degree at Vanderbilt University and working under Professor William Luis.

In "Esto Te Pone La Cabeza Mala" Juan Formell presents a prime example of the approach with which he and Los Van Van create music: by fusing, mixing and creating a multitude of rhythms, an outstanding example of Cuban timba.
