The Skill of ACCEPTANCE and why it is SO important to develop – Karl Morris #31207 Jun 202400:24:20

The Skill of ACCEPTANCE and why it is SO important to develop – Karl Morris

Why you will always fall short of your true capability without this skill

Thanks for joining me on today’s Brain Booster which is a solo run from me. I wanted to take the opportunity to bring together some of the key concepts from the previous months and some of the recent guests.

Are you going to take ACTION and become a Certified Mind Factor coach?

At the heart of so much of what we have been discussing is the SKILL of acceptance.

If we are not willing to be ok with the variability of potential outcomes the game can throw at us then we will always be at less than our best.

Acceptance is NOT resignation. We are not trying to pretend to be happy after a bad shot or a missed putt but we ARE willing to deal with the reality and move on

So many people are sold the idea that this swing fix or this ‘secret’ will PROTECT them from a poor outcome yet in reality NOTHING will ever protect us from the need to develop a robust relationship to undesired outcomes

  • Acceptance is an ongoing set of skills that requires a diligent and consistent approach
  • Today I will share with you the building blocks of acceptance
  • Skills that have helped many players at all levels to ACCESS their current skills
  • Why the skill acceptance begins well before the round starts
  • Why ‘contamination’ of your shots is such an issue
  • The value of journaling
  • Why making a commitment to develop acceptance is so important
  • What acceptance does to your physiology
  • Why the expression of your technical skill is dependent on your acceptance skills
  • An opportunity for you to really bring together and clarify some of the key Brain Booster concepts of the previous few months
  • HOW you can actually take action and release more of your capabilities ....Enjoy!

Mike is the CEO of the highly renowned clothing brand FENIX

I met Mike recently at the PGA Conference in Thailand

He was one of the main speakers and what he had to say had the whole audience in the palm of his hand.

He gave a very emotional description as you will hear today about how he managed to build his business despite tremendous personal and social challenges.

Issues with his own health and then a global pandemic that tragically took the life of one of his extremely valuable team members.

  • Mike’s story is one of resilience and determination
  • He was a very promising young player in the north of Scotland
  • Went to America on a scholarship but struggled to make the progress he wanted
  • Eventually turned his attention to business and began a journey of self discovery
  • The journey to South east Asia
  • We talked about what it takes on a day to day basis to ‘stay on the path’
  • The importance of valuing other people
  • Building a great team ethos around you
  • Having clarity of PURPOSE

Listening to Mike you will be inspired to get clarity on your own purpose and what it takes to succeed in the tough world of business

How to find success without losing yourself – Simon Mundie #30917 May 202400:50:23

On today’s show we have former BBC sports presenter Simon Mundie who has recently released a tremendous book called ‘How to find success without losing yourself’

Download Mind Caddie for hundreds of short audio lessons and exercises produced by Karl and start improving your mental game the same way as six major champions:

Download Mind Caddie Here

Simon has spent many years interviewing and being around some of the greatest names in sport.

People who have achieved what others may think as being the ‘ultimate’ experience

Yet often he detected there was an underlying dissatisfaction

Champion Thinking is a counter to the ‘success evangelism’ that is so prevalent.

Typically, we think we’ll be happy when X happens (the job, house, relationship, World Cup win, Olympic gold medal). However, frequently people reach the top of their success Everest and feel underwhelmed or even empty.

But the experience of flow is inherently enjoyable. Why is that? Because as thoughts about past and future drop away, so does our identity and sense of self. And we love it when that happens! The trophy is just a symbol of that moment. That’s why we love losing ourselves – in sport, music, conversation, books, dance – the portals are vast.

While we think we want to become a ‘somebody’, we are happiest when we experience being ‘nobody’. On that level, we are always at peace, whole and fulfilled. The trick then is to embody this recognition, even when we are not 'in flow', and this book can show you how.

This is a great conversation exploring some of the deeper topics around our experience.

  • What is ‘non duality’?
  • How can we incorporate this in our everyday life?
  • What is the difference between our ‘thinking mind’ and our ‘observing mind’?
  • How to create some separation from our thoughts so we don’t get so caught up in the content of our thinking
  • What are the best way to set goals?
  • What does make us truly happy?
  • A really thought provoking session from someone who has been able to see through the illusion of ‘I will be happy when”

Jim has had a BIG input on players who listen to the show and I wanted to get him back to talk at more length about a subject that is unfortunately very relevant to a LOT of golfers the YIPS.

Why does New Zealand punch above its weight in terms of producing great sports men and women?

The influence of the ALL BLACKS

It was a very open conversation about his own struggles as a player and some of the deep thinking he has done about what actually makes a difference to players who want to make the very best out of their development

Why context is so important and how the brain responds differently depending on the environment you are in

  • The limitations of data taken out of context
  • The need for curiosity and exploration
  • Why your IDENTITY as a golfer is so important and will influence everything you do
  • Being clear WHO you are
  • What have been your influences?
  • What about your ancestry?
  • Your culture?
  • Can you see golf as an opportunity to explore?

Raymond and I collaborated on what we believe to be a ground breaking project called ‘Building Stable Confidence’

It is a program that has had wonderful reviews and could be a wonderful assistance this year to help you get the best from your game.

During the webinar we discussed the key concept of

‘Separating SELF from CRAFT’

How can we develop the capability to create some space between our capability as a golfer and our self image as a human being

How being ‘concerned’ about our value as a human is tied to our evolutionary development

The early messages we receive as youngsters from important people around us and how this can weave into our identity

  • The need to develop a ‘SAFE PLACE’ to play from
  • How our performance can become a THREAT to our identity
  • How this leads to unstable confidence
  • Why your relationship to the game can become so toxic

The necessity to ask yourself the question ‘Why do I play golf?’ Not to take your initial answer but to look deeper to what is REALLY important to you

  • What are your INTRINSIC and SELF DIRECTED values to play the game?
  • Challenging your core BELIEFS to see if they REALLY work for you
  • The fragility of EXTRINSIC values and why you can never ‘get enough’
  • The need to JOURNAL your experiences and why that is so important
  • What am I committed to TODAY?
  • Think about WHY you play golf WHEN you play golf
  • Being INTENTIONAL and on purpose

This is a wonderful session with Raymond and Karl as they go into some real detail as to how to get the very best from your game

How Being Mindless affects EVERYTHING we do – Dr Ellen Langer #30329 Mar 202401:02:41

Today on the Brain Booster we are joined by an extraordinarily special guest Dr Ellen Langer

Dr Langer has been one of the most influential people in the world of psychology over the past 40 years

She was the first female tenured professor in psychology at Harvard

Has written numerous books

She has conducted so many incredible experiments, most notably the ‘counterclockwise’ experiment where she had older men go into a ‘pod’ that took them back to their younger selves.

The results as we find out today were extraordinary

She has been studying Mindfulness for the past 35 years and makes clear that mindfulness is NOT meditation

Mindfulness is being aware of what is ACTUALLY happening as opposed to what we think is happening based on our auto pilot responses

  • Why we need to realise that we DON’T know
  • How our assumptions keep constantly tricking us
  • How research only gives us PROBABILITIES not absolutes
  • The ‘counterclockwise’ study and the amazing possibilities that open up
  • Is ageing a direct consequence of our beliefs surrounding what we believe SHOULD be happening?
  • Can we think ourselves WELL?
  • Can we think ourselves SICK?
  • What living a mindful life looks like

  • A quiet mind that is FULLY PRESENT
  • A KNOWING that cannot be explained
  • How to access true WISDOM
  • How the intellect creates tension and upset

Are you going to join us on YOUR path to Mastery?

The Lost Art of Golf 2 day school at Archerfield Links with Karl Morris and Gary Nicol

The ULTIMATE interactive learning experience at the ULTIMATE location

Today a slightly different show with a solo effort from myself. I have had a few people ask me recently to clarify some of the key ideas from the Mind factor trainings so here we go.

What path are you ACTUALLY on?

Could you embark on a ‘path to mastery’ as opposed to being on a path of fear, anxiety and avoidance?

Become a Mind Factor Coach - Early Bird Offer

2024 Mind Factor Certification Course

  • What game are you ACTUALLY playing?
  • How is the game of golf occurring for you?
  • Are you allowing golf to be a judgement on your VALUE as a person?
  • Does the golf course appear as a threat or an opportunity?
  • How can you change your ‘story’? A story that is holding you back
  • What do you want to really experience with your game?
  • Understanding what TRUE GRATITUDE actually is
  • Why gratitude is a PERFORMANCE state

In this short session we explore some really important territory and ask some question that are not ordinarily asked of golfers.

Yet if we don’t ask these questions we will NEVER get to the real source of performance and perhaps more importantly what is holding that performance back.

How you can TRANSFORM your golfing experience – The Magic of understanding the ‘90%’ – Jim Waldron #29419 Jan 202400:50:56

The Lost Art of Golf 2 day school at Archerfield Links with Karl Morris and Gary Nicol

He has an incredible background in his coaching development over many years looking into all areas of the Mind Body connection

2024 Mind Factor Certification Course

We discussed in great detail perhaps the most overlooked opportunity to improve your game.

The 90% of golf that isn’t golf!!

We spend so much of our golfing time NOT playing golf and yet how many golfers really look into what is happening during this time and HOW they can maximise their experience?

I have long contended that the quality of what you do in the 90% will have a DIRECT influence on what you do when it comes to play your shots.

We discussed:

  • The value of being EXTERNAL in between shots
  • Making a conscious decision to connect with the beauty of the golf course
  • Connecting and coming to your SENSES
  • The connection with the ‘Power of NOW’
  • Losing your absorption in your own SELF
  • Connecting with other people and how this can cross over into your life
  • Your behaviour in between shots and how this becomes totally unconscious
  • The pace of you walk and the ‘Mind Body’ connection
  • The danger of focusing too much on OUTCOMES

How tuning into your external world helps you LISTEN to the golf course. Being attuned to your ENVIRONMENT and then being able to RESPOND to that environment

  • The value of good conversation and being WIDE with your focus
  • The feeling of ‘lightness’ and how that can help you get into the shot
  • Moe Norman and ‘positive indifference’
  • Random reinforcement syndrome – what is it and why do we fall into its trap

It is such a pleasure to speak to Jim

He has such a wonderful INTENTION to help golfers

You can only benefit from is wonderful wisdom.

Then turned professional and began to take LOTS of lessons and receive so much information about what he was doing WRONG.

Things changed for Scott when he met Kendal McWade who has been on the podcast many times.

They started to explore a more instinctive way of playing the game

Adam has produced some wonderful material over the past few years including his wonderful book ‘The Practice Manual’

He has a tremendous ability to simplify what we need to pay attention to as golfers and how to get the absolute maximum from our practice time.

Download Mind Caddie for hundreds of short audio lessons and exercises produced by Karl and start improving your mental game the same way as six major champions:

Download Mind Caddie Here

How can we REALLY simplify the game to make significant progress?

We explore in great detail THE BIG THREE of impact and why they are so vital to your improvement

Virtually EVERY single shot you have hit in the past that you don’t like will have been affected by one of these three factors

  • Club Face Orientation
  • Strike Location
  • Ground Contact

Yet so often we then focus on almost everything else to try to find a solution.

Yet if you can stay with the BIG THREE you will be dealing with actual evidence from the scene of the crime IMPACT

Why are we trying to master the swing when it can NEVER be mastered?

Yet we can move in the direction of mastery with the BIG THREE

We can aim to have so much more fun in practice as we EXPLORE our capabilities around these areas.

  • Can you present the face slightly open?
  • Slightly closed?
  • Off the toe?
  • Off the heel?
  • Now you can find the middle
  • Now you can find SQUARE

We got to explore so many interesting avenues in this conversation and I believe it perfectly ties in with the Mental game Big Three of Intention, Attention and Attitude

Coaching winners on the PGA and DP World Tour – Liam James #28510 Nov 202301:14:11

Download Mind Caddie for hundreds of short audio lessons and exercises produced by Karl and start improving your mental game the same way as six major champions: https://mindcaddie.onelink.me/7xjx/znldwgbi

Already at a relatively young age Liam has coached numerous winners on tour such as Matt Wallace and Vincent Norrman. He also coached tour legend Lee Westwood for over two years.

We had chance to discuss his evolution and development as a coach working with great mentors such as Mac O’Grady, Robert Rock and Matt Belsham.

From an early age he has been fascinated by the art and science of both playing and coaching.

Often in his early days he would be playing tournaments with other young pros who he was actually coaching and we go into a great story how he transformed the fortunes of one young player during a 36 hole tournament they played together.

With his association with Robert Rock he gained an opportunity to coach top players and has never looked back since.

We discuss life on tour and both the opportunity and challenges of working at the highest level.

The conversation though doesn’t just apply to good players.

Whatever your standard of play you will gain something from this podcast.

The FOUR ‘types’ of coaching and what is MOST effective – Fred Shoemaker #28403 Nov 202301:08:07

Today we are joined on the Brain Booster by the biggest influence in my coaching career Fred Shoemaker.

Download Mind Caddie for hundreds of short audio lessons and exercises produced by Karl and start improving your mental game the same way as six major champions: https://mindcaddie.onelink.me/7xjx/znldwgbi

I first went out to Fred’s school in Carmel Valley, California over 25 years ago.

The experience had a deep and lasting impression on me and opened up a whole new world of enquiry and thought about the coaching process.

Fred has continued to influence many coaches and players with his ability to look at the game in a way that really gets you to think about what the game truly MEANS to you

What is your PURPOSE for playing the game?

What is really important to you about the experience?

In today’s show amongst many topics we managed to really drill down into the FOUR types of coaching.

The ‘DO’ instruction. The model for 90% of todays golf coaching whereby a teacher ‘tells’ you what to do in your swing based on his or her belief about how the golf swing SHOULD function

The ‘awareness’ instruction which is much more of a coaching based approach where a coach simply asks you to pay attention to what is ACTUALLY happening in your experience of swinging a club. This leads to a much stronger learning experience.

The BE instruction

This is where the coach helps you explore the PERSON you are when you swing the golf club. Are you going to play as a courageous golfer perhaps? At the heart of this instruction is your own COMMITMENT

The fourth type of instruction is to challenge HOW the world ‘occurs’ to you.

If the golf course occurs to you as a place of threat then no amount of the first two types of instruction will have much effect.

To understand how the world is occurring to you and the CHOICE you have in creating that narrative

This session is not for the faint hearted.

It is challenging

It will really make you consider your approach to the game

It is a wonderful conversation with a very special coach

Changing our Golfing Story  - Tim O’Connor #28327 Oct 202300:53:17

Today on the show we are joined by Performance Coach Tim O’Connor.

Download Mind Caddie for hundreds of short audio lessons and exercises produced by Karl and start improving your mental game the same way as six major champions: https://urlgeni.us/mindcaddie

We had a wonderful conversation about his life and evolution as a performance coach.

Tim has a fascinating background as a writer, golfer and now coach.

He wrote a wonderful book about the great Moe Norman called ‘The Feeling of Greatness’

We talked about the time Tim spent with Moe, playing golf and a fascinating insight to Moe’s connection to the target when he played.

Why and how Moe was so misunderstood

Onto Tim’s coaching career

Tim’s observation of the rampant narcissism in the golfing world today and how we can all become lost in the story of ‘I will be happy WHEN’

How we are constantly being fed the story that we are ‘BROKEN’

How we could access our own innate talent

How our Ego can hijack the coaching process

What Tim learned about coaching from Lou Reed

Tim O’Connor is a golf coach, award-winning writer, and podcaster living in Guelph, Ontario, Canada.

Tim came into coaching following a career as a music critic and then a golf writer during which he covered the major tours and wrote four books including The Feeling of Greatness: The Moe Norman Story, the biography of the mysterious Canadian regarded as the best ball-striker who ever lived. Tim is in the Ontario Golf Hall of Fame as a writer.

After being involved for 20 years in men’s work with the ManKind Project, Tim moved into coaching golfers, including the University of Guelph men’s and women’s golf team.

A self-described deep golf nerd, Tim is fascinated by the psychological and spiritual aspects of golf, which he brings together in his writing on the Substack platform, talks, and his Swing Thoughts podcast with Howard Glassman. Tim is completing his latest book, Quiet Mind Golf.

COMMITMENT - Could this be the SECRET to holing PUTTS? – Dr Laura Carey and Caesar Bayliss #31826 Jul 202401:04:27

Are you going to take ACTION and become a Certified Mind Factor coach?

https://themindfactor.net/the-certification-course/

Laura has conducted some amazing research around putting over the past number of years in particular around gaze control and also brain activity prior to actually hitting the putt.

What she has uncovered has the potential to transform the way putting is both learned and performed.

Are you going to take ACTION and become a Certified Mind Factor coach?

https://themindfactor.net/the-certification-course/

The conversation will REALLY get you thinking about the way you approach your game on the greens.

In our time together we looked at:

  • The difference in brain activity just before the stroke is made between successful and unsuccessful putters.
  • Why doubt over the ball is so detrimental to performance
  • How this increases brain activity which then compromises your stroke
  • Why a line on the ball may not be the most effective strategy
  • Why practicing with putting aids and gadgets can be of limited value
  • The role of the eyes in supplying information for your putt
  • The value of ‘quiet eye’
  • Busy eyes make for a bust brain
  • How to train to then perform
  • Why you shouldn’t just keep hitting putt after putt when you are training

This is a really refreshing and far reaching conversation that could potentially apply to the whole of your game

A lot of what Laura and Caesar had to say resonated with many of the ideas presented by Gary Nicol and myself in the Lost Art of Putting

Caesar Bayliss has been a PGA professional for over 20 years and specializes in putting. He coaches at The Wisley and other venues across the UK  Dr Laura Carey is a Lecturer at the University of the West of Scotland and a HCPC-registered Practitioner Psychologist. She has worked as an applied sport psychologist for over 15 years, offering support to a range of athletes, coaches and teams. Laura’s PhD was in golf putting, titled "Investigating Perceptual-Cognitive Expertise, Visual Gaze, and Neural Activity in Golf Putting".

Am I going to improve? – It DEPENDS – Michael Hebron #28220 Oct 202300:58:28

Today on the brain booster we are joined by coaching legend Michael Hebron.

Michael has just written a wonderful book with Stephen Yazulla titled ‘It Depends’

Download Mind Caddie for hundreds of short audio lessons and exercises produced by Karl and start improving your mental game the same way as six major champions: https://urlgeni.us/mindcaddie

The book is all about learning and what is required to get the best out of your lessons or your training.

It is an amazing piece of work with some great insights, many of which are counterintuitive.

It also reinforces what we have said on the Brain Booster many times about the need to honour your individuality.

The book is called:

‘It Depends’

As we discussed during our time together:

  • The need for ‘unintended outcomes’
  • The brain doesn’t learn without reference points
  • Swing too fast, swing too slow so you can FIND what is the ideal timing
  • Why you need to understand the rules of the CLUB
  • The need to understand RHYTHM and TIMING
  • The rhythm of ONE
  • Understand how the swinging of the club creates motion not the other way around
  • Take away the word better. The brain doesn’t learn from better, it learns much more from DIFFERENT
  • The need to be OBJECTIVE about outcomes as opposed to emotional evaluation
  • The need to be able to ADJUST to what is going on
  • The difference between TEACHING environments and LEARNING environments
  • The swing model is the GOLF COURSE

A truly wonderful conversation with one of the most influential coaches of the past 100 years.

A man who has dedicated his life to helping students and coaches alike how to LEARN better

We opened up our conversation with some fascinating insights about his experience in qualifying and all of the challenges he encountered by stepping out of his comfort zone and competing at a much higher level.

How Jon has learned to have a different relationship with the game and his ability to deal better with the inevitable chaos golf often throws at us

It is this relationship to unpredictable outcomes which for me is the heart of an effective mental game strategy

We had a really wide ranging conversation covering multiple topics such as:

  • Self learning and what it actually looks and feels like
  • How to develop more clubface awareness

Socrates would have been some golfer! – Nick Bradley #31719 Jul 202400:55:54

How ‘Socratic’ questioning could help transform your game

Today we have on the show internationally renowned coach Nick Bradley who has written a fantastic new book called ‘The 50 secrets to GREAT GOLF you don’t know about YET!’

https://themindfactor.net/the-certification-course/

One of the secrets really stood out to me

Socratic questioning and how being prepared to ‘go into’ the problem you have with your game could actually help find a solution

What would you ‘need’ to do to slice the ball?

Can you actually experience what you would need to do to deliberately create the ‘mistake’?

This area of enquiry was just one of the fascinating topics that we managed to cover in a really wide ranging conversation:

  • Why trying to get rid of the ‘ego’ is the ultimate ego trip
  • Playing to your strengths as a coach
  • The uses and misuses of technology
  • Becoming more of a SHOT coach
  • Giving our shots a ‘name’
  • The problem with ‘Method Coaching’ and why this is perhaps the least effective coaching model
  • The dangers of relying on our memory

Nick has had a very long and distinguished coaching career, studying with some of the world’s best coaches like David Leadbetter and then going on to coach top players such as Justin Rose

He is a deep thinker about the game and is refreshingly honest and forthright in his opinions of what we need to do to get the best from our game

The Art of ENOUGH – Becky Hall - The Mind Caddie - See the game DIFFERENTLY #31612 Jul 202400:52:30

Download Mind Caddie for hundreds of short audio lessons and exercises produced by Karl and start improving your mental game the same way as six major champions: https://mindcaddie.onelink.me/7xjx/znldwgbi

During a very wide ranging conversation we to a deep dive into the concept of ENOUGH

What is enough?

In a world where we it is constantly being reinforced that we are not enough and we need more of just about everything it was so refreshing to chat with Becky and to look through a different lens.

Are you going to take ACTION and become a Certified Mind Factor coach?

  • We are often overloaded with demands on time
  • How can we get better at focusing our attention on the RIGHT things?
  • The current epidemic of burnout
  • Self doubt and how even the very best can experience this on a regular basis
  • What is REALLY driving the feeling of not being ‘good enough’?
  • Coming from a position of SCARCITY and LACK
  • Needing external validation for what we do
  • Quietening the inner critic and allowing yourself to seek excellence
  • Following a path that really matters to you
  • Mastering and exploring your craft
  • Why ‘Enough’ isn’t just sitting back and doing nothing
  • The need to REST and RESTORE

How to avoid the trap of ‘working harder’ in terms of your training as opposed to training efficiently

Within the theme we have of looking at the game differently Becky provides a refreshingly alternative perspective.

Nothing in the conversation suggests we shouldn’t aim to maximise our skills but it does mean coming at it from a position of ‘enough’ as opposed to a position of lack.

Becky Hall is an experienced EMCC executive coach, leadership consultant and facilitator. She has worked one to one with senior leaders and executive teams across all sectors for over twenty years.

Her new book is called ‘The Art of Enough’

  • What effect are they having on you?
  • Is the role of the coach being overstated?
  • What do you actually DO with the information you receive?
  • What does a great training environment look like?
  • 150 Tour winners used or trained at Andrews facility
  • What tough environments can do to enhance CREATIVITY
  • What are you trying to achieve and how can your environment do to support that?
  • How can you utilise your own golf course to set some new challenges?
  • The long term benefits of DELIBERATE MISS
  • Make your games relative to what you want to achieve
  • Make sure you PERSONALISE your drills
  • Does your practice session fully ENGAGE you?

Here is a great quote from his website

"You see … before I  became a golfer I was a pioneer in the executive coaching field, My experience working with professional athletes and corporate leaders revealed this truth: Feelings precede thoughts. Or, to put it differently, you can’t think positive when you feel negative."

Kent is a good golfer in his own right and he charts his own personal experiences of the game with a big following of players.

The first time we spoke it was clear that Kent and I shared many similar trains of thought.

In particular the importance of JOURNALING

We had a truly memorable conversation discussing the numerous benefits of being a regular journal taker.

It is something we have spoken about on this show and promoted heavily in the Mind Caddie app

We discussed

  • The difference between THINKING about gratitude and actually FEELING it
  • The ability to be playful when you are hitting your shots
  • Why journaling can help us to balance out the overload of information that is coming at us in the modern world
  • Why evolution got us to focus on the negative and our mistakes
  • How our thinking patterns become so habitual and how journaling can help shift this
  • Why BALANCE is so important from an evolutionary perspective
  • Why journaling can help us to still get something out of a bad outcome day on the course
  • The ability to develop spontaneous acceptance and to be able to be NEUTRAL to the variety of outcomes.
  • The importance of acknowledging the GOOD shots and the good experiences
  • If this was your LAST round of golf how would you want to experience it?

So much of what Kent says is based in real world experience and makes for that most elusive of qualities common sense. When you listen to him you realise just how precious this NEXT opportunity is to play the game.

Take the plunge and embark on a year of journaling and just see what it can do for your game.

How we can ‘Battle Back’ from adversity – Mark Shervill #37703 Oct 202500:51:09

On today’s show we have a wonderful conversation with Mark Shervill a tremendous coach from the hidden gem that is Lilleshall Golf Club in Shropshire

I have known Mark for very many years

We first met when he was a PGA Trainee at The Belfry over twenty years ago.

Since then he has spent time evolving himself into a really effective coach

He spent many days with Nick Middleton from Zen Golf on the DP World Tour

His approach is really holistic and embraces all aspects of the Body-Mind system

He and his wife Lisa Shervill, a former Ladies European Tour professional run some fantastic programs at Lilleshall especially focused around junior development

His enthusiasm is infectious

Perhaps the work that gives Mark most pleasure though is his work with ex forces personel in the ‘Battle Back’ program

Helping ex military men and women get back on track with their lives through the medium of golf.

This is genuine contribution to the game and really makes you think about the sheer privilege we have just to be able to go out and play golf in a beautiful environment

We discuss the importance of creating SHOTS and the sheer joy which can be gained in turning an image in your head to the reality of a beautifully struck shot

Over 50 of Mark‘s pupils have now completed the Mobilise Your Swing Programme that Mark, Lisa and Aaron have created together combining physical, technical and mental aspects of golf with great results in all of these individuals from Junior to Senior Golfers.

This great success has led them to  form the Shervill Golf Performance website where you can access the Mobilise Your Swing programme for yourself to help your body make the best golf swings possible!

They also have a Speed & Power gym based programme that is proving to be a huge success, as well as The Junior Foundations programme which is ideal for giving young golfers the athletic foundations that they will need now and in the future.

The Mystery of the Yips – Could this be the solution? – Trevor Jones #37626 Sep 202501:00:00

Today on the Mind Caddie we are joined by a great guest in the shape of Trevor Jones.

Trevor is a top Mental Performance coach who has done extensive research on the YIPS and more importantly has been finding ways to really make a difference to people who suffer from this debilitating issue.

With a couple of esteemed colleagues he has put together a potentially revolutionary program

We had a great discussion about Trevor’s own background, his own playing and what led him to have such an interest into the specific area of yips in golf and indeed in other sports

How an individual lesson that didn’t work out well got Trevor thinking about a different approach to the yips

  • What is causing more people to get the yips
  • What is the mind actually trying to achieve with the yips?
  • Is it technique or is it mental?
  • The importance of the correct CONCEPTS
  • Having a FLEXIBLE framework
  • How more and more information can only cause more damage
  • How RESISTING your experience is often the root of the issues
  • The power of ACCEPTANCE and CURIOSITY
  • Establishing ‘psychological safety’
  • Playing from a ‘safe place’
  • Stop trying to FEEL better and get better at FEELING
  • What the ‘fear’ is really trying to do for us
  • Being willing to ‘observe’ the yips
  • The myth of the ‘perfect state’
  • How the individual is SACRED. Once size doesn’t fit all one size fits NONE

You will gain so much from this very enlightening conversation

Today on the Mind Caddie we are joined by top Performance coach Jon Wallett

I have known Jon for many years and have always been really impressed by his approach to getting the very best from his players

He has had outstanding results with players at every level but especially in helping young players realise some of their golfing ambitions

He has some incredible resources on his website

www.elitecoaching.com

We had a wonderful conversation about Jon’s research into what truly makes the difference in developing TOUR PLAYERS

The research program he created by interviewing many European Tour players and winners

His findings are incredible:

We got the chance to discuss:

  • What most training is potentially making players worse
  • The need to find YOUR golfing DNA
  • Setting out on a path of SELF MASTERY
  • Why you need to reflect on your successes and become more in tune with what makes YOU tick
  • The THREE types of effective training
  • Why we could utilise the GOLF COURSE so much more in our training
  • Challenges for the course
  • Getting your brain comfortable with the golf course
  • Looking at your RELATIONSHIP to the game
  • Why ‘good enough’ can be so effective
  • Staying on YOUR path to mastery
  • The joy and benefits of GRATITUDE and APPRECIATION

A really great session with a top coach who is making a big difference in the world of golf

The Scottie Scheffler Secret – Randy Joyner #36427 Jun 202501:02:41

Today on the Mind Caddie we are joined again by my great friend from the USA Randy Joyner
Randy is a TOP coach who keeps producing outstanding results with players at all levels but especially young college and aspiring tour players
He is a Certified Mind Factor coach and has been kind enough to say that the work we have done over the years has had a big influence on his game and his coaching

He has won 2 Pro Ams recently with sub 65 scores without ANY practice whatsoever
We go into detail about that

We also dive very deep into the skill of acceptance and why it is a capacity that is so important to keep working on and developing.

We also spent time talking about his work on the PGA tour as a broadcast analyst and how he has been following some of the best players in the world in the final rounds on a Sunday.

Some fantastic insights about the final round that Rory played in the Masters this year and what we can all learn from that experience. Also, we look closely at Randy‘s observation of Scottie Scheffler and how he manages to keep the game simple by being very aware of what is clubface is doing during the swing, and having the capacity to adjust when required,

This is a podcast with somebody who has an incredible depth and breadth of knowledge about the game, both as a player, coach and broadcaster

Enjoy your time with Randy Joyner.

I will be happy when …… Karl Morris  #36320 Jun 202500:16:25
On today’s show, we have a solo run touching on a subject, very dear to my heart, the concept of ‘I will be happy when’   How we all fall into the trap of putting off our enjoyment of life for for some perceived moment off in the future, when the stars will align everything will come together, and I will be happy ever after as a result of achieving X Y or Z.   You can fill in the blanks that may be winning a major tournament. It may be winning the club championship or breaking 100 for the first time never mind creates the stories of perceived happiness off in the future, and it can be so destructive to her actual enjoyment of the game right now. Not only destructive. It actually creates a lot of tension in the system in extreme cases real fear and anxiety. Even the great Rory McIlroy seems to have fallen into the trap of this after winning the US Masters, and seemingly afterwards falling into some kind of malaise and unhappiness.   He is human like the rest of us within this, but I feel there is a way out of this by really understanding the value of seen through the illusion and then falling in love with the idea of being on the path to mastery. Karl shares some key insights. How are you can embrace this philosophy to liberate your own game, and get so much closer to your true potential   Enjoy this solo offering and don’t forget to give us a review wherever you get your Podcasts, why not subscribe or follow it's FREE
