The Psychology of Sustained Weight Loss and Overcoming Lifelong Food Addiction with "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll – E117

Episode 117

mercredi 28 avril 2021Duration 01:04:12

Learn the secrets to radically improving your health from “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll, who lost 265 pounds and kept it off!

At Chuck's heaviest, he weighed 420 pounds and had amassed a 66-inch waist while requiring a size 6xl shirt.

Fearing that his life was spiraling out of control and nearing an end, he opted to undergo weight loss surgery. Prior to the procedure he was convinced that the drastic measure would become like all the other failed attempts to lose weight. At least, he thought, he could go to his grave confident that he tried everything.

Chuck was just 27 years old at the time and didn’t think he would live to see 30. But then the unexpected happened. He woke up from the surgery and never looked back. Although a critical component, the surgery proved only to be the first step in his journey. In fact, he only attributes 10 percent of his weight loss success to the procedure.

In just over a year, Chuck shed 265 pounds by conquering food addiction and devoting himself to a healthier lifestyle. He’s now maintaining weight loss by eating a plant-based diet. Going plant-based once seemed unthinkable to Chuck, but now it’s going back to eating processed meat and dairy that would be inconceivable.

The confidence he gained from the weight loss enabled him to pursue his dream of becoming a sports reporter. He has hosted a number of radio shows with NFL players. One of the players gave him the nickname “The Weight Loss Champion” after news of his transformation spread through the locker room.

In this episode, we chat with Chuck about:

  • Breaking food addiction
  • Sustaining weight loss
  • His eating habits growing up
  • His failed diet attempts
  • When he realized he was addicted to food
  • His emotional experiences of being 420 pounds
  • The secret to keeping the weight off
  • Where a lot of people go wrong when trying to lose weight
  • and much more

6x The Carbohydrates For 1/3 The Insulin...Meet Maia – E116

Episode 116

mardi 20 avril 2021Duration 12:44

Maia was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2015.⁣

She was told by her doctor what many type 1’s are told at the time of diagnosis, eat a low-carb diet. She followed their advice and returned to her life as an athlete.

Later, she decided to go full keto which worked for a while and she was able to maintain an A1c of 7.1%. Eventually, she developed amenorrhea (loss of her period) and was unable to keep her blood glucose from spiking during exercise. ⁣
⁣⁣
She searched online and discovered the work of Anthony William and his book, Liver Rescue. She followed it for 2 weeks and ate just raw fruits and veggies.

Within those 2 weeks of being on a low-fat, plant-based, whole-food diet her blood glucose dropped, she gained tons of energy and decided she couldn’t go back. This leads her to the Mastering Diabetes book which she read in one night while she was attending college and she was blown away by the science.

Date: August 2019 to January 2020
Fasting BG (mg/dL): 180 to 120
A1c (%): 7.1 to 6.3
Weight (lbs.): 150 to 136
Carbohydrate to Insulin Ratio: 7:1 to 20:1
Total Cholesterol: - to 116
Carbohydrates p/day (g): 50 to 300

After switching to a low-fat, plant-based, whole-food diet, Maia now eats whole-carbohydrate foods without experiencing dramatic blood glucose spikes, she enjoys her food, her period returned and has more energy than ever.

The Hidden Heart Disease Risk Factor Few are Talking About with Joel Kahn – E111

Episode 111

mardi 9 mars 2021Duration 37:54

We are excited to be joined by Dr. Joel Kahn.

Dr. Kahn is a cardiologist and a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Wayne State University School of Medicine and a Summa Cum Laude graduate from the University of Michigan Medical School.

He’s known as “America’s Holistic Heart Doc,” and has authored many peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. He writes articles for MindBodyGreen, Thrive Global, and Reader’s Digest and has five books in publication including The Whole Heart Solution, Dead Execs Don’t Get Bonuses as well as The Plant-Based Solution.

He has regular appearances on Dr. Phil, The Doctors, and Fox 2 News. He also recently debated with Chris Kresser about the evidence in support of plant-based diets on the Joe Rogan Experience and has been featured with Larry King Live in a recent special about heart health.

He also owns 2 health restaurants in Detroit and a food truck in Austin, Texas. How he accomplishes all of this is a complete mystery to us, but suffice it to say that Dr. Kahn is a MACHINE, he’s our favorite stand-up comedian, and we’re honored to call him a friend.

In this episode of the Mastering Diabetes Audio Experience, we’ll cover:

  • An article he recently wrote in which he referred to low-carbohydrate diets as “high-coffin” diets, because there is ample scientific evidence that low-carbohydrate diets actually increase your risk for premature death.
  • Why, despite this, many health professionals teach people to INCREASE their intake of meat, cheese, fish, eggs, and vegetable oil, claiming that it’s the best way to “reverse” type 2 diabetes specifically because they are low in carbohydrate energy.
  • What benefits would someone gain from becoming a plant-based low-carbohydrate eater?
  • What are the exact benefits of short-term ketosis referenced by Dr. Valter Longo and how do those benefits change over time?
  • What happens to blood lipids and specifically LDL cholesterol following a plant-based low-carbohydrate or ketogenic diet?
  • What happens to diabetes risk and blood glucose control following a plant-based low-carbohydrate or ketogenic diet?
  • If there was ONE THING you could say to teach people the truth about nutrition to clear up the confusion that the Internet promotes, what would it be?

You can find Dr. Joel Khan on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drjkahn/

And on his website: https://www.drjoelkahn.com/
