Talking points: grief, loss, anxiety, helplessness Every so often, I'll have an anonymous guest on the show to give listeners a glimpse into what men's work at ManTalks is really like. Behind much of it is ungrieved childhood loss. This is a great episode to dig into if you feel like you manage fine when life is good, but fall apart when it doesn't. There's insight on some of the consequences of not having the chance to properly grieve. Many don't come out at all. To be clear, I am NOT saying therapy as an industry is totally broken or something to ignore. But there ARE some things I think it could do better. Dr. Russell Kennedy - The True Origins Of Anxiety07 Aug 202301:15:10
Talking points: anxiety, suicide, mental illness, neurology, culture, psychology This was SUCH a thorough and enjoyable interview. Always a pleasure to get the practical yet caring advice from Dr. Kennedy, someone I’ve known for a long time. If you or someone you know has been diagnosed or deals with anxiety, this is THE episode for you. We cover all the ways anxiety, the body, and the mind are connected, where to begin helping yourself (or others) with those anxious feelings, what the therapy and personal development industries often miss out, and way way more. (00:00:00) - Intro and Russell’s defining moment(00:04:03) - How Russell dealt with the complexities of a schizophrenic father(00:11:33) - How anxiety is a manifestation of something much deeper(00:15:38) - What are some of the most common anxiety myths?(00:18:35) - What is the actual purpose of anxiety?(00:21:54) - How do you talk to people who dismiss anxiety and trauma?(00:33:37) - Do you think kids are more anxious than ever before?(00:40:10) - What do we do for kids knowing that distraction culture will likely worsen?(00:47:30) - What do you mean by “anxiety isn’t a feeling”?(00:51:11)  - Anxiety vs Alarm(00:58:26) - Where do you begin helping someone with anxiety?(01:08:17) - Is there a difference between anxiety and stress within the brain? (01:12:36) - Russell’s final thoughts on anxiety  Dr. Russell Kennedy, aka “The Anxiety MD” specializes in the art and neuroscience of helping people recover from anxiety disorders. He knows anxiety from the inside out, as he developed his own anxiety disorder as a result of growing up with a dad with severe schizophrenia.  Dr. Kennedy has degrees and advanced training in medicine, neuroscience, and developmental psychology—but it’s not all science, as he is also a certified yoga and meditation teacher and was a professional stand-up comedian for over a decade (no joke!) In his award-winning book and audiobook, ANXIETY RX, he shows a practical, actionable program for anxiety relief that incorporates a combination of the latest in neuroscience with the grounding wisdom of the body with the ultimate goal of relieving the anxious thoughts of the mind. Using neuroscience (think "The Body Keeps the Score") and blending that science with a more artistic approach he learned through living at a temple in India, taking psychedelics, and being a natural and gifted intuitive, Dr. Kennedy gives a unique and never before seen understanding of what anxiety truly is,  and further, exactly how it can be successfully treated. Dr Russ wants to make sure that nobody has to suffer with anxiety as he did. David Kessler - Finding Meaning In Grief And Loss22 Jul 202400:58:50
Talking points: grief, loss, relationships, masculinity, anger I met David at a psychotherapy symposium a while back, and it wasn’t long before we were sharing some of the things we’ve grieved. He just has that calm yet strong presence. He’s also, of course, an absolute expert therapist. We dig into everything loss in this episode; how the 5 stages actually work, what death does both for and to us, and much, much more. This is absolutely an episode to share with someone you feel could use it. (00:00:00) - Intro, do men and women grieve differently, and the toll of not grieving (00:06:34) - Why unprocessed grief manifests as anger, anxiety, and more (00:11:10) - What brought David into grief work, the five stages, and where people get stuck (00:24:43) - On the loss of David’s son (00:32:12) - Does grief reshape identity, and the different ways of moving through it (00:35:50) - How to move through grief, and discerning when to “live again” (00:42:51) - David’s take on death denial, living currently, and how death challenges our assumptions (00:50:43) - The sixth stage of grief, and the nuances of meaning after loss David Kessler is one of the world’s foremost experts on grief and loss. His experience with thousands of people on the edge of life and death has taught him the secrets to living a happy and fulfilled life, even after life’s tragedies. He is the author of six books, including the new bestselling book, Finding Meaning: The Sixth Stage of Grief. He co-authored two books with Elisabeth Kubler Ross, including On Grief and Grieving updated her 5 stages for grief. His first book, The Needs of The Dying received praise from Saint (Mother) Teresa. David’s personal experience as a child witnessing a mass shooting while his mother was dying in a hospital helped him begin his journey. For most of his life, David has taught physicians, nurses, counselors, police, and first responders about the end of life, trauma, and grief. He facilitates talks, workshops and retreats for those experiencing grief. However, despite his vast knowledge on grief, his life was turned upside down by the sudden death of his twenty-one-year-old son. It inspired him to write his newest book, Finding Meaning. David’s volunteer work includes being an LAPD Specialist Reserve for traumatic events as well as having served on the Red Cross’s disaster services team. He worked for over a decade in a three-hospital system, and was even trained for bio-terrorism events and epidemics/pandemics.  Connect with David -Website: https://grief.com/ -Book: Finding Meaning: The Sixth Stage of Grief: https://grief.com/sixth-stage-of-grief/ -Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/iamdavidkessler/ -Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/IamDavidKessler/ -YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/davidkesslerongrief *** This episode is also brought to you by BetterHelp. Men's Work Session - Healing The Relationship To Anger19 Jun 202300:42:08
Talking points: anger, inner critic, passive aggressiveness, shame Haven't done one of these in a while! Every so often I'll have an anonymous guest on the show to give listeners a glimpse into what men's work at ManTalks is actually like. This time, my guest is already familiar with what we do, so I dive right in. If you're the kind of person who has difficulty standing up for themselves, or can't seem to control negative self-talk, this may be a helpful episode to dig into. We talk a lot about something I call "implosive anger", aka when instead of having a healthy relationship with the anger you feel, you suppress and direct it back at yourself. Katherine Ann Cantrell - Is Healing Decades Of Trauma Even Possible?05 Jun 202301:03:22
Talking points: trauma, sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse, trauma culture, therapy I was connected to Katherine Ann through my own mentor, the incredible gestalt therapist Duey Freeman. Her story is intense, powerful, and most importantly, it's shows the importance and possibilities inherent in trauma work and group work. I applaud Katherine Ann for coming forward and sharing her story. [00:01:12] - Katherine Ann's defining moment [00:08:50] - the role Katherine Ann's father played in her life [00:15:12] - Were you believed about what was happening, and how did your trauma start manifesting? [00:26:44] - How did what happened shape your perception of men, and how has that evolved since doing trauma excavation? [00:40:16] - What would you say to people who struggle with forgiving what's happened? [00:45:27] - What is trauma excavation? [00:54:44] - Do you get the sense that trauma work has become so mainstream it's been watered down? Katherine Ann is a mother of five grown children – 2 daughters and 3 stepsons. She resides in Boulder, CO with her beloved husband. After years of abuse and trauma, followed by 30 years (thus far) of healing, she recently released her website – see KatherineAnn.com – and is sharing her life story and experiences in hopes of helping others heal from trauma and abuse, and transform from a place of just surviving to thriving in life. The connection Katherine Ann has with (Connor) is through Duey Freeman, who has been a therapist for almost 50 years with about 80,000 contact hours with clients. Katherine Ann has worked with Duey individually and collectively with her siblings. Recently, Duey stated on Traver Boehm’s podcast that, Katherine Ann, and her brother and her sister, “were involved in probably the most bizarre and intense situation of abuse – both physical and sexual – that I’ve seen.” In 2008, in a letter of promotion for the three siblings when they planned to write a book together, Duey wrote about the abuse as, “the most intense, insidious, and malicious case of abuse and incest I have ever known. It is a story of love and hate, of physical and sexual abuse, of incredible humiliation and manipulation. A story that makes you cry and then pray for both forgiveness and healing.” Katherine Ann’s book will be published later this year. The Weaponization Of Psychology18 May 202300:27:46
This is something I'm seeing a lot on social media, but also in everyday dialogue and even some clients: labeling someone with a definitive psychological term to shut down dialogue or shame someone else, usually without really knowing what's being talked about. This only speeds up our polarization and harms our ability to connect. How about we...stop doing that? Note: the article in the NYT I mentioned was written by Dr. Tara Isabella Burton, not Bayo Akomolafe. I'll link it below, along with his interview on the Emerald Podcast. The Problem With Letting Therapy-Speak Invade Everything: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/12/opinion/mental-health-therapy-instagram.html The Emerald: The Revolution Will Not Be Pscyhologized, Part 2: https://podtail.com/en/podcast/the-emerald/the-revolution-will-not-be-psychologized-part-2-in/ Pick up my brand-new book, Men's Work: A Practical Guide To Face Your Darkness, End Self-Sabotage, And Find Freedom: https://mantalks.com/mens-work-book/ Check out some free resources: How To Quit Porn | Anger Meditation | How To Lead In Your Relationship Build brotherhood with a powerful group of like-minded men from around the world. Dan Cnossen - Navy SEAL To Paralympic Athlete —One Day At A Time15 May 202301:09:26
Talking points: Navy SEALS, grit, BUD/S, hardship, mindset, rehabilitation, paralympics We had some network issues near the end, so Dan is coming back for round 2 soon! I'm grateful for every single interview I get to do, but it's less often that I'm so deeply humbled. Listening to Dan's story, and his thoughtful and considerate approach to such intense trauma, is something that will stick with me for a long, long time. Listen to this episode for a gripping and honest look into the life of an incredible athlete. (00:00:00) - Welcome and Dan's defining moment (00:06:09) - What was BUD/S like for Dan? What were some the greatest lessons? (00:19:20) - What goes into being a SEAL? (00:27:41) - What was your first deployment like? (00:33:11) - How Dan lost his legs (00:42:00) - The aftermath and the injuries (01:02:51) - Where did the desire to become a paralympic athelete come from? Lieutenant Commander Dan Cnossen was serving as the platoon commander for SEAL Team One in Afghanistan in September 2009 when he stepped on an IED (improvised explosive device) and was wounded in the explosion. The accident caused Cnossen to lose both his legs just above the knee. After over forty surgeries, Cnossen went through rehabilitation at the Bethesda National Naval Medical Center and later at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where he learned to walk with his new prosthetics. Here's How You Deal With Regret11 May 202300:13:01
Talking points: regret, purpose, direction I was recently reminded of a powerful moment I had with an old mentor. At the time, I was having trouble deciding what I wanted to do, where I wanted to go, and I felt directionless and fearful of regret. This is a topic I've covered before, but it's one worth reflecting on. Listen in. This podcast is brought to you by Organifi! Coleman Hughes - The Collapse Of Moderate Politics08 May 202301:14:40
Talking point: centrism, politics, social media, racism, censorship, AI, China, CRT Hot on the heels of last week's chat with Amir Odom, Coleman and I dug into a wide range of topics. We mostly focused on political polarization and where that's coming from, but also how AI might play into further issues, his definition of critical race theory, and much more. Listen to this episode if you've been curious about any of the above talking points, don't know where to start, and want a level-headed discussion. Coleman is a smart guy, and (I'd say) mostly center-right in his politics, so this is a good place to begin gaining awareness of the issues. [00:04:33] - Coleman's defining moment [00:10:16] - Do you think we live in a death-phobic culture? [00:14:50] - When you look at the American political landscape, how do you describe what's happening? [00:22:45] - Do you have any hope for the de-polarization of America? [00:31:55] - What are you most concerned about re: American democracy in 2023? [00:41:02] - CRT and education [00:51:50] - Cultural power vs political power [00:57:34] - On victimhood [01:05:31] - Can you define a race-blind society? Coleman Hughes is a writer, podcaster, and opinion columnist who specializes in issues related to race, public policy, and applied ethics. Coleman’s writing has been featured in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, National Review, Quillette, The City Journal, and The Spectator. He has appeared on many TV shows and podcasts, including Real Time with Bill Maher, Making Sense with Sam Harris, and The Jordan B. Peterson Podcast.     In June 2019, he testified before the U.S. Congress. Born and raised in northern New Jersey, Coleman briefly attended the Juilliard School to study jazz trombone before dropping out to pursue a career as an independent jazz/hip-hop artist. Shortly thereafter, Coleman discovered a passion for applied ethics and public policy at Columbia University, where he graduated with a B.A. in philosophy. What Pornhub Data Says About Men04 May 202300:18:54
Talking points: porn, stress, hentai, isolation Every year, Pornhub releases a bunch of stats detailing how long people are watching, top search terms, when people are watching, and more. This data is from Dec 2022, so it's a bit old, but I wanted to share some thoughts on what some of these stats might be implying, particularly for men. This is an episode for anyone curious about porn's implications outside of just "sexual entertainment". I go into how it might be affecting (or a be a response to) other parts of our lives, and offer up some thoughts on what to do. This podcast is brought to you by Organifi! Amir Odom - Leaving BLM, And Concerns About The LGBTQ Community01 May 202300:55:41
Talking points: growing up gay, LGBTQ+ issues, trans issues, culture Fair warning, this is a different kind of episode than the ones I usually put out. I encourage you to listen to it fully. Thanks to Amir for his candor and willingness to come on the show. Amir Odom takes time every week to reflect on…well, anything that’s been on his mind that week. Sometimes it’s current events, sometimes it’s a story from 10 years ago, sometimes it’s a conspiracy theory and sometimes it’s his alter ego “Jamal” going on a rant. You never know what you are going to get, but that’s what keeps it interesting. [05:17] - Amir’s defining moment[10:24] - What was life like for Amir growing up?[21:34] - Do Black Americans still face systemic issues?[27:27] - Is the culture most Black men grow up under not conducive? Why?[29:14] - Broadly, what’s going on in the LGBTQ+ community?[48:54] - Amir’s mission Connect with Amir -Website: https://www.amirodom.com/ -YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@amirxodom This podcast is brought to you by Organifi! Why Bother Getting Married?27 Apr 202300:13:03
Talking points: marriage, relationships With marriage rates seemingly at an all-time low, and most of the old reasons for marriage largely defunct, it's a question many men are asking. It was something I wrestled with too. So...why bother with marriage? And why did I get married? [00:00] - Statistics on marriage and some of the reasons we used to get married [06:56] - Why I chose marriage This podcast is brought to you by Organifi! Danica Patrick - Where Achievement And Spirituality Meet24 Apr 202301:35:24
Talking points: masculinity, femininity, achievement, dating, psychedelics, competition, culture, truth, what men and women want (and what they get wrong) Wow. Danica and I covered a LOT of territory in this conversation. Like, top 3 widest-ranging conversations I’ve had on the podcast. Listen in for everything from masculine/feminine dynamics, to the nature of truth, to sharing psychedelic stories, to what men get wrong about women (and vice versa). This is a brilliant episode to dig into if you’re looking less for answers and more for wonder. Much of what we discussed is better served by not forcing solutions, but simply wondering about viewpoints. Plus, you get a little of everything in this one!   [00:03:54] - Danica’s defining moment [00:11:41] - Women and the masculine [00:17:49] - How did masculine energy show up in Danica’s career? [00:23:47] - How does it feel to be told, as a woman, “You’re more masculine than I am”? [00:37:17] - The intersection of achievement and spirituality [00:44:52] - Psychedelic experiences [00:54:24] - How has your imagination and curiosity shaped your life? [01:08:28] - How do you view the masculine and feminine culturally? [01:30:18] - What do women get wrong about men, and vice versa?   About Danica Patrick At just 10 years old, Danica’s racing career began after her parents bought her a go-kart. After winning numerous regional and national go-kart titles, Danica left the Midwest at 16 years old to compete in the cutthroat world of European road racing. As a racecar driver, Danica Patrick broke barriers and set records with her on-track performance. With her racing career behind her, Danica looks to her next chapter as she focuses on her passions: good food, great wine, fitness and helping others achieve their goals. Moving into her next chapter, retired from racing, Danica’s focus has shifted to her role as an entrepreneur and business owner. Danica has launched the clothing line – Warrior by Danica Patrick, authored a book Pretty Intense, and is the sole proprietor of Somnium, a vineyard in Napa Valley, California. In addition to these passion projects, Danica also continues to do inspirational speaking engagements and she plans to build upon these initiatives in the coming years. The Big Misunderstanding About What Women Are Attracted To20 Apr 202300:09:44
Shorter episode today, but something I'd love to get your thoughts on. This came from a recent conversation between Lex Friedman and Aella, a sex researcher, writer, and sex worker. She surveyed her followers on what men and women actually want in the bedroom, and noticed an interesting discrepancy. I polled my own followers and found something similar. Listen in!
