Fair warning: you're probably going to want to take notes. I sat down with three entrepreneurs who've built wildly successful businesses using completely different approaches—from TikTok and marketing funnels to community engagement and literally zero marketing budget to Bloody Marys at barbershops and turning a lawsuit into viral marketing gold. The best part? Their success isn't just measured in revenue—we're talking 60 million bars of soap donated, becoming the "doer" in your community who solves real problems, and a family business that's been going strong for 20 years. You're about to hear the unfiltered, no-fluff truth about what actually works in marketing, straight from people who've done it. SHOW NOTES → I Spent 2 Days With 2,400 Small Business Owners. | How to Draw People In | Book Club | 'Hooked' by Nir Eyal | 215 | 16 Jan 2024 | 01:06:05
I had heard amazing things about this book and was so so excited to cover it in this months Book Club. The more I read, however, the more I realized that Hooked is really geared toward tech companies, tech products, things like apps and games, and not physical products or services like the ones most of us have as our businesses. That’s not to say this wasn’t a great book! Charelle and I were able to pull out so many lessons and ideas from each section, and throughout our conversation, apply them to business models you might have as a listener of this podcast. It was a fun exercise in finding the generalities in each marketing method, and thinking about how they can be used across industries. Plus, I got to ask my favorite question: What can we learn from this? Another aspect of this book that I really liked was the way the author, Nir Eyal, took the time to consider the ethics of the Hook Theory, the marketing strategy he outlines in the book. I have talked before on this podcast about how I dislike using the language of hunting or fishing when it comes to how we market, (people are not fish!), so I did pause at “Hook…” But Eyal takes a lot of care in considering the ethics of his theory, which I really appreciated, and think we all need to think about more as marketers. So, an unconventional episode, but one really worth giving a listen because there is so much to get out of it!

| How to Build Your Business Without Social Media with Rebecca Tracey | 214 | 09 Jan 2024 | 00:39:33 | |
Okay my friends, I hear you loud and clear. Lots of you are experiencing social media burnout, and I can relate. I’ve been there. The ever-shifting algorithms, the pressure to constantly create content, and the time suck of putting yourself out there over and over again, often with minimal returns on that investment. It is exhausting. Personally, I still really enjoy social media for the most part, but that’s more of a preference than a hard and fast rule, and as regular listeners of this podcast know, social media is certainly not my main marketing focus. Beyond that, social meda isn’t for everyone, and it doesn’t have to be! It feels kind of radical to say that on a marketing podcast, but it’s the truth. You do not need social media. My guest today has made NON-social media marketing the focal point of her marketing, and I am so excited to dig in with her. Rebecca Tracey works with aspiring life coaches, health coaches, healers, and other service-based businesses to build a business that will stand the test of time (and not be at the whim of whatever the newest trendy marketing fad is!). She helps clients clear the clutter and bring them back to foundations so they can articulate their vision clearly and move forward. Rebecca’s message? Marketing without social media, (or at least without the need for social media), IS POSSIBLE. I found this conversation energizing and refreshing, and I know you will too.

| How to Really Know Your Audience with Nadine Nethery | 213 | 19 Dec 2023 | 00:50:12 | |
I am thrilled to share my interview with today’s guest! She joined us as a guest expert in my membership program, Making Good Happen, and after her talk I knew I needed to have her on the podcast. Nadine Nethery is an audience-driven copywriter and brand messaging strategist for female founders who want to intentionally attract, delight and retain their dream customers. I’ve danced around the topic of audience research on the podcast before, but up until now haven’t dived in. In my former life in the corporate sphere, my background is in market research, so I’ve been around the block when it comes to getting to know your customers. Nadine, however, completely amazed me in this episode. Her smart, original strategies for gaining insights into an audience are so inspiring, and the ways she uses AI as a tool to that end are also super thoughtful. I am so grateful to Nadine for all she shared. This conversation is an absolutel goldmine, and I cannot wait for you to give it a listen.

| How to Approach Your Marketing | Book Club | 'This is Marketing' by Seth Godin | 212 | 15 Dec 2023 | 00:46:28 | |
Seth Godin is a thinker in the marketing space that I have admired for a very long time, and I am so excited to share some of his work with you all. While he may not use the words “ethical marketer” specifically to describe his work, Godin is definitely a non-bro marketer. He was one of the first to popularize the idea of “permission marketing,” not pushing a product or idea onto anyone, but selling to your ideal customer by adding value and being invited in by our customers. Now, as modern and innovative as Seth Godin is, this is also a very substantive marketing book. Charelle described it as a “thinking marketing book.” It’s not written like a straightforward how-to, and it requires active engagement from the reader to parse all the incredible lessons jam-packed on every page. But that’s why Charelle and I are here! To help pull out some of the headlines we think you shouldn’t miss, though there is too much goodness in this book to fit every valuable thing into one episode. Regardless of where you’re at in your marketing journey, I definitely recommend giving this one a read. MAKING GOOD SHOWNOTES:
| Hear Me Make A Big Decision with Nell Wulfhart | 211 | 12 Dec 2023 | 00:57:42 | |
So this one is kind of a big deal for me. In our most recent conversation, recorded this past October, we turned the tables in a totally new format for the show. Nell took the interviewer seat to help me make a huge decision about my businesses. We treated it like a live coaching session, with Nell taking me though the process just like she would with any of her clients. As you’ll hear in the episode, I was pretty amazed by the end. Let’s just say Nell is very good at what she does. Nell Wulfhart is a journalist, a writer, a world traveler, and on top of it all, a decision coach. Nell attributes her successes to her talent for making quick decisions at various crossroads in her life. To Nell, time wasted in perseverating over a decision is a tragedy, so she opened up shop to help others make decisions quickly and save precious time.

| Surviving, Thriving and Scaling with Jessie Williams | 209 | 28 Nov 2023 | 00:54:26 | |
Question for you. Did you know that I own a retail store? I’ve mentioned it a few times on the show, but in case this is news to you, let me tell you about it. My shop is called Station7 in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle. My mom started it in 2015 and I took it over in 2019, and it is so wonderful. We feature goods from mostly local artists and makers, we priorotize businesses that are owned by women and members of the BIPOC and LGBTQ communities. It is awesome. It’s not often that I get to sit down with a fellow retail store owner on this podcast, and it was so much fun to talk shop with Jessie Williams. Jessie is BUSY. Not only does she own three retail locations in North Carolina, two Edge of Urge locations, and one Unlikely Professionals, but she also owns and manages Cute House, a vacation rental home also in North Carolina. All of her businesses and side projects, (too many to list in this intro!), are focused on supporting up-and-coming makers and small businesses, as well as giving back to her community. I have admired Jessie and her work via Edge of Urge for a while now, and it was such a joy to sit down and pick her brain. She was so open and thoughtful, and I got so much out of our conversation. I know you will too.

But creatively… you might be feeling just tapped out. If you need some support planning your end-of-year marketing, today’s episode is for you. My goal is to give you some good ideas on WHAT TO ACTUALLY SAY in your marketing… in order to get those big results.
| The Art of Fascination | Book Club | 'Fascinate' by Sally Hogshead | 207 | 15 Nov 2023 | 00:54:15 | |
This book was a true goldmine. It is packed full of information and examples, way, way too many for us to deep dive into all of it. It’s worth it to pick up a copy of most of the books we discuss in Book Club, but Fascinate in particular is so dense with info, (in a fun way!), that we couldn’t possibly cover it all in an hour-long conversation. | The Power of In-Person Networking with Dani Sticka | 206 | 14 Nov 2023 | 00:42:22
A question for you, listener. How often do you think about networking? The term “Networking” can feel extremely general, and the practice of going into a room full of strangers to try and make connections can seem intimidating. We know it’s good for our businesses to meet new people and build partnerships, but figuring out the right way into a networking situation can feel daunting. My guest today found a lot of success in growing her business through networking, and I love her strategic and thoughtful approach to figuring out which rooms she wants to be in, and how she can get the most impact from her limited time. Whether you consider yourself an introvert or generally pretty outgoing, there is a LOT to get out of my conversation with Dani. I know I came away from the interview with a lot of food for thought.

| How to Build a Socially Conscious Business with Stephanie Malon-Rufi | 202 | 17 Oct 2023 | 00:43:10 | |
Today’s episode is about a topic that is near and dear to my heart; How to create and maintain a socially conscious business. My passion for this probably comes as no surprise, given the titles of my podcast and of my membership program, Making Good and Making Good Happen. Many if not most of this show’s listeners are, or want to be, socially conscious entrepreneurs, and it has been such a joy to witness the community forming and growing around this idea. As today’s guest said, it is so vital to surround yourself with peers and fellow business owners who “get it;” who support your business’s mission for good. To help us think through how to center doing good in our businesses, (hint: there are so, so many ways), Stephanie Malon-Rufi joined me for a fantastic conversation. Stephanie is the owner of Spark Good, where she consults with and coaches socially conscious entrepreneurs. She helps to distill their vision into a focused strategy and action plan, helps solve key challenges with mindset blocks, and helps them have a greater positive social impact with their business. It was so much fun to get to talk with someone else in the social entrepreneurship space, I learned a lot from my chat with Stephanie. No matter where your business is in its journey for good, I know you will get a lot out of this conversation.

| The Mechanics of a Great Story | Book Club | 'Stories That Stick' by Kindra Hall | 201 | 15 Oct 2023 | 00:53:53 | |
I’ve got to say, Charelle and I really enjoyed chatting about this one. As a book about storytelling, it should come as no surprise that in addition to laying out really helpful ideas and frameworks, Stories That Stick was super well-written and fun to read. This book is chock full of examples, questions, and prompts to get your wheels spinning. If you are someone who feels you don’t have anything to say, or that your story isn’t worth telling, by the time you finish Stories That Stick you will have stories in spades. Even though I’m someone who has always been interested in narrative and has found a lot of success in sharing stories with my audience, reading these prompts sent little sparks of inspiration shooting through my mind. Luckily, author Kindra Hall walks you through how to sift through your newfound pile of stories and choose which to tell and how. Stories That Stick was a joy to read and talk through with Charelle, and I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did.

This podcast has required a lot of me – time, energy, effort – even when I sometimes didn’t feel like I had it. But its given me so much more. And probably the most powerful thing that this podcast has given me is WISDOM! I’ve learned so, so, so much from hosting this podcast. So, today… we’re rounding up 10 things that I’ve learned from 200 episodes of Making Good. Truly – I probably could have come up with 200, but hey – I'd rather skip to the biggest and best. | Sleaze-free Selling with Megan Smyth | 198 | 26 Sep 2023 | 00:38:27
If you’re like most listeners of this podcast, you first started your business not because you’re an experienced business person… but because you have something you love to do, or you care about, and you decided to make it your full-time gig. And then, you find yourself in the situation we all find ourselves in as small business owners, which is that we have to sell our thing. Our product, our service, our offer. Whatever it is, it’s only a business if we’re selling it… and for most businesses, selling is an active process. We can’t just wait for sales to come in – we need to set our sales and marketing processes up so that those sales actually happen. This is for many of us quite uncomfortable. But it doesn’t have to be, and that’s where today’s episode comes in. We’re talking all about selling – and specifically – sleaze-free selling. Selling in a way that feels good and aligned. And I have a guest today! Her name is Megan Smyth. Megan is a sales copywriter and consultant for mission-driven entrepreneurs. Through her in-depth research process, personality-filled copy, and pull-no-punches consulting, she helps purpose-driven founders drive revenue and make a positive impact–without unethical business practices or sleazy sales tactics.

| A Year in 12 Weeks | Book Club | 'The 12 Week Year' by Brian P. Moran & Michael Lennington | 196 | 15 Sep 2023 | 00:52:20 | |
It seems like I’ve been saying this a lot lately, but this is truly the most Charelle of books. So much so that the whole second half of our conversation was essentially a clinic on how to incorporate the methods laid out in The 12 Week Year into your own life and business. One of the reasons I was excited to dig into this book with Charelle is because since she read it many years ago, she has baked it’s methods into so many aspects of her own life and business. She also uses it in her work with her clients, supporting their goals and growth using The 12 Week Year as a general framework. Needless to say, I had a blast picking Charelle’s brain. The 12 Week year is all about planning, taking action, and ultimately getting more out of our time, and I mean, who can argue with that? MAKING GOOD SHOWNOTES:

Miriam is an artist and founder of The Inspiration Place, where she helps other artists learn how to profit from their passion or become better artists via online tutorials, coaching, and The Inspiration Place podcast. She is also the author of Artpreneur The Step-By-Step Guide to Making a Sustainable Living from Your Creativity. Today, we’re talking about launching. What it is, why we should do it, and how to do it well. And if there’s anyone listening to this who feels like this episode might not be for them because they feel like launching doesn't apply to their business model…. Well, I would challenge you on that! Give this episode a listen and see if I can change your mind.

If you’re someone who is considering the future of your small business, this book is worth a read. In it, author Paul Jarvis makes the, (I would say very strong), case for why keeping your business small is the best plan, rather than aiming for growth just for growth’s sake.

| 4 Essential Stories with Ché Elizaga Castro | 190 | 08 Aug 2023 | 01:12:28 | |
I just have to say I really loved my conversation with today’s guest. On Making Good, we have talked quite a bit about transparency, authenticity, and sharing your story. But storytelling can feel like a huge task, and getting it right can seem intimidating. My guest today, Ché Elizaga Castro, demystifies what it means to share your story as a business owner, and does an amazing job breaking it down into clear, bite-sized pieces. Ché’s passion for what she does is truly infectious, and I’m so grateful for how generously she shared her wisdom. This episode is an absolute goldmine.

| How to Stop Procrastinating | 189 | 02 Aug 2023 | 00:46:05 | |
I’ve noticed something about this podcast, and specifically about you, dear listener. And that’s this: You tend to be something like me. The things that I’ve struggled with, so so so often they are things that you struggle with too. Things like self-doubt. Perfectionism. Consistency. And, as we’re talking about today – procrastination. The more I reflect on the topic of procrastination and its role in my own life – which, spoiler alert – has been huge. The more I realize that it’s such an important topic.

| How to Build a High-Converting Website with Elissa Voris | 188 | 25 Jul 2023 | 01:17:18 | |
It might come as a surprise that we haven’t spent much time talking about website optimization on this show yet. Trust me, when I realized that was the case, I was just as shocked. After all your website, as today’s guest called it, is “your business's home on the internet.” So of COURSE, in addition to it reflecting your brand and personality, we want it optimized for your business’s goals. I learned so much from my conversation with Elissa, and I know you will too.

| Principles of Imperfectionism [Permission to Do It Badly] | 183 | 28 Jun 2023 | 00:46:32 | |
Today’s episode is about something that is so, so, SO important – a concept that has changed my life and that I wish I’d put into practice so much earlier than I did. And that concept is what I call IMPERFECTIONISM. In other words, the willingness to do things imperfectly. Because of perfectionism, I’ve spent a lot of my life holding back. Not putting things out into the world, not sharing my work, not showing up. But. Here’s the thing: The only way to get better at something… in other words, to get closer to “perfect”... is to do the thing imperfectly.
