Learning to Take Hold of God's Promised Eternal Joy

Episode 98

lundi 16 septembre 2024Duration 33:03

In April 2024 General Conference, Elder Uchtdorf said something poignant, "Life is not an endless sequence of emotional highs." However, he went on to say that joy can be found every day. There are joys that God has given all around us that we can enjoy temporally. He wants that for us! But there is also a higher joy that can only come through living the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This joy is an eternal joy! In today's episode, Kathryn Davis and Kalo Latu discuss tapping into that higher, eternal joy.

How Prophetic Revelation Intersects with Personal Decision Making with Camille Fronk Olson

Episode 97

lundi 9 septembre 2024Duration 39:33

This episode is one of deeper learning and understanding of a gospel topic you may have wrestled with before. In this episode, Deseret Book President Laurel Day is joined by Camille Fronk Olson, author, teacher, and scriptorian, as they discuss the question, "how do I know if messages from the prophet are revelation for the church or just good wisdom?" They discuss scriptural occurrences, modern examples, and the tension of knowing what is revelation from God and what is counsel and if that difference matters.

Camille has been a pioneer for women in the Church Education System— having spent her entire career teaching scripture, most recently as a professor and department chair for the Department of Ancient Scripture at BYU. Even though she’s retired from teaching professionally, Camille is a popular speaker in various forums on Latter-day Saint beliefs, especially as they relate to women. She has written multiple books on the role of women in the scriptures and served as a member of the Young Women General Board and as a professor at the BYU Jerusalem Center. She loves traveling with her husband Paul, reading, and working in the yard, and perhaps most relatable: Camille loves a platter of nachos.

It's Always Worth the Effort: A Magnify Favorite

Episode 87

lundi 24 juin 2024Duration 23:39

This month on Magnify, our team has put our heads together to share different episodes from our past nearly 100 episodes to bring you some of our favorite moments. This week, we are featuring some thoughts from Kalo Latu's episode, "No Entry Level Requirements." Kalo stated that we often get in our own way of creating a relationship with the Savior because we think there is an entry level to starting that relationship. But this reminder that we can all do it, no matter where we are on the path, was a great one to reflect on.

Paige Sommer, the Magnify Community content specialist, shares how miracles are all around us, that we can find joy in the tough moments, and includes some of Kalo's wisdom from her first episode.

Episode 86

lundi 17 juin 2024Duration 18:41

As we continue to share some of the Magnify team’s favorites this month, this week's will help remind us about what it truly means to be meek. We did a series on peacemakers last year, where we picked the many attributes of a peacemaker, including meekness. And some thoughts might come to your mind like church mouse, or pushover, but on this episode, Shima Baughman explained that meekness is strength! In fact, that was the title of this episode.

Social media designer Anna Owens shares her thoughts on Shima’s episode and how she is working to be more meek by being receptive and teachable.

Deeper Learning: The Sacred Privilege of the Temple Garment with Melinda Brown

Episode 83

mardi 28 mai 2024Duration 57:25

We’ve all noticed an increasing emphasis on covenants and temples! In April general conference the word “covenants” was used 194 times! There were 15 new temples announced, bringing the worldwide count to 350. And the First Presidency updated the temple recommend interview questions and issued a new statement on wearing the temple garment. It feels momentous!

But there hasn’t always been a lot of dialogue around this subject. In this episode, Michelle Torsak, Director of Content for Deseret Book, and podcast producer Sarah Collins have asked Melinda Brown, author and teacher, to join with her expertise. Mindy believes that when we understand the significance and purpose of covenants and the temple garment—the WHY—it makes honoring them a joy. And it gives us language to talk about it with others—especially our children. This conversation promises to expand your view of the temple! It’s a good one!
