Make Your Life Yoga29 Nov 202100:46:53

In the final episode of the fourth season Britt asks Christina to expand upon her recent blog post about her aim not to make her life about yoga, but rather to let her whole life become her yoga. The two discuss time in the studio, on the mat, and in their lives, wonder, and how we can remember to remember our practices within the fullness of life.

An excerpt from the blog "As time went on, I began to see that these inner orientations toward ultimacy, devotion, and what I call Remembrance,  could be brought into my ordinary life in meaningful ways outside of formal settings likes ashrams, yoga studios, and seminars. I learned that these experiences could inform activities beyond asana, mantra,  and meditation such as  dinner parties, mountain biking, hiking, snowboarding, caring for my mom, and dog training.   Instead of yoga becoming my whole life, my whole life could become  my yoga."

You Are Not Everyone's Teacher22 Nov 202101:00:26

In this episode Britt asks Christina to reflect about authenticity within teaching. The two look into the innocent desire a teacher might have to be accepted or liked by their students. They share from their experiences how this desire- conscious or unconscious- can get in the way of authentic teaching and even act as a self-fulfilling prophecy that pushes students away.  They also dive into a conversation about the importance of feedback and how we sometimes must go beyond the binary of attraction and aversion to access greater self awareness and personal growth.

To Draw Forth From Within27 Sep 202100:40:06

In the first episode of season four, Christina and Britt introduce the season's theme: the inner life of the teacher. The two discuss the role of the teacher, as well as a student, as a universal perspective accessible when we consider the unfolding of life as a learning process.  Christina talks about the root of the word education- Educare- as defined by "a drawing forth from within."

The two also discuss the idea of education and invite listeners into a consideration of learning that is broader than the systematic classroom from which so many of us grew up. From the perspective of life as the teacher, this process of drawing forth from within is a co-created experience between student and teacher, between individual and experience, or between soul and source.

In the final episode of season three, Christina and Britt talk about the part of the cycle that brings something to completion. Specifically, they focus on the process of an ending when we might not want that thing to come to an end. They discuss yoga studio closure in the face of a global pandemic and the pieces of ourselves that have changed within that time. The two circle back to the metaphor of the Om cycle and the three distinct parts of that cycle- creation, sustaining, and destruction. Christina considers how oftentimes we do not get to know where we are within the cycle and points to the unknown impact of the Delta variant of Covid-19 and where that places us all within the cycle and spam of this pandemic. Christina also shares a personal experience of loss through death and how this ending in her life continues to change and evolve.

What Do You Reach For?19 Jul 202100:47:33

This week Christina and Britt discuss prayer in its many forms. They dive into a reflective conversation on three distinct modes of prayer as outlined by Anne Lamott: Help, Thanks, and Wow. Christina elucidates on prayer as a transformational practice rather than a transactional exchange. The two share their personal prayer practices outside the realm of organized religion and consider how prayer can help us locate ourselves within the process of healing.  The discussion ends with an invitation to notice how the things we most deeply long for might be illuminated by the process of prayer.

Considering Comparison05 Jan 202400:55:27

Christina and Britt continue their conversation on “the sleeping world” as described in Christina’s book Yoga From the Inside Out.

This week, Britt asks Christina to talk about the human tendency to compare as highlighted by Christina’s longtime student Jeannene in Chapter Three. Christina shares how the age old advise to “not compare yourself” falls short. Rather than eradicating comparison they discuss the nuances of comparison and how it becomes harmful when imbued with feelings of superiority or inferiority.

They also discuss comparison as a mirroring practice that is natural to humans. From this perspective they consider to the importance of diversity such that all types of people see themselves reflected .

The conversation also weaves in themes of aging consciously and how to be compassionate with self when one might fall into the social pressure to hit certain milestones on an externally prescribed timeline.

Britt also shares her own experience with these topics and the two discuss the patterning we inherent from culture and family of origin. Christina reflects on how her perspective has widened in the last 20 years from body image in the terms of beauty to a more intersectional and expansive view of self-care.

The Building of Being with Regina Sara Ryan26 Oct 202001:03:08

Christina, Britt, and Regina Sara Ryan sit down for a conversation wrapped around a conversation of being, aim, death, and practice. They discuss the numinousness of "being-presence" as a quality, the importance of clarity of aim, and how, when we reckon with impermanence, we invite in gratitude and a certain urgency in living. Regina is a prolific writer, author of many books, and Christina's mentor and book editor.

Regina Sara Ryan is an author, editor, writing coach and seminar & retreat leader. A former Catholic nun, Regina has studied contemplation and mysticism throughout her adult life. After leaving the convent in 1971, she explored other religious traditions and was inspired by the lives of the great women of Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism and Sufism who had lived these ways. Since meeting her own spiritual teacher, the Western Baul master Lee Lozowick in 1984 (d. 2010), Regina continues to follow what she calls a path of “unashamed devotion” in which she works to bring her life of contemplation into action. Her books include: Wellness Workbook , co-authored with John W. Travis, M.D.; The Woman Awake: Feminine Wisdom for Spiritual Life; After Surgery, Illness, or Trauma; Praying Dangerously; Only God: A Biography of Yogi Ramsuratkumar; Breastfeeding: Your Priceless Gift to Your Baby and Yourself  and Igniting the Inner Life. Recently widowed, after a 46-year marriage, she lives on her Teacher's ashram in Paulden, Arizona. Regina is currently writing a book on retreat practice, available in Spring 2021, called I Invite My Soul.

A Vision of Inclusion with Jeanine Canty12 Oct 202000:42:20

In an hour of cosmic kismet, professor Jeanine Canty addresses last week's angst and fear from an ecological, academic, and heart-centered lens. Her vision of a judicious future for all people is one of compassion, love, and inclusion. She believes that work of anti-racism, social justice, and climate justice must be situated in love, or it doesn't work. We were inspired by her vision of inclusion, shared suffering, and collective liberation, and hope you are, too.

Faith in Uncertain Times07 Sep 202000:04:13

Before Season 2 launches on September 14, we wanted to give you a taste of the conversations we'll be having. Back in June, when Alex and Britt spoke with Christina about her thoughts for themes for the first season, and the first thing she said - without skipping a beat - was "faith in uncertain times." Enjoy these few minutes of Christina waxing about faith and what "uncertain times" really means to her. See you next week!

In this conversation Christina and Britt dig into Chapter Two from Christina's book Yoga From The Inside Out. Twenty years ago when Christina wrote this book, she introduced the idea of "the sleeping world" as a representation of living life unconsciously or moving through life detached from spiritual belonging. In this conversation Christina reflects on how much more nuanced this idea has become in the year since first writing on it. She reflects on the binary perspective from which she first wrote year ago and how this no longer feels helpful to her. The two discuss the continuous process of living life on purpose and find compassion for the shadowy pieces of self that do not necessarily disappear or change on the spiritual path. Rather, they celebrate how we can learn to care for, tend to, and be responsible for all aspects of oneself as we strive towards conscious, connected lives.
