#58 How I Resolved My Acne Through Diet and Supplementation08 Jan 202301:18:54

Enjoy the podcast? :) Buy me a coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/livedamnwell

––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Acne is the 8th most common disease globally. With a tight link to depression, low self-esteem, and anxiety, it's important to get to the root cause of acne. Acne sucks, but might it actually be a sign from our body telling us there's something wrong? Something which could hold the solution to our facial ailments?

Having struggled with acne for all of my teenage years and my early 20s, I have experimented with every possible nutritional supplement and have finally figured it out.

In this episode I discuss

  • What exactly is and what causes acne?
  • Do hormones––specifically androgens––cause acne?
  • How a 1995 clinical trial led me to resolve my acne by questioning the hormone theory of acne
  • Supplements you have likely never heard of for treating and eliminating acne

Until recently, I never thought the title of this episode could be true. Most of us have heard the common narrative too often: “Eat less meat, save the planet”. But is it actually true? I interviewed Dr. Peter Ballerstedt to find out if meat is a good option if we care about global health.

"Death by a thousand paper cuts". When I heard Dr. Olivia Lesslar use that phrase to describe how most people are affected by the modern lifestyle, I knew I had to work it into the title. Indeed, the the chronic disease epidemic which has resulted from the way most people live their lives does not have one single cause, but rather a multifaceted conglomerate of root causes, and can often be additive.

Dr. Olivia Lesslar, MBBS, is passionate about mobilising patients to take control of their health; focusing on sleep, movement, nutrition, and mindset as the core pillars of their well-being. Olivia provides a comprehensive evaluation of each patient, looking beyond their diagnosis and symptoms, and taking a whole-systems approach, to gain insights into the root cause.

In this episode we discuss

  • A deeper dive into histamine, the benefits of antihistamines, and a shocking danger of chronic antihistamine use
  • Why Dr. Lesslar calls the modern lifestyle "Death by a thousand paper cuts"
  • The problem with abusing antibiotics
  • Why doctors are not the gatekeepers to health and why people should take their health into their own hands

Cancer sucks. If you haven't had cancer you probably know at least one person in your family who has had it or is currently battling it. Unfortunately, it's extremely common. It's estimated that about 2 million people were diagnosed with cancer in 2020. Although the standard treatment has been chemo and radiation, new therapies, such as metabolic therapies, have emerged. Joining me today is Thomas Seyfried, Ph.D., from Boston College, to discuss his work using metabolic nutritional therapies to treat several types of cancer.

In this episode we discuss

  • What is cancer and what nutrients feed cancer?
  • How effective is the standard treatment of cancer using chemotherapy and radiation?
  • Why is a therapeutic ketogenic diet is not enough to starve cancer cells?
  • What would Dr. Seyfreid do if he were diagnosed with cancer?

#33 Return to Human: Take that Out of Your Pocket!10 Sep 202100:18:19

No, 5G does not cause COVID. But that doesn't negate the existence of true, scientific concerns with this technology (and previous generations of wireless radiation). In fact, a major multimillion dollar study by the National Toxicology Program found that wireless radiation caused certain tumors. Since, then the World Health Organization has recognized 1-10% of individuals as electrohypersensitive, meaning they show blatantly adverse negative effects from these frequencies.

This episode is a chapter of my book Return to Human, where I outline the true scientific concerns with wireless technology, how it impacts our physiology, and how to mitigate the effects using nutrition and other lifestyle habits.

#32 Useless vs Useful Probiotics, Gut Health, and Immunity with Dr. Tom Bayne27 Aug 202101:18:17

In recent years, the popularity of probiotics has skyrocketed alongside the growing interest in the gut microbiome. But do probiotics live up to the hype?

The short answer is, most don't. Some probiotics boast billions of CFUs, while others brag about the sheer quantity of different species contained within. The truth is, more is NOT better. In addition, most of these probiotics do not even make it to your large and small intestines and are instead destroyed by your stomach acid, rendering them virtually useless. Joining me today is Dr. Tom Bayne, President of Microbiome Labs, to speak all about a revolutionary new type of probiotic which seems to bypass many of these concerns

In this episode we discuss

- The problem with most probiotics on the market

- Why a good probiotic does NOT have to be refrigerated

- How the composition of your gut microbiome can influence the severity of CV-19

- What must an effective probiotic be able to address?

- Hippocrates was right––most diseases do begin in the gut, from autoimmune issues, neuropsychiatric disorders to metabolic health

#27 Athletic Performance, Animal-Based Diets, and Gut Microbiome Myths, with Dr. Tommy Wood25 Jun 202101:14:55

You hear it all the time: eat more fiber. Plants are good. Meat is bad and so are all animal products always. Baby talk pervades the world of nutrition. The truth is, the science is far from settled. With today's guest, I discuss both sides of the story in an attempt to cut through the black-or-white, dogmatic thinking which plagues nutrition science.

My guest today is Dr. Tommy Wood, a UK-trained Medical Doctor with a PhD in physiology and neuroscience. Dr. Wood is currently at the University of Washington as a Research Assistant Professor of Pediatrics. He has also published and spoken on multiple topics surrounding functional and ancestral approaches to health, including examining the root causes of multiple sclerosis and insulin resistance.

Shownotes at: https://livedamnwell.com/tommywood/

In this episode we cover

  • What are some of the biggest health hurdles for athletes in improving their athletic performance?
  • How tracking sleep and glucose monitoring (CGMs) can in itself can be harmful to our health
  • The problem with nutritional studies. In other words why the heck is nutrition so confusing and why do so many experts claim wildly different things?
  • What does a healthy microbiome even mean? Do the experts even know?
  • Does the nutritional scientific literature fully support the idea that Fiber is essential in the human diet? If not, what else can the gut use as fuel?
  • Why a high-fat, animal based diet is being studied for its health effects
  • Why neither vegans nor carnivores have the full truth

#26 Nutrigenomics, Terrain Theory, and Oxidative Stress with Bob Miller18 Jun 202101:34:08

Everything in moderation... We hear it so often, that most people have accepted it as true, especially in the field of nutrition. The problem is that this slogan only works... until it doesn't. In this episode, my guest and I discuss an emerging field of science known as nutrigenomics, or genetic-specific nutrition, which can allow us to use our genetic information to inform our dietary choices for better brain health, digestion, and lower inflammation, hopefully allowing us to break free of the "everything in moderation" slogan.

Shownotes at: https://livedamnwell.com/nutrigenomics/

My guest today is Bob Miller, a Traditional Naturopath specializing in the field of genetic-specific nutrition. He earned his traditional naturopathic degree from Trinity School of Natural Health and is board certified through the ANMA. In 1993, he opened the Tree of Life practice and he has served as a traditional naturopath for 27 years. For the past several years, he has been engaged exclusively with functional nutritional genetic variants and related research, specializing in nutritional support for those with chronic Lyme disease.

In this episode we cover

  • What Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) are, how they influence our health, and how we can use them to inform our dietary choices
  • What oxidative stress is and why it's at the core of most chronic diseases
  • How our genes influence our ability to process and eliminate plant antinutrients, handle fermented foods, and convert vitamins into their active forms
  • Why bone broth may lower inflammation in one person but increase it in another
  • What glutathione is and why it's crucial to our ability to fight infections and fight inflammation

#25 COVID-19, Russian Roulette and Realigning the Spine to Cure Disease with Dr. Aaron Tressler11 Jun 202101:07:01

My guest today is Dr. Aaron Tressler, doctor of Chiropractic, Owner of In8Life, President of the Chiropractic Fellowship of Pennsylvania, author, and podcast host. Dr. Tressler's passion for natural health and healing extends back to childhood. Growing up, he suffered with chronic gastrointestinal issues, allergies and sinus problems. His struggles through sports injuries and back pain led him to his first chiropractic experience his senior year at Greensburg Salem High School. And then witnessing his father die from heart disease at age 50, he vowed to never allow this to happen to him and was determined to find an answer. Chiropractic care not only corrected his pain, but also his sickness, and he knew if it could change his life, it would also change the life of thousands of others.

In this episode, we cover:

  • How dysfunction of the nervous system is connected to the gastrointestinal (GI) system, digestion, and more
  • Why "boosting" your immune system is the wrong way of going about long term health
  • Why Dr. Tressler believes in our "innate" ability to heal from many diseases
  • Why a severe case of COVID-19 may not be Russian Roulette. Although genetics can play a role in risk of developing severe COVID-19, we might not be looking at ALL of the lifestyle risk factors combined, such as sleep, stress, micronutrient status, metabolic health, and environmental toxins. According to the CDC, 94% of COVID-19 deaths had at least one underlying health condition, many of which are lifestyle based

#24 Jungle Talks: How to use Light to Sleep Better, Boost Mood, and Strengthen Immunity04 Jun 202100:24:35

Diet. Exercise. And... That's pretty much it.

Unfortunately, the mainstream view of health is often limited by nutrition and fitness.

While those two are without a doubt important, there's much more to health than how much you move and how much you put in your mouth.

In this Jungle Talk, I talk about the health effects of light exposure, a forgotten pillar of health.

In this episode, I discuss:

  • How light causes cancer––but likely not in the way you're thinking
  • How different frequencies of light have different effects on health
  • How sunlight is a major control center of our immune health and circadian rhythm and how to reap the full benefits of the sunlight safely
  • Using artificial light to simulate the light our hunter gatherer ancestors were exposed to

#23 A Root Cause Solution to Fixing Your Sleep by Fixing Your Gut With Dr. Stasha Gominak28 May 202101:52:06

Do you struggle to sleep? You're not alone. In fact, 35-40% of Americans struggle with their sleep. The usual quick fix? Popping melatonin and sleep pills––and subsequently becoming dependent on them to sleep at all! My guest presents a totally novel, root-cause approach to enhancing deep sleep by targeting the gut microbiome.

Dr. Stasha Gominak is a neurologist and researcher who was the first to explain the link between vitamin D deficiency, sleep disorders and the abnormal intestinal microbiome. She is also the creator of the RightSleep® technique, a simple and safe protocol to reinstate a normal microbiome and to improve all sleep disorders

Check out the shownotes at: livedamnwell.com/deepsleep

In this episode we cover

  • The different stages of sleep and why sleep is so important for every aspect of health
  • Why getting 10 hours of sleep doesn't matter, if you aren't going into Deep Sleep
  • How raising vitamin D levels can improve sleep in the short term but set you up for a B vitamin deficiency
  • What "sleep switches" are
  • How vitamin D, the B vitamins, the gut microbiome affect your sleep
  • Dr. Gominak's protocol to recover deep sleep

#22 Jungle Talks: How to Climb Trees and Swing a Machete at 93 Years Old21 May 202100:31:17

Are you looking forward to growing old?

For most people, I can imagine the answer is likely a resounding no. In fact, only around 40% of Americans are looking forward to old age (https://www.statista.com/chart/17019/looking-forward-to-old-age/).

I was recently in Costa Rica (thus "Jungle Talks"), where I met a pretty remarkable man who made me look forward to old age. Why? Well, I was close to Nicoya which is a well known Blue Zone––a hotspot of longevity, with a disproportionate amount of healthy centenarians. Though this humble cacao farmer I met doesn't technically qualify as a centenarian (he's 93 years old), he's pretty damn close.

As a friend and I stepped onto his property, a frail-looking, fairly short elderly man greeted us with a machete in hand. I immediately saw that he was mentally sharp, as he cracked joke after joke with an aliveness in his voice which is often absent from elderly people.

Though his age in itself is impressive, his physical health was equally, if not more impressive. So naturally, we asked him his secrets to a long, healthy, and fulfilling life.

For scientific references and resources check out the shownotes at: https://livedamnwell.com/defy-aging

In this episode I cover:

  • What this Costa Rican man does to support his longevity from diet and sleep to mindset and community
  • What the long-lived Blue Zone populations have in common
  • Why a rice and beans diet isn't the be all end all
  • How emotions influence gene expression
  • What does the scientific research say about anti-aging and longevity practices?

#21 A Nutrient-dense Superfood for Immunity, Heart Health, and Inflammation with Catharine Arnston14 May 202100:58:49

We often hear the word superfood thrown around, whether or not it actually is "super" (kale, I'm looking at you).

In today's episode, my guest Catharine Arnston, CEO of EnergyBits and speaker, sheds light on a little known food which I believe does indeed deserve the title of superfood. Packed with B vitamins, vitamin A, iron, and chlorophyll, chlorella and spirulina are two amazing plant foods which are some of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet, other than organ meats of course.

After Catharine's sister was diagnosed with cancer, Catharine searched for dietary interventions to help strengthen her sister's immune system while she underwent chemo (she's now fully recovered). Through her intensive deep dive into the scientific literature, she came across two foods endorsed by the United Nations and NASA as the most nutrient-dense foods. Years later she founded EnergyBits, a third party tested, sustainable, organic, and carbon-negative company which sought to make algae available to as many people as possible.

So, regardless of whether you're Paleo, Keto, Vegan, or still following the Standard American Diet (SAD), these two types of algae can be very beneficial for anyone looking to upgrade their nutrition, athletic performance, sleep, and immunity.

In this episode we cover

- A battle with cancer and Catharine's search for a nutritional intervention

- Why the United Nations and NASA endorse spirulina and chlorella as the most nutrient-dense foods and the answer to world hunger

- Why most Americans are NOT getting the micronutrients we used to get from food just a few decades ago...

- How Spirulina and Chlorella are being studied as a nutritional strategy to lessen severe cases of COVID-19 and treat patients

- How EnergyBits Spirulina and Chlorella can fit into nearly anyone's lifestyle to improve their health

#20 A Powerful Japanese Therapy to Support Immune Health and Reduce Stress Naturally with Dr. Bartlett Hackenmiller07 May 202100:53:14

A Japanese therapy developed in the 1980s... It significantly boosts your immune system. It's used to treat anxiety and depression. It's anticancer. The best part is––it's 100% free. What am I talking about? Forest Bathing. And no, it probably doesn't mean what you think it means.

My guest today is Dr. Bartlett Hackenmiller, board-certified physician in integrative medicine and obstetrics and gynecology and author of The Outdoor Adventurer's Guide to Forest Bathing. Dr. Hackenmiller speaks speaks nationally and internationally on the subject of autism, cancer, integrative medicine and nature therapy, emphasizing the powerful science-backed benefits of connecting with nature to reduce stress, improve mental health, and as a much-needed antidote to our busy, stress-ridden modern world.

In this episode we cover

  • What is Shinrin Yoku and how––as an OBGYN––Dr. Bartlett Hackenmiller first stumbled upon it
  • What are Phytoncides and how do they improve our health?
  • How spending time in nature upregulates Natural killer cell activity––the cells responsible for anticancer regulation
  • How you can implement "Forest Bathing" into your life

#19 What does it Mean to Eat Like a Human with Dr. Bill Schindler26 Feb 202101:10:53

Looking into the past gives us a lens through which to view our present, especially in terms of what humans "should" be eating as a species. But looking into the past is not a panacea––in other words, it's not as simple as: let's just eat what our Paleolithic ancestors ate. Dr. Schindler joins me on the podcast to discuss two critical questions to ask ourselves: What foods were we designed to obtain? What foods were we designed to digest?

Dr. Bill Schindler is the founder and director of the Eastern Shore Food Lab, an Associate Professor of Anthropology and Archaeology at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland and the costar of the National Geographic series, The Great Human Race, Curiosity Stream’s, The Modern Stone Age Family and Wired Magazine’s series, Basic Instinct and Food Science. He is a food archaeologist, primitive technologist and chef. Bill travels the world documenting traditional food ways and works to draw inspiration from the deep archaeological record, diverse ethnographic record, and modern culinary world to create food solutions that are relevant, meaningful, and accessible today. His work specifically focuses on HOW we should eat instead of simply the type of food we should eat for optimal health. Bill is a strong advocate of traditional foodways and is constantly seeking new ways to incorporate lessons learned from his research into the diets of modern humans including his own family. Bill resides with his wife and three teenaged children in Maryland.

#17 How Listening to "The Science" Has Led to A Chronic Disease Epidemic with Brian Sanders (Part 1)12 Feb 202100:30:36

Fat is bad. Grains are good. Meat is bad. Plants are good. Science is science––it's pretty clear cut and we should never question its validity... right? In this interview Brian Sanders and I discuss the problems with blindly following what we refer to as "The Science", especially as it relates to nutrition, the vilification of animal foods, and the pandemic.

Brian Sanders is the filmmaker behind the feature-length documentary Food Lies and host of the Peak Human podcast. He graduated from UCLA with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and then turned to technology and sold an app company. He’s used his technical background and love for fitness & nutrition to also work as a Health Coach and be the co-founder of the health, media, and technology company SAPIEN.

In part 1 we cover:

- Why you should be ultimately skeptical of what Brian and I refer to as "ThE SciEnCe"

- Why you should always seek out dissenting opinions, and why news reporting has come to be so biased regarding nutrition, the pandemic, and science in general

- How animal foods and fats came to be vilified

- How anthropological research shows that humans aren't really progressing, with thinner skulls, underdeveloped jaws, and skyrocketing chronic disease etc.

#15 Bridging the Gap Between Health and Wealth with Krisstina Wise29 Jan 202101:11:36

What does a coffee-addicted CEO, an overworked medical professional, and your average middle class parent all have in common? They're likely all working for money at the expense of their health.

From the time we go to elementary school to the time we graduate college, we're heavily indoctrinated with the idea that if you hope to have any life at all, you must slave yourself to the system: get good grades, go to college for a degree you don't know you want (and you probably won't use), pay off student loans until you're 40 years old, and work long hours for a reliable biweekly paycheck... up until your 60s when you get to retire. And the little time you have left on this planet will be spent frugally... Inspiring, isn't it?

Today, I'm excited to share an insightful episode I had with Krisstina Wise, financial health coach, real estate mogul, and owner of several multi-million dollar businesses. After nearly losing her life in 2013 and spending almost half a million dollars to recover, her mission is now to inspire others to build extraordinary wealth and optimal health.

Shownotes at https://livedamnwell.com/wealth

––––––––––––––––––––––––––

In this episode we cover:

  • Why health and wealth seem to be in direct opposition to each other––you're either getting healthy or you're getting rich
  • To college or not to college? Alternatives to the mainstream path of college
  • Money mindset: how to rid yourself of the limiting beliefs surrounding money (which you probably got from your parents)
  • The difference between getting rich and becoming wealthy and why you should focus on the latter
  • Simple steps to start building wealth for generations to come

#14 A Pandemic of Inactivity: Intermittent and Corrective Exercise with Matt Peale22 Jan 202100:37:24

Gyms are closed. Netflix is booming. With more people stuck at home than ever before, being sedentary has never been so easy. Not only does inactivity promote many chronic diseases, but it can also promote migraines, joint pain, and body-wide stiffness. Clearly, not everybody has time for a daily one hour workout, so is all hope lost?

Matt Peale, author of The Athlete in the Game of Life and Corrective Exercise Specialist, joins me in this episode to shed light on the solutions.

––––––––––––––––––––––––––

In this episode, we cover

  • Intermittent exercise––which may be better than just one hour of grueling exercise
  • The effects of being sedentary on musculoskeletal, metabolical, and cardiovascular health
  • How tightness in one area of the body can affect a muscle up/downstream and can even cause migraines
  • Corrective exercises and tips to hack the stiffness caused by the all-too-common 9 to 5 inactivity

#13 Why Happiness Is NOT Effortless: A New Approach to Being Happy with Dr. Loretta Breuning15 Jan 202101:06:21

Since the time we were children we’re told to just be happy. Simple, right? After learning mammalian brain chemistry and some evolutionary biology my guest today started to understand why happiness is so widely misunderstood. Dr. Loretta Breuning, Founder of the Inner Mammal Institute, author of Habits of a Happy Brain, and Professor Emerita of Management at California State University, East Bay, takes a very unconventional approach to the problem of “being happy”.

In this episode, we cover

  • Why the idea of reaching happiness is totally flawed
  • The four "happy chemicals" in our body
  • How evolutionary biology can help you understand your motivation
  • How to tap into our happy chemicals in the modern world

#12 The Biophysics of Water: How Deuterium Can Lead to Disease with Dr. Joel Gould08 Jan 202101:13:44

We drink it every day. We're likely not even aware it exists, yet it is essential for our growth and development. However, there's a dark side to this molecule commonly found in water. An overabundance has been linked to premature aging, metabolic problems, and disease.

My guest today is a repeat guest on the podcast (check out the episode we did on vitamin D) : Dr. Joel Gould, a Canadian dentist with over 30 years of experience in the US and Canada. After struggling with Crohn’s Disease for most of his life and being told by doctors there was simply nothing he could do, he slowly stumbled across the solutions. Since then, Dr. Gould successfully reversed Crohn’s disease and now works to raise awareness for ancestral living in a modern world through his platform Modern Hunter Gatherers.

––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Shownotes at: https://livedamnwell.com/gould2/

In this episode, we cover

  • What deuterium is and why a buildup of it is associated with diseases such as cancer
  • Which foods are rich in deuterium
  • The connection between the latitude a food grows in and deuterium
  • How your body naturally depletes itself of deuterium

#11 The Fourth Phase of Water: Why the Type of Water in Your Body is Central to Our Health with Dr. Gerald Pollack01 Jan 202101:27:51

The majority of our cells are filled with this life-giving stuff, yet most high school or even college biology classes spend less than ONE class period studying it. All we learn is gas, solid, liquid––the three phases of water... right? Nope. My guest today, Dr. Gerald Pollack, Professor of bioengineering at the University of Washington, reveals a FOURTH phase of water which is intimately tied to our health. Spoiler alert––water does much more than just take up space.

Dr. Pollack’s research is centered around the most important building block of life––water. As a result of his research, Dr. Pollack authored “The Fourth Phase of Water: Beyond Solid, Liquid, and Vapor”. He is founding editor-in-chief of the journal, WATER, executive director of the Institute for Venture Science, 2015 recipient of the Brandlaureate Award, and 2016 winner of the first international Emoto Peace Prize.

––––––––––––––––––––––––––

In this episode, we cover

  • What structured water, EZ water, and the fourth phase of water are
  • Why this type of water is fundamental to our health, despite barely being mentioned in a biology textbook
  • Why ATP may not actually be the main/only energy currency in the body
  • Which toxins and substances in our environment prevent our body from making structured water
  • How to increase the amount of structured water in your body through simple diet and lifestyle practices to promote health

In this episode, my friend and cohost, Ben, and I interview Dr. Michael Silverman, the Chairman of Internal Medicine at Howard County General Hospital. He has practiced Cardiovascular Medicine through Johns Hopkins since 1994 and is a Board-Certified physician. Dr. Silverman has special interests in echocardiography and nuclear cardiology as well as cardiovascular disease in athletes. He is especially interested in endurance athletes and has personally competed in three Ironman Triathlons.

We cover:

- The dichotomy between looking good/exercise performance and health (which we also cover in episode #1)

- How chronic overexercising can actually lead to plaque formation in arteries and deform the heart

- The problem with the food industry and why it prioritizes profit over your health

- What has led to a chronic disease epidemic?

#9 The Gut Microbiome, Inflammation, and Immunity with Dr. Marvin Singh11 Dec 202001:05:54

The gut is closely tied to our immune system. The way our immune system functions is directly tied to how we respond to bacterial infections and viruses like COVID-19. This begs the question: how can we positively impact our microbiome to foster a proper immune response?

In this episode, I interview Dr. Marvin Singh, a board certified physician in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, and Integrative Medicine. He was previously a Clinical Assistant Professor at UCLA and was also an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Associate Director of Gastroenterology at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Singh shares his knowledge about the microbiome and how it relates to our immune health!
