ON TODAY'S EPISODE: Have you been relating to my content about Metabolic Hypoglycemia? Do you have blood sugar or energy crashes? Do you feel like you don't tolerate "normal things" like exercise, heat, avoiding snacking, etc.
If so, this episode will give you loads of tools to help you reduce stress on your body. A lot of healthy habits are actually stressors (more specifically: hormetic stressors which means that you stress the body just enough so it adapts and gets stronger).
We wouldn't encourage someone to go for a jog if they had a sprained ankle, because obviously that stress would make the already weakened ankle worse! This is the same concept. We can't be stressing the body if it's going to make things worse... if the body is to weakened, we need to take stress OFF the body so that it can develop more resilience.
In this episode, I'm going to share some common things that stress the body (these might surprise you!) and how to avoid, or swap out these habits with ones that are more soothing and restoring.

TODAY'S EPISODE: Today's episode is a solo episode (haven't done one of these in a while!!) I started hearing the term "Metabolic Syndrome" more and more often and I thought to myself.... "What the heck is Metabolic Syndrome?!"
I thought I probably wasn't the only person who didn't know what that meant. And since over 88% of the population, according to a new study, is "metabolically unhealthy", I thought I should learn what it meant.
Well, I looked it up and guess what?! Metabolic Syndrome used to be known as INSULIN RESISTANCE SYNDROME!! 🤯
WHY on Earth is mainstream medicine avoiding using the term INSULIN RESISTANCE when that's exactly what's happening.
WHY are they NOT using a test of insulin in the criteria to determine if you have Insulin Resistance Syndrome?!?!?
In this episode, I talk about what the criteria for Insulin Resistance Syndrome is, what is being missed by using this criteria, what marker is the first to go out of range and why it's so important to test this specific marker.
I also talk about what insulin resistance is, the EARLY signs of Insulin Resistance, that this metric is missing. And finally, I talk about how to improve blood sugar and insulin sensitivity.
I hope you find this episode and information valuable!!

TODAY'S GUEST:
Dr. Elin Östman is an expert on the preventive potential of food in relation to metabolic syndrome, with special emphasis on blood glucose and appetite regulation. Dr. Elin is the Chief Scientist of GOOD IDEA, Inc.
Before GOOD IDEA, Dr. Elin was an associate professor and senior lecturer in Applied Nutrition at the Food for Health Science Centre of Lund University in southern Sweden. Her 20-year career in academia comprises groundbreaking research on preventive food concepts and healthy diets to reduce lifestyle and diet-related conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
To date, Dr. Elin has been a co-author of 49 peer-reviewed original articles and 3 reviews. She is a frequent speaker at international conferences and events in the field of nutrition and food science, and the co-founder of four food innovation-related start-up companies.
In 2001, Dr. Elin published a paper establishing the connection between the intake of various milk products and surprisingly high insulin responses. Later on, her research group found that intake of whey before and with a meal rich in fast carbohydrates could substantially lower the blood sugar spike following a meal, similar to the “milk mechanism”. The presence of five specific essential amino acids appeared to be significant. An idea of effective blood glucose regulating food products was born, and a joint product development project was initiated with Food & Biotech company Aventure AB.
When Dr. Elin and her colleagues at the Anti-diabetic Food Center isolated the five amino acids and added a small proportion of chromium, well known for its role in blood sugar regulation, the results were significant.
“Our first clinical study showed that the blend dissolved in water, taken before and with a carb-rich meal could reduce the post-meal blood sugar spike by 20-30%”, says Dr. Elin. “Repeated clinical studies confirmed the results, and we started working on a product that could help the body handle blood sugar spikes in a more efficient way.”
Years of studies, product development, tasting panels, etc. later, Good Idea® is now available on the US market, and it has been very well received by both the professional health community and consumers.
ON TODAY'S EPISODE:
Dr. Elin and I talk about: How measuring glucose and insulin levels can help you understand how it affects your body.
How measuring glucose and insulin levels can help you understand how it affects your body
The importance of the structure of foods for your glucose levels
How different types of bread affect blood sugar levels
Ways to increase bioavailability in food
Why regulating insulin is better for digestion
Foods to eat for a better blood sugar response and foods to avoid

Blood sugar crashes in the normal range? It could be Metabolic Hypoglycemia | Episode 197
13 Jul 2024
00:46:54
In this episode I dive into why so many people I see are struggling with blood sugar crashes that may be in the normal or even high range. Often this is driven by a lack of metabolic flexibility which means the inability or decreased ability to burn stored energy like sugar in our liver, or body fat, as fuel. I talk about the different hormones at play when it comes to metabolic hypoglycemia which is a new term I’ve coined to help explain this confusing and often debilitating condition.

The sponsor for today's show is RASA! Rasa coffee alternative is a delicious, healthy coffee substitute made from adaptogenic herbs. Coffee steals energy from tomorrow to use today. Drinking coffee doesn't actually GIVE us energy. It's just borrowed. This is why I love RASA. The adaptogenic herbs in these blends actually support and boost your body's adrenal glands helping to restore your body's natural energy. They also help boost your body's resiliency to stress as well.
You can brew these coffee alternatives in a french press for 10-15 minutes. You can have them any time of the day or in place of coffee for an extra boost and increase in mental clarity and alertness. Personally I find that if I consume RASA every day, my overall daily energy improves, my sleep improves, and so many of my clients who have blood sugar crashes REALLY see improvement with their blood sugar levels when having RASA on a regular basis.
My personal favorite is the Cacao and I love mixing it with some full fat coconut milk. I also recently tried the Joy tonic and I'm obsessed!

The episode was inspired by a message I got on Instagram from a girl who told me that she went from a Standard American Diet (SAD) to a very low carb ketogenic diet and 3 days later ended up hospitalized.
I realized that there's so much info out there on Keto but not enough about what to do to PREPARE yourself to go keto.
This is nothing to be afraid of because it's easily avoided but it is something to educate yourself on! This episode will give you a BUNCH of things to know and do before you go keto to help prep your body for ketosis so there is a much easier transition and you won't land in the hospital!
Hope you enjoy the show! If you're already in ketosis and have been for a while, please share this show with a keto-curious friend!

Here are the questions that I answer on today's show:
Why is it important to be a fat burner instead of sugar burner? Are some people naturally one or the other?
What are signs that you can’t burn body fat for fuel?
So how do you switch from sugar burning to fat burning - is it just through diet or are there other lifestyle things you can do?
People think that they need to eat every few hours. but you recommend not to snack in order to shift into fat burning, can you explain why this is important?
I know you recommend the keto diet when trying to switch over, so what would you say to someone who is vegetarian or resistant to going very high fat?
What do you say to those who say “but I will never be able to reduce my sweets; every time I try removing them, I’m craving them even more”
What would you say to someone who would say “fats are high in calories?”
