S1 BONUS: Food and Marriage with Chris and Tony Price

Season 1 · Episode 11

mercredi 1 juin 2022Duration 50:59

This week's special bonus episode of Life in Food with Laura Price is a bit of a change from the norm because I've interviewed my very own parents, Chris and Tony Price, who are celebrating 50 years of marriage in 2022. I credit my parents for leading me to my love of food, but I've never really explored where their own love of food comes from, so I wanted to quiz them about their own parents, the foods they ate growing up and how they went from a young couple who never ate out to regular restaurant goers and world travellers. In the episode, we talk about growing up with ration books, sharing a love of Fry's Chocolate Cream bars, and the secret to a long and happy marriage.

Chris and Tony Price's restaurant recommendations:

In the latest episode of Life in Food with Laura Price, I speak to Clover Stroud, the Sunday Times bestselling author of The Red of My Blood: A Death and Life Story, where she writes about her experience of walking through the first year after her sister's death from breast cancer. In the episode, Clover speaks movingly about the horse-riding accident that left her mother severely disabled when Clover was a teenager, and how that experience changed her family life and her relationship with her sister Nell. She talks about the death of both her mother and Nell, relating it to family food memories of home-cooked lasagne, roll-mop herrings and fish chowder. Finally, we also talk about Dame Deborah James and why it's important to encourage healthy conversation around death.

Season 1 · Episode 9

mercredi 18 mai 2022Duration 50:22

In the latest episode of Life in Food with Laura Price, I speak to Ana Ros, chef-owner of Hisa Franko restaurant in the beautiful Soca Valley, Slovenia. Ana was named The World’s Best Female Chef in 2017 and Hisa Franko is a regular on The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list. But beyond the accolades, Ana is a hard-working mother of two, struggling with the same issues every mother experiences. In the episode, we talk about anorexia and baby loss, encouraging her children to try new foods and experiencing guilt as a working mum.

About Ana Ros:

Ana became a chef by accident, taking over her then-husband Valter’s restaurant when her father-in-law retired. That meant turning down a job as a diplomat in Brussels, which led her own father to stop talking to her. Since then, Ana has starred in her own episode of the brilliant Chef’s Table documentary on Netflix and has won countless accolades. In 2020, she published her beautiful memoir, Sun and Rain, featuring recipes alongside moving stories on everything from losing a baby to suffering from anorexia, and overcoming family pressure to follow a different career path.

In the latest episode of Life in Food with Laura Price, I speak to Sian-Meades Williams, founder of the Freelance Writing Jobs newsletter and author of the new non-fiction book The Pyjama Myth: The Freelance Writer's Survival Guide. Like me, Sian is a food-obsessed freelancer who tailors her life around meals and spends an inordinate amount of time 'peruse bouching' (that's Sian's term for menu-browsing), so we had much to discuss. In the episode, we talk about everything from figuring out what success looks like as a freelancer to banana sandwiches, original Hula Hoops and 'happy soup'. This is a worthwhile listen not just for the self-employed, but for anyone grappling with working from home or simply trying to discover what they want from life.

Sian is an award-winning journalist and author of several books including The Pyjama Myth and The Feminist Quiz Book. She is the editor of the weekly media industry newsletter Freelance Writing Jobs, and in 2021 she launched the Freelance Writing Awards.

S1 E7 Food and Friendship with Nikki May

Season 1 · Episode 7

mercredi 4 mai 2022Duration 35:02

In the latest episode of Life in Food with Laura Price, I speak to Nikki May, author of the brilliant novel Wahala, a darkly comic and bitingly subversive take on love, race and family featuring three British-Nigerian girlfriends who live in London. Inspired by a meal with Nikki's own girlfriends, the book weaves food through every chapter, so I was keen to talk to her about her love of food and how it reflects her British-Nigerian identity. In the episode, we talk about the power of food in friendship, the underrepresentation of Nigerian cuisine and how Nikki plans to be an extra in the upcoming TV adaptation of her book.

About Nikki May:

Nikki was born in Bristol and raised in Lagos until the age of 20, when she dropped out of medical school and moved to London. She began a career in advertising before going on to run a successful agency, and went on to write Wahala, which is now being adapted into major TV serial by the BBC.

S1 E5 Food and Fertility with Kat Brown

Season 1 · Episode 5

mercredi 20 avril 2022Duration 01:00:49

In the latest episode of Life in Food with Laura Price, I speak to journalist Kat Brown about Food and Fertility. In 2020, after two rounds of IVF and several years trying for a baby, Kat was told she was unlikely to ever have a biological child of her own. She decided to channel her grief into No One Talks About This Stuff, a collection of essays from 15 writers on their experience of infertility, childlessness, baby loss and almost-motherhood, to be published in 2023 by Unbound. Our discussion covers everything from Kat's diagnosis of ADHD and a binge eating disorder to finding comfort in mashed potato and M&S trifle.
