The Millennial Decorator On The Business of The Perfect Flat Lay, Sourcing Vintage Shoes, and Creating a Job in Fashion That Doesn't Exist

Episode 243

lundi 26 août 2024Duration 39:09

If you've lined up at TSA and felt tempted to take a picture of your shoes and bag in the TSA bin, chances are you've been influenced by The Millennial Decorator. Run by curator Julia Rabinowitsch, the account has become a cult-favorite for its swoon-worthy flat lays of Instagram favorites - from Chanel ballet flats to Cartier watches. Through her social media success, she now sells a selection of vintage shoes on her site, and has worked on campaigns for the likes of Rhode, Summer Friday's, and more. In today's episode, we talk about carving out a unique career for yourself based on what you love, the hottest vintage shoes right now and where to find them, and why she thinks we're all obsessed with a good flat lay.

Sydney Carlson On Matching Her Looks To Her Recipes, Where She Shops, and Starting A Cookware Line

Episode 242

lundi 19 août 2024Duration 37:18

Not a day goes by that I'm not influenced by Sydney Carlson in some way - whether I'm using a Wildflower iPhone Case (a brand she co-founded with her sister Devon Lee Carlson), saving her Instagram posts because of her amazing style, or trying one of her infamous cooking recipes. In today's episode, we chat all about her pivot to at-home chef, how she matches her recipes to her outfits (and where she's getting these outfits that are equally as savabale as the recipes themselves), and the launch of her newest kitchenware line, Lynne.

J.Crew's Olympia Gayot on Prep Fashion, Going From Design Director to Creative Director, and Bringing J.Crew Back To Life

Episode 233

lundi 17 juin 2024Duration 33:02

Today we're joined by my ultimate Instagram girl crush, the woman behind America's favorite brand, Olympia Gayot. As the Creative Director and Head of Design for J.Crew Women and CrewCuts, Olympia's vision has propelled the brand as a viral sensation, blending the nostalgia of past J.Crew imagery with modern styles. Her personal style is also killer and is a frequent save on my own account. In this episode, Olympia shares how she went from Designer Director to a Vice President, where she gets inspiration as a Creative Director, and I ask the burning question... is prep dead?

Want A Job In Fashion? Meet The Industry's Top Buyer, Tiffany Hsu, VP of Buying At Mytheresa

Episode 143

lundi 12 septembre 2022Duration 34:34

If you’re not in fashion, Fashion Month can seem a bit overwhelming. I often get asked - can I buy that look right now? When will that style be available? Or why didn’t that runway piece make it to stores? Well, there’s a big business behind runway shows - it fuels the fashion industry forward, sets trends for the seasons ahead, and allows fashion buyers to decide what makes it from the runway to our closets. So today we’re answering all of your questions with one of the best buyers in the industry, Tiffany Hsu, who’s the Vice President of Womenswear and Kidswear Buying at Mytheresa. (If you follow me on IG, you know Mytheresa is my ultimate retailer of choice - there’s just no better buy if you’re looking for the best pieces in fashion!). As a buyer, she’s tasked with traveling the world and looking at every designer’s collection, understanding the Mytheresa customer intimately, and knowing exactly what styles and how much of them to buy so that retailers and designers make a profit when it hits the stores six months later. She’s basically a fashion psychic. However, buying is a big numbers game, so for all my listeners looking for a numbers based job in fashion, listen up! In this episode, Tiffany and I talk about what goes on behind the scenes during fashion week, how she's learned what her clients want, and the trends she’s loving right now.   Follow Tiffany here https://www.instagram.com/handinfire/   Shop Mytheresa here www.mytheresa.com    Sponsors

Inside Danielle Prescod’s First Book, Token Black Girl

Episode 141

lundi 22 août 2022Duration 36:06

I often talk about the necessity for community. No matter what you do, where you work, finding your people and keeping them close is one of the most important lessons I’ve learned as someone in the fashion industry. One of my people is Danielle Prescod. She instantly became someone who felt like a security blanket for me - at a work event where maybe I didn’t know anyone, fashion weeks, whatever it was, if she was there, all was good in my world. Danielle is a 15-year fashion industry veteran - she’s worked at InStyle, Elle, BET, and is someone I often turn to for her razor-sharp and unapologetic perspective of the industry. But last year, she said goodbye to the fashion industry and moved to New Orleans where she penned her first book, Token Black Girl, a memoir about her experiences growing up Black in a predominately white neighborhood, and the experiences that followed her into her teen years, college years, and into the halls of some of the most well known magazines in the world. It’s a harsh look into the white supremacy in media and her personal story of recovering from years of striving for perfection, a loss of identity, and living in a world where she never truly felt accepted. In today’s episode, we talk about the moments that led Danielle to write Token Black Girl, how she turned her experiences into output, and how the fashion industry needs to do better.   Follow Danielle here https://www.instagram.com/danielleprescod/   Pre-order Token Black Girl here    Produced by Dear Media   This episode may contain paid endorsements and advertisements for products and services. Your Best Hair Starts Here with Crown Affair’s Dianna Cohen

Episode 140

lundi 15 août 2022Duration 44:05

I’ll never forget the first time I saw a Pantene ad. The silky, luscious, and thick hair on the models couldn’t be more different from my own hair, but instantly became an ideal of what society considered beautiful. It carried me through the many emotional stages of my hair - extensions, the post breakup chop, multiple colors (who can relate?) - all to achieve that bounce that could be seen from a mile away. But as a now 28-year-old, I've figured out the most essential truth when it comes to hair - less is more. Diana Cohen’s Crown Affair is leading that message, disrupting the haircare industry that has notoriously sold chemical-based products and damaging styles with simple products, clean ingredients, and routines and rituals that nourish your hair from within. The Crown Affair Hair Oil has landed on every best-seller list, even catching the eye of the brand's newest investor Gwyneth Paltrow, and the brand is a bestseller at Goop and Sephora. In this episode, Diana shares her experience navigating the haircare industry, her own routines, and how she’s built a community around self-care.    Shop Crown Affair here https://www.crownaffair.com   Support the show by supporting our sponsors!
