Scarlet Estelle is an artist manager and developer. She’s the membership director of REC Philly, and she’s a member of the Philadelphia Recording Academy. She’s here today to talk about five of her favorite hip-hop moments in Fall Out Boy’s career. She and Andrea also dive into their shared love for the band, Patrick’s solo career, how Scarlet has continued to find inspiration in the way the members of FOB approach their music, the power of fangirls, how she strives to support and encourage new artists in her own career, and so much more. | Spring Cleaning with Kitzy and Andrea | 19 May 2023 | 00:50:15
Seems like the year just started, but suddenly we're halfway through Spring? Instead of talking with a guest this week, Kitzy and Andrea wanted to share some of the music they've been listening to lately. For Andrea, that means a carefully selected handful of songs. For Kitzy, that means playing spin the wheel with their New Music playlist. There's lots of great stuff from the past couple of months that we haven't gotten a chance to share with you. Don't forget, if you like what you hear, you can find links to pick up music from these artists and to follow them, so you can keep up with their various plans for new music, tours, and all that good stuff. | Little By Little… by Harvey Danger | 02 Apr 2021 | 01:05:05
This week, Caleb takes us back to 2005 to Harvey Danger's self-released third (and final) full-length record Little by Little. We learn about the burning ghost town of Centralia, and Caleb shares a story about how a Harvey Danger song became a key part of his wedding playlist. And, surprising us both, this record is available on Bandcamp!
| Little By Little… by Harvey Danger (April Fools) | 01 Apr 2021 | 01:04:15 | |
We were so excited about this episode that we decided to release it a... little early. But at least we released it all at once, and not... little by little. We hope you enjoy this record as much as we do, or at least a... little. Get it?? Because the record is called Little by Little. Ahh, nevermind I give up. Or DO I??
| Vocations by Early Riser | 26 Mar 2021 | 01:25:11 | |
This week we're joined by Kiri & Heidi from Early Riser to discuss their brand new record Vocations (available now from A-F Records). We cover everything from shitty people with ulterior motives, the importance of being seen over being scene, some dope t-shirt ideas, and how music critics should watch more Food Network. Don’t forget to pop over to https://earlyriserrr.bandcamp.com/! And here's the video for the title track Vocations.
| Mikey Erg | 19 Mar 2021 | 01:14:08 | |
Mikey Erg - yeah, that Mikey Erg, the one that's in every band - is on the show this week! We chat about his dope new self-titled, the rad story behind the cover art, furniture made from road cases, and a sprinkle of data analytics. Come join the fun! And when you're done, don't forget to check out mikeyerg dot bandcamp dot com!

| The Guy from Eve 6 Wants You to Listen to These Songs (Max Collins) | 05 Mar 2021 | 01:18:07 | |
In what is truly a dream come true, we are joined this week by Max Collins of Eve6. Yes, that Eve6. We talk about some new jams he's been cooking up in his pandemic kitchen, including one of the wildest collaboration stories we've ever heard. He also shares a handful of tracks that he loves, old and new. In our opinions, you won't want to miss this one. I mean, maybe you do, we're not your dad, but you probably don't. Check out Max's playlist on Spotify Visit grimvalue.com to watch the video for "Black Nova" and to pre-order Grim value.
| Wild River by Anika Pyle | 26 Feb 2021 | 01:03:41 | |
This week we chatted with Anika Pyle about her new solo record Wild River, her poetry, and finding joy in life. We’ve heard a lot about how artists have coped with the pandemic, but Anika’s story is one of our favorites! Tour's cancelled? Tour the national parks instead. When you're done listening to this episode, head on over to https://www.anikapyle.com/shop to pick up your copy of the LP & book!
| New Ruins by The Kidcrash | 19 Feb 2021 | 01:18:02 | |
Caleb takes us way back to 2004 with the controversial sleeper hit New Ruins, by The Kidcrash. We talk about the reason this record has been so hard to find for years, Caleb's fear of desert fauna, and what it's like to make a record when your bag of tricks isn't as big as you think it is. Be sure to subscribe to the Left of the Dial YouTube channel to watch all of the upcoming LOTD Live content, and don't forget about the Night Shift Radio patreon for exclusive behind the scenes extras!
| Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Original Motion Picture Soundtrack | 12 Feb 2021 | 00:59:37 | |
It's a Night Shift Radio crossover event - 4 shows, 1 Scott... Pilgrim, that is. Here on Left of the Dial, we're talking about the music of Scott Pilgrim vs the World. We jam out to Sex Bob-omb, Crash & the Boys, Metric, and Plumbtree from the orginal motion picture sountrack, and talk about how these tracks were written for or influenced the story. As a bonus, we threw in a couple of Anamanaguchi's glorious chiptune jams from the recently re-released Scott Pilgrim video game. When you're done here, make sure to check out the rest of the crossover on The SuperPodHeroCast, Fight Jokes About Everything, and Shift-Alt-Q! And don't miss the first ever Left of the Dial LIVE, featuring Riverby! The stream starts tomorrow (2/13) at 8pm Eastern. Behind the scenes look at the cast learning their instruments. The Clash at Demonhead performing Black Sheep.
| Clothbound by The Sonder Bombs | 06 Feb 2021 | 01:02:30 | |
This week, we talk Clothbound, the brand new full-length record by The Sonder Bombs. The one that dropped last Friday, and not in fact the 4-song single that had been previously been available. How dare you accuse Caleb of making a mistake like that. So rude. Anyway - TSB is on Bandcamp with some dope merch you should check out, including a DIY bindle kit. Also, there's a fun-in-the-sun summer vibes music video for Crying is Cool that you should watch.
| Drive It Like It’s Stolen by Dave Hause | 28 Apr 2023 | 01:10:43 | |
Kitzy and Andrea are in the studio together without a guest for the first time in a long time, so they're covering a new album that they're both big fans of. Left of the Dial favorite and Philly's own Dave Hause released Drive It Like It's Stolen today, and your hosts are breaking down the gorgeous and introspective album, track by track. You can pick it up now so you'll be ready to sing along when he plays this year's inaugural Sing Us Home Fest next weekend, May 5th and 6th, in Manayunk. Pick up Drive It Like It's Stolen now. | Mirrors the Sky by Lyla Foy | 29 Jan 2021 | 01:07:49
We keep it chill this week as Kitzy lets us all in on the secret of Mirrors the Sky, by Lyla Foy. It's a record they've been listening to regularly since Shazam'ing the song Impossible during a TV show. We dig through the layers of sounds, the sometimes confusing lyrics, the jarring use of a marimba, and the consistently beautiful vocals. Lyla Foy is on Bandcamp, if you want to show some support. If you're curious about the comparison to Velour100 that Caleb makes, you can check them out here.
| Petals for Armor by Hayley Williams | 22 Jan 2021 | 01:02:01 | |
This week Caleb reveals his love of chill pop, as we discuss the solo record that Hayley Williams swore she'd never release, but that we're hella glad she did. Specifically, he chose six tracks in an extremely scientific manner - they all had cool music videos. Links below (unless you're reading this on Apple Podcasts, in which case I'm sorry but you'll probably have to just type things into YouTube).
| All Hands by Doomtree | 15 Jan 2021 | 01:16:03 | |
********** DISCLAIMER: When we recorded this week's episode, the reports of abuse about at least one member of D**mtree were unknown to us. To be clear, we will never knowingly support any artist who engages in that kind of behavior, nor any others who continue to look away, cover for, or support them. In the interest of transparency, we will be leaving this episode up, but we'll no longer be promoting it. Moving forward, we will be much more careful about the music we choose to cover, to ensure we never promote an artist whose behavior goes directly against everything we value and stand for. Thank you to the thoughtful listeners who have reached out to us about this. We always welcome and appreciate your input. *********** This week, Kitzy expands Caleb's musical horizons with a crash course in Minneapolis-based hip hop collective Doomtree. We discuss how we each got into hip hop, how it influenced Caleb's musical career, and the deeper meaning behind when folks say "I like everything except country and rap." Kitzy strongly recommends getting the Doomtree live experience by watching the following: Caleb recommends the music videos for Final Boss and Gray Duck.
| Marc Cohn by Marc Cohn | 08 Jan 2021 | 01:12:37 | |
This week Caleb discusses how Marc Cohn's 1991 self-titled record is his "Sunday morning gospel hour," and why he thinks Marc is one of the most badass pop singers ever. Kitzy tells the story of how Walking in Memphis was written, and how it saved Marc's career.
| Is fun. the modern day Queen? | 01 Jan 2021 | 01:06:07 | |
For our first episode of 2021 - and the start of LOTD year 2 - Kitzy presents a thesis: fun. is a modern-day Queen. Do they successfully defend this thesis? You'll have to listen to find out. For further research, see this live performance.

| Kitzy's 2020 Top 10, In No Particular Order | 18 Dec 2020 | 01:25:30 | |
As we continue our suddenly rapid approach towards the end of 2020, Kitzy has assembled their top 10 songs of the year - in no particular order. We take a look back at year 1, revisiting past episodes & reminiscing about some of the wonderful guests we've had.

| Top 10 Songs of the Winter Season | 11 Dec 2020 | 01:28:05 | |
It's December, and "Kitzy" and "Caleb" (whose names we put quotation marks around for no reason; why do you ask?) are counting down ten of their favorite Winter/Holiday songs. You can listen to "Kitzy" and "Caleb's" playlist here. Again, these are ten songs chosen by "Kitzy" and "Caleb" (Quotation marks are festive! That's all!) and definitely not by two other members of the Night Shift Radio family who broke into the studio when no one was looking and took over Left of the Dial this week. While we've got you, why not follow Fight, Andrea and their shows Never Heard of It (Fight and Caleb!) and Set Condition One (Kitzy, Caleb, and Andrea!) for no particular reason? Links to purchase these songs! Something Corporate - "Forget December" The Wonder Years - "Brakeless" They Might Be Giants - Holidayland Misfits - "You're a Mean One, Mister Grinch" Jimmy Eat World - "Last Christmas" Good luck finding "What's This?" for purchase, but you can get "Yule Shoot Your Eye Out" on Fall Out Boy's Believers Never Die My Chemical Romance - "All I Want for Christmas Is You" (this one is on a compilation where you can also find another great winter song by Andrew McMahon, "The Lights and Buzz" which didn't make our countdown, but you can hear on the playlist linked above).
| Janelle's Desert Island Top 5 for the Dumpster Fire Year | 04 Dec 2020 | 01:07:48 | |
As we kick off December (yes folks, we're finally almost done with 2020), we decided to do something different. So this week, our friend Janelle joins us to talk about tracks from 5 of her favorite records of the year. We get chance to revisit the incredible talent of Lianne La Havas, empathize with the bassist of Khraungbin for having to transpose her parts, and we learn that Fiona Apple is still at it. Check out Janelle's show Supper Sessions every other Sunday on KXSF and stream some of her favorite past episodes on Mixcloud. Bandcamp links: Bonus: A recording of MTV's The Grind Spring Break 2000 from Cancun which Janelle may or may not be in.
| Power Up by AC/DC | 27 Nov 2020 | 01:14:44 | |
AC/DC is back, and they have delivered... well, exactly what you'd expect from them. Tracks like Shot in the Dark prove they've still got it, and "it" is rock, and rock is what we need right now. If you want to re-live the glory days of band website, check out https://pwrup.acdc.com/. We normally like to plug an artist's Bandcamp page. AC/DC doesn't have one, but that didn't stop Designosaur from snagging their URL. And of course there's the very important tutorial on how to write an AC/DC song.
| Sweet Juice Fest Collective | 21 Apr 2023 | 01:20:09 | |
Listeners will be familiar with this week's Left of the Dial guests because they’re the team behind Sweet Juice Fest, a queer feminist musical festival that centers local diverse artists and creators from the Philadelphia region. Last year, the sold-out festival was held at Rigby Mansion in Germantown and featured some of our favorites here at Left of the Dial including Sug Daniels, Popcorn Daddy, and The Lunar Year, all of whom make up the Sweet Juice Fest collective and who joined Andrea on the show today to talk about this year’s Sweet Juice Fest which will be held again in July. But even before that, they’ve got a really cool event coming up in just a few days, the Sweet Juice Fundraiser, which will be held on April 26th at Dolphin Tavern. Listen to hear some incredible music from the talented, thoughtful, and joyful folks who make up the Sweet Juice Collective and make sure you stick around because they announce the first act who's going to be playing the festival in July, and it's a really amazing artist Philly folks are gonna be stoked about! The Sweet Juice Fest fundraiser is this Wednesday, April 26th at Dolphin Tavern. Get your tickets now. Follow Sweet Juice Fest on Twitter and Instragram. Featured in this episode: Sug Daniels – @sugdaniels_ Popcorn Daddy – Popcorn Daddy is a new band, so we can’t share anything with you. He also puts to rest the burning question - does Cleveland in fact rock? Pick up Impossible Sum on Bandcamp. Check out the video for Born at the End of the Year. Looking for an alternative to the traditional fireplace screensaver to soothe your holiday season? Max has you covered with Left in the Living Room.
| Let Me Roar by Northcote | 13 Nov 2020 | 01:05:14 | |
This week we discuss the new record Let Me Roar, by Northcote. We also break from tradition & talk about a couple of tracks that aren't on the record - mostly just because we like them, but also because they're the songs that sold us on Northcote. You can pick up some of Northcote's older jams on their Bandcamp page. The Northcote Official Site features a few of the music videos from this record, and those are definitely worth checking out (especially Nine to Midnight). | Lifetime by Lifetime | 06 Nov 2020 | 01:09:15
Joining us for the very first time - having definitely never been on this show before and certainly not just last week - is NSR's resident Jersey kid, Andrea. That's because we're talking about Lifetime's surprisingly fantastic 2007 self-titled comeback record. We also discuss the canonical date of the "good day" as experienced by Ice Cube. You can check out what Lifetime has been up to since on their Bandcamp page. Got burning questions about NJ? Tweet them to us @LeftOfTheDialPC, because Andrea runs all our NSR social accounts.
| Patty & Paddy by Dave Hause | 30 Oct 2020 | 01:17:33 | |
This week, your hosts, Kitzy and Most-Definitely-Actually-Not-At-All-an-Imposter Caleb discuss Dave Hause’s new double-EP Patty/Paddy, which features covers of songs originally performed by Patty Griffin and Dilinger Four, respectively. We get into what makes for a great cover, why these songs are so important now, and reminisce about all that time we spent at our favorite spot to get a drink in Syracuse, Coolio’s Bar and Grill. Check out The Horrible Crowes’ cover of “Teenage Dream,” Laura Stevenson’s Tiny Desk Concert, and Heckdang’s Halloween stream featuring some of our personal favorites, including Left of the Dial guests Dikembe and Oceanator. Head over to Dave Hause’s Bandcamp where you can pick up Patty/Paddy, as well as his protest song “Your Ghost,” with all proceeds of the latter going to support the Philly Bail Fund.
| From Exile by The Menzingers | 23 Oct 2020 | 01:03:39 | |
This week, we talk about From Exile - a quarantine re-imagining of The Menzingers' 2019 record Hello Exile. But this isn't just another acoustic pop-punk record. These tracks were stripped down, re-arranged, and put back together. We think some of the tracks were better in their original form, but we also think some of them shine beautifully here. But really, it's up to you to decide what you think! Today (10/23/2020) is the last day to enter our $100 Bandcamp gift card giveaway! If you haven't yet, enter here. After that, we recommend you head over to The Menzingers' Bandcamp page and pick up a copy of From Exile. And for another perspective, check out the Kerrang article we quoted. | Muck by Dikembe | 16 Oct 2020 | 01:21:15
We're joined this week by Andy from Gainsville rock band Dikembe, to chat about their new record Muck. This record takes inspiration from a bunch of amazing bands, and we also chat with Andy about a major personal inspiration - the late Eddie Van Halen. We already know COVID has made bands get creative, but Dikembe takes it to a whole new level (get it?) by releasing their own mobile game. Dikembe is all about community involvement, and 20% of the proceeds from Bandcamp sales of Muck go to GRACE Marketplace. Andy recommends finding ways to get involved locally as well. Don't forget to enter our giveaway for a $100 Bandcamp gift card here.
| Smart Mouth by Riverby | 09 Oct 2020 | 00:59:57 | |
Philadelphia power-pop quartet Riverby dropped their debut record Smart Mouth this year, with plans for a big release show in May. As we all know now, 2020 says "fuck your plans" to us all, but the silver lining is we still get to listen to this dope record & support the band digitally. We may disagree on what the best song on this record is, but there's no arguing that this record bangs. You can pick up Smart Mouth on the Riverby Bancamp page, with all proceeds going to the split bail fund by ACT Blue. While you're there, grab one of their rad Mountain Dew inspired t-shirts. | Recover by Small Signals | 02 Oct 2020 | 01:15:14
This week's special guest is Stephen Roessner of Small Signals - which means we've now spoken to 2/4 Steves of the Four-Steves Tour! For the most recent Bandcamp Friday, Stephen wanted to make a quarantine tribute to local Rochester, NY bands he loves, and Recover is the glorious result. Not only is he shining a spotlight on some incredible bands, all proceeds from the sale that day went to Girls Rock Rochester, which is pretty fuckin' rad. We also announced that we'll be giving away a Bandcamp gift card this month, so make sure you follow @leftofthedialpc on Twitter and keep listening for details! Meanwhile, you can pick up Recover, or any of Stephen's other rad music, on the Small Signals Bandcamp page. While you're there, check out the bands that are featured on this EP, they're all worth your ear-time I promise. | Paradise by Cold Years | 18 Sep 2020 | 01:06:49
This week we talk the sarcastically named Paradise, by Cold Years. This record hits hard with themes of loss, politics, and hard-drinking. We discuss the significance of the number 62, how Caleb thinks this is a nearly perfect record, and the one tiny sound that almost ruined the whole thing - yeah, you're gonna hear it now too. Sorry. Since we referenced music videos for each track we discussed, here's some links for ya! Christian joins Andrea on the podcast today because Jersey Interchange is releasing its debut full-length album C1, out May 5th on Sinking Ship Records. C1 features covers of artists who made their name in the Jersey scene (bands like Bigwig, The Ergs! and Shades Apart) covered by artists who also made their name in the Jersey scene (in bands like Bigwig, The Ergs! and Shades Apart). This album is an absolute Jersey love fest, but it's also just a collection of really great covers of really great songs and an example of something really beautiful that celebrates collaboration and expression and community and all that good stuff we could use a little more of these days. Pre-orders for C1 have already started. They'll be celebrating the album with a release show on May 13th at Twin Elephant Brewing Co. in Chatham NJ. | A Lull In Trafic - The Gloria Record | 07 Aug 2020 | 00:54:33
This week, we celebrate the 20th anniversary re-issue of The Gloria Record's EP A Lull in Traffic. Well... Caleb celebrates it, Kitzy isn't impressed. But that's OK, Chris Simpson has been hard at work with both a new band (Mountain Time), and new Mineral jams, so there's plenty more we can talk about in the future! Strike Anywhere are back, and in style! Not only are they celebrating 20 years since their first record, but they turned around and dropped their first new music in 11 years - Nightmares of the West. | Open Surgery by Man Alive | 12 Jul 2020 | 01:01:13
We're a little late this week, due to the trials of homeownership, but we think this one was worth the wait. We're talking about Open Surgery, the 2004 release by Man Alive. We were both introduced to this record by Caleb's brother Joshua (who you heard in last week's chat with Long Since Forgotten), and it's been in solid rotation ever since! For a little backstory on Man Alive, check out their bio on The Militia Group website: https://themilitiagroup.com/artists/man-alive/ Watch some live footage, and let us know if you agree this band would have been dope to see live (or let us know if you have!): https://www.youtube.com/user/manalivemusic In the show, we mentioned another band called Man Alive! that has a live performance available on BandCamp. They sound absolutely nothing like the Man Alive we discussed, but it folk/bluegrass/Americana is your jam (and we know there are some of you out there) you may want to give this a listen: https://manalive.bandcamp.com/
| Warm Blanket with Worriers | 07 Apr 2023 | 01:02:37 | |
Lauren Denitzio of Worriers is back on Left of the Dial, and we're so excited to talk with them about their incredible new album, Warm Blanket, which is out April 7th–that’s today if you're listening when this episode drops–on Ernest Jenning Record Co. It’s Worriers' fourth full-length album, but it’s their first release as a solo act and really demonstrates the breadth and depth of Lauren's talent as a songwriter, musician, and now, producer. Kitzy and Andrea loved getting to talk with Lauren about writing, playing, and producing just about every element on the album, how their influences do and don't show up in their music, the importance of well-placed reverb, and a whole lot more. Pick up Warm Blanket today, and if you're in any of the below cities, catch Worriers live this weekend. (They're one of our favorite live bands, so don't miss 'em if you've got the chance.) APR 7 FRI Providence, RI. Fete Music Hall. 8PM. APR 8 SAT Malden, MA. Faces Brewing Co. 8PM. APR 9 SUN Ridgewood, NY. TV Eye. 8PM. ENJOY THIS EPISODE? LIKE OUR LIVE SESSIONS?
