This is the end....the end of my 'Leading the Coaching Change Podcast'. They say the end is the beginning.

Leading the coaching podcast has been even better than I had imagined. How did it really happen? A combination of the right time, right place, right people, instincts, hard work, attention to details, teams work and a lot of luck and magic. I still remind myself to keep thinking ahead, stay positive, and dream big.

I just wanted to take that moment to thank all of you around the globe for taking the time to listen to my podcasts, to implement anything that you’ve learned from them, to leave a review, as you become the best leader you can be. I’ve met incredible people, all my amazing guests.

It’s been an incredible journey and I hope that you continue to listen to my conversations with remarkable people over on my LinkedIn live and that you continue learning from me.

🙋‍♀️ The truth is that there have been many occasions when frankly I thought, I didn't know how I was going to manage to do this LinkedIn live last week.

The thing is I am committed to doing my LinkedIn Live every Thursday at 4 pm, no matter what. I have an audience, my analytics and feedback are clear evidence that people enjoy listening to me and my guests.

Last week, I decided to go solo with my LinkedIn Live. I've never done that and I was slightly terrified 😨. After all, there are 713 million LinkedIn users!! Imagine if they are all watching 😮

So what was going to talk about?

I was going to respond to questions that I've been asked and that I am asking myself.

Financial resilience in leadership

Really enjoyed our stimulating and thought-provoking podcast on "Financial resilience in leadership" with Mahmood Reza and John Longford DipPFS.

Now maybe you’re asking, “How can I improve as a financial leader, regardless of where I am on the career continuum?”

Deloitte defines "Financial resilience" as "the ability of an organisation to withstand events that affect their capital structure, liquidity, revenue and assets."

Without financial resilience, commercial and operational resilience cannot be maintained.

We were keen to explore have a conversation around
- financial strategic planning (and forecasting)
- critical cash flow risk management
- communicating financial resilience to create value and foster trust
- helping the board make informed decisions
- conflict resolution (with yourself and with others) and responding to a crisis
- networking skills to hire the expert you trust

Gemma Stow (she/her): " It's not about you. It's about them."

Jeni Ling: "I don't know what my top 3 strengths are."
Gemma Stow (she/her): "What is it that you don't know about yourself that you could use to your advantage? Ask 3 colleagues what they think your top 3 strengths are."

Jan Daines: "I don't have an audience."
Gemma Stow (she/her): "You don't always need an audience."

How to use the power of hope in conversations

Do you know this Airline Pilot Maxim: Do we want pessimism in the cockpit? (Hope Theory: Rainbows in the Mind, C.R. Snyder, 2002)

"Do we really want the pessimistic pilot, filled with anxiety, tension, worry, sadness, rejection, anger, self-criticalness, and profound uncertainty, to be at the controls when our jet is landing in a thunderstorm?"

Not me. I want a high-hope pilot in that cockpit."

But for me, there’s more to it with ‘Hope’ so let me share something that is driving my passion around these 4-letter words.

I am currently writing a PhD proposal where hope is at the core of my research. My research will investigate and analyse how hope determines the outcome of a difficult conversation related to the performance review in a business context.

Hope involves estimation of conscious or unconscious probabilities so my hypothesis is that on choosing the odds to be in our favour, we demonstrate confidence, patience, determination and courage that the ‘perceived’ difficult conversation will transform into a courageous conversation to achieve better outcomes.

Hope will not only determine the future of a strong relationship), influence future performance but also shape the future capacity and capability of a person and ultimately plays a part in the business organisational growth.

So yes, I believe that hope can determine the flow and outcome of a conversation.

In this podcast, I share 5 practical ideas to shift your thinking and your feelings. I challenge you with 3 questions so that you can start using different words. Different words lead to different conversations with different outcomes.

How to successfully manage up

Tony Robbins says that ‘According to Compton's Encyclopaedia, the English language contains some 500,000 words. Yet, the average person's working vocabulary consists of 2,000, 0.5% of the entire language. And, do you know the number of words we use most frequently, the words that make up our habitual vocabulary? For most people, it averages 200-300 words’. This is astonishing because it implies that the language you have been using may be more limited than you previously thought. So with this in mind, imagine now...
Imagine being a middle leader with a new and experienced line manager who happens to be a micro-manager continually asking questions, having an opinion on everything you do, interfering in what you do daily and how you lead, high jacking your meetings with your teams, giving you feedback where you've no idea about the 'why' of this particular comment, for example, 'you need to be closer to your teams'. How would you feel?

In this episode, I discuss what 'managing up' is and I explore the 7 essential tools to influence up.

- When you manage up, you communicate differently

How to accelerate your growth with coaching

This week, I'm focusing on the impact of coaching, I’ve invited Karen Foy, Lecturer Coaching and Behaviour Change at Henley Business School.

Karen and I did a conversation analysis of one of my coaching sessions when I was preparing my re-accreditation from ICF. I loved the observations and perspectives that she shared with me on my own work.

Karen is quoting Carl Jung in our conversation 'Once you've learned all your techniques and tools and models, you're just a human soul across from another human.'

Karen says:
-      We can pick out and get curious about the words
-      We need to create a safe space
-      They may be very powerful in very high ranking positions but there's still a human who has got the same issues as anybody else
