EP234: Kevin Macki on Servant Leadership, Building Connections, and Raising the Next Generation of Leaders05 Dec 202400:46:49

In this episode of The Leadership Conversations Podcast, Jonno White talks with Kevin Macki, Director of School Relations at Calvary Christian Academy and Schools United. Kevin shares his journey from being a teacher and school administrator to his current role in building global peer networks for Christian educators. His insights into servant leadership, fostering connections, and nurturing future leaders are a treasure trove for anyone passionate about leadership and education.

Kevin begins by sharing how a pivotal moment in high school, when his basketball coach recognized his hard work and leadership potential, set the foundation for his leadership journey. This early experience taught Kevin the value of affirmation and helped him develop his philosophy of leadership: seeing and cultivating potential in others. This perspective has remained central to his career, shaping his approach to building strong teams and nurturing future leaders.

The conversation delves into Kevin’s passion for creating a culture of connection and collaboration in Christian education. He explains how Schools United fosters unity among educators globally by breaking down barriers and building peer networks. Kevin highlights inspiring stories of elite schools sharing resources with smaller institutions, demonstrating how collaboration can transform education and create a more unified community.

Kevin also explores the importance of visibility in leadership. Drawing from his experience as a head of school, he emphasizes the value of getting out of the office, building relationships with teachers, parents, and students, and addressing challenges before they escalate. This hands-on approach fosters trust and creates a culture of openness and support, essential for any successful leader.

Another key theme is the courage to have difficult conversations. Kevin reflects on his early struggles with classroom management and how constructive feedback from a mentor helped him grow. He shares how this lesson shaped his approach to leadership, encouraging leaders to give honest, thoughtful feedback with kindness and purpose to help others reach their full potential.

Throughout the episode, Kevin stresses the importance of developing future leaders. He shares practical advice on identifying potential, mentoring emerging leaders, and creating opportunities for growth within an organization. For Kevin, leadership isn’t about holding onto power—it’s about empowering others to lead and succeed.

This episode is packed with actionable advice and powerful insights from Kevin’s decades of experience in education and leadership. Whether you’re an educator, a leader, or someone passionate about creating positive change, this conversation will leave you inspired to lead with humility, courage, and connection. Tune in now to learn from one of the most thoughtful voices in Christian education!

EP233: Mark Plitzuweit on Leading with Purpose, Building High-Retention Teams, and Inspiring Success08 Nov 202401:01:14

In this episode of The Leadership Conversations Podcast, Jonno White sits down with Mark Plitzuweit, President CEO of Edkey, Inc., a diverse charter school network serving over 11,000 students. Mark shares powerful insights on what it takes to lead in education, discussing his journey from teacher to CEO and the core principles that have guided him through the complexities of organizational growth.

Mark opens up about his journey, which began on the athletic fields of high school and college, where he first discovered the power of teamwork and leadership. These early experiences in sports taught him the value of guiding others, a theme he carried forward into his career in education. He shares how, from his early days in the classroom to now leading Edkey, his approach has always centered on helping others uncover their strengths, creating an environment where each team member can thrive.

One of the central themes in this episode is Mark’s commitment to developing a high-retention, purpose-driven culture. When Mark joined Edkey in 2016, he was faced with financial instability and high turnover. Through a people-first approach, he turned these challenges into successes, achieving a 97% retention rate—a rarity in the education field. Mark describes how he built trust within his team by focusing on kindness, transparency, integrity, and open communication. By putting his core values into practice, Mark has created a culture where employees feel valued, empowered, and connected to Edkey’s mission.

Mark emphasizes the importance of trust in leadership, sharing his belief that leaders must release control and allow team members to grow through both success and failure. By giving school principals at Edkey the autonomy to make decisions and learn from their own experiences, Mark has fostered an environment where leadership isn’t about micromanaging but about supporting others to reach their full potential. His philosophy of “trust, yet verify” provides a balanced approach that encourages independence within a framework of accountability.

Another highlight of the conversation is Mark’s unique hiring strategy, which focuses on finding the right people for Edkey’s culture before matching them to specific roles. He explains why Edkey invests heavily in professional development, seeing it as an essential component of retaining passionate and motivated employees. By hiring for culture fit and offering robust training, Mark has built a team dedicated to serving the unique needs of each Edkey school community.

Mark also shares his thoughts on navigating change, especially in the rapidly evolving education landscape. He discusses how the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for schools to innovate and adapt, emphasizing that education must evolve to meet new challenges and expectations. Through his forward-thinking approach, Mark has positioned Edkey as a leader in flexible, community-centered education models that address each school’s unique needs.

This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in transformative leadership, team-building, and making a lasting impact in education. Mark’s story and insights offer valuable lessons on creating a resilient, mission-driven organization that thrives on trust, empowerment, and purposeful leadership.

Leadership Conversation- Episode 133 with Andy Lopata05 Apr 202200:51:45

Name: Andy Lopata

Current title: Speaker, Mentor, and Trainer

Current organisation: Professional Relationships Strategy

Strong professional relationships can help to break down silos within organisations, lead to more and higher quality new leads, uncover hard to find solutions and increase efficiency in a range of areas.

Unfortunately those relationships are often left to chance, leaving many failing to realise the potential their networks offer.

Organisations struggle with more competition than collaboration between departments while sales teams rely on their leaders to bring in referrals as they plod on with tired attempts to find new prospects, ignoring the opportunity to build networks of their own.

By knowing why you and your team are investing in relationships, it is possible to plan accordingly and get great, measurable results.

For twenty years I have worked with companies on how to build, nurture and benefit from professional relationships. Working across sectors, I have helped businesses in professional and financial services, healthcare, software, and more. I’ve even worked with chocolate manufacturers and fitness clubs, the perfect partnership!

I have worked in twenty-six countries worldwide, been quoted in the international press, including Forbes, Entrepreneur.com., The Sunday Times, The Financial Times, and The Guardian in the UK and written five books on the topic.

I’m a Fellow and former Board Member of the Professional Speaking Association and a recipient of the PSAE (Award of Excellence). I’m also a Fellow of the Learning and Performance Institute and a Master of the Institute of Sales Management.

For my sins, I am a Charlton Athletic supporter and former editor of the award-winning fanzine 'Goodbye Horse' (I must have done something very bad in a previous life!). I also enjoy cooking, hiking, the theatre, and various failed attempts at sport!

Leadership Conversation- Episode 131 with Jan Terkelsen05 Apr 202201:04:58

Name: Jan Terkelsen

Current Title: Co-Founder

Current organisation: People Leaders

I support people to create high-performing habits. I have been an executive coach, consultant, and facilitator in corporate Australia for more than 18 years and I understand what it takes to create sustainable change in one’s life. It takes three things, understanding one’s beliefs, managing emotions, and taking focused action in the direction you have decided you want to go.
I am an experienced personality profiler and behavioral change specialist, and I have a deep interest and track record in assisting people with a preference for introversion. I work with clients to leverage this thinking style to create opportunities and openings in their life. Personality impacts decisions, communication, and relationships, and I work with my clients, so they can discover how they can use their thinking preferences to support career aspirations, influence others and have a meaningful work life.
Combining my knowledge of personality and physical well-being through my experience as a fitness professional, I understand the link between physical, mental, and emotional energies. Once you understand your main drivers and limiting beliefs you can create constructive behaviors that “stick”.
Leaders today are dealing with, a rate of change that is only going to get faster as well as a diverse and dispersed workforce. Having a robust and effective decision-making process is key to moving forward effectively. I work with clients to craft and implement a distinct process that is usable and effective, even drilling down to the number of options each individual needs to generate, and key questions to ask to unlock the best options. I also have an MBA in Human Resources and numerous accreditations including MBTI, OCI, LSI, GSI, NLP, and coaching.

Leadership Conversation- Episode 130 with Jeremy Francese05 Apr 202201:07:53

Name: Jeremy Francese

Current title: Founder & President

Current organisation: Strategic Branding Studios

Shy of 6-years ago my network started asking me for help with branding, marketing, and driving sales online.

Unlike my contemporaries, all of which I respect, these folks were not Fortune 500 clients that had millions in marketing to spend. Quite the opposite. These folks were small business owners, nonprofit executives, consultants, physical therapists, you name it. They did not have a stock price to manage, they had families to support and fear about navigating the ever-changing landscape that is communicating in a predominantly digital environment.

So in 2019, after 4 years of success working for free to educate and support these clients, we realized we could bring more value if we build infrastructure and deepened our creative network of professionals. So that’s exactly what we did.

Fast forward to the present, I run Strategic Branding Studios education-forward full-service marketing, and communications agency solely focused on leveraging marketing and communications to accelerate business outcomes.

The way people buy has fundamentally changed. Customers spend less than 15% of their evaluation time meeting with and engaging vendors. Relying on passive word of mouth, a few social posts or blogs, an ad or two, and an e-book won’t cut it anymore and SBS is here to help.

Leadership Conversation: Episode 118 with Mike Ashie29 Mar 202200:54:12

Name: Mike Ashie

Current title: Leadership Consultant

Current organisation: Creator

On my YouTube channel I help NEW managers become BETTER leaders. And I do this with no nonsense sense... if that makes sense?!

Don't get confused between managers and leaders. Managers can be anyone who is given the title. They can be highly qualified but can also be on the opposite end of the spectrum. Leaders on the other hand may or may not have a title but they naturally lead. They get things done without force, fear or intimidation.

Why am I able to stand here and tell you all this shi...stuff? Well, I've got 17 years as a leader in the service industry and 13+ years as a leader in Canada's largest International Airport. That, plus that fact that I've enjoyed over 300 books on the topics of Management, Leadership and Entrepreneurship.

Follow my channel along with the 13,000 other subscribers and learn everything you need to know in order to successfully lead your team.To know more  go through the links mentioned below:

Leadership Conversation- Episode 107 with Jeremy Williamson23 Mar 202200:59:30

Name: Jeremy Williamson

Current title: Head of School - Primary

Current organisation: Genesis Christian College

I’ve worked at Genesis as Head of School – Primary since the beginning of 2019 after working in education for more than 20 years in various roles across independent, Catholic and state schools.

I hold undergraduate degrees in Music and Education and a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership. Currently, I’m working on my Doctorate in Education, with a focus on the future skills curriculum.

Alongside leading the Primary School at Genesis, I spend a lot of my time working with other leaders in the College as we consider its future. Together, we are building on the great Christian foundation of our College, with future-focused, innovative teaching and learning programs, and a school culture which the whole Genesis community loves.

The vision I hold for our students is that they can grow into all of the aspects that make them them—their academics, culture and spirit—while preparing them for a future none of us can imagine just yet!

Our God has designed each of our students to be unique and precious to Him. It is our job as Genesis educators to create a safe place where children are free to discover themselves and who they are in Christ—no matter their skills, talents or ways of engaging in learning.

I believe Christ-likeness and perseverance are really important. Sometimes following Christ’s example seems easy and sometimes it can be difficult. But with perseverance and His help, we can keep striving to be more like Christ every day.

Music has always been my passion and I have spent a lot of my professional career travelling around Australia and the world playing the trumpet for well-known bands and orchestras. For me, it’s the creative and aesthetic sides of music and the arts that drives me to create something similar in schools—inspiring and creative places where children love to come and learn.

I’m married to Megan, a fellow primary teacher, and we have two daughters: Stella and Martha, who also attend Genesis.

Leadership Conversation- Episode 104 with Rocki Howard16 Mar 202200:52:59

Name: Rocki Howard

Current title: Chief People and Equity Officer

Current organisation: The Mom Project

As a black wife, mother, woman, Christian and leader over forty who values individuality as one of my highest needs, diversity has always been top on my personal and professional agenda.

I have spent 20 plus years in the human resource and talent acquisition space. I believe when you give someone a job, in a culture where they are free to be themselves you change their lives. This belief is why I have passionately spent my career creating work cultures, that allow companies to hire and retain the best talent.

Diversity doesn't live in a vacuum, it thrives in cultures that are founded on equity and inclusion. I have felt most alive when working with organizations, who shared that belief and allowed me to advocate for people, to ensure they are heard, welcomed, treated equitable and have a strong sense of impact and belonging.

Name: Jonathan Goldhill

Current title: Family Business Coach | Certified Scaling Up Coach | Trusted Advisor | Author | Podcast Host

Current organisation: The Goldhill Group

My passion for advising entrepreneurs and family business owners on how to effectively grow their companies ignited in 1986.

That was the year my grandfather and his brothers ceased operations of the nation’s largest men’s suit manufacturing company.

I wish I could have been part of the fourth generation of family ownership.

But, there was no succession plan with a disruptive successor from the third generation.

That changed the course of my life.

Today I coach owners and entrepreneurs on how to navigate through the unique challenges and complexities of steadily growing a family business so that it can be handed off to the next generation.

Whether it’s a growth strategy, exit planning, strategic planning or scaling up, when you take control and implement the processes and systems that are holding you back, great things happen. Your stress level goes down. Your business starts to thrive. And you get to enjoy the freedom of having a family business that is primed for a prosperous future.

Current organisation: Escuela Internacional Sampedrana

How Would Your School Community Describe You?
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1NLBb3iTm005zHYlj1TpBZbU1Fyu50BDi/view?usp=sharing

Dr. Schmidt has been an education professional for nearly 30 years. He began his teaching career in Chicago in 1994 and that new teaching journey carried him to Arizona and then Alaska. During that time, he ascertained his Master’s Degree in Education and began teaching aspiring educators at university and in the classroom. By 2009, Dr. Schmidt began his first official education leadership position as an advisor to school principals in Abu Dhabi, UAE. From there he served as an instructional coach in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Those opportunities ignited a passion for enhancing his educational leadership skills and he returned to the States to complete his Administrative Services Credential coursework. While completing said coursework, he served first as an executive director and middle school principal and then as a lower school principal in south-central Los Angeles. In 2018, he accepted a lower school head position at Colegio Americano de Guatemala in Guatemala City. While serving the CAG community, he completed his doctorate degree in educational leadership and published peer-reviewed research on educational leadership decision-making. Since then, and currently, he is serving as the head of upper school at Escuela Internacional Sampedrana in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

It is Dr. Schmidt’s belief that all members of a global society should have access to robust educational programs, and it is a great honor to apply the expertise acquired in his professional and scholarly career toward building a future of life-long learners around the globe. He strives to be a leader who is deeply committed to the success of all stakeholders by being organized, informative, and supportive, utilizing coaching styles that cater to varying personalities and abilities. He endeavors to challenge himself and others to think critically. Having this conviction combined with being community-minded has led to strong, long-lasting relationships with students, faculty, parents, and beyond.

Leadership Conversation- Episode 95 with Brigitte Cutshall08 Mar 202200:44:36

Name: Brigitte Cutshall

Current title: Founder/ Solutions Consultant

Current organisation: Gemini Media, Inc.

The biggest takeaway I've learned in business is this: collaboration and having a creative mindset helps you develop ideas and solutions. One of my favorite things to be involved with is contributing to projects and content production.

My current focus is project management and solutions consulting, providing value and meeting client expectations to help grow their business. I have a specialty in Marketing Communications solutions that encompasses SaaS, platforms and the Three P's: (1) Print Production, (2) Project management, and (3) Publishing.

Health advocacy is something that I'm passionate about and my writing has been featured on DrLaura.com, Wellness.com, HuffPost, and Sharecare.com. I'm also experienced with public speaking at wellness events. Speaking topics include "The Workwell Initiative", "Thriving while Aging", and "How to Make More Time Each Day" (which I turned into an online course).

I've received multiple awards such as The Million Dollar Club (exceeded annual sales revenue) and "Someone You Should Know" recipient (American Printer Magazine); and was a regular speaker as a "production expert" at the annual BookTech Expo in New York.

Selected as 1 of 100 students from around the globe to participate in Seth Godin's inaugural altMBA program in 2015. Making a ruckus where applicable.

After decades of helping others produce their content, I became an author too. So far three books have been published. The books are available in print, digital, and audio.
* "RealThings: 6 Ways to Embrace Life"
* "Expecting the Good: Inspiration from a Badass with a Big Heart"
* "Quality Book Formula: Professionally Publish Your Book for Excellence"
