Buzzsprout

Based on Dominick Domingo’s acclaimed book by the same name, Language of the Soul Podcast explores the infinite ways in which life, simply put, is story. Individually, we’re all products of the stories we’ve been exposed to. Collectively, culture is the sum of its history. Our respective worldviews are little more than stories we tell about ourselves. Socialization is the amalgamation of narratives we weave about the human condition, shaping everything from the codes we live by to policy itself. Language of the Soul Podcast spotlights master storytellers in the Arts and Entertainment, from cinema to the literary realm. It explores topical social issues through the lens of narrative, with an eye on the march toward human potential. And as always, a nudge to embrace the power of story in our lives…

STORY and POLITICS with Dominick and Virginia

Season 2024 · Episode 25

lundi 21 octobre 2024Duration 44:43

Join Dominick and Virginia as we unravel the intricate dance between narrative and politics, as well as the age-old role of STORY in political campaigning. In this episode, we spotlight the media's role in shaping perceptions and its troubling relationship with misinformation. Our discussion warns against inflammatory rhetoric and champions the return of nuance to policy discussions (in lieu of polarizing issues into binary categories.) This kind of self-regulation is essential as we grapple with complex geopolitical issues during this campaign season and election cycle. We are being called upon to audit our own cherry picking and confirmation bias as we develop an awareness of identity politics. Bipartisan solutions lie solely in retiring echo chambers and the all-too common lifestyle of living in respective bubbles. In the spirit of Language of the Soul Podcast, we are indeed 'turning a page,' culturally. Our call to action is to join in the paradigm shift. To join in the telling of a NEW story--one about who we choose to become moving forward--one about interconnectivity and the march toward human potential.

Now more than ever, it’s tempting to throw our hands in the air and surrender to futility in the face of global strife. Storytellers know we must renew hope daily. We are being called upon to embrace our interconnectivity, transform paradigms, and trust the ripple effect will play its part. In the words of Lion King producer Don Hahn (Episode 8), “Telling stories is one of the most important professions out there right now.” We here at Language of the Soul Podcast could not agree more.

Cinema and the Quest for Authentic Representation with filmmaker Jay J. Levy

Season 2024 · Episode 15

jeudi 27 juin 2024Duration 01:47:14

We are joined this week by filmmaker Jay J. Levy, who offers us a peek behind the curtain of his creative process as a storyteller, his location services business, and his current collaboration with comedy writer Russ Woody: a comedic web series titled, 'Poster Pickers.' Jay does not identify as a gay filmmaker but rather as a filmmaker who happens to be gay. In other words, he strives for the universal. Even so, he shares his views on LGBTQ representation in cinema. We engage in an honest conversation about the challenges of conveying authentic narratives like that of Jay's coming-out film, "Dirty Magazines." The discussion expands to embrace the evolution of queer cinema and how gay film festival audiences' appetites have matured over the years. Moreover, we delve into the portrayal of the LGBTQ+ experience in a changing societal landscape and how the art of cinema can bridge generational divides, serving as a conduit for understanding and healing.

Guest Bio: Jay J. Levy is a writer, director, and location scout, doing each with equal passion and precision. "Dirty Magazines" was his first breakout short film that won a number of Best Film and Best Short nods. Unnerving comedy with a serious undertone seems to be the voice at play. An absurd new web series, "The Poster Pickers," is also available as Jay partners with established comedy writer Russ Woody to pose as contentious film critics who recommend films based solely on the poster. Afterlife with Documentarian Ben Harl

Season 2024 · Episode 14

vendredi 14 juin 2024Duration 01:22:08

When the veil between life and death seems fragile, where do we turn for answers? Join us as we discuss the afterlife with writer and musician-turned-filmmaker Ben Harl. In recent years, Ben has moved his passion for storytelling from the page to the screen, learning the craft of filmmaking through trial and error (and a huge amount of help from fellow local filmmakers!) As owner and Creative Director of Silver Compass Studios, Ben has written, directed, and produced several award-winning short films and is in post-production on his first feature film, a documentary Afterlife.

In the latter half of our discussion, we cast a spotlight on the ways in which the pandemic has reshaped our spiritual landscapes and confronted the often-avoided topic of mortality with honesty and vulnerability. The episode navigates the psychological depths of grief and abandonment, touches on the intersection of science and religion, and contemplates the concept of faith, reincarnation, and our individual contributions to the collective consciousness.

Guest Bio:  With an eye on creativity, Ben Harl is a storyteller at heart. He has spent his life writing music, short stories, poetry, and novels. The FUTURE of STORY with Dominick and Virginia

Season 2024 · Episode 11

vendredi 17 mai 2024Duration 01:42:44

Have you ever considered that the tales we tell are the very threads that weave the fabric of society? Virginia and Dominick explore this notion, unraveling the complex relationship between storytelling and its pervasive impact on both personal growth and cultural evolution.  Language of the Soul's latest episode is an eclectic mix of discussions around the essence of art, the intricate balance between artistic freedom and societal responsibility, and the subtle ways in which implicit biases color our everyday interactions.

Join us as we speculate about the elusive definitions of artistic integrity and literary value. What truly defines transformative content? We're reluctant to abandon the traditional tenets that celebrate the potency of storytelling, yet cannot ignore how technological advancements and cultural shifts are reshaping them. We challenge the listener to consider distinctions between literary and commercial fiction, between STORY and mere CONTENT and the waning currency of the human touch and artistic merit in the face of Generative AI.

Equally threatening to both freedom of expression and art for art's sake are forces like sanitization, whitewashing, revisionist history and cancel culture. What is at stake when the mainstream loses the sophistication to parse between transformative story and propaganda? The stakes could not be higher in the face of impending fascism. The question is: what are we going to do about it? What types of stories are we going to tell, moving forward? How can we actively co-create with pendulum swings in human dialectic and shape the future we aspire to? In short, what is the FUTURE of STORY?
