For people with histrionic personality disorder, their self-esteem depends on the approval of others and doesn’t come from a true feeling of self-worth. They have an overwhelming desire to be noticed and often behave dramatically or inappropriately to get attention.People with histrionic personality disorder often don’t realize their behavior and way of thinking may be problematic.

1. A pervasive pattern of excessive emotionality and attention seeking, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by 5 or more of the following (Diagnosis Criteria):
   1. Is uncomfortable in situations in which he or she is not the center of attention
   2.  Interaction with others is often characterized by inappropriate sexually seductive or provocative behavior
   3.  Displays rapidly shifting and shallow expression of emotions
   4. Consistently uses physical appearance to draw attention to self
   5. Has a style of speech that is excessively impressionistic and lacking in detail
   6. Shows self-dramatization, theatricality, and exaggerated expression of emotion
   7.  Is suggestible (i.e. - easily influenced by others or circumstances)
   8.  Considers relationships to be more intimate than they actually are
2. What are the signs and symptoms of histrionic personality disorder?
   1. Personality disorders, including histrionic personality disorder, are among the least understood mental health conditions.
   2. Studies that have been done about histrionic and other personality disorders have identified several factors that may lead to the development of histrionic or other personality disorders:
   3. Genetics: Histrionic personality disorder tends to run in families, so scientists think there may be a genetic (inherited) link.
   4. Childhood trauma: Children may cope with trauma, such as child abuse or the death of a family member, that later as an adult may be disruptive or problematic in their life and become part of a personality disorder.
   5. Parenting styles: Children who experience parenting styles that lack boundaries, are over-indulgent or inconsistent may be more likely to develop histrionic personality disorder. In addition, parents who display dramatic, erratic, volatile or inappropriate sexual behavior put their children at risk for developing this condition. Some researchers think that problems in parent-child relationships lead to the characteristic low self-esteem in people with HPD.
3. How is histrionic personality disorder diagnosed?

   1. Personality continues to evolve throughout child and adolescent development. Because of this, healthcare providers don’t typically diagnose someone with histrionic personality disorder until after the age of 18.
   2. Personality disorders, including histrionic personality disorder, can be difficult to diagnose since most people with a personality disorder don’t think there’s a problem with their behavior or way of thinking.
   3. When they do seek help, it’s often due to conditions such as anxiety or depression due to the problems created by their personality disorder, such as divorce or lost relationships, and not the disorder itself.
   4. When a mental health professional, such as a psychologist or psychiatrist, suspects someone might have histrionic personality disorder, they often ask broad, general questions that won’t create a defensive response or hostile environment. They ask questions that will shed light on:
   5. Because a person suspected of having histrionic personality disorder may lack awareness of their behaviors, mental health professionals might ask to collect information from the person’s family and friends.
   6. Mental health providers base a diagnosis of histrionic personality disorder on the criteria for the condition in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

I wanted to take a minute and say thank you. I grew up ultra vanilla and found myself at age 44 in a relationship with a more experienced partner, OopsCourtDidIt exploring areas of sexuality I never knew existed.
Courtney had been expressing a desire for BDSM play and told me about her past experiences in the lifestyle. Being eager to please her, I began to do research and learn what I could. I was blown away by the amount of BDSM stuff available on the web (I have never watched 50 shades!)
Thankfully, I came across your Podcast which has been my predominant source of information.
Court and I discussed options for play and learning and were both interested in being dominated by a male and a female, I wanted to experience being a bottom/submissive to fully appreciate that aspect from a multisensory perspective.
We both had reached out to perspective dominant types to engage them in discussion to see if there was an interest, we found one person that was local. The relationship started by Courtney expressing our desires and my willingness to learn and this couple had a dominant husband who liked the idea.
We decided to meet for dinner one evening a couple of weeks ago to talk and exchange thoughts. The dominant's wife would not be joining the dinner and had started a new relationship with another dominant outside of their marriage, she wasn't able to connect to her husband as a complete submissive and wanted to explore this dynamic.
I expressed to Courtney that I still wanted to remain focused on what we initially discussed regarding both being dominated. Will, the dominant suggested another female play partner attend the dinner to see what developed.
In the first meeting with Will, he brought Courtney a dozen roses, an app-controlled vibrator, a handmade wooden paddle, and a professionally bound BDSM contract. The dinner went okay and I had good conversations with both Will and Sasha whom Will had invited.
Will appeared very confident in his domination experience and I could see Courtney was excited at this prospect, so I remained open-minded. Will also had an app that he used with Courtney called Obedience, complete with goals, rewards, and punishments, I found it very interesting and it helped me understand some of the beneficial psychology of a Dom/Sub dynamic and it helped me understand how to start, progress and end a scene.
I was not overly comfortable with the dynamic Will wanted with Courtney, I did remain open-minded and in good communication with Courtney. The first time I sat down to review the "contract" I physically got sick to my stomach. I hated just about everything that was in there and as much as I tried, I couldn't shake the feeling. I wrestled with exactly what I was feeling and knew what some of my reservations were and could only describe my feelings as "being put onto a rollercoaster that had previously crashed on me twice, killing two relationships".
I was married twice before (a major no-no in my uber-religious upbringing) and both marriages ended based largely on the advice my ex-wives received from counselor's. In fact, my first wife remarried our marriage counselor, so my distrust was justifiable.
I respected the psychology of the Dom/Sub dynamic and viewed it from a more of a therapeutic aspect and have an appreciation of the superior/inferior dynamic and this dynamic is what made me nervous.
Courtney made Will aware of my hesitations and concerns and we agreed to meet again for dinner.

- I recently attended a munch where part of the focus of conversation revolved around trauma. How we handle it, the mindset we have, where we can get stuck, and just the general approach different people have. I am sure we can all identify or are familiar with people in the various stages or mindsets of processing trauma. The stages were outlined as victim, survivor, and acceptance. Most of us can look back at our lives and recognize when we have experienced one mindset or another, but for some reason, some people never move on from one or another and get stuck there. I am not an expert and I don’t think I can relate to what was explained in a clear concise manner. That being said, this is my understanding of the 3 stages and I wanted to get them out, get some feedback, and see if others have anything to add.

- Why did you write this?
- Has there been any blowback from posting it?
- We’ve all experienced some level of trauma: death of a loved one, physical and/or emotional abuse, sexual assault, violation of limits, etc. 
- A: What do you think lies within those who are able to move past it and into acceptance?

- Do you think it is possible for people to move forward if they have plateaued in one of those two mentalities?

The other day, my wife Kate was talking to a friend on the phone about her record of falling for the wrong kind of man. She had a thing for bad boys, and was inevitably left heartbroken when they treated her badly.

“You should do what I did”, Kate said, “find a good boy and teach him how to be bad”.
I knew she was talking about me. Was that really what had transpired in our relationship?
When we first got together, Kate let me know that she liked it rough in the bedroom. This was a problem for me. I could do athletic — multiple angles, various speeds — but rough was not in my sexual vocabulary.

My whole being is about niceness. That doesn’t make me perfect, it just means that gentleness,
politeness and empathy are programmed into everything I do.
By the way, I’m not trying to suggest that these are virtues I should be praised for. I did not overcome a mean streak through hard work and therapy. Niceness is my innate disposition, my default mode.

When I asked Kate what she meant by liking it rough, she said that she wanted to be “thrown around the bed”. Apparently, it was one of the things she enjoyed most during an otherwise disappointing previous relationship.
I panicked inwardly. Some things that are asked of us we can immediately visualize doing well and with authenticity. For me, this was not one of those things.
I wasn’t sure what throwing someone around the bed would even look like. How could you make it something sexy, and not just naked wrestling? I had no idea.
As a pleaser, however, I was committed to giving it a try. The next time we had sex, when we had finished doing it from the front, I flipped Kate over so we could do it from behind. I did it with reckless abandon, with scant regard for her physical safety. Afterward, I asked how she liked it.
“Liked what?” she asked.

She hadn’t noticed. It was clear I was out of my depth. I asked her for help.
The next time we were naked in bed together, she suggested I spank her. Spanking I understood. She got up on her hands and knees and I started lightly slapping her upper thighs and bottom. I enjoyed the sound I could make when I struck her flesh just so with my right hand. I could tell she was getting into it by the moans coming from her lips.

Polyamory, having more than one consensual sexual or emotional relationship at once, has in recent years emerged on television, mainstream dating sites like OkCupid and even in research. And experts who have studied these kinds of consensual non-monogomous relationships, say they have unique strengths that anyone can learn from.

Consensual non-monogamy can include polyamory, swinging and other forms of open relationships, according to Terri Conley, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Michigan who has studied consensual non-monogamy. While there aren’t comprehensive statistics about how many people in America have polyamorous relationships, a 2016 study published in the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy found that one in five people in the U.S. engage in some form of consensual non-monogamy throughout their lives.

Successful monogamous relationships require communication about desires, needs and problems, says Joanne Davila, a professor of clinical psychology at Stony Brook University who studies monogamous relationships. And this is one area where polyamorous couples excel.

- Defining the relationship

“Everyone jokes that love is not a finite resource, but time is,” Kincaid says. “You can have multiple partners you want to see a lot — you have to negotiate time and space to do that.”

- Practicing safe sex

- Managing jealousy

- Maintaining a sense of independence

“If we’re a married monogamous couple, we have to figure out what to do about our problems. We’re either going to avoid them, resolve them or break up,” Karney says. “But if I’m in a non-monogamous relationship and I have the same problem, I might not have to resolve it if I’m not getting all my needs met from you.”

Definition: (my definition)
The place or a state of being occupied by a submissive at the end of his/her dynamic and the beginning of a new one. A sub in free space still holds sacred their submissive heart and values therein. He/she is unowned and can be uncollared or self collard in free space.
The place of deep contemplation, reflection, healing, and self-growth after the ending of dynamic. The re-acclamation of self whilst still striving to preserve his/her submissive values.
Similar to the vanilla version of being “single” after the end of a relationship.

Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and lack of interest, to the extent that it interferes with your daily life. It is a common mental health problem that normally affects around 7% of the American population in a given year. However, that number has skyrocketed this year, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and a cornucopia of other travesties this year has seemingly gift-wrapped for us all.

There are lots of reasons why a person might be diagnosed with depression, from simple biological causes to psychological and social issues. Whatever causes depression, it’s important to remember that there is help out there for everyone.

1. • When it comes to sex, I am always interested in exploring new experiences and pushing the boundaries of what is considered normal. But as someone who has dedicated a majority of my adult life to researching and writing about and sex and relationships, I’m surprisingly not kinky.

I’ve had hundreds of sex partners, yet I’ve always been a bit hesitant about venturing into the world of fetishes. A lot of my sexually liberated friends think you’re not really good at sex until you’ve tried everything in the book: sex parties, swinging, furries, pony play, wax play… the list goes on and on.But sometimes I get overwhelmed just visiting a sex shop. Will a latex bodysuit chafe my nipples? How many calories are in edible panties? Does a leather whip really need a bluetooth speaker?And then there’s the question of why even bother with all this off-the-wall stuff when the simple act itself is pretty damn good. My therapist once told me kink is always rooted in something much deeper than the act of sex itself.“It’s why all these CEOs are into dominatrixes and humiliation,” she explained. “They spend their days screaming at lower level employees and manipulating people into doing what they need to build their business. They want to be dommed because they want someone else to make the decisions for once.”I certainly am not looking to sex to alleviate work-related imbalances. But I did wonder, am I really not sexually adventurous if I’m kink-averse? Am I missing out? I decided to explore it more, and this is what I learned.

In July of this year, politicians in the UK hailed an amendment to the long-awaited Domestic Abuse Bill as the end of the "rough sex defense”. The new legislation states that consent can never justify grievous or actual bodily harm, even if it was perpetrated for the purposes of sexual gratification.

While the bill itself has been rightly celebrated as a groundbreaking step forward for victims and survivors, many people in the BDSM community have expressed specific concern over this new amendment.

Actual bodily harm (ABH) can include bruising, scratching, and bite marks, which means that many forms of BDSM – where the mixing of sex and pain is done safely and consensually – could fall squarely within the remit of the new law.

Someone asked me, does BDSM exist in Uganda? I honestly have no idea, but I bet many of the physically abusive people to their spouses are covertly into BDSM and are just not able to ‘diagnose’ themselves as such.

In case you were wondering, BDSM are erotic practices (some will say perversions) that involve bondage, dominance, sadism and masochism, executed through role-playing.

Forget the light-weight role-playing of one handcuffing their spouse to the bed during sex or dressing up as a cop, nurse, etc.

This is some seriously dark stuff that involves treating one’s spouse like grime, whipping them until they bleed, tying them up with ropes, strangling them, etc. I remember when the Fifty Shades Of Grey trilogy was first released in 2011, many married women worldwide bored by the sex in their marriages got weird seeds planted in their minds.

The books by E.L. James are possibly the boldest exploration of BDSM and even seek to glorify it in a way. The trilogy was such a hit that every romance novel-loving woman seemed to have a copy; televangelist and American mega church pastor Dr Creflo Dollar once hilariously spent time debunking the novel before giving one of his sermons, telling the ‘sisters’ to not ask their husbands to bring ropes into the bedroom, or whips to lash them during sex.

That is BDSM. And the more I think about it, the more I am convinced that where it exists in Uganda, it comes in a sad GBV (gender based violence) package. There are many people who get off by inflicting pain on their spouses, but will not say outright that this is what pervasively turns them on.

There are wives who argue that unless their husbands physically hurt them, they don’t love them, and even actively provoke their husbands until they receive the beating. Honey, you could be into BDSM; that is, you get sexually aroused from being beaten and treated like trash.

I am tempted to ‘diagnose’ a couple in my neighborhood as BDSM enthusiasts because the surrounding community knows when they have sex. It always starts with a huge fight in the dead of night, which has the village dogs barking in agitation as they hurl bricks and garden tools at each other and run all over their compound screaming.

Then all goes quiet and the next morning they walk around looking like the cats that ate the cream. The first time I heard them fight, I called 999 (they actually turned up – drunk, but coherent) only for the police to get to the home in question and nobody answered.

Still trying to be the good citizen, the next time it happened I told a village council member to “be ready for a murder one of these days” if nothing was done. Eventually, I was told that was “their thing”. We have learned to sleep through their stampedes.

Each to their own. I think sex is the weirdest thing our Lord created for us; there is no one formula to how different heads are wired when it comes to the kind of lovemaking couples indulge in.

But the thing with BDSM and this part of Africa is that there is no playing with pain. Maybe the West romanticizes and eroticizes beatings and pain because it is something many do not encounter growing up.

Otherwise, for those that were beaten for coming home late from school; beaten for dodging the midday nap; beaten for saying ‘bad words’ (heck, a Buganda Road primary school teacher beat me for being caught reading the biblical book of Song of Songs!); beaten for taking a bad report card home; beaten for experimenting with cooking using tins and real fire, etc, anyone raises a cane later in life and we only see red! There is no romanticizing GBV here.

That is why I suspect those that get an erotic kick out of inflicting and receiving physical pain, never say so. All they know is that the sex in their marriage is either make-up sex or no sex at all.

Until someone actually dies or suffers permanent damage.

Have you been curious about choking during sex? Maybe you had a partner recently who, seemingly out of nowhere, asked you to choke them? Or perhaps you saw a porn scene recently where choking was the main attraction? What’s the deal? We have the goods.

Before we get into the psychology of why people are into choking, it’s important to address that choking during sex is extremely dangerous and should be done with caution. There are many risks. Just because you saw choking in a porn scene or are interested in it, does not mean you should just run off and choke your partner. With so much hardcore porn out there showcasing choking as this “no big deal” kind of thing that apparently happens every time you sleep with someone (it doesn’t), we suddenly have novices out here thinking choking is a first date activity. This is all around a BAD idea.

If you’re interested in choking during sex, you need to be so, so careful. This is not the same as spanking, light bondage, or other forms of kinky play. It is capital “D” Dangerous.
You also need to get explicit verbal consent and negotiate how you’re going to choke your partner before you even think about putting your hands around your partner’s neck. In a recent 2019 study conducted by Debby Herbenick, a professor and sex researcher at the Indiana University School of Public Health, 23 of the 347 female respondents described feeling scared during sex because their partner had tried to choke them unexpectedly.
So, why are people into choking during sex—and how can you do it safely, if you're one of them? We spoke to some experts to get the inside scoop.

- What's the psychology behind the appeal of choking during sex?
"For men, choking close to orgasm can have a euphoric effect on climax, but should always be done safely," says Lia Holmgren, intimacy and relationship coach, and the upcoming author of Play with Power. She adds, "Women can have more intense orgasms when coupled with breath play (choking).”

But the appeal of choking may go beyond stronger orgasms. The turn-on has deep psychological implications, giving both partners an opportunity to explore different roles during sex.
Choking highlights the giving and receiving of control. Giving someone permission to choke you—or visa versa—is allowing the two of you to take on dominant and submissive roles in bed. This is something many of us long for: A release from control, or the power to take it. For example, when you’re used to making decisions, perhaps the idea of letting someone else control you during sex can be a turn-on.

“Choking is an act of surrender when we completely trust the other, dominant party, and let them take complete ‘life-threatening’ control over the submissive party,” Holmgren says. She points out that the "life-threatening" aspect of choking is simply a perceived fantasy. You’re not really looking for any sort of near-death experience, but the prospect of someone having that power can be hot.
How can you SAFELY incorporate choking into your sex life?

There's a problem with the way some people perceive choking. Daniel Saynt, founder of The New Society for Wellness (NSFW), a sex-positive members-only club that hosts sexual education workshops, explains: “Choking is common in porn, usually with a male in the dominant position, so many feel this aggressive action is part of being 'a man' or providing strength/dominance in a sexual experience. They feel that doing it is how sex should be done.”

This has dangerous implications. Watching someone get choked out on RedTube does not, in any way, constitute a lesson in proper choking technique. If you do it wrong, it could lead to serious injury or even death.

- A clear mind is a must.
If you don’t know what you’re doing, haven’t discussed boundaries, and/or aren’t in a proper state of mind, stay the hell away from breath play of any kind.
"If you are going to be choking your partner, you need to make it safe, sane, and consensual," Holmgren warns. “Don’t practice or perform choking and breath control when you are under the influence of drugs and alcohol, or when [a partner is] unable to consent or [you] haven’t pre-discussed the act.”

- Take classes and learn what you’re doing.
If you don’t know what you’re doing, you could seriously hurt someone. The way to figure out how to choke someone is with workshops, proper training, and practice.
“If choking or being choked is something you are serious about, you need to take it seriously. Study the anatomy of the neck and read [up] on choking before you even do it,” Holmgren explains.
Figure out the best way to touch your partner's neck.

- When you start using choking with a partner, gently press on either side of the esophagus and figure out the pressure that works for them. If you push directly on the front of their neck (where you gather breath, the Adam’s Apple section of the throat) you can cause coughing. This is uncomfortable, not sexy, and SUPER DANGEROUS.
“You are restricting airflow, which means the strength you use on your partner's neck shouldn’t be crushing," Saynt says. "You don’t want to break their esophagus."

- Pay very close attention to how your partner responds.
“If you restrict airflow too long, you can cause brain damage or death, so don’t get too caught up in the moment," Saynt says. "Be mindful during play to ensure the safest experience for you and your partner."
Your partner should be able to answer you if you speak. If they can’t, stop what you’re doing immediately. Never choke someone so hard they cannot express words vocally. Check-in with each other and gather information about personal preferences as you become more experienced.

- Set up boundaries.
Before any choking takes place, both partners need to establish boundaries and indicate what they are and aren't OK with. Perhaps you’re looking for “hands-only” play, wherein a partner only uses their hands to choke you, or maybe a collar is more your thing. Whatever you’re into, a discussion must take place.

Holmgren suggests talking about the timing, intensity, and overall goal of the choking. “You want to determine when your partner wants to be choked, (during penetration, oral, etc.) or closer to climax," she adds.

You should also talk about the "style" of choking: Is it playful, dominant, maybe a little pretend scary? All of this should be determined BEFORE you ever do it, Saynt says.

-Finally, have a safe word.
In all BDSM play, a safe word should be established beforehand. This is an agreed-upon, usually non-sexual phrase that indicates when one's partner is uncomfortable and wants the play to stop.
Even though your partner should always be able to speak while they’re being choked, you should also have a “safety action,” just in case they aren’t able to verbally communicate. With choking, a common safety action is to quickly shake your head “no” to indicate that the choking needs to immediately cease. Repeatedly tapping your partner (as one does when wrestling) is also another way to indicate that the choking needs to stop.

More intense types beyond general 101 degradation and humiliation are most commonly referred to as edge play because there can be long term psychological effects.
Common forms of emotional sadomasochistic play:
Degradation: make a person feel less about themselves.
Humiliation: embarrass someone.
Fear Play: create a situation where someone believes they are at risk for imminent danger. (Primal, blade, consensual non-consent, kidnapping/capture, interrogation, waterboarding, slave sharing/auction, …)

Total Power Exchange: Giving away all of ones power is in itself an act of emotional masochism.
Emotional Sobriety (Dr. Tian Dayton, PhD): sheds light on how and why an individual engages in unhealthy coping mechanisms and how to stop them; it is based on research of the physiology of emotions, that is, the mind/body connection (the thinking mind and our limbic system-the part of the brain that processes emotions); studies show that repeated painful experiences or “relationship trauma” deregulate the limbic system, thus inhibiting our ability to naturally process our emotions and control or reactions to stress. When we are in this state of imbalance, it is often that we reach for alternate, sometimes self-destructive “mood mangers”.

- Collars can have a multitude of meanings in a D/s relationship. They can show ownership, devotion, or subservience, and can be as meaningful as a wedding ring. They can be essential for some kinds of BDSM lifestyles, or just add spice to an already fun, kinky session.
But what about wearing a collar outside of a relationship? Because of these relationship- and partner-status contexts, many people feel discouraged from wearing a collar just for themselves.
Some in the lifestyle may ask, “What if I don’t have a Master/Mistress right now? Can I still wear a collar?” The answer is that someone who’s rockin’ their singlehood can definitely wear one, though many people are dispirited by the connotations of their relationship status to sport their own. Maybe that rose gold collar makes your skin tone glow, your freckles shine like stars, and is perfectly on point with the rest of your outfit. Who says that a statement piece has to make a statement? Wear it because you and the collar are cute as heck together.

- Learning to love yourself first:
This is important no matter your relationship status. Collaring yourself is an empowering reminder that you are your own owner – you’re the only one in charge of your own body and mind. Wearing that collar gives you permission to love and protect yourself, and reminds you that you’re worth every ounce of energy it takes to maintain and remember that love.

- Primal play in the kink context is getting to a place where the masks of civilization can fall away and allow for acting on urges and impulses more directly.
These can be raw, rough sexual feelings, but they could also be joy, silliness, deep feelings of love and intimacy, feelings of deep tenderness, even sadness and grief.
“Primal” doesn’t necessarily have to mean “rough” (though it often may); it’s more a matter of being raw and unfiltered, whatever the feelings present are.
The term Primal may refer to a type of play, an identity, or a style of relationships and further primal play is often synonymous with pet play.
Primal tendencies often do not often conform to rigorous structures involved with protocol but often do have a d/s element which is often established through some for of dominance display.

Social norms and niceties are discarded for a very unfiltered self. We met, and the sexual encounter was satisfying to a level I have never experienced before. We have continued to meet on a weekly basis for six months. Neither party knows about the other.I do not want to end my relationship, but I cannot live without this aspect of my sexuality. I feel guilt about being unfaithful but exploring in this way has enabled me to stay in the relationship.
Should I leave my partner because of the gap between our sexual tastes? Should I give up my kink desires for what is otherwise a relationship I would have no reason to leave?
My boyfriend’s aggressive dog has stalled our plans to move in together. How can we move forward?
Eleanor says: Listen, it’s fine to feel that this part of your sexuality is something you can’t live without. It’s also fine to decide that a relationship isn’t going to work because of that. We get to leave relationships when staying would mean being bereft over missing out on something. That doesn’t get less true just because the thing in question is sexual. You could leave if you wanted kids and your partner didn’t; if you wanted to live in a particular country and your partner didn’t. Continuing a relationship isn’t just a question of whether you like this person, it’s a question of whether your lives can really dovetail.
But what’s never going to be fine is continually deceiving your partner into staying in a relationship that isn’t the way they think it is or the way they want it to be. You say your partner has been clear that he wouldn’t be alright with an open relationship. Unbeknown to him, though, he’s already been in one, and continuing these meetups is continuing to keep him in an arrangement you know he wouldn’t be OK with.
Your partner will be making sacrifices to be in this relationship. They might differ from the sacrifices you make in their content and exact contours, but all of us change our lives and reorder our priorities to be in a relationship. So far as I can tell, you’re accepting this person’s sacrifices – monogamy, commitment, support, cooperation, friendship. He’s making considerable alterations to his life in order to have a certain kind of relationship with you, which, in fact, he isn’t getting.
It is not deviant or selfish to decide that you have to have this part of yourself satisfied. For many of us, sexuality isn’t an optional extra to a life well-lived, it’s just as crucial an ingredient in wellbeing as friends or exercise or time with family. The fact that it’s called “kink” and gets relegated to the sidelines of subculture doesn’t mean you have to relegate it to the sidelines of your life.
But it’s just never going to be the case that the best thing to do would be to carry on deceiving someone who you respect. Quite aside from the obvious unfairness, it also won’t get you what you want – not really. You want to feel electric. You don’t want to keep this part of yourself separate from the rest of your life forever, so that it’s always wrapped up with splintering; with concealment.
You said that, this aside, you’d have no reason to leave. As I see it, though, you do have a reason to leave: the fact that if you stay, you’ll be deciding your partner should remain in a relationship of significant deceit instead of finding someone whose preferences about sex and monogamy really do align with his. Whether to end this relationship isn’t just a question of, as you put it, what you want.”

I have read of this concept before so it is not mine, however, it was just a meme that set off a thought process in my head, a wonderful cerebral exercise in actuality.

What we ask from each other in dynamic reaches far beyond any relationship you will ever have. What we gift each other is the highest levels of honesty, integrity, growth, and respect. Can you afford that or do you just want her?

Kink in general (an umbrella term for things like BDSM, fetishes, and the increasingly popular rope bondage and suspension world) often gets tied (harty har) directly to sex. This makes sense because for many people, it is. However, for maybe just as many people, it isn’t.
BDSM in particular is famously flexible in the “Is this sexual?” department and very intentional in the boundaries department, making BDSM activities fun and accessible to a wide range of relationship dynamics and contexts.
For example, in attending non-sexual, rope education classes such as those hosted by the Western Mass Rope Collective [find out more via westernmassrope@gmail.com], you will find clothed people working on the complex skillsets it takes to tie someone safely in rope complete with lectures, demos, and troubleshooting. In these contexts, friends may tie friends, partners may tie with each other, or strangers may partner up to practice simple knots. This is a classroom, afterall — there’s not much sexual about it.

-Total power exchange (TPE) is a relationship dynamic that occurs in a BDSM relationship where the dominant partner has total power over the submissive in everything. TPE always applies in sexual situations, but generally also refers to the dominant having power over all other elements of the submissive's life.
-TPE is a turn-on for a lot of people because of the level of trust involved. The submissive essentially give their life away to the dominant. This is also a huge responsibility for the dominant and should not be taken lightly.
-TPE can be used in day-to-day activities, or it can be used for just a few hours during play to spice things up.

1. - “A Guide to Edging-S05E08”
   • Delayed gratification: Building up to orgasm and repeatedly backing off builds up the physical, mental, and emotional anticipation typically resulting in harder, longer, and more fulfilling orgasms.
   • Control: It is very common in BDSM play for the Dom(me) to deny or edge a submissive. Denial of a basic animalistic urge can be an extremely intoxicating type of control
   • Awareness: Edging tends to make people more self-aware of their bodies and minds involving their orgasmic state and how things like breathing and internal thoughts add to or take away from their orgasms. They can then apply that knowledge to other sexual experiences when not edging to provide similar results.
   • According to Anne Russo, LCSW, “edging involves building up to orgasm and then slowing down or taking breaks before you or your partner reach climax. The process, sometimes called “surfing” or “peaking,” can increase blood flow to the genitals to enhance arousal. This can create a lot of sexual tension and excitement, which can lead to a really intense and pleasurable orgasm. It’s like a rollercoaster ride for your body.”
   • The prolonged release of dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, testosterone, and estrogen can provide a much deeper and longer-lasting euphoric state.
   • Addiction: due to the release of neurotransmitters and hormones it is an easily addictive behavior.
   • Loss of orgasm: This can happen once (common), often (common), or permanently (rare). There is a fine line between an edging, a denied, and a ruined orgasm. Many people if edged too long can become so mentally frustrated that it gets in the way of the physical release.
   • Some people start requiring longer and longer “rollercoaster rides” to get the same level of chemical release. If this is constantly being fed, the mind and body will become programmed through classic conditioning and won’t be able to get enough to complete the release. You will easily recognize this happening and you know to take a few weeks or even a few months from all sexual activity to allow for a reset. It’s also advised to seek help from a professional therapist or psychologist who specializes in sexual addictions and dysfunctions.
   • Diminished or loss of genital sensitivity: On average it takes women 20 minutes to climax and men 2-10 minutes. Think about the amount of stimulation that it takes for an hour, two-hour, or ten-hour “rollercoaster ride” of edging! Now, multiply that by the average number of times a person masturbates and has sex a week. I don’t have those figures but that’s got to be a metric shit-ton. The nerves are so sensitive that prolonged, intense stimulation can cause them to dull. This can make it difficult, hard, or even impossible to orgasm.
   • The numbers game: rating the pleasure intensity on a scale from 0-10 and picking numbers or rolling dice for pleasure peaks and valleys.
   • How close can you get? Pushing for the exact edge of climax without going over.
   • Ejaculating without orgasm: Running a man to edge of climax and then removing all stimulation can cause men to ejaculate without the full body orgasm. This often means no loss of erection and further build-ups to finally achieve climax is possible.

• What is edging? Edging, peaking, or surfing is a sexual technique whereby an orgasm is controlled for the purpose of prolonged pleasure and/or agony, It can be performed alone or with a partner and involves the maintenance of a high level of sexual arousal for an extended period without reaching climax.
• Why?
• How does it work?
• Who’s it for? Everyone, right?!?! Well, no. I haven’t been able to find any statistics I trust so basing it only on my personal experiences, I’d say half or most people have stronger, longer-lasting orgasms from edging, around 20% have mixed results, and 20% have consistently diminished orgasmic experiences.
• Risks?
• How? Easy! First, if doing this with a partner, talk about it thoroughly and openly. Make sure everyone is on board, consent is agreed upon, and an easy safe word is known. Bring yourself or your partner to the brink of orgasm and slow down, stop, or move the focal point of stimulation to another part of the body. Do this as many times as desired or until a safe word is called. Be sure to talk about what that safe word means. Does it mean all sexual contact must stop?
