In this episode I speak with Abdur Rahman Muhammad who is a contemporary artist who works and resides in Accra. He has been a practicing artist for over six years with his work exploring the impact that the high unemployment rate has had on Ghanaian youth, particularly through the lens of the overconsumption of Western cultural media.
Abdur captures in oil on canvas the stories of young men and women who brave perilous journeys for their dreams of a better life in the land of 'milk and honey.' He is a member of the Ghanaian art collective, Artemartis. His works have found their way to collectors. and exhibitions all over the world.

He shares his core academic philosophy of going to collaborate with artisans, traders, farmers, food vendors to help bridge the gap of what is learnt in school and what is observed from the community in making art.
NB: This episode was recorded in June, 2022 and dated references made by Hassan about his work was for 2022. His latest work is with Compound House Gallery which features a 3 site solo exhibition which spans across 3 cities in Accra, Kumasi and Tamale. This is scheduled for January, 2023.

He shares the central idea behind Afrodroids being an android which is part machine and part human that houses the human consciousness. The droids live in a dystopian world set in the year 3045 where there are no humans on earth. Owo created over 12,000 unique pieces for his project which sold out in under 11 minutes when it was released.
