Dr Jake Sloane & David Segal - 'What's trending in aesthetics? (Chapter 2)' #25706 Jun 202401:14:36

Episode 257 showcases our hosts Dr Jake Sloane & David Segal.

In our 'What's trending in Aesthetics?' mini-series of episodes we discuss topics that have been popular with injectors on social media or in the news. We'll cover controversies, big stories and themes that have got our industry talking.

In Chapter 2 we cover an article published by The Sun newspaper in the UK. This reported that Laser Clinics UK (with 50 locations built in the last few years) had suddenly been forced to liquidate several of its clinics. This decision left staff jobless and patients angry, with many having paid for treatments in advance with no recourse or refunds offered.

We discuss the global trends that have led to this, other issues that larger chain clinics often struggle with and make some predictions about how difficult the next 12-24 months might be.

Pene Timberlake - 'What makes a good injector & has the bar been set too low?' #25125 Apr 202401:08:03

Episode 251 hosts Pene Timberlake, a Nurse Practioner from Freshwater, Australia. Pene was one of our very first guests on IA (Episodes 3, 26 and 43) and is one of the country's most experienced nurse injectors.

We first learn about her progression from being a Registered Nurse to a Nurse Practitioner (NP). We get an understanding about what this qualification entails and why this was so challenging. We also learn about why the door for nurses wanting to become aesthetic NP's is now effectively closed.

In her first appearance on the podcast over five years ago, we re-visit the question of what makes a good cosmetic injector. With the landscape and regulations having changed so much in Australia, we explore the deeper issue of whether the bar has simply been set too low to become an injector? We ponder whether the changes that have been made were actually very necessary and what else needs to be done to create a recognised 'injecting' speciality.

Dr Jake Sloane & David Segal - 'The latest Australian regulatory changes - where do injectors go from here?' #25018 Apr 202401:12:13

Episode 250 showcases our hosts Dr Jake Sloane & David Segal.

Fresh from our Easter break, we first learn about Dr Jake's trips to New Zealand with Allergan, London for the ACE conference, France to visit the Allergan filler manufacturing plant and Moanco for the AMWC conference.

We then discuss our main topic and the fallout of the latest regulatory changes announced in Australia. With cosmetic clinics now banned from advertising their prices, their menu of services (that involve using medications) and before & afters photos, where exactly do injectors go from here?

Despite all the noise and pushback from the injector community, we ponder whether this is exactly what is needed. A redo, a rethink and a return to the medical model.

Maria Reid - 'What the regulatory changes in Tasmania mean for the rest of Australia' #23805 Dec 202300:29:08

Episode 238 hosts Maria Reid, a Registered Nurse based in Tasmania, Australia. Maria has a Masters in Clinical leadership and is the co-owner of Eden Clinic based in Hobart.

In this bonus and short podcast, we discuss the new and significant regulatory changes that have been implemented in the state of Tasmania for cosmetic clinics.

Back in 2021 Maria was invited to a forum held by the Tasmanian Department of Health. In this meeting the government announced that they would be implementing some voluntary but no less significant changes in how cosmetic clinics operate and how they are licensed. Clinics who do not have a prescribing doctor on site would instead need to apply to become a 'licensed facility' - similar to the licensing of a day surgery facility.

Maria shares the background to this story and how she completed the process for her own clinic. And she has a warning for the rest of Australia - change for the rest of the country is almost certainly coming.

Dr Alexander Rivkin - 'Safety manoeuvres when injecting - are we kidding ourselves?' #23302 Nov 202301:24:13

Episode 233 hosts Dr Alexander Rivkin, an ENT surgeon from California, USA.

For years injectors have argued bitterly about the pros and cons of theoretical safety manoeuvres performed when injecting fillers. These techniques include aspiration, small or larger movements of the needle tip or even aspiration and moving combined.

We explore the rationale proposed for these procedures and try to understand the merits and limitations of what they might offers us.
