EP 103: Mental Minute- Self Induced Pressure10 May 202300:11:37

Send us a text

On this mental minute, I get transparent and talk about one of the biggest limiting factors of my career as a player also at times as a coach - Self Induced Pressure

Self-induced pressure can arise from various factors and personal circumstances. Here are a few common reasons why someone might experience self-induced pressure:

  1. High Expectations: Setting excessively high standards for oneself can create self-imposed pressure. Whether it's related to academic performance, career success, personal relationships, or other areas of life, the fear of not meeting these expectations can generate significant pressure.
  2. Perfectionism: Striving for perfection in everything one does can lead to self-imposed pressure. The constant pursuit of flawlessness and the fear of making mistakes can create a significant burden and cause stress and anxiety.
  3. Fear of Failure: The fear of failure can be a powerful driver of self-imposed pressure. The desire to avoid disappointment, judgment, or negative consequences can result in self-imposed expectations and a constant feeling of pressure to succeed.
  4. Comparison to Others: Comparing oneself to others and feeling the need to measure up to their achievements or perceived successes can generate self-induced pressure. The pressure arises from the belief that one must match or exceed the accomplishments of others, leading to feelings of inadequacy and a constant need to prove oneself.
  5. Time Constraints: Limited timeframes or deadlines can contribute to self-induced pressure. When there is a perceived lack of time to complete tasks or meet goals, individuals may put excessive pressure on themselves to perform quickly and efficiently.
  6. Self-Imposed Responsibilities: Taking on too many responsibilities or placing unnecessary burdens on oneself can result in self-induced pressure. Whether it's trying to please everyone, overcommitting to tasks, or assuming additional obligations, the pressure can build as the individual tries to juggle numerous responsibilities simultaneously.
  7. External Validation: Relying on external validation for self-worth and self-esteem can lead to self-induced pressure. When one's sense of worth is tied solely to external recognition or approval, the constant need to prove oneself and seek validation can create significant pressure.

EP 101: Kyle Wagner: Practice Design and Beginner Mindset02 May 202300:56:38

Send us a text

The "In The Zone" podcast welcomes a special guest Kyle Wagner, an accomplished baseball coach, to discuss various aspects of coaching and the game of baseball. In this episode, the focus is on practice design, early coaching, and Kyle's book, "Green Light Hitting."

Kyle shares his insights on designing effective practices that are engaging and challenging for players. He emphasizes the importance of developing players' skills and confidence through positive reinforcement and feedback through not only in failing but also successes in teachable moments.

The conversation then shifts to Kyle's early coaching experiences and how he developed his coaching philosophy over time. He stresses the importance of building strong relationships with players and understanding their individual strengths and weaknesses.

Kyle also discusses his book, "Green Light Hitting," which focuses on the mental aspects of hitting and how to develop a hitter's mental “degrees of freedom”.  He explains the importance of studying the game and analyzing successful hitters to develop effective hitting strategies.

In addition to studying the game, Kyle also emphasizes the importance of studying people, including players, coaches, and other individuals in the baseball community. He believes that understanding human behavior and motivations is essential to effective coaching and leadership.

Finally, Kyle shares his insights on a practice design template if you will and his "peak-end rule," which suggests that people's overall experience and memory of an event are heavily influenced by the peak (i.e., the most intense or emotionally significant moment) and the end of the event. He explains how this principle can be applied to coaching and creating positive experiences for players.

EP 97: Rant on Injuries and Referring Out13 Apr 202300:07:59

Send us a text

In this podcast, I rant the importance of referring patients to a specialist, such as a sports medicine physician or an orthopedic surgeon, for further evaluation and treatment.

From rotator cuff tears to elbow tendinitis, baseball players are at risk for a variety of injuries that require specialized treatment. While general physicians are trained to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions, they may not have the specialized knowledge and expertise required to effectively manage complex baseball injuries.

EP 93: Mental Minute - What Can You Control?30 Mar 202300:09:25

Send us a text

On this mental minute, I talk about some of the controllable in the game and how to boil it down into 3 things that guys can control the most in the game and really in life!

Every single one of us have days that feel like everything is out of our control.

These are your test days and whether or not you can conquer these days will determine where you end up in life.

Losers allow these days to frustrate and paralyze them from taking action

Winners are much different

Winners will not only accept the challenge and execute at a high level on these days...

But they also get excited when these days present themselves.

They've learned to love the test days because they see them as opportunities to build momentum

To build confidence

To build grit and to become unstoppable.

I recommend you adopt this same mindset.

When you step up to execute and pass the test

The result will be a much stronger version of yourself moving forward.

EP 92: Xan Barksdale: Catcher - Pitcher Dynamics28 Mar 202301:08:25

Send us a text

In the world of baseball, catchers play a crucial role in their team's success. They are responsible for catching and throwing pitches, blocking balls in the dirt, framing pitches to make them look like strikes, and even managing the game from behind the plate. Xan Barksdale, a former professional catcher and current coach for USA Baseball, comes on to discuss strategies for catchers to improve their game.

One key strategy for catchers is blocking. When a pitch is thrown in the dirt, catchers must quickly get their body in front of the ball to prevent it from getting past them and allowing runners to advance. Barksdale recommends practicing blocking drills to improve a catcher's reaction time on how quickly they can retrieve the ball.

Another important area of focus for catchers is framing pitches. By subtly adjusting their glove and body positioning, catchers can make borderline pitches look like strikes to umpires.

In addition to blocking and framing, catchers must also be aware of key performance indicators (KPIs) that can help them evaluate their performance.

Finally, Barksdale notes that catchers must also develop a strong rapport with umpires. By communicating effectively and building a relationship with the umpire, catchers can improve their chances of getting favorable calls on close pitches.

- Static stretching: less favored pre-workout but beneficial post-exercise for muscle relaxation.

Importance of Blood Flow
- Emphasizing the need for warming up tendons and ligaments with low blood flow supply.

Optimizing Workouts
- Pre-workout accessory lifts enhance hypertrophy and training effectiveness.
- Effective cool-down with static stretching improves recovery.

Diverse Stretching Techniques
- PNF and ballistic stretching discussed with caution for potential risks.
- Eldoa stretches and spinal decompression techniques for joint health and pain relief.

Warm-Up Strategies
- Engaging dynamic warm-ups like spike ball or basketball for effective body preparation.
- Stressing the importance of warm-ups for young athletes to prevent injuries.

Key Studies

1.“The effects of static stretching on performance in competitive athletes” by Behm et al. (2011):

EP 85: RANT Blame Game and Broken Lens02 Mar 202300:10:59

Send us a text

In this episode, I'll be diving into a common coaching issue: blaming athletes for poor performance.

I'll discuss why this blaming mentality is actually a victim mentality and how it can be detrimental to both coaches and athletes. Also exploring why viewing athletes as "broken" or in need of constant fixing is a flawed approach to coaching, and how this can prevent athletes from being their authentic selves.

Towards the end of this quick rant, I touch on how coaches can shift their mindset and approach to create a more positive and empowering environment for their athletes and help them take ownership of their actions and how to support them in achieving their goals, rather than blaming or "fixing" them.

Overall, this episode is a must-listen for any coach or athlete looking to improve their performance and create a more positive and empowering coaching environment.
