86. How Can I Push Through Resistance to Change?01 Oct 202400:33:22

On this week’s episode of In The Circle, we’re diving into another powerful inquiry from someone who traveled with me to one of our Recovery 2.0 retreats in England. Today’s guest, Perry, asks: How can I push through my resistance to change?

During our England retreat, we discussed something I call resistance training. When I mention resistance training, I’m talking about engaging in activities that naturally bring up our own resistance. I’m referring to – the voice that says, "I’ll do it tomorrow."

The practice of resistance training is about purposefully doing those things that challenge us, allowing us to break through that resistance and emerge stronger.

In Recovery 2.0, we emphasize this training to help us become our best selves. Perry also asks me about the practices I personally use to overcome my resistance and show up fully in life.

Through this episode, we'll explore the mind, body, and spirit, and discuss ways we can all set up the conditions to blow through our resistance to the things we know are good for us. This, I believe, is key to finding daily fulfillment and moving forward on what I call the path of discovery.

Tommy Discusses:

  • How I overcome resistance to change in my life
  • The powerful tool of accountability
  • Building awareness around your own resistance
  • How you can push past limitations and get out of your own way

85. What Does Conscious Recovery Look Like As We Grow Older?24 Sep 202400:32:56

On this week’s episode of In The Circle, we are truly blessed to have Linda, an elder, joining us. When I say "elder," I'm referring not just to age, but to the wisdom and humility gained over time. Linda brings us such a powerful inquiry when she asks: What does conscious recovery look like as we grow older?

This deeply humbles me. It's a profound inquiry from someone with so much life experience in recovery, reminding us all that the journey continues no matter where we are.

As we age and approach the last chapter of our lives, there can be uncertainty and frustration about how we can maximize the time we have left.

In this episode, we explore what it means to be an elder, to age with dignity and power, and to find fulfillment every single day. This conversation is vital for anyone who wants to grow old consciously and live with purpose.

Tommy Discusses:

  • The power of living in the energy of gratitude
  • Dealing with regret in longer-term recovery
  • Finding grace at every age
  • What does it mean to age with dignity and consciousness?

76. Could I Be Addicted to Procrastination?23 Jul 202400:44:04

On this week’s episode of In The Circle, Galen brings to light the addictive nature of procrastination.

When we actively avoid things we need to do - and even things we may want to do - it erodes our confidence. We may even take other actions that cause us harm.

I look at procrastination as one of the four aggravations: Negative thinking, self-doubt, procrastination, and resentment. These are all patterns of belief and behavior that get in the way of a person's happiness. So, while nobody ‘craves’ these four aggravations, they do fit my definition of addiction: Any behavior someone continues to do despite it bringing negative consequences into their life.

This brings the concept of addiction to everyone's doorstep. Most of us have experienced any or all of these four aggravations at some point… so why do we continue to do these things when they are getting in the way of our progress and desires?

Any pattern of behavior that stops us from living the life we want to live should be addressed. So let’s dive into the roots of procrastination and discuss ways to break free of this habit for good.

Tommy discusses

  • The 4 Aggravations: Negative thinking, self-doubt, procrastination, and resentment
  • How to overcome procrastination
  • The impact that one small step can make
  • Why you don’t need labels
  • Everyone's recovery journey is different

75. How Will My Recovery Journey Impact My Children?16 Jul 202400:31:46

On this week’s episode of In The Circle, we are joined by Tracy, who inquires: Will my recovery journey positively impact my children? This is such a powerful inquiry that I know will have relevance for us all.

Part of this exploration will lead us to understand that there is no such thing as a perfect parent. There is no such thing as parenting without doing some harm. We all have negative ingrained behaviors we see in ourselves that inevitably get passed to our children.

Many of us struggle with the idea that we've done something unconsciously or consciously, which will affect the outcome of our children's life in some negative way.

This is an inquiry about our healing journey as individuals and how we can relieve ourselves of guilt, process through shame, and come out to a much better place. This is relevant for everyone whether you have children or not

Tommy discusses

  • The misconceptions about sobriety
  • What is the root cause of addiction?
  • Embrace self-love and forgiveness
  • Personal growth is the greatest gift you can give
  • Parenting is an imperfect practice

74. Am I addicted to sugar?09 Jul 202400:24:39

On this week’s episode of In The Circle, Nicole is here with us bringing an inquiry about what I call the real gateway drug. Of course, I'm speaking about sugar. Nicole asks: Am I addicted to sugar? Should I abstain completely or is there a place of moderation?

Now, I believe that addressing one's relationship with food and sugar in particular is a central part of recovery for everyone. In Nicole's case, she let go of alcohol several years ago and wants to take her recovery journey to the next level by addressing her relationship with food.

I've seen countless people stuck in the frequency of addiction because they stay in old addictive patterns when it comes to food. This is one of the most important inquiries when it comes to true recovery as we need to be present in our minds and bodies to address the underlying reasons for our food cravings.

Tommy discusses

  • Changing your relationship with food
  • What is the root cause of your cravings?
  • Does our microbiome affect the foods we crave?
  • Learning to be conscious with our food choices
  • Why the food we eat can make a huge impact on recovery

73. When Will I Be Ready To Experience True Freedom From Addiction?02 Jul 202400:30:08

On this week’s episode of In The Circle, we have Bob here with us at 20 years sober. Bob is asking a profound question related to the 12 step path: How would you describe the process of becoming entirely ready?

Now, for those who are not familiar with step six, it reads: we were entirely ready to have God remove these defects of character.  This brings up a lot of questions and some confusion about what God is doing and how God does it exactly. We need to explore this and ask ourselves: what do we need to do to truly advance ourselves along a spiritual path?

How can we awaken out of addiction and experience true freedom? What is the path? What does God have to do with it? What do we have to do with it?

Tommy discusses

  • The role of “God” or “Spirit” in Recovery
  • How Spirit works through us, not for us
  • How the 12 steps and yoga are related
  • Breaking the frequency of addiction with self-forgiveness

72. Can I Change My Personality?25 Jun 202400:27:44

On this week’s episode of In The Circle, Brian asks an incredibly profound question: Can a person change their personality? He goes on to explain that the origin of his inquiry is due to his use of sarcasm and how he does not want to speak in that same tone with that same sharpness, especially to those he loves.

As someone who grew up in New York City, I'm well-trained in sarcasm, and this inquiry hit home for me.

This naturally leads us to a powerful discussion about the nature of personality and whether we can change our deeply ingrained patterns, or if we are set in our ways forever.

Tommy discusses

  • Can you change your personality?
  • The power of your words
  • How to change your mind with morning practice
  • The origins of sarcasm and upgrading your language

70. Am I Doing The Right Thing By Following My Purpose?11 Jun 202400:24:08

In this episode of In the Circle, we dive into a compelling discussion with Patrick, a dedicated individual in long-term recovery, who inquires: Should Purpose Guide Your Path When Helping Others?

Patrick is at a crossroads in his service journey as he questions whether to pursue a conventional counseling career or continue his grassroots efforts of directly assisting people on the streets of San Francisco. Our discussion opens up a broader exploration of what it means to follow one's "Dharma," or true purpose, in the realm of service and recovery.

This is a powerful reminder that true service comes from the heart, driven by a genuine desire to help others and make a difference.

Tommy discusses

  • Are you following your Dharma?
  • Ignoring other people’s opinions
  • How you can make a difference in someone's life
  • Exploring true service and purpose

69. How Can I Let Go Of Relationships That No Longer Serve Me?04 Jun 202400:25:28

In this episode of In the Circle, Today, we'll hear an inquiry from Carla, who asks an important question regarding friendship and letting go: How do I release the ties of a long-term friendship that has become codependent? How can I let go of relationships that no longer serve me?

This inquiry takes us into this realm of relationships, reminding us that friendships, connections, business partnerships, and romantic relationships all have the potential to become codependent if we try to control or place someone else's needs inappropriately before our own.

As we delve into this topic, we're looking at shifting from blame and complaint to a place of self-reflection and growth. It's important to remember, you always have a choice, letting go of a friendship that no longer serves our well-being can be an act of self-care and liberation for all involved parties.

Tommy discusses

  • The difference between codependency and interdependency

  • What is true forgiveness?

  • You have a choice

  • The importance of trusting your gut

  • Outgrowing people on the Path of Recovery

67. How Can I Break Away From Victimhood?21 May 202400:30:50

In this episode of In the Circle, we’re joined by Sam, who brings our attention to an addiction that we don't often consider, the addiction to the struggle itself. Sam inquires: How Can I Break Away From Victimhood?

Most of us can look back and, if we’re self-conscious human beings, notice some patterns repeating themselves, holding us back. The most common being self-sabotage.

This brings up a powerful psychological and spiritual discussion about how we can move out of victimhood. How can we overcome our resistance to the next level? What do we need to do to move into empowerment and personal mastery?

Well, it just so happens that the ancient yogis had an answer to this. The sages had an answer to this, the seers, the seekers had an answer to this, and they wrote it down in some powerful scriptures, and we're going to learn from those lessons today about how to move from victimhood to mastery.

Tommy discusses

  • How to move out of victimhood to mastery
  • Falling in love with yourself
  • Why we are our own worst enemies
  • The Gift of Morning Practice (Sadhana)
  • The true path of discovery in recovery

84. How Can I Maintain Healthy Boundaries While Being of Service in Recovery?17 Sep 202400:37:27

On this week’s episode of In The Circle, we’re joined by Mariana, who brings us an impactful inquiry: How Can I Maintain Healthy Boundaries While Being of Service in Recovery?

We often read in spiritual scriptures that we are meant to give without expectation. Yet, as humans in relationships, we recognize that boundaries are essential, especially in recovery.

Spiritual and religious teachings often compare service to an express train for personal and spiritual growth. While giving and serving are fundamental aspects of recovery, it’s important to understand that setting healthy boundaries not only prevents burnout but also allows us to continue giving sustainably.

I often say that ‘service is where the action is’, but what does it truly mean to be of service? How can we differentiate between serving authentically and serving in a codependent way?

In this episode, we’ll dive deep into what it means to be of service and explore how to help others without giving too much of yourself away.

Tommy Discusses:

  • Being of service in the present moment
  • Giving from a place of wholeness and authenticity without losing yourself
  • Creating healthy boundaries
  • What it truly means to be of service
  • Helping others while letting go of the outcome

65. How Can I Navigate Relapse Without Fear Or Shame?07 May 202400:36:25

In this episode of In the Circle, we’re joined by Dorcus, who brings us an incredibly vital inquiry: How Can I Navigate Relapse Without Fear Or Shame? This normal and stigmatized phenomenon is part of most individuals' recovery journeys.

We explore the traditional 12-step method that requires starting over on day one post-relapse. While this method emphasizes the importance of recognizing milestones in recovery, it can also lead to feelings of shame and guilt, which may prevent people from re-engaging with the support they need.

This conversation is crucial for anyone looking to navigate the ups and downs of recovery and to reach a higher consciousness or awakening through their journey.

Tommy discusses

  • Am I broken if I relapse?
  • Why you need a community and support system
  • Recovery is an evolutionary path
  • The protocol to follow after a relapse
  • How yoga and breathwork can help you on your path of discovery

64. How Can I Learn To Forgive Myself?30 Apr 202400:37:20

In this episode of In the Circle, we're honored to have Mark join us from Northern England, bringing a profound topic that touches the core of many recovery journeys: self-forgiveness and building genuine self-confidence. Mark inquires: How can I learn to forgive myself and be confident in my self-worth?

For those of us in recovery, particularly during the early stages, the act of forgiving ourselves can seem monumental. This inability to forgive often leaves us trapped in a cycle of persistent low self-esteem. Understanding and resolving these feelings is a crucial step on the path to recovery.

It's an essential conversation for anyone struggling with guilt or shame and for those seeking insight into their journey towards healing.

Tommy discusses

  • How can I forgive myself?
  • Finding connection and love within yourself
  • “Borrowing” confidence from those who love you

61. How is Modern Technology Affecting People In Recovery?09 Apr 202400:39:29

In this episode of In the Circle, we’re joined by Reno who brings us an extremely thought-provoking question. He inquires: How is Modern Technology Affecting People In Recovery?

Modern technology and social media, while useful and integrated into our daily lives, can distract us from what truly matters - being present, being conscious, and accessing your higher self.

There's a growing need for us to navigate these spaces more consciously, striving for real connection over digital interaction. It's about finding balance and ensuring that our digital habits don't detract from real-world experiences and relationships.

Tommy discusses

  • Is technology destroying our concentration?
  • Are we addicted to our cell phones?
  • How social media fuels division
  • Why we need to connect more in person
  • The need to be in the world, but not of it

60. How Can I Talk About The Loss Of A Loved One To Addiction?02 Apr 202400:32:24

In this episode of In the Circle, we are joined by Stephanie with a profound inquiry regarding the loss of her husband to addiction: How do I answer when people ask me how my husband died? How can I talk about the loss of a loved one to addiction?

When we speak to people who have not been affected by addiction, they are often uncertain how to respond, and because of that, we are met with misperception and judgment. Yet there is so much more than meets the eye.

This is an episode we can all greatly benefit from and I am so grateful to Stephanie for posing this vulnerable and honest question.

Tommy discusses

  • Being mindful of your exhale
  • Why we all experience some form of addiction
  • Is there a bright side to codependency?

59. What Am I Risking By Not Facing My Trauma And Pain?26 Mar 202400:37:41

In this episode of In the Circle, we’re joined by Ron who brings a courageous and important inquiry to our community: What am I risking by not facing my trauma and pain?

Having lost his son due to a skiing accident eight years ago, Ron has firsthand experience navigating through intense grief and loss. I think we are all intuitively aware that something negative will occur if we do not face the emotional challenges of our lives. Yet we rarely ask ourselves, what exactly am I giving up if I don't face it?

On the surface, this will seem like a tragic story, but something quite extraordinary has taken place. I want to share my gratitude for this inquiry and for bringing such a delicate and important matter to the table.

Tommy discusses

  • Why we need to face our grief head-on
  • A better way of dealing with grief and loss
  • The link between spirituality and longevity
  • Can we continue thriving after losing a loved one?
  • How can we make better choices with our pain?

58. How Can I Get High in Recovery?19 Mar 202400:36:55

In this episode of In the Circle, I am joined by John who brings an inquiry that is so relevant to every human being: How Can I Get High in Recovery? How can we replace substance-induced highs with exhilarating experiences like outdoor adventures and meaningful activities?

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of recognizing contentment, and not excitement or relief, as a foundational state in recovery. While seeking thrills is natural, these should not become new dependencies but rather moments that enhance the quality of sober life.

This episode serves as a reminder that genuine happiness and fulfillment come from within and are attainable in recovery through sustainable, healthy practices.

Tommy discusses

  • When will we learn that enough is enough?
  • Is there a natural way to get high?
  • How to let go of your addictive impulses
  • How you can begin to heal your body and mind
  • Why we must not become dependent on seeking new thrills

52. How Do I Get Sober?06 Feb 202400:53:50

In this episode of In the Circle, we take a look at an inquiry I get asked the most: How Do I Get Sober? What does sobriety truly entail?

By asking this question, we are looking for a way to evolve into a better version of ourselves– to let go of the old and embrace the new. In order to move towards a life filled with more love, connection, and fulfillment, we need to be honest, vulnerable, and open to change.

We need to remember that momentum comes slowly and develop a one-day-at-a-time concept of life. All we have to do is stay sober today. If you're reading this, the time has come for you to make the change that you know you must make.

Tommy discusses

  • The step-by-step process to getting sober
  • Why there is strength in vulnerability
  • Why you should never hesitate to phone a friend!
  • The one-day-at-a-time approach to addiction recovery
  • The power of a daily recovery routine

51. What Is Love?30 Jan 202400:33:12

In this episode of In the Circle, we're going to speak about LOVE! What is love? How can we relate to it? Is there a way to cultivate it or connect with it?

Love is often confused with excitement, romance, or dependency. Love is not something that depends upon anyone else's opinion, approval, history, or mindset. Love exists as an energy in the universe. And everyone can tap into true love.

The presence within you, the spirit within you, the life force within you is pure love, even if, right now, you don’t know it.

Tommy discusses

  • The challenge of self-love in recovery
  • How to overcome the fear of love
  • Frequent misconceptions about what love is
  • Why we must challenge our conventional notions about love
  • The true meaning of love

In this episode of In the Circle, we have a transformative conversation on sobriety and personal growth with Keith, who inquires: How do I fix my long-standing issues of self-discontent and low self-esteem, a cycle I’ve been trapped in for years?

Adjusting perspectives and accepting the timing of life events is crucial for personal growth and healing. This episode offers hope and guidance to those on their own recovery path and serves as a reminder of the transformative power of self-awareness and community support.

Tommy discusses

  • How to break free from the stories we tell ourselves
  • An exercise for being in the present moment

48. How Do I Navigate Life As A Young Sober Person?09 Jan 202400:33:34

In this episode of In the Circle, I have the joy of hearing from Haley today who asks an amazingly relevant question—How Do I Navigate Life As A Young Sober Person?

Who is my community going to be? Who am I going to get to hang out with? Who will want to hang out with this new version of me? How do I find other people who are interested in health and wellness as a person on a path of discovery?

Stepping onto a new path of recovery can be a scary experience, but knowing that you won’t have to do it alone makes the journey less intimidating. As you continue through recovery, you start to embrace new experiences. You start to look for new communities and new interests, and find the world as you know it expands.

This inquiry is crucial as it touches on loss, grief, self-forgiveness, and the intricate process of making amends. The journey of reconciling with the past, understanding the dynamics of forgiveness, and learning to navigate life after loss are pivotal discussions that hold immense value for many in the recovery journey.

I’d like to thank Peter for his vulnerability and readiness to share his story with us today In The Circle. His willingness to be open is a beacon for others navigating similar paths.

Tommy discusses

  • The path to reconciliation and freedom
  • Why the 12 steps are still relevant
  • The importance of self-love and forgiveness
  • How addiction affects everything around you
  • The process of making amends

82. How Can I Regulate My Emotions Quickly When I’m Triggered By My Own Thinking?03 Sep 202400:37:13

On this week’s episode of In The Circle, we are joined by Rosie, who brings a relevant and powerful inquiry for our consideration:  How can I quickly regulate my emotions and ground myself, so I don't get lost in the story my mind creates?

This is a deeply relevant inquiry—who hasn’t found themselves trapped by the narratives they carry in their mind? It’s all too common to become our own biggest triggers, getting swept away by our thoughts and emotions.

Recovery, however, is more than abstinence. It’s about moving beyond the limiting stories that keep us stuck and discovering new ways of thinking that empower us. It’s the process of letting go of old, unhelpful stories and embracing ones that enhance our connection to truth, power, love, and life itself.

By rewriting our stories, we can open the door to deeper healing and a more authentic, fulfilling existence.

Tommy Discusses:

  • How to disrupt negative emotions
  • How to reframe the narratives that keep you stuck
  • Your thoughts hold no power over you
  • How the mind and breath are connected
  • You are not your thoughts and emotions

45. Why A Grateful Addict Never Relapses19 Dec 202300:37:28

In this episode of In the Circle, I explore the theme of moving beyond addiction and thriving in all aspects of life. Addiction is a universal human experience, and everyone is on the spectrum of this journey in some way.

By using the practice of yoga and meditation, we find ourselves able to move from a state of darkness and addiction toward light, freedom, and joy—true contentment involves a life free from cravings, compulsions, and complaints.

It is impossible to experience true gratitude while harboring these things, and it has been said that a grateful addict never relapses. We need to evolve from being the victims of our lives to being the architects of our destiny, actively shaping our experiences with awareness, responsibility, and empowered choice.

Tommy discusses

  • Celebrating light in the darkness
  • Why you cannot complain and experience gratitude at the same time
  • The power of Santosha
  • How to stop living from craving to craving
  • The power of mantra and mindfulness in addiction recovery

Embracing these new perspectives is essential in our current approaches to dealing with addiction as it offers us a way to heal from within. This method not only broadens our understanding of recovery and addiction, but also sheds light on the deep-rooted desire for joy, connection, and inner peace.

42. Can Yoga Offer New Perspectives on Overcoming Addiction?28 Nov 202300:39:57

On this episode of In The Circle, I join Anand Mehrotra from the Sattva Yoga Academy in Rishikesh, India, to discuss a topic I strongly believe in—addiction and recovery through the Yoga-Vedantic approach. Anand Mehrotra is a world-renowned visionary master, evolutionary thought leader, and entrepreneurial and social change trailblazer. He is the founder and master teacher of Sattva Yoga and Sattva Yoga Academy.

Amazing things take place whenever we get a chance to look at addiction through the lens of yoga.

I have found it profoundly necessary in our modern approach to addiction to start to bring in some of these new perspectives. We allow ourselves to gain further knowledge by working to expand our understanding of addiction and bring to light the innate quest for bliss and connection that is the drive of the human experience.

Tommy discusses

  • The integration of Yoga and Recovery
  • Human nature and its role in addiction
  • The power of sharing personal experiences and transformation
  • The need for humans to give a form to God
  • The need for continual adaptation and innovation in recovery practices

41. How can I react differently to people, places, and things that irritate or trigger me?21 Nov 202300:35:48

On this episode of In The Circle, we explore deep into the heart of recovery and self-discovery, guided by a compelling inquiry from Tim—How can I change my response when confronting people, places, and things that trigger frustration and irritability? This question is not just relevant but essential for those of us on the path of recovery, as it touches on the core issue of dealing with our reactions when we no longer hide behind addictive behaviors.

The externally focused mind highlights the common trap of seeking satisfaction from outside sources, which often leads to frustration, anger, and a sense of failure when things don’t align the way that “we” want them to. We must look inward and understand that true peace and alignment come from within, not from the external world.

This internal focus shifts the emphasis from external validation to internal peace and self-awareness. Recovery is not just about abstaining from addictive behaviors, but also about elevating our consciousness and living a life of presence, kindness, and compassion.

Tommy discusses

  • Shifting our focus from external validation to internal peace
  • Why we all need self-reflection and inner focus
  • The benefits of developing a ‘neutral mind’
  • How to stay centered during difficult times
  • The true nature of addiction

40. Is Addiction A Disease?14 Nov 202301:12:58

In this episode of In The Circle, I delve into the complex and often debated topic: Is addiction a disease? We explore how society interprets addiction and the implications these interpretations have on treatment approaches. What are the motivations behind defining addiction as a disease? If addiction isn't seen as a disease, how do we understand and “fix” it?

We also take a look at the characterization of addiction as a disease of the brain and nervous system, focusing on remission rather than cure. This has led to an increased reliance on pharmacological treatments in addiction recovery. While these are important tools and can be effective for short-term withdrawal relief, their prolonged use might lead to additional dependencies and impede full emotional and mental recovery.

The holistic approach to recovery is still, in my opinion, the best and most effective long-term recovery plan—by taking abstinence-based approaches and following the transformative power of 12-step programs, yoga, meditation, and breathwork.

Tommy discusses

  • Whether or not addiction is a disease
  • The effects of prolonged use of addiction medications
  • Are we treating the symptom or the root of addiction?
  • Why does humankind fall for addictive substances?
  • Why the holistic approach to addiction recovery is the most effective

39. Why Do I Experience a Constant Need to Run From My Painful Feelings?07 Nov 202300:28:35

In this episode of In the Circle, we explore the profound impact of emotions and the healing journey through recovery. Our guest, David, shares his heartfelt story, grappling with immense grief and the complexities of addiction, opening up a conversation about the significance of men supporting one another in recovery.

We need to allow our emotions to flow — stifling them, especially among men due to societal expectations, can lead to a confined reality of emotional and physical blockages. This suppression often leads to various forms of addiction as we attempt to escape from reality.

Each individual, regardless of gender, needs to undergo self-discovery. There is immense power in meditation and the development of a meditative mind to face, rather than flee from, the full spectrum of our emotional experiences. Coming face-to-face with our emotions can eventually dissolve loneliness and fear, as we recognize the non-veracity of these passing states. This journey is not about avoiding our emotions, but rather about understanding the nature of our attachments and healing on all levels to experience true contentment and freedom.

Tommy discusses

  • The developmental tools required to handle trauma and emotional pain
  • How addiction can be a form of avoidance for many people
  • The importance of male support and men's circles during recovery for some individuals
  • How self-discovery and internal work such as meditation and yoga will help the healing process
  • The value of stillness and presence

38. How Can Families Truly Understand the Nature of Alcoholism and Addiction?31 Oct 202300:42:12

On this episode of In the Circle, I go deep into the intricate web of family dynamics and the often misunderstood concept of addiction. With Lynn bringing forth a compelling inquiry about helping families grasp the true nature of alcoholism, it’s important to remember that addiction is not an isolated issue, but something that families experience together.

This conversation shines a light on the profound revelation that addiction originates from trauma and is deeply rooted in codependency. I believe that while addiction might be a universal human experience, the journey to recovery is not. Many belief systems can keep us trapped in the cycle of addiction. Yet, when families embark on the recovery journey together, the results are extraordinary.

In the midst of a mental health crisis, remember that no one has to walk the path to healing alone. Find solace, understanding, and a community that resonates with your journey. There's always a way forward. Stay connected, ask for help, and believe that breakthroughs can, and do, exist.

Tommy discusses:

  • How to navigate family dynamics during recovery

  • Why addiction is a human experience, yet recovery is not

  • Why addiction is deeply rooted in codependency, trauma, and relationships

  • The reason we need to be open and vulnerable with our families

  • The value of experiencing recovery meetings firsthand

37. How Can I Stop Engaging In Risky & Harmful Behaviors?24 Oct 202300:27:51

On this episode of In the Circle we delve into a profound question brought up by James—Why do we, as humans, engage in behaviors we know are harmful? It's clear that being human is challenging, and to cope, we sometimes find ourselves trapped in patterns of behavior that once served a purpose but eventually brought negative consequences.

Our five senses allow us to experience unparalleled joys, from the music we hear to the food we taste. This pursuit of heightened experiences often causes imbalances, making us prone to addictions and unhealthy patterns. It's essential to recognize that we're driven by our body's inner chemistry. By understanding our hormonal and nervous systems, we can identify the underpinnings of our cravings, whether they stem from sugar imbalances or other impactful sensations.

Addiction, as I see it, is any behavior that continues despite its detrimental effects. The solution lies in altering our nervous system's patterning, realigning with our body's inherent intelligence, and uncovering joy in ordinary moments.

Tommy discusses:

  • Why we crave dangerous and thrilling behaviors
  • How we can change our nervous system patterning
  • Are any of us really, truly, broken?
  • How the food we consume greatly impacts our recovery journeys
  • Why we need to be content with life and find joy in the subtle things
  • How the endocrine and nervous system affects our bodies

81. What Steps Can Parents Take to Support Their Grown Child in Addiction Recovery?27 Aug 202400:26:23

On this week’s episode of In The Circle, we’re joined by Elaine, who draws our attention to one of the most challenging scenarios in all of addiction: What steps can parents take to support their grown child in addiction recovery?

How do I remain silent when my child continues to make bad choices?  I don't want to enable them. I don't know how to support them. What can I do? This inquiry will bring up important questions about how to position oneself to be of maximum use to a person who is struggling with active addiction.

This is one of those inquiries that will resound across the recovery community globally. I don't know of a family that hasn't been touched by addiction. This is an extremely relevant and important inquiry as we seek to be better, more skillful, and loving when supporting other people who might be struggling with active addiction.

Tommy Discusses:

  • It’s not your job to fix your child's addiction
  • How to support someone in recovery
  • Live your life without suffering
  • The complexity of addiction
  • The Limits of Parental Influence
  • Letting go with love

36. How Can I Overcome Self-doubt & Remember That I Am Enough?17 Oct 202300:23:51

On this episode of In the Circle, we explore the delve into the self-doubt that often obscures our inherent worth and divine nature. At our core, we are all beings of radiant light and awareness, yet external influences can cloud this realization, leading us to seek validation from the outside world.

As we navigate the modern world, distractions and external pressures can lead us into cycles of addiction or obsession, detaching us further from our inner truths. But hope is not lost; ancient teachings offer potent tools to help still the mind and reignite our foundational brilliance. By channeling our focus inward, we can rise above these distractions, unveiling clarity and reconnecting with our profound purpose.

Yet, it's not just about introspection. Actively serving others, driven by authentic love and compassion, becomes an essential step on this path of self-realization. Through selfless service, we not only uplift those around us but also enhance our personal growth, gradually understanding that the love and light we hold within are powerful catalysts for positive change.

Tommy discusses:

  • How to recognize self-doubt as a baseless story we tell ourselves

  • The fundamental belief that we are divine and perfect

  • How to overcome external influences and internal stories

  • Why addiction detaches us from our truths

  • Why we use yoga and meditation practices to connect with our true selves

35. Can We Resolve Trauma And Be Free?10 Oct 202300:40:49

On this episode of In the Circle, we revisit the profound concept of mind-body connection as we delve into Patty’s inquiry—How can we resolve trauma and be free? This topic heavily emphasizes the psychosomatic connection, elucidating that traumas, regardless of their nature or intensity, can mentally and physically affect individuals.

Awareness will become a vital tool in understanding the traumas we carry within and how to release them. The world of Kriya practices, encompassing breathwork, yoga, and meditation, stand as powerful tools to aid individuals in releasing trapped energy, facilitating a wholesome healing process, and giving us space to still the mind.

Our body inherently desires to release and be free from trauma. It’s an ongoing journey of seeking personal growth, underpinned by love, compassion, and open communication.

You're going to hear this again and again, week after week, time after time, but for those who are hesitating or who have prejudice, or who have preconceived notions about what yoga is, cast those aside and get onto a mat with a great teacher and begin your practice, it will lead to the resolution of trauma from the mind and body.

Tommy discusses:

  • How can we resolve trauma and be free?
  • The world of Kriya practices
  • The significance of the mind-body connection
  • The lingering effects of childhood trauma
  • Why self-awareness is the first step in healing
  • How trauma can have a ripple effect across generations

34. Personal Will vs. God’s Will: How Can We Know The Difference?03 Oct 202300:33:58

On this episode of In The Circle, we have the honor of sitting with Amy Elizabeth, who is posing a very profound question for us—How can I tell the difference between my will and God's will for me, and how can I know the difference between pushing forward with my ego versus pushing forward as a call to my purpose?

These are important questions for anybody on a path of recovery, and naturally, this is going to be a profoundly spiritual inquiry, which is critically important to the human experience. In the reality where there is a higher power we can tap into, where does this higher power begin and where do we end? We need to remember that this higher power is not a distant force, but one that is deeply intertwined with our very being.

It’s when we align with this divine energy that we can usher in a sense of flow, even if life remains punctuated with challenges. That being said, there's much to be learned, not only from our moments of success when we feel aligned, but also in times of grief and sadness. We must introspect on these insights and consider how they might apply to our own lives.

Tommy discusses:

  • The complexities of understanding and differentiating between personal will (our desires and actions) and divine will (a higher power's intention)
  • Why recovery starts as a discipline
  • Why therapy is not just for those who can't figure out their relationships but for anyone seeking growth
  • The reason turning inward for self-inquiry can help align with a greater intelligence
  • The idea that God is not separate from us but is part of us and everything else

33. What Can I Do To Find Peace When Life Becomes Unmanageable?26 Sep 202300:37:53

On this episode of In the Circle, I had the privilege of engaging with Brien, who bravely shares the challenges he is currently facing, from past traumas and medical malpractice to deep-seated religious concerns. He inquires—How can you manage when too many elements from the past and present slam into you all at once?

This is an inquiry that is relevant to us all. When we are struck with moments like these, it is crucial to anchor ourselves in the present moment and focus on the transformative roles of meditation and yoga by calming the mind, spirit, and body.

It's essential to understand that moving from a place of feeling overwhelmed and victimized requires one to take control and let go of past narratives. This is vital on our journey towards self-awareness, authenticity, and understanding our personal narratives.

Tommy discusses:

  • The importance of anchoring oneself in the present moment
  • Why we need to set healthy boundaries
  • Why many in the recovery process feel overwhelmed and out of control
  • How to embrace a life of freedom and presence
  • Why authenticity, self-awareness, and self-reflection are key components in the recovery process
  • Why you need to challenge and evaluate the stories you tell yourself

It’s here that we’ll dig into spirituality and union of the mind, body and spirit, and transform from the inside out. You will learn and grow alongside a community of supportive, conscious, compassionate and vibrant individuals, like you!

Join us at r20.com/welcome to explore how to move beyond addiction and thrive in your life.
