Have you ever found yourself frustrated with corporate diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives? I certainly have, and that's why I invited Zach Nunn to join us today. Zach, the founder, and CEO of Living Corporate, - a diversity, equity, and inclusion digital media network that centers and amplifies black and brown professionals in the workplace through narrative storytelling. I’ve been a fan of the podcasts, videos, blogs, and more that Zach and his team have been creating over the last five years. As an entrepreneur, I’ve also been fascinated by how something that began as an idea became a single podcast – then became a vibrant network of podcasts, web shows, blogs, and more – all while Zach was working full-time in leadership roles in HR, change management, DE&I, and strategy and growth for several large organizations.

Listen in as we explore the significance of authentic conversations and the impact that they can have in creating a more inclusive workplace. Plus, Zach will reveal some exciting new plans for his future, which include making Living Corporate his ONE job - instead of a second job. He talks about developing a learning platform using AI technology, providing organizational assessments, and launching the Living Corporate Collective - an online space for those passionate about workplace fairness to collaborate for systemic change.

Today on the podcast, I’m chatting with Derik Clark, a human resources leader and recently retired Army counterintelligence agent who has a passion for teaching others about the power of nonverbal communication.

Derik is a US Army veteran with 22 years of service, who specialized in counterintelligence investigations and intelligence informant operations.

Derik founded Bodysights body language training to help leaders and organizations to notice key nonverbals during interviews, client interactions, investigations, performance reviews, and negotiations.

In our discussion today, we’ll talk about the importance of reading and understanding body language and the impact it can have in various contexts, as well as how understanding these concepts can help leaders to foster stronger relationships, make better-informed decisions, and navigate complex interpersonal dynamics more effectively.

076: Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile to Build Your Personal Brand and Grow Your Career26 Jan 202300:26:48

Although social media has changed and evolved over the last couple of decades, it’s still a valuable place to be –  to learn from, connect with others, establish your credibility, build your personal brand or business brand, and grow your career.

While there are tons of places we can hang out online these days, many of which offer limited value for our work pursuits, there’s no doubt that LinkedIn – the “professional” social network that’s been around since 2002 – is still a place where you need to be visible online. It is worth the investment of your time, especially if you’re looking to grow your career and your business as well as attract opportunities.

074: My Mother’s Legacy: What It Means to Be an Impact Maker05 Jan 202300:44:06

Who is the first person that comes to your mind when asked who has made an impact on your life? Well, if you had asked me who has been an impact-maker in my own life, then my answer would be my mother. But her legacy is so much more than the impact she has had on my life.

My mother died at the age of 83 in 2020. I don't have any hurt or pain around her passing because I truly believe she was living her best life. She was a woman of faith, who lived a life of service. She was a person who reached out to others and gave something without expecting something in return.

This episode includes some personal reflections on my mother’s life and her impact on me and others. Hopefully, this will remind you that you're never too old or too inexperienced to step out in faith.

Show Highlights:

  • The three pillars of successful aging
  • The importance of a social network of friends for longevity
  • Writing bible verses on index cards
  • What to do when you find yourself living a life you had not planned

073: 10 Activities Leaders Must Embrace to Lead With Impact in the Future of Work22 Dec 202200:29:29

As we close out 2022, I’m focusing this month on how I can best prepare myself – and you – for a successful 2023.

In my world, this time of year is typically filled with prediction posts and podcasts, where thought leaders share what they believe will be the challenges and opportunities ahead in the new year, related to the world of work.

Since my focus is on preparing leaders – like you – to embrace the future of work, and to develop the skills necessary to lead with impact, instead of making predictions that may or may not come true, I’m sharing with you 10 areas that are critical for leaders to focus on, in order to lead with impact in the future of work.

1. Fight for Flexibility for Your Team Members

People want to effortlessly work how, where, when, and for whom they want. 40% of respondents in McKinsey’s Great Attrition Great Attraction Survey published in September 2021, said that Flexibility was the number one reason they accepted their current job.

  • According to Shiftboard’s State of the Hourly Worker Report, scheduling is the #1 complaint of hourly workers and the #1 cause of turnover.
  • 85% of the hourly workers who participated in the survey reported that scheduling affects their overall job satisfaction.

2. Prioritize Career Growth and Development Opportunities for Your People

  • According to Gloat Research Group’s Great Resignation 2.0 Report, the number one reason given by employees who took a new job as to why they would leave again was the lack of career development opportunities.
  • The same survey revealed that 54% of the employees surveyed reported that their employers either don’t take their future interests and aspirations into consideration enough or not at all.

3. Help Your People to Connect with Meaning and Purpose in Their Work

Connect people to something bigger than themselves and help them contribute.

According to Gallup research, a 10% improvement in employees' connection with the Mission or Purpose of their organization leads to an 8.1% decrease in turnover and a 4.4% increase in profitability.

I love this quote from Laszlo Bock – the current CEO & Co-founder of Humu and former Google SVP of People Operations -> “The single biggest thing you can do [as a leader] is make the work feel meaningful.”

What is an organization’s Purpose? It’s what we do for our customers. Some good examples:

  • Nourishing families so they can flourish and thrive - Kellogg
  • We fulfill dreams of personal freedom - Harley Davidson
  • We help people get jobs - Indeed.com

4. Commit to Real Change and Action with Your Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Efforts

  • Set meaningful goals
  • Track progress
  • Hold leaders accountable
  • Incentivize leaders

To learn more about how to do this, check out Impact Makers Episode #51 - The Value of Taking a Strategic Approach to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion with Jennifer Ingram

5. Invest in Your Leaders – Specifically Front-Line Supervisors

The biggest gains businesses will witness in the future will come from hiring and training the right managers, who care for, develop, and maximize the strengths of every single employee.

70% of the variance between the highest engaged teams and persistently disengaged teams is just the manager. (Based on meta-analytics of 100 million employee interviews – Gallup)

6. Focus On Skills Identification and Development

Quote from Jonas Prising - Chairman & CEO of ManpowerGroup:

“Helping people to pre-skill, upskill and reskill for in-demand roles in this Skills Revolution remains the defining challenge of this decade. It was important before the pandemic and is even more critical now – to create a better workplace where everyone is able to unleash their full human potential and have a more equitable share of the prosperity.”

Impact Makers Episode #64: Creating Career Pathways to Unlock Opportunity for the Workforce of the Future with Matthew Daniel

7. SEE Your People

  • Show Appreciation.
  • Give Recognition.
  • Value Differences.

According to the results of a SurveyMonkey / Bonusly Survey, 63% of employees who are regularly recognized were “very unlikely” to look for a job in the next 6 months, and 89% of employees who are rarely recognized are open to accepting a new job.

The number one reason why people left a job without another one in hand was uncaring leaders. - McKinsey's Great Attrition Great Attraction Survey

8. Grow Yourself

  • Own your Personal Development.
  • Set goals, track your progress, and hold yourself accountable.
  • Challenge yourself to learn aspects of business and leadership that are not within your current responsibilities.

9. Develop Your Influence

  • Invest In relationships.
  • Build trust.
  • Share your ideas.

“You don’t get influence through control. You get influence through other people’s positive experience of you. You get influence through people wanting you involved - not by telling them you have to be.” — Neil Morrison – Former Group HR Director, Penguin Random House now Group HR Director at Severn Trent Water

10. Embrace (and lead) Disruption.

  • Change is a constant.
  • Stay curious and seek out ways to lead change efforts.

072: 5 Things I Plan to Start, Stop, and Continue Doing in 202315 Dec 202200:45:56

As we're coming to 2023, what are the things you want to start, stop, and continue doing? Make this a part of your goal-setting process. One my previous mistakes was I didn't set up any concrete plans to actually make my goals happen – which is a 100% recipe for failure. Therefore, it’s important to take time to reflect and look back on maybe what's working, what's not working, and what's missing in your business.

In this episode, I’m going to share with you FIVE things that I plan to start, stop, and continue doing in 2023, as I begin to prepare myself to set goals and have a successful new year. Hopefully, this will encourage you to do the same as part of your goal-setting process as well.

Show Highlights:

Start

  • Goal setting and tracking
  • Daily planning/time blocking/using Trello
  • Prioritizing learning/professional development
  • Investing in my relationships
  • Scheduling time for content creation

Stop

  • Starting my morning with my phone
  • Allowing busy work to fill my day vs activities focused on achieving my goals
  • Not prioritizing my email list community
  • Putting off writing a book
  • Taking my friends and family for granted

Continue

  • Using Profit First in both of my businesses
  • Participating on the Defense Business Board
  • Listening to podcasts for professional development
  • Outsourcing what I’m not best at/working with a team
  • Podcasting

071: 10 Questions You Should Be Asking to Prevent Your Best Employees from Leaving08 Dec 202200:27:37

If you're a leader, and you have people that you must lead, manage, care for and grow, it's been a challenge to both keep people in your workplace, to keep them engaged, to understand what their needs are, and to ensure their success in their jobs so that the company can remain competitive and continue to grow in the future in a vastly changing world of work.

As you're doing your goal setting and goal planning for the next year, I want to share with you 10 questions that you should be taking into your discussions, even if they're not formal performance review discussions.

Three Reasons Employees Are Leaving Their Jobs / Searching for New Opportunities:

  • Career Growth
  • Flexibility
  • Appreciation and Recognition

10 Questions Leaders Should Be Asking to Prevent Your Best Employees from Leaving

To Discover Skills to Focus on or Develop / Areas to Eliminate or Support

1. What are 3 aspects of your job that you feel you’re best at or enjoy the most?

2. What are 2 areas in your job where you could use more support or resources, or would prefer not to do?

3. Outside of work, what do you really enjoy doing? Do you have a hobby or a passion project that you work on that gives you joy

Learning and Development / Career Growth

4. Is there something that you would like to have an opportunity to learn or explore, that either isn’t a part of your current job, or is something you’d like to try?

5. Are there skills that you would like to learn, or career opportunities that you would like to explore that you don’t feel are available to you in your current role, or at this company?

Flexibility / Work Hours

6. Does the current schedule or work situation allow you to do your best work, while also enjoying your life away from work?

Understand How Someone Likes to Be Managed

7. How do you like to be recognized and appreciated? What is meaningful to you?

8. How often would you prefer to meet to discuss and share progress against your goals?

Support Their Progress and Ensure Success

9. What is one thing that I can do to set you up for success in 2023, that I’m not doing currently?

The Magic Question

10. If I gave you a magic wand, and you could change one thing about your current job, or about the company – what would you change?

069: Prioritizing Self-Care to Ensure Your Best Performance and Highest Impact03 Nov 202200:41:42

Self-care isn’t selfish. It is necessary. We truly can’t pour from an empty cup and we can’t help others if we’re emotionally worn, completely stressed out, or too sick to help. In this episode I’m talking about self-care and the five areas I’ve been trying to improve for the sake of myself, my family and my business.

I’ll talk about the importance of sleep, rest and exercise, for our physical and mental well-being. Then I’ll dive into the effects of gratitude on our happiness. I’ll also discuss how caring for others can be a form of self-care. Lastly, I’ll cover caring for your time. Finding balance and reclaiming your time can have a lasting impact on your life and I’m going to share how it changed mine.

My goal is to help you understand the importance of self-care and how to practice it, proactively, without feeling guilty. I hope you enjoy today’s show.

Show Highlights:

  • What is self-care? I’ll give you my favorite definition and share a great quote to help you remember why it’s so important.
  • I’m going to share the five key areas of self-care and give you tips for each area. I’ll share my stories about those areas too.
  • I can’t stress enough the importance of being proactive with self-care. Our bodies speak to us, sometimes loud and clear.
  • If we don’t listen, the consequences can be devastating.
  • We’re talking about self-care but I’m also going to share how caring for others is a form of self-care.
  • Self-care has a physical, mental and emotional impact on our lives, our bodies and on those around us.

095: What Public Speakers Can Learn From Actors and Performers With Public Speaking Coach Adriana Baer12 Oct 202300:45:29

Ever been in front of a crowd with your heart racing, palms sweating, and mind in overdrive? Yep, I've been there too. That's why today, I'm excited to take you on a backstage journey into the fascinating world of public speaking. And who better to guide us than Adriana Baer, a stellar coach who equips leaders with powerful speaking skills, drawing from her rich theater background.

Adriana opens up about how her theatrical past not only helped her face her own fears but also how it serves as a unique toolkit to empower her clients. She focuses on fostering a genuine connection with the audience, aligning with their goals, and digging deep to find that motivation.

We dived deep into how a well-crafted narrative can completely transform your speech, keeping your audience hooked. Adriana graciously shared her method of helping clients achieve the perfect mix of structure and flexibility in their speeches. We also touched on the high-energy Disrupt HR format, where the challenge is to deliver an impactful presentation that's tailored to various events and caters to diverse learners. I also threw in a few of my insights on slide design - a topic that sparks quite a debate.

But, a perfectly designed speech can fall flat without authenticity, right? So we plunged into a candid conversation about this crucial element. Adriana shared a hilarious anecdote where she found herself unintentionally mimicking an "NPR personality" on her podcast. We emphasized the importance of voice warm-ups, truly living the words we speak, and ensuring our presentations echo our authentic selves.

Addressing the ever-present fear of public speaking, Adriana drew fascinating parallels between speaking and singing, delving into the psychological ties that bind the two. We concluded with practical tips on overcoming stage fright and where to find more of Adriana's incredible resources.

Show Highlights:

  • How Adriana's theater background differentiates her from many public speaking coaches who might come from corporate backgrounds or are professional speakers themselves.
  • The framework of crafting a message and delivering it with impact.
  • Why understanding internal roadblocks, like mental and emotional barriers, is key to effective public speaking.
  • How using an acting technique, and creating an "audience character" can provide a clear focus for speakers, and ensure that their message resonates.
  • Why using frameworks and structure can be more powerful and relatable for delivering a message than memorizing a speech.
  • Slides or no slides? Adriana shares her perspective.
  • The science behind the power of storytelling, and how it creates connection.
  • What many popular speakers do wrong, and what great ones do right.

067: How to Make Work Suck Less By Making It Fun with Jeff Harry20 Oct 202201:03:33

Especially with the pandemic, the great resignation, quiet quitting, and all the dramatic shifts the whole world is currently experiencing, a lot of companies are struggling internally. Left unattended and this could lead to a toxic culture.

Obviously, hard conversations have to be made because you can’t just ignore those issues happening collectively. And one of the ways to address this among many other issues is to ensure a happy, safe, and fun culture – and make work suck less.

In today’s conversation, Jeff Harry talks about how he takes positive psychology and plays to tackle some of the most challenging issues that a lot of companies are currently struggling with so they can make work suck less.

With a mechanical engineering degree, Jeff ended up doing team building and special events for the top tech companies in the world. He realized how people were struggling with having difficult conversations, especially dealing with that one person at work that ruins work for everybody else.

He created Rediscover Your Play as an experiment to explore how we can address issues like toxicity in the workplace, toxic masculinity, and having difficult conversations – through the lens of positive psychology and play.

Show Highlights:

  • The two questions to ask your leaders to understand your company culture
  • The difference between forced fun and introducing play in the workplace
  • Why allowing yourself to get bored is the key to unlocking creativity and innovation
  • How to address quiet quitting through play
  • Why psychological safety is required before introducing fun or play into the workplace
  • The reason why meetings suck, and what you can do to fix it
  • How what drove you back when you were a kid can really answer questions like "How do you want to show up in the world?"
  • How to cultivate the next great idea
  • How to add more play to your grown-up life

064: Creating Career Pathways to Unlock Opportunity for the Workforce of the Future with Matthew Daniel22 Sep 202200:43:00

Are you retaining talent by developing and moving them into other opportunities that benefit both their career and the organization? Data shows that the more we invest in developing and seeing those opportunities for other people to move around the organization, the greater the loyalty to the company, and the greater the retention.

There is also data showing the tightening of the talent pipeline, and even if there is, they do not necessarily match how the workforce is progressing. How do we then bridge this gap between talent shortage and the need for skills development? One of the keys is to find ways to plug your talent into the needs of the organization – across the organization.

In this episode, Matthew Daniel shares great insights into how leaders can create career pathways to unlock opportunities for the workforce. Matthew is the Principal Consultant of Talent Strategy and Mobility at Guild Education, a company that partners with forward-thinking organizations to transform education into strategic talent advantage, especially for their frontline.

With his previous career background working with Capital One and as a consultant for some of the country’s biggest employers, the entirety of Matthew’s career has been about investing in others, seeing them grow, and trying to match them up with opportunities so they can go big, and do bigger and better things.

Show Highlights:

  • How Guild Education is connecting universities and employers
  • The shortage of talent and the need for skills development
  • The three things employees really want
  • Focusing on the pathways where you need talent the most
  • Why companies should make an intentional investment in their employees
  • The impact of increased internal mobility

060: Preparing Gen Z and Tomorrow’s Leaders for Future Success Today18 Aug 202200:50:30

This is an interesting time in terms of recruiting and retention for organizations because they’re going to have to deal with all the generations and everyone's different wants and needs.

Clearly, we don't want to separate people by generation as if they’re alien races from another planet, also, because we all have traits and characteristics molded by “nature and nurture.” But these generations all have shared life experiences as members of a particular cohort due to their respective stages of life. Therefore, having an understanding of each generation is useful in every company’s hiring process.

Today, we particularly talk about the Gen Z population, their characteristics, and what they’re bringing to the table. Joining us is Steve McIntosh, founder & CEO of CareerPoint.com, a career advancement coaching platform.

The Gen Z cohort consists of people born between the end of 1994 and 2009. Essentially, these are people who will have entry-level roles that are yet to progress to leadership. And so, this is an incredibly important cohort, especially for companies who have ambitious growth plans, so they should have them figured out.

Show Highlights:

  • The characteristics of the Gen Z population
  • Setting the expectations in today’s workplace
  • Seeking out mentors and leadership opportunities
  • Mistakes companies and leaders make when bringing this new generation on board
  • Solving the conflict between introducing technology and making things less personal
  • How to bring the five generations together in the workplace
  • Tips for retaining the Gen Z talent

059: Two Action Steps You Can Take as a Leader to Increase Employee Engagement11 Aug 202200:11:26

Quick question: when was the last time you asked each of your team members how they’re doing – like how are they REALLY doing? You never really know how that ONE question can create a massive impact on your company.

As a leader, you want to be able to prepare yourself and your team for this dynamic future of work. And one of the key metrics that you need to invest in is employee engagement.

A Bonusly study found that while employee engagement increased in May 2020, it was followed by a significant drop the next month. The survey showed that 63% of workers feel unappreciated by their employer on a daily basis and 59% of people felt that they have NEVER had a boss who “truly appreciates” their work.

The good news is that the world is ever-changing, and so is the future of work. In this episode, I’m sharing two Action Steps that you can implement immediately to make a positive impact, and likely affect the engagement levels of your team.

Show Highlights:

  • Reviewing your response to when the global pandemic was declared
  • The Gallup reports on the “rise and fall” in employee engagement between May 2020 and June 2020
  • Ensuring visibility and accessibility in your team
  • Appreciating your team members consistently
  • Creative ways to be more intentional about recognizing your team members

This episode of the Impact Makers Podcast is sponsored by Workplace from Meta.

Everybody’s talking about the metaverse these days, but Workplace from Meta is different – I mean, the clue’s in the name, right?

Workplace is a business communication tool that uses features like instant messaging and video calls to help people share information. Think Facebook, but for your company.

It's part of Meta’s vision for the future of work - a future in which your job isn’t just something you do, but something you EXPERIENCE. A future in which we’ll all feel more present, connected, and productive.

Start your journey into the future of work at workplace.com/future.

Well, hey there Impact Makers!

The future of work is going to happen, whether you’re engaging with the idea of it or not.

But I believe that you can truly make a difference as a leader in your workplace, and in the lives of those that you lead and serve as we navigate the future together, by being intentional about how you approach your work, and your life.

The Impact Makers podcast will be back each week, and I’ll be sharing tools, tips, and resources to help you embrace the future of work, build your influence, and leverage your expertise to create positive, lasting change.

My core belief is that if you’re in a position of leadership, or aspiring to be in one, you are uniquely situated to make a positive and measurable difference in your organization - and in the lives of those around you.

Now is your time!

Because people will be the key to organizational success in the future - more than ever before.

In the future of work, when there aren't enough humans to fill open positions, or there aren’t enough humans with skills that are needed to do the work that’s required, it will be the leaders who are able to inspire great work, develop their people, and share a compelling vision to get - and keep - everyone engaged who are able to achieve results and thrive.

So please stop what you’re doing right now, and make sure that you’re subscribed, or following this podcast in your favorite podcast app, so you can join me here each week as part of your personal growth and development journey.

057: How to Live Hard, Embrace the Future, and Create Success With Dr. Todd Dewett04 Feb 202100:44:40

I’m excited to share my conversation with Dr. Todd Dewett in Episode 57 of the Impact Makers Podcast. I met Dr. Dewett several years ago, when I was just getting my start as a professional speaker, and we both shared the stage at a regional conference.

At that time, he was a successful university professor teaching leadership and innovation to MBA students - but he didn’t look or sound like most of the professors that I’d come across in my academic career. Big, tall, bald, and covered in tattoos had never greeted me when I walked into a classroom in school.

So, of course I was intrigued to hear what this guy had to say about leadership, and I was not disappointed. With a fresh perspective, an authentic message, and some great stories, he captivated the audience, and inspired people to be bold, and think differently.

Since that time, we’ve become friends, and I’ve continued to learn from him over the years as he wrote books, left the academic world to pursue a career as a full-time speaker, and became one of LinkedIn Learning’s most popular trainers.

Now, with his unique brand of edgy leadership, Dr. Todd Dewett is a best-selling author, one of the most in-demand leadership keynote speakers in the world, and he’s motivated millions to perform at higher levels, and lead with true authenticity.

His latest book is called Live Hard, and it’s a collection of twenty inspiring stories packed with advice about living life more fully.

I think you’ll find Todd’s frank advice and unique perspective refreshing, and I’m sure you’ll get some great takeaways from our conversation.

Topics Discussed In This Episode:

  • What prompted Dr. Dewett to leave the corporate world to pursue a PhD in Organizational Behavior, and then leave a great job as a university professor to become a full-time author, speaker, and trainer.
  • Interesting and creative ways that Dr. Dewett encouraged students to embrace discomfort in order to open themselves up to creativity and innovation.
  • Dr. Dewett’s advice for living a more authentic life.
  • What happens when we don’t push ourselves to be more authentic with others and take principled risks.
  • Two things Dr. Dewett recommends to avoid plateauing in your life and career in your 20’s and 30’s.
  • What Dr. Dewett thinks we all need to get serious about in 2021 and beyond to ensure career and life success - even those who feel secure in their current job.
  • Dr. Dewett’s best advice for living hard, embracing the future, and creating success.

056: Helping Leaders Succeed in Relationships, Work, Community, and Life With Mike Sipple, Jr.28 Jan 202100:58:36

When I think about people in my life who have truly had an impact on me, and have changed my life for the better, it’s a relatively small list. And my guest on Episode 56 of the Impact Makers Podcast - Mike Sipple, Jr. - is most definitely on that list, along with his father, Mike Sipple, Sr.

After leaving my last corporate job as an HR executive in late 2005, I knew I wanted to pursue a different path - and maybe even start my own business.

Thankfully, with the help of a great coach (who also happened to work in the firm owned by the Sipples), I was able to get some great advice by networking with a whole bunch of people who were much smarter than me.

Pretty much all of them didn’t feel that I was ready to start my own business, and many of them suggested that I find an organization where I could learn from someone who’d be willing to teach me how to develop the relationships necessary to grow my own business some day.

I’ll alway believe that there was a bit of divine intervention in my situation at that time, and that it wasn’t an accident that I ended up connecting with the good folks at Centennial.

After speaking with Mike’s dad - Mike Sipple, Sr. - he was kind enough to offer me a chance to join their well-respected executive search firm. He was willing to show me how to build relationships, and to develop business, if I was willing to do the work.

So I joined Centennial in early 2006, with the goal of learning from Mike Sr. - which I most certainly did. But there was also an added bonus with joining the Centennial team. I got to know, and work with Mike Sipple, Jr. as well. Mike was about 20 years younger than me, but already a powerhouse relationship builder, and doing great work as an executive search consultant for a variety of clients in our region, and beyond.

If you’d like to hear more about that story, and the Sipple’s influence in my life, I shared about it on Episode 7 - titled How I Became a Speaker and Entrepreneur. I’ll link to that episode in the show notes if you’ve not had a chance to listen to that yet.

I think you’ll benefit from learning more about Mike today, and I’d highly encourage you to follow him, as well as the work that his teams are doing. There are several ways to connect with Mike, and I’ve linked them all up in the show notes.

So without further ado, let me introduce you to my friend and mentor Mike Sipple, Jr.

Mike is President of the third-generation boutique executive search firm Centennial, Inc. and Co-Founder and CEO of the global leadership platform and consultancy, Talent Magnet Institute®.

As an advisor, writer, and public speaker on holistic leadership, inclusive and equitable workplaces, and how organizations can become a "talent magnet," Mike has supported leaders from all over the world for more than two decades in hiring the right talent, building inclusive and equitable teams, and developing holistic leaders who care about the impact of their leadership.

As the host of the Talent Magnet Institute podcast, Mike shares conversations each week with leaders from around the world, with a focus on equipping leaders to succeed in relationships, work, community, and life.

Mike is married to his high school sweetheart, has three children, 13, 11, and 9, and both a Goldendoodle and Shih-tzu, who were both COVID-19 puppies, added over the last year of a global pandemic. Most evenings and weekends, Mike and his wife Amber can be found cheering for their kids at a basketball court, or a baseball field, or creating conversations with the global community on social media.

055: Redefining HR: Embracing Modern People Practices To Fuel Business Success With Lars Schmidt21 Jan 202100:55:26

Since it’s a new year, I’m already hard at work on achieving the goals that I set for myself, and my businesses in 2021. And one of my goals this year is to read 24 books.

Thankfully, I’ve got some good friends who are helping to fill my reading list with books that they’ve written, which were set for January 2021 release dates.

I spoke with my best friend Laurie Ruettimann about her new book, Betting On You, which released a couple of weeks ago in Episode 53 of the podcast, and today, I’m chatting with my friend Lars Schmidt about his new book - Redefining HR - which releases worldwide on January 26, 2021.

I really enjoyed my conversation with Lars, and he has a great grasp on how leaders in all areas - not just human resources - should approach building strong and capable organizations through implementing modern people practices.

Lars Schmidt is the Founder and Principal of Amplify - a firm that helps progressive people leaders and companies navigate the future of work.

Long interested in emerging work trends, tech, and people practices, his curiosity fueled a career that has afforded him the privilege of solving complex talent challenges for some of the biggest brands in their respective fields including NPR, Ticketmaster, SpaceX, Duo Security, and Hootsuite. He's always been drawn to HR leaders who operate at the leading edges of the field, who embrace 21st Century HR, and who are redefining people practices through their vision, experience, and approach.

Lars has long worked to accelerate the evolution of Human Resources' capabilities and impact through efforts like co-founding the HR Open Source initiative, by contributing regular columns for Fast Company and Forbes, and also writing books, including Employer Branding for Dummies in 2017, and his latest book - Redefining HR, which will release worldwide on January 26, 2021.

Redefining HR provides a framework for leaders to build modern and world-class people teams, enabling them to create people centric organizations that lead to long-term success.

Topics Discussed In This Episode:

  • Lars’ transition from recruiting leader, to employer branding expert, to HR and People Operations community leader and curator.
  • How Lars and Ambrosia Vertesi applied the Open Source concept to create a platform for HR leaders to share case studies, templates, and learnings to accelerate innovation.
  • How curation of resources, experts, and the work of others can be an important part of building credibility, and a personal brand.
  • 7 communities Lars suggests where HR and people leaders can get learning and development opportunities.
  • 5 visionary leaders in the HR and people space Lars suggests that others follow and learn from.
  • 3 skills that Lars believes modern people leaders need to master or develop in 2021 and beyond.

054: Turning Passion Into Purpose: From Career Coach to Recruiting Tech Company Founder With Ariel Lopez14 Jan 202100:47:13

One of the best things about the work that I do is that I have the opportunity to connect with so many talented people doing great things to make the world of work - and the world - better for us all in the future.

Early last year, while looking to expand my network of leaders with diversity and inclusion expertise, I reached out to my network and asked a simple question - “Who should I know that does great work in this area?”

What followed were over 90 recommendations, and I was able to make some great new connections, have some great conversations, and add to my list of potential referral partners in the future.

The first person who responded to my question was Daniel Chait, the CEO & co-founder of Greenhouse, an HR tech company that helps organizations become great at hiring.

Daniel was quick to recommend that I connect with one of his mentees - Ariel Lopez.

Ariel followed up with me shortly thereafter, and suggested that we connect briefly to get to know each other better. I enjoyed chatting with her so much, that I made introductions for her to a couple of leaders in my network as well, not because she or they had any specific need at the time, but because I could see that Ariel is someone who is making things happen, and I felt that they needed to know more about her and her work as well.

Which brings us to where we are today, where I’m also introducing Ariel to many of you. Pro tip: that’s how effective networking, relationship building, and follow up works, and you’ll hear more about how Ariel values that process in our conversation today.

So, without further adieu, let me introduce you to Ariel Lopez - a career coach, entrepreneur, and public speaker with an expertise in digital media and technology. Ariel is the Founder and CEO of Knac, a platform that provides recruiters with a more efficient tool for screening applicants, managing their pipeline, and ensuring that they don't miss out on great talent.

With over a decade of recruiting experience, Ariel has had the privilege of helping some of the biggest brands in the world to build great teams, and as a career coach, she’s worked with thousands of marketing, advertising, and tech professionals to help them grow in their careers and find lucrative opportunities.

Passionate about the future of work and making the job search more humane, Ariel’s ultimate goal is to help people to find career happiness, and to live their best lives.

Topics Discussed In This Episode:

  • Why Ariel loved coaching people in their career journey, and how that experience set her on the journey to helping people to find jobs that they’re passionate about, and care for.
  • Ariel’s recommendation for people interested in finding a career that they love.
  • The importance of resilience and confidence for reaching career goals.
  • How identifying your leverageable skills can help you take charge of your career, and make wise choices.
  • Ariel’s tips for networking and building relationships during COVID times.
  • The importance of figuring out your values, and the pillars that you will focus on and speak to as a thought leader.
  • What inspired Ariel to start a company focused on helping candidates to break through barriers and gain access to opportunities.
  • The trait that most Founders need in order to keep pressing ahead on any Founder’s journey.

053: Putting Yourself First and Finally Taking Control of Your Career With Laurie Ruettimann07 Jan 202100:52:39

I’m coming in hot into 2021 with Episode number 53 of the Impact Makers podcast!

Seriously.

I’m ready to emerge from my 2020 coronavirus induced cocoon, and to make great things happen in my world, and for you in this shiny and promising new year. And I can think of no better way to kick off the year, than with my BFF, Laurie Ruettimann

Laurie is back as a guest on the podcast to chat about her first traditionally published book - Betting On You - which will be released on January 12, 2021.

And that’s truly a big deal.

In Episode 2 of the Impact Makers podcast, I shared a little bit about how I originally found Laurie online through one of her early blogs - Teambuilding Is For Suckers. She wrote every day about work, life and cats - among other things - and even though I didn’t always agree with her, or share some of her views, her writing style was totally engaging, and she always had an informed point of view that made me think.

Over the last 15+ years, she’s evolved online from the anonymous voice behind the Teambuilding Is For Suckers blog, to being the pixie of the apocalypse who penned the wildly popular Punk Rock HR blog, and then the successful blogger who blew everything up to rebrand, and become The Cynical Girl for awhile.

A few years ago, she took all of her great writing and talents over to her own online domain - laurieruettiman.com - and resurrected Punk Rock HR as the name of her popular weekly podcast.

And while she’s become my best friend over the last 11 years, I’m also her biggest Fan. She’s simply one of the best writers out there, and can always be counted on to share frank, informed - and sometimes contrary to popular opinions - career and life advice, which is what is needed in a world where many of the so-called career experts sound very much the same.

It’s always been a personal dream of Laurie’s to write a book and to have it published by a traditional publishing house, and she’s finally made that dream come true. Her book - Betting On You: How To Put Yourself First And (Finally) Take Control Of Your Career - will be published and released by Henry Holt & Co on January 12, 2021.

So, of course, we needed to talk about this moment in time, and what it took to accomplish this major life goal. Of course, it hasn’t always been easy, but I’m so glad that Laurie pushed through the challenges, did the hard work, and has reached the point where the book will go from a dream to reality next week.

In this episode, Laurie will share a couple of the career and life stories that are included in the book, and she’ll also unpack the framework she proposes for fixing work by fixing yourself - which includes focusing on self-leadership, well-being, continuous learning, and risk-taking.

I’m so proud of my friend. And I’m really proud of this book.

I’ve read an advance copy, have pre-order a hardback version, and will also purchase the audiobook. I hope that you’ll buy at least one copy too, and will connect with Laurie to continue to follow her journey, as well as learn from her in the future.

Topics Discussed In This Episode:

  • The steps Laurie took in the long process of selling her book proposal for Betting On You, and ultimately signing with a major publisher.
  • The project plan that Laurie and her team created to ensure that the book was written, and delivered on time.
  • The role that her husband, and a bottle of tequila, played in the receipt of the long awaited initially proposed book cover for Betting On You.
  • The framework for fixing work by fixing yourself: self leadership, well-being, continuous learning, and risk taking.
  • What the buyer of Betting On You is going to get - a fresh take on the world of work, and also life. Also, good stories, well told.
  • The role that punk rock singer Courtney Love played in Laurie deciding to put herself first, and reclaim her life.
  • Why everybody good gets fired at least once - and the lessons that can be learned in that process.
  • How using the pre-mortem process can help you approach your life and career more effectively.

My guest today is a senior executive at Workhuman®, a company that helps forward-thinking organizations energize their cultures, unlock their employees’ passion and potential, and unite around a shared purpose.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with the Workhuman® team for over 5 years now, both attending and speaking at their amazing and unique Workhuman Live annual Conference.

Each year, the conference is kicked off by the colorfully and impeccably dressed Derek Irvine, who is Workhuman’s Senior Vice President of Client Strategy and Consulting.

Derek is one of the world’s foremost experts on social recognition, continuous performance management, engagement, and the future of work, and he’s passionate about helping business leaders to elevate their vision and ambitions for their company culture.

Derek is also a renowned speaker and co-author of three books, including “Winning with a Culture of Recognition”, “The Power of Thanks”, and the latest - Making Work Human: How Human-Centered Companies are Changing the Future of Work and the World, which he co-authored along with the CEO of Workhuman, Eric Mosley.

Their book is full of practical strategies based upon wide-ranging research, extensive data and analysis, and real-world case studies, and also covers how weaving the three pillars of THANK, TALK, and CELEBRATE into the daily lives of employees can reinforce an organization’s purpose, improve productivity, and even magnify the social impact of the business.

Derek always shares a ton of great wisdom and advice in his keynotes and books, and I think you’ll really enjoy our conversation today.

You’ll also come away with some practical action steps that you can take to create a more human-centered workplace for the people that you lead and serve.

Topics Discussed In This Episode:

  • What the research shows, and the argument for why human connection makes a tremendous difference for businesses.
  • Is it possible for high-achieving and results focused cultures to achieve results while focusing on human connection?
  • What the Workhuman Charter of Workplace Rights is, and how it can help organizations to progress faster.
  • Three powerful words that bring humanity forward in the workplace - Thank, Talk, and Celebrate.
  • How technology can help organizations to create more human centered workplaces.
  • The difference between meaning and purpose at work.
  • The role that gratitude plays in motivating employees to do their best work.
  • Why expressing gratitude is more effective than saying “thank you”.
  • Three actions that leaders can take to create a more human-centered workplace.

050: Balancing a Strong Personal Brand With a High Profile Corporate Career With Amber Naslund12 Nov 202000:49:06

If you’re a regular listener of the podcast, you’ve heard me talk with several previous guests that I first connected with back in the somewhat golden days of blogging, and the beginnings of social networks like LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook.

Although I’m not sure how I originally came across today’s guest, I know that I was a regular reader of her very popular blog called Brass Tack Thinking during that time frame.

Through great writing and a relatable voice, she shared experiences, practical advice, and marketing expertise, that was extremely helpful to me, and thousands of others, in building a personal brand, and in building a business that connected with those that I wanted to serve.

Then, one day in January 2010, she wrote a blog post that was titled - “The Equestrian’s Guide to Reaching Your Goals” - and as a fellow adult amateur equestrian, I loved how she linked lessons she had learned from horseback riding to setting foundational goals for the next year.

That was it. We were destined to be the best of friends. Or, at least virtual horse buddies. :)

To this day, we love sharing, commenting and liking pictures of our horsey adventures online, and I hope we’ll actually get to meet at a horse show or an industry conference or event sometime in the future.

But, since that doesn’t look like it will be able to happen any time soon, I thought that asking her to join me on the podcast would be fun, but also really valuable for both me and you. She’s still doing great work, and continues to share her thoughts and ideas freely in order to help others.

Amber Naslund is a 20-year veteran marketer, and in that time she’s worked with some of the biggest companies, the freshest startups, and everything in between.

In her current role as a senior consultant at LinkedIn, she advises top global clients on their digital content marketing strategies, and their overall approach to using LinkedIn, while on a mission to prove that companies can build compelling, authoritative B2B brands without being dull. Amber is also the co-author of the best-selling social media handbook The Now Revolution, and when she’s not working on her next book, article, or industry talk, she’s restoring her brain cells on horseback, or spending time with her kid (who’s also an accomplished equestrian already), and her rescue dogs.

In this episode, Amber and I chat about what it was like for her to go from industry darling, to best selling author, to failed entrepreneur, and what she discovered about herself in that journey that helped her to rebuild her confidence, and fuel her success today.

We also talk about what it takes to build a strong and authentic personal brand and platform in today’s noisy world, as well as what to consider when balancing a strong personal brand with a high profile corporate career.

Topics Discussed In This Episode:

  • What an entrepreneurial failure taught Amber about herself, and how it set her up for future success.
  • What it’s like being a woman out front in the tech industry sharing your ideas.
  • Advice for someone who asks how they can build a loyal following online.
  • Amber’s thoughts on whether it’s necessary to be on all of the online platforms if you’re trying to build your personal brand.
  • The difference between being authentic and being genuine, and why it’s important for personal brands.
  • Why Amber is comfortable talking online about sensitive topics like mental health, imposter syndrome, and failures in business.
  • Amber’s journey toward understanding imposter syndrome, and how she’s come to view it as a normal, and real, part of the process.
  • How sharing your own vulnerabilities can be helpful with addressing imposter syndrome, and foster trust with your community.
  • 3 tips for those who are interesting becoming thought leaders.

On Episode 49 of the Impact Makers Podcast, I’m speaking with someone that I admire and respect, and whom I’ve learned a great deal from over the past 10 years through his podcast, his books, and also by sometimes sharing stages with him speaking at conferences and events around the world.

Todd Henry positions himself as an “arms dealer for the creative revolution”, and he teaches leaders and organizations how to establish practices that lead to everyday brilliance.

He’s the author of five books (The Accidental Creative, Die Empty, Louder Than Words, Herding Tigers, and the latest - The Motivation Code), and he speaks and consults across dozens of industries on creativity, leadership, and passion for work.

Todd is also the host of The Accidental Creative podcast, where he offers weekly tips for how to stay prolific, brilliant, and healthy, and it’s been downloaded over 10 million times.

When I saw that he was releasing his latest book - his fifth - in early October, I immediately bought a copy to keep my streak going of having read all of his books, and I also reached out to ask if he would join me on the podcast to share more about it with you. I was thrilled when he said yes right away, and I think you’ll enjoy learning more about his books, as well as how you can do the best work of your life.

Topics Discussed In This Episode:

  • How starting a podcast in 2005 as a fun side project and creative outlet led unexpectedly to a book deal with a major publisher, and invitations to speak at events all over the world.
  • Why persistence is the key to success at work and in life.
  • What a 5-time published author who hates the writing process loves about writing books.
  • How to structure your life in a way that you’re going to produce great work.
  • How to avoid the seven forces that disrupt your ability to produce work you can be proud of.
  • The five key elements needed when putting your work into the world to ensure it will resonate with people.
  • The leadership framework necessary to lead highly creative people, and to provide the stability and challenge they need to thrive.
  • How identifying your core motivators can help you understand what drives you, and also how you can mitigate any of their negative effects.

048: Creating a Life of Adventure While Making the Workplace and the World Better With Kate Bischoff29 Oct 202000:41:28

With the Impact Makers Podcast, my goal is to inspire you to identify ways that you can make a difference at work and in life — either through providing education on a topic to increase your influence, clarify your message, or lead with greater impact, or to bring you conversations with interesting guests who are doing just that.

In Episode 48, I’m chatting with someone who not only inspires me, but who often pushes me to think bigger, and to think differently, and to take action.

My friend Kate Bischoff is a mom, a former US Foreign Service worker, an employment lawyer, a social justice warrior, and an avid adventurer.

Whether she’s working with clients, doing a free webinar on the latest rules and regulations affecting the workplace, or providing manager training, she brings an educated, experienced, and often witty perspective towards bringing about her goal of making both the workplace, and the world, better for all.

Kate has an incredibly positive outlook about life, accompanied by a thirst for adventure. After listening to this episode, I hope that you’ll be inspired to think about your own life, and how you can find meaningful ways to do work that you love, while living life on your own terms.

Topics Discussed In This Episode:

  • How joining the foreign service on a whim resulted in Kate working as the Head of Human Resources for the Consulate General in Jerusalem and the US Embassy in Zambia.
  • What inspired Kate to become a lawyer, and to ultimately focus on making workplaces and the world better places.
  • Kate’s advice for how we can all add more adventure to our lives.

047: Combining the Power of Moonshot Thinking With Actionable Plans to Make an Impact in Work and Life With Ozan Varol22 Oct 202000:48:48

How many times have you heard the phrase - “Well, it’s not exactly rocket science” when someone is referring to something as easy?

I guess that means that we associate those who actually ARE rocket scientists with being exceptionally smart.

And while that’s probably true - actually it IS true - the reality is that you and I can think like a rocket scientist, without actually having to send anything into space.

So, just how do rocket scientists think? And how can you and I apply that thinking to our work and our lives in order to increase our impact?

My guest on Episode 47 of the Impact Makers Podcast has an idea. In fact, he’s been there, done that, and has written the book on it.

Ozan Varol is a rocket scientist turned award-winning professor and #1 bestselling author. He’s also one of the world’s foremost experts in creativity, innovation, and critical thinking.

Ozan grew up in Istanbul, Turkey, learned English as his second language, and moved to the United States by himself at the age of 17 to attend Cornell University and major in astrophysics in order to achieve his dream of becoming an American astronaut.

While attending Cornell, he served on the operations team for the 2003 Mars Exploration Rovers project that sent two rovers – Spirit and Opportunity – to Mars. Then in a surprising twist, ditched his dream to become an astronaut, and chose to attend law school instead, where - in true rocket scientist form - he graduated first in his class, earning the highest grade point average in the school’s history.

After practicing law for a few years, he decided to join the ranks of academia at Lewis & Clark Law School in beautiful Portland, Oregon, where he became a law professor, with a goal of influencing others to make giant leaps on Earth.

In April 2020, Ozan’s book - Think Like a Rocket Scientist: Simple Strategies You Can Use to Make Giant Leaps in Work and Life - was published, and it was recently named one Inc.com’s 6 Business Books You Need to Read in 2020

It’s also listed as one of Amazon’s Top 20 books of 2020 in three categories (non-fiction, business, and science), and was chosen as the number one pick on noted author Adam Grant’s list of the top 20 leadership books of 2020

I recently connected with Ozan, and have enjoyed learning from him through his popular weekly emails, and I’m challenging myself to apply the 9 strategies in his book to make giant leaps in my work and in my life.

I think you’ll get a lot of great takeaways from my conversation with Ozan today, and you can find links in the show notes to connect with him, buy the book, and sign up for his weekly email that shares one big idea that you can read in 3 minutes or less.

Topics Discussed In This Episode:

  • Why moonshot thinking can produce great results - even if you don’t reach what you’re aiming for.
  • What we can learn from snakes that can create space for new ideas to emerge.
  • The importance of just starting - and not waiting until everything is in place - to facilitate the emergence of new ideas.
  • The benefits of moonshot thinking during times of chaos and uncertainty.
  • How looking at the assumptions in your life and applying first principles thinking can generate original insights.
  • 3 ways to open up your mind to allow for moonshot thinking - even if you don’t consider yourself a visionary thinker.
  • What George Costanza and rocket scientists have in common - and what you can learn from both.
  • The power of putting yourself into “Airplane Mode”, and why doing nothing is more valuable than you think.

046: Creating High-Impact Presentations and Building a Profitable Speaking Business With Jennifer McClure and Dr. Daniel Crosby15 Oct 202001:07:21

I’ve had the best job in the world for over 10 years now - where I have the privilege of speaking on stages and in training rooms to groups of leaders around the world about how to increase their influence, focus strategically, and make a positive impact at work and in life.

When I stepped out on my own in 2010 to start my business, I had a little bit of experience, a healthy dose of confidence, and a whole lot of hope that I could build the relationships, and create impactful presentations that would result in a successful speaking business.

But like a lot of things in my life where I tend to jump off the cliff first, and then think about my parachute later, I wasn’t fully prepared for what it would take to find my lane, to determine how to set my speaking fees, or how to become a recognized expert.

So, queue admission into the school of hard knocks, where I’ve gained quite an education along the way, and as a result, have ultimately managed to build a business and life that I truly love.

Last year, my friend Dr. Daniel Crosby - who is a great public speaker himself, and was a also my guest on episode 14 of the Impact Makers Podcast, where he talked about understanding human behavior to do well, do good and do you - asked if I would join him on his Standard Deviations podcast to talk about what it takes to create great presentations -- and if you’re into that kind of thing, how to actually get paid to speak, which is one of the most frequently asked questions we both receive.

Over a year later, the content of our conversation is still accurate and timely, and I continue to hear from people in Dr. Crosby’s audience who have found it helpful. So I asked him if I could share it with you today, and if you’re interested in crafting great presentations, and/or getting paid to speak, I think you’ll find it helpful.

Topics Discussed In This Episode:

  • My path from HR executive to professional speaker, and why I felt like I needed at least 20 years of work experience before starting.
  • How giving away 10% of my time to help others helped me to get started as a speaker, and discover the work that I truly loved.
  • My personal recipe for crafting a great presentation.
  • What comedians and preachers can teach us about giving great presentations.
  • What adult learning theory tells us about what makes for a good speech.
  • Strategies for determining your speaking fee, what can happen if your price is too low, and how to get paid more.
  • Three books that I recommend for speakers to help with picking a lane, determining your pricing strategy, and building a memorable brand.
  • What Dr. Crosby did that 10x’d his speaking revenue.
  • 3 concrete steps to take to build a profitable speaking business.

045: Using the Content Fuel Framework to Find Your Story and Create Better Content With Melanie Deziel 08 Oct 202000:46:47

Whether you work for a corporate brand - or you’re a personal brand - we all have something in common.

In order to persuade people to buy from us, work with us, or tell others about us, we have to be able to create powerful messages and stories that connect with our intended audience, and position us for success.

So, wouldn’t it be nice if there was some type of framework that could help us to choose a focus and format to tell our story, so we could create content that serves our mission in the best possible way?

Well, thankfully, there is a framework, and my guest today literally wrote the book on it.

Melanie Deziel is a keynote speaker, award-winning branded content creator, and a lifelong storyteller on a mission to share the power of creating compelling and credible content with others.

Melanie is the Founder and Chief Content Officer of StoryFuel, a company that teaches marketers, creators and organizations how to tell better brand stories, and she’s the author of the best-selling book - The Content Fuel Framework: How to Generate Unlimited Story Ideas.

I’ve enjoyed reading Melanie’s book, and have found the 10 x 10 content fuel framework helpful as I’ve had to re-think how I connect with my community, and share my message while speaking on stages around the world is not an option.

In our conversation today, Melanie shares how her experience as a journalist and content strategist for some of the most well-known companies and brands in the world was helpful to her when she decided to start and market her own business, and how she’s now on a mission to help others to create content that they can be proud of, and will get their messages heard.

Topics Discussed In This Episode:

  • How the storytelling process used by corporate brands is similar to telling your own story as a personal brand.
  • The importance of understanding what is important to you, the message that you want to convey to your audience, and how your personal experiences can provide relevance and timeliness about your topic.
  • How Melanie applied her experience as a journalist and with storytelling to market her business once she went out on her own.
  • How volunteering to help sales people with client pitches led to Melanie becoming a successful international keynote speaker.
  • How the 10 x 10 grid of the Content Fuel Framework evolved from a series of presentations, to a workshop, then a keynote, and ultimately a book.
  • The challenges associated with launching a book during a global pandemic, and how Melanie has gotten creative to promote the book in non-traditional ways.
  • How to choose a focus and format to tell your story, and to create content that serves your mission in the best possible way.
  • Two things that a company - or a person - needs to consider before creating and sharing content, in order to get their message heard.
