Imagine walking down a street today.

No Pret A Manger.
No Costa.
No Cafe Nero.

As an ardent coffee fiend, I couldn’t live without it.

Rewind to 1986.

Our scone-scoffing, beer-boshing, tea-guzzling Britain was crowned the “Graveyard of Coffee”.

A slumpy-grumpy stupor.

If you wanted a cuppa joe, you’d have to go to swanky-hotel.

Then. Thank heavens.

Two mad scientists. Steven Macatonia and Jeremy Torz. Had just returned slurping up the coffee movement in San Fransisco.

They started UNION and the coffee movement from their Mum's garden shed.

No Union Hand-Roasted Coffee. No Starbucks. No Starbucks. No Coffee movement.

Outside: cold, black November evening.

Inside: a warm, cosy flat in Twickenham.

Saturday’s movie about to start.

Hot curry on his lap.

Suddenly.

The phone rang and rang and rang and rang.

He gave a piercingly-curt look to his wife.
