It has been almost a year since I lasted released a podcast episode, and so I felt like I needed to explain, while providing an opportunity to feel seen, heard and validated if you have found it hard to speak up and be yourself too. 

So you will hear me talk about personal stuff, how I have been feeling about the photo and video industry, and the wedding industry. But most importantly how I have waited to work through how I was feeling without making snap decisions or judgements, because I hope to be able to find a way to be happy and content with the industry and my job!

The guest on this episode is a great example of constantly innovating and moving with the times whilst continuing to create outstanding work. 

Jeff Wood is a wedding filmmaker who started capturing weddings back around 2008 and has worked with celebrity and luxury clients as well as being an influence for many UK wedding videographers over the past decade. 

But rather than just sticking with the status quo, Jeff has embraced the way technology has started to change the industry and has started using his iPhone to provide new opportunities to be creative. 

We discuss everything from keeping the name of his business and his choice of equipment open so he could do either photo or video. To sitting on private jets with celebrities, judging awards, monitoring the next generation of wedding filmmakers and what the future holds for wedding filmmakers.

If you are into filming, cinematography and technology then you will really enjoy listening to Jeff describing his processes and how you can use your phone as a high end cinema camera.

In the middle of 2024 there is so much talk in the wedding industry, specifically amongst wedding photographers and wedding videographers about how enquiries are down, bookings are down. 

The general concusses appears to be that it is more challenging to run a small wedding business at the moment, so for photographers and filmmakers we wanted to discuss ways to create opportunities to make money and develop additional revenue streams. 

And as usual, we have a good laugh along the way and share our experiences of trying, testing and implementing those additional opportunities to earn more money from using our cameras and the skills we have developed over the years.

On Episode 3 of the Wedding Mavericks podcast I am interviewing Jane & Ben, the owners of New Craven Hall.

This unique, industrial/urban venue in Leeds was transformed from  a warehouse home to a nightclub, into a stunning wedding venue in just 6 weeks by Jane and Ben, after they identified a gap in the market, to create a wedding venue that people like them would want to celebrate in.

This was such a great story to listen to and there was so much great information that came out of it for anyone starting a wedding business. The real takeaway is inspiration, as there story highlights that anyone can take an idea and turn it into a reality without huge amounts of money or industry specific experience.

For this episode I wanted to revisit a topic from episode 81 where I talked about how the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 could be a game changing cameras for hybrid shooters. On this episode I get to chat with a brilliant, multi award wining documentary style wedding photographer Erica Hawkins who originally came from a background in filmmaking.

It is that time of the year when if you live and work in the northern hemisphere you will be winding down from wedding season and trying to stay motivated to get through the editing list before the ball drops for next year! It is rare these days that I get excited by a piece of camera equipment. Getting new stuff at this point is like getting a new car, its great, but when you realise it does the same thing as your last car (gets you for A to B) the novelty wears off pretty quick. A new camera now is just a replacement for the old one that does the same thing, but a fraction better than the old one. 

But every now and then you see an opportunity. You can see a potential for being able to use something to do things you couldn't do before. That's what happened for me when they announced the DJI Osmo Pocket 3. This fairly cheap, small and unassuming camera might just be the thing I have been looking for to be able to elevate and create further efficiencies in my workflow as a hybrid photo and video shooter. The best part is, if this is what it can do, think of where we will be in a few years time - that's even more exciting. The future is here!

So I bought it and in this episode I discuss my initial thoughts, its initial use at a real wedding and how I plan to integrate it into my set-up going forwards.

In this rather ramble-esk  episode, I explain how I found out through a Facebook poll that it no longer really matters if you are a photographer or videographer, you can capture/create/post whatever you like and it is totally acceptable! 

Does this mean there is no line in the sand anymore? Is there no distinction between your role or job at a wedding or on a commercial project? Can you literally just please yourself despite what you were hired to do? I am not sure....but according to a fairly large sized response to a question of our peers here in the UK, this appears to be the case. 

I do think this is a great piece of evidence that attitudes towards hybrid content creation is changing and that everyone has started to shift their mindsets to a different way of doing things. Here is to the future of lines becoming even more blurred when it comes to photography, videography, filmmaking and creating content!

In this episode we are looking at how photography and filmmaking began and how they have evolved over time so that we can make predictions on where the mediums of photo and video are going. 

For a couple of hundred years the progress made in image capture and preservation was relatively slow, but in the past 20 years the industry has changed beyond recognition. The speed at which technology is now changing the way we can view/watch images or videos is fuelling the appetite for visual content in a way that it never has before. 

It is changing the format, mediums and methods that we consume audio visual content. It is influencing artistic and aesthetic styles, and it is changing peoples priorities when it comes to expression and creation. 

Where is the industry going? Are photography and videography still separate mediums/processes? Will they continue to be in the future?

In this episode I go through why I think this year is the year that Hybrid Photography and Videography shooting will completely blow up. Sure, the past few years there has been a rise of people using both photo and video to tell stories, particularly to market themselves and we have seen the popularity of content creation becoming an integral part of all our businesses. 

But I really believe we are at a tipping point where video is no longer an afterthought or a tag on to what consumer / clients / couples want and what businesses need to offer. I feel this year is when it becomes integral to being a creator and technology is almost at a point where there is no longer a reason to not capture both still and moving images as a part of your work. 

It's the start of a New Year, so a great time to consider how you want to take your business and your storytelling skills forward into the future. If you have been sat on the fence about trying to use video or photo in your work then hopefully this episode will provide the motivation to take some action, experiment and see where hybrid shooting could take your business.

Yes, after recording 62 episodes we have decided to change the name of the podcast. You could say this is a terrible decision, but there is a really good reason that you can hear part of in the previous episode (62) and we will be discussing in the next episode when we dive into a full episode of the new format. 

Hybrid photography and videography is growing exponentially. We can see this in all aspects of what we do from the wedding days, to the enquiries and the general business functions like marketing. No longer is video an add on, video is becoming as important as taking stills to both our couples and to us as business owners. 

We want to create a place to discuss things that cover both photo, video and how we will use the tools we have and the skills we can learn to be able to do both of them to a high standard. This is a place to innovate, adapt and a space to do that with no judgement or negativity. This will be a place for you (and us) to grow. We hope you com join us. 

For now, here is an introduction to the new name and we hope you will continue to listen. Thank you!

In this episode of the podcast we are discussing different experiences of real weddings from the past 12 months and how they have either felt like winners, losers or a bit of both.

Obviously we love capturing weddings and we really enjoy the majority of weddings we are invited to capture, but some can be the most perfect days with the perfect couples and can be really fruitful for your business and on a personal level. Other experiences might feel like you came away from the situation losing out in some way and often this can be an unexpected outcome. 

The purpose of this discussion is to share some of our up and down experiences of recent, hopefully you will be able to relate to this in some way. The key takeaway being that you cannot always predict what something will be like or what will happen next and often our expectations of something; either good or bad, can be the thing that creates extreme feelings of positivity and negativity. These can be the feelings that cause the most struggles when running a creative business.

It can be one of the most difficult things to decide upon when it comes to running your wedding photography/videography business, with lots of contrasting opinions and influences to consider.

But what should be informing your decisions?

As the business owner you should have a clear strategy which underpins your pricing, having taken into account the costs of doing business, and you own personal goals for income. 

Most of all, you need to be comfortable with what you charge.

We discuss the changes we have seen over the past six years, and explain the pricing journey we have been on.

We hope you’re all well and have had a great week so far?

On this week’s episode we’re highlighting how important it is to know your numbers!

A way we can all have piece of mind in knowing we have the right amount of income, enquiries and bookings to make this a reality, and to feel empowered to price our services confidently, is to fully understand our numbers!

We discuss starting with calculating your personal living costs, the costs of doing business, and move onto the deductions you’ll need to know about ie: Tax, NI, Pension contributions, how to calculate profit and finish by highlighting the importance of making sure you’re consistently tracking all of your financial and performance data.

Jules prepared a helpful breakdown example of calculating exactly how much revenue your business would need to make if you needed £30,000 to live.

(Figures are created for illustration purposes and using UK Tax & National insurance deductions, as at January 2023).

£30,000 per year to live

£6000 business expenses

£30,000 + 6000 = £36,000

UK tax allowance - £12,570

Therefore, taking the £30,000 per year needed to live and deduct the tax allowance of £12570 = £17,430 

(Now consider 20% tax and around 11% National insurance of £17,430, would be around £5229 in deductions) and added together (£22,659) + 12570 = £35,229

So, your personal expenses to live of £35,229 + £6,000 Business expenses = £41,229 

**Which means that to earn and enjoy £30,000 in real terms each year, your business would need to generate £41,229 as a minimum in REVENUE.
