34. Loren Greiff: A Career by Design, not by Default

dimanche 30 mai 2021Duration 33:14

Send us a text

"On December 2nd, 2019, I was done. That day, I handed in my resignation for a job I spent my entire career wanting & working for.
The truth is ... I didn’t want to stay. My boss didn’t see my value, I wasn’t performing well & the culture, not a fit. At 56, after over thirty years in creative roles as VP at J. Walter Thompson, on the client-side & my last woo hoo as a Managing Consultant, I jumped back into the job market. Realizing all over again how painful & difficult the process was. That's precisely why I started Portfoliorocket.com."

If you're in the mood for powerful storytelling full of hope, suspense and drama, then you are in for a treat!

Loren Greiff comes from the world of Advertising, Marketing and Recruiting. And has pivoted to entrepreneurship during the biggest pandemic the world has ever seen.
How did she do it? What does it take to get hired in Advertising for roles that aren't, well, advertised?

Listen to the show to find out!

*Gets into HBS.

“I had 6 job offers during MBA campus interviews.”
*Takes the lowest paying job, with pretty much the worst interview experience, ever.

“I wanted to move to a country where they speak French or German”

The episode is called: Embrace the Unexpected

My guest today: Brenda Bence has built mega brands for Fortune 100 companies like Procter & Gamble where she headed multi-million dollar brands, first based in the U.S., then in Europe and then in Asia.

There’s so much in this chat:

-How she got hired by P&G (lots of giggles guaranteed)
-How she got hired by her very first paying client

Each story is unforgettable and the 51 minutes fly by!

32. Stefano Di Lollo: How to Redesign your Career

samedi 15 mai 2021Duration 40:59

Send us a text

I don't know anyone who doesn't love a good reinvention story.
Especially career reinvention.

Think of the most famous people in the world, and they've reinvented themselves.
And ordinary people like you and me? Yes, us too.

But to go from industrial design, to creative strategy, to innovation, to teaching college students, to now helping leaders be the leader they want to be...

How do you even start?
How do you deal with that fear?
And can social media help or hinder?

To talk about all of this and more, I'm delighted to have Stefano Di Lollo on the podcast.

In this episode, Stefano shares the exact steps he took to leave a safe, well paying career in industrial design and the journey he took to the Leadership Coach and Facilitator path he enjoys today.

'Carpe Diem' is a famous Latin phrase roughly translating as 'Sieze the Day!'

Our next guest embodies this spirit and how!

What is it like to work out of a boat? Not on holiday, not for fun, but as your new permanent office? Are you ready to 'Seas the day'?

I invite you to google search the following:

a. Digital Nomad
b. Laptop lifestyle

I can bet you, the images that come up are of 20 something's on a beach with Ray Bans and a drink. Am I right?

The last person you would imagine leading a digitally nomadic life is a CEO with 25 years of senior corporate experience.

In his corporate career, Abel Staveren has held CFO and CEO positions in the shipping industry with postings in London, Singapore, Norway, Switzerland and Luxembourg

Now, Abel and his wife Adrienne travel full-time as digital nomads. They divide the year into three or four blocks, spending each block in a different country. In 2020, Q1 was spent in Stellenbosch South Africa, Q2 in Singapore, Q3 sailing their boat back from Scotland to the Netherlands and Q4 in Algarve, Portugal. They just arrived back from Portugal and are getting the boat ready to go sailing around the UK.

In this fascinating episode, Abel shares:

> The highly unusual circumstances in which he was hired at his first job

> What prompted him to stop traditional work where he needed to be physically present, and become a digital nomad - the answer will surprise you

> How he got hired by his first paying client

> His favourite career advice, which he learnt from the creator of the most famous syndicated daily comic strip in the world

> How a cuss word is the best piece of financial advice you've probably ever heard

This episode has been an eye opener for me and it will certainly be for you, hope you enjoy listening! So let's lift the achor and sail into this delightful conversation.

28: Bob Burg: How to become a 'Go-Giver'

dimanche 18 avril 2021Duration 34:49

Send us a text

Bob Burg is a hugely successful writer and sought after speaker who’s built his entire life’s work on the concept of GIVING.

His magnum opus, a book called “The Go-Giver”, co-authored with John David Mann, is a  Wall Street Journal  and BusinessWeek  Bestseller, and has sold nearly a million copies and translated into 29 languages.  Arianna Huffington, Seth Godin and Stephen Covey recommend it as a must read.

Here's a quote I love from his book: "Most people just laugh when they hear that the secret to success is giving…. Then again, most people are nowhere near as successful as they wish they were.”

In this podcast, Bob and I have a rich converstion on:

- How he started his career and why he needed to pivot pretty quickly
- How he started his firm Burg Communications and what helped him make it successful
- His definitions of selling, giving, price and value
- His views on the reputation of 'sales' over the past 40 years
- How a job seeker can use principles from the book to create value
... and much, much more

Whether you are a job seeker, business owner or an employee, I promise you: this conversation on creating a giving and value based mindset will definitely help your career.
