I am excited to interview Priyanka Shinde today to help you accelerate your leadership growth in Tech. Priyanka is a seasoned Silicon Valley tech leader with over 20 years experience in engineering, product management, and program management. She has previously worked at tech giants like Meta and startups like Cruise where she led highly technical teams launch cutting-edge products in the field of Autonomous Vehicles, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR), and Advertising Tech. She received her MBA from North Carolina State University and Masters in Computer Science from Arizona State University. Creating a culture of connection, authenticity, and empathy within organizations is her passion which she has cultivated into an executive coaching career helping leaders accelerate their ambitious goals.

 

In her free time, you can find Priyanka teaching Bollywood dance fitness classes, running or hiking the beautiful Bay Area trails and spending quality time with her husband and son.

As one of the only women in the room for most of her career, Richa has seen first-hand the struggles of women as they navigate the corporate ladder. Dan started this platform with 3 other science communicators a year ago in Jan 2018. With 10,000 plus strong following, the SciCommunity is full of incredible women and male allies who are determined to uplift each other and support each other in communicating science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. With a 4 1/2-year-old daughter, women in STEM is a critical part of Jonathan's life. Our guest today, Jonathan Gerlach is an educator, STEMnist and a keynote speaker. He gives keynotes globally and in every keynote highlights his daughter and the need to inspire and empower more girls in STEM activities. As a STEM advocate, he leads the #STEM4All twitter chat. When I first started this podcast I was so surprised when Fanuel took the time to call me and guide me through the early days of HER STEM STORY. Since then he has supported me on every social media platforms. Today we are talking to Fanuel Mundi, Co-Founder and Co-Director, The Stem Advocacy Institute (SAI) and the Assistant Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Harvard University. Fanuel supports women in STEM efforts at Harvard by promoting diverse recruitment efforts for their PhD program. At SAI, Fanuel builds tools and collaborates with organizations supporting women in science. For example, Stories in Science is a tool we built that currently features many stories from women in STEM around the world. They are now working with teachers to include these stories in an effort to supplement classroom instruction. Let's talk to Fanuel to learn more about HIS STEM Story.

This is the 2nd part of our 2 part series of our live recording at the #MYSTEMSTORY at UMass Centre of Springfield, which was a part of the #MASSSTEMWEEK celebrations. Listen to Episode 36 for the first part. 

The STEM Starter Academies at Holyoke, Springfield Technical, Berkshire, and Greenfield community colleges, along with the Society of Women Engineers affiliate at STCC, sponsored the networking workshop called #MySTEMStory. Organizers want to build a network for Pioneer Valley women in STEM. The Oct. 24 gathering featured a panel discussion and Q&A was led by us.

The discussion covers how community colleges are working on bridging the gap in STEM fields by making education more affordable, accessible and creating a community to help women students. We also discuss what inspired the panelists to choose STEM. 

Panelists:

1) Carlo Velez Garcia - Originally from Cialis, Puerto Rico. She is a mother and alumni of HCC and Smith College. She has a Masters of Science and now works as a science teacher at Van Sickle Middle School, Springfield. 

2) Michelle Rame -  A non-traditional student, she started school 6 years out of high school after working in the non-profit world. She is an HCC/NSF scholar alumni and is currently a Senior Civil Engineering Student at Western New England University. She is a STEM Ambassador at HCC. She also spent 4 months in China, building a house in China's 2018 SoDecathlonalon. 

3) Mary Berrio - Mary was born in Cali, Colombia and came to the US in 2009. She is the first generation to obtain a higher education degree in her family. She is both a Berkshire Community College and UMass Amherst Alumni and she received her Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. She currently works as the systems engineer for the Littoral Combat Ship ( LCS). She also actively participates in the local Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers.
