Dr. Dan DeBehnke is an emergency care physician who became a health system CEO and now is an advisor to executives of healthcare systems. Needless to say, the last couple of months he’s been monitoring the effects of the COVID pandemic and evaluating how healthcare systems can best respond in this time of decreased profit margins. 

Dr. DeBehnke believes that, like it or not, the genie is out of the bottle, and telemedicine is here to stay. Though it’s not ideal for every situation, telemarketing has positive ramifications for both the patient and physician. Dr. DeBehnke believes healthcare systems need to revisit their pre-COVID strategic plans, paying special attention to pricey fixed assets.

Finally Dr. DeBehnke gives invaluable advice to fellow physicians who are interested in moving into leadership positions. In a nutshell: first, excel at your trade, and then get out of your comfort zone.

Dr. Stephanie Lahr is board certified in internal medicine and clinical informatics, and her career path led her to the intersection of medicine and technology. Today she’s the CIO of Regional Health in South Dakota. Her career path wasn’t strategic but was impacted by a hurricane, an interview, personal goals, and a genuine interest in seeing healthcare advance technologically. It’s a story you don’t want to miss.

In today’s episode, Dr. Lahr shares how some honest feedback helped her reevaluate how her passion for her work was having a detrimental impact on her communication style and team-building efforts. That painful-but-needed feedback has had a lasting impact on her own leadership style. 

She also highlights a challenge in healthcare that is not often discussed. Physicians are trained to be problem solvers and to be responsible for outcomes. They’re not trained to empower others, to delegate, to lead a team. Sometimes their acquired skills are actually in opposition to what’s needed to be a good leader.
