dimanche 17 août 2025Duration 38:19

This week we are joined by Ellen (ellen.tuzi) - a body image and intuitive eating counsellor - to chat all things food relationships and our children.

We chat about:

    • Avoiding food hierarchies and the impact of diet culture on us, as parents.
    • How to use neutral language around food and food choices to reduce the morality or emotions associated with some foods.
    • Navigating dietary differences or picky eaters.
    • How to guide our kids (and really, ourselves) to trust our bodies, enjoy food and mealtimes, and untangle a lot of the harmful messaging that exists around food, bodies and health.

  • Ellen has some recommendations for anyone interested to explore more:

    Books

    • How to Raise an Intuitive Eater- Sumner Brooks and Amee Severson

    • Intuitive Eating, 4th Edition, by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch

Emily on single parenting, queer identity, self-entrepreneurship, co-parenting + neurodivergence

    dimanche 10 août 2025Duration 37:06

Hello! We are back from our winter break with an incredible episode with Emily, founder of the @emily.the.meal.dealer, and a queer, single parent.

Emily (they/them) has done something pretty amazing - they have built a business grounded in community and care while navigating a marriage separation, figuring out co-parenting, and getting to know themselves as a queer person.

We got the opportunity and joy to speak with Emily 3 years on from the point of building their business, and it was such a privilege to hear their reflections and insights in looking back. Emily is kind, thoughtful, and generous with their story.

We spoke about the financial side of separation and single parenting, and the balance of needing to make money while still being in the trenches of early parenting. Emily shared the journey of integrating their queer identity, survival mode after life upheaval, the necessity of platonic love and community, and the growth of their business - weekly meal packages and community funded mutual aid meals in Naarm/Melbourne.

    Season 1 · Episode 5

    lundi 13 février 2023Duration 01:05:42

In this episode, I'm joined by Emily (she/her), a mother who found herself navigating the difficult breakdown of a 10-year relationship (and recent marriage) while parenting her young toddler. Emily talks about the challenges of not only becoming a single parent, but also being single for the first time since she was 16 years old. She also speaks on the struggles of minimal postpartum support and the sense of loss of not having a relationship with her own mother.

We delve into the ups and downs of Emily's breastfeeding and weaning journey, sleep challenges, and co-sleeping. She also discusses the close bond she shares with her sister, Hannah, who shares her story in episode 4, and how they have supported each other through their respective motherhood journeys.

Despite the hardships, Emily has shown incredible strength and resilience as a mother, and we are honoured to have her share her story with us.

Tanvi on returning to work, childcare, cultural differences in parenting, mixed feeding + prioritising self care,

    Season 1 · Episode 3

    lundi 30 janvier 2023Duration 46:19

In episode 1, I interview Tanvi (she/her). Tanvi and her husband are from India and have lived in Melbourne for 6 years, and they are first time parents to their 14 month old daughter.

Before becoming a parent, Tanvi worked as a classroom teacher working with kids and teenagers with special needs. She has a keen interest in emotional literacy and social emotional teaching. She has previously worked in schools across India and Melbourne as a special needs educator, teacher trainer and teacher aide. And, as we discuss in this episode, she recently began doing this work again.

Tanvi and I talk about the challenges of entering parenthood when most of her family still live in India, the feelings of mum guilt around feeding decisions, navigating cultural differences in parenting, the changes in relationships and identity after having a baby, and the importance of prioritising self care in the process.

Seven types of rest that matter in motherhood

    lundi 21 avril 2025Duration 17:30

In today’s snappy ep we are discussing the “7 types of rest” through the lens of motherhood. Have you heard of them?

This is such an important conversation for mothers and new parents, when our most obvious form of rest (AKA sleep) goes out the window. We chat through the 7 types and how they can show up in motherhood.

The 7 types of rest were identified by Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith, a US physician. She describes ways to incorporate rest and restoration in these 7 different aspects of our lives: physical, mental, emotional, social, sensory, creative, and spiritual.

Feeling confident, competent and regulated as a mother with Jane, an occupational therapist

    lundi 14 avril 2025Duration 42:14

Today's ep is with Jane of @doingmotherhood. Jane is a mother of two and a mental health occupational therapist specialising in matrescence and the perinatal period, currently working at @themindfulbirthmovement

    Jane joins us to discuss:

    • Matrescence from an occupational therapist’s POV and why it can be such a challenging time for our sense of self, confidence and functioning
    • What a mental health perinatal occupational therapist does and how they can help mothers navigate changes in their functioning or achieve their specific goals (whether that’s related to your pelvic floor, returning to work, your identity, or more)
    • Nervous system regulation, both daily strategies to build your capacity and things to do in times of dysregulation in you or your children
    • How understanding our values can help us to navigate transitions and shifting identities
  • This is such an insightful episode. Jane describes how motherhood is unique because most of us are really thrown into parenthood without any real opportunity to learn or practice the skills and tasks that come with mothering. It makes sense then, that our sense of self and confidence may be rocked through the experience, and that this can have flow-on impacts to our functioning. Jane shares why this all occurs and what we can do about it.

Jane offers the newly launched ‘Birth of Us’ antenatal program - a program designed to help parents step into parenthood with confidence and practical knowledge.

Resources, counselling and support are also available at The Mindful Birth Movement.
