Tonight we’ll be continuing my series on “deconstructing a haunted house”, where I go room to room in a house reading experiences that take place there. Tonight, we’ll be going down to the basement…. perhaps the creepiest room in the house, but is it the most haunted?

I read first-hand experiences of odd and unsettling encounters, such as small humanoids that run along the baseboards and hide under sinks, crashed flying saucers, a staircase that mysteriously appears one day and one day only, and more. In between stories I’ll provide my thoughts and commentary, muse on the character of the basement in dream symbolism, media, and the collective unconscious, and consider where this rooms fits in terms of being the “most haunted” room in the house.

Have you ever seen something strange in your room at night when you are waiting to fall asleep? Many people have, and the experiences are quite varied, from abstract shapes to bizarre dismembered apparitions. Many people are familiar with the fairies of Irish folklore, but a similar sort of being is also described in many cultures across the world (if not all of them), bearing similarities in appearance, behavior, and legends, but called by different names.

Tonight we will examine what could be considered fairies or elves in a variety of cultures, such as Malay, Native American, Mexican, Filipino, and more. These will be explored through a mixture of first-hand experiences pulled from forums and surveys, and folklore referenced from books, articles, and web sources.

Even with similarities abound, the human experience ceaselessly proves to be vastly varied, and ever-so fascinating.

Tonight we will be reading first-hand encounters with bizarre animals. Some of these creatures look similar to the natural animals they resemble, but something is… off. Maybe it’s the size, or that it walks on its hind-legs, or that it speaks human language…

I grabbed these stories from Reddit, Your Ghost Stories, and The National Cryptid Society. In between reading the experiences, I’ll explain some folklore that relates to the sightings of these various odd creatures. The “animals” seen vary from bipedal, overall-wearing house cats, humanoid rabbits, to giant pigs; and folklore is pulled from Japan, Portugal, the Philippines, and more… Thanks for tuning in.

Tonight we will be looking at a few “unusual” reports from the Fairy Census, an ongoing academic research project conducted by Dr. Simon Young. This survey gathers anonymous first-hand experiences with fairies, but many of the submissions deviate from the modern “stereotypical” and commercially accepted image of what a fairy looks like. I’m going to read a handful of reports that are far from whimsical winged pixies; and yet the witness purposefully submitted their experience to the Fairy Census. The intention of the census is to gather data on the modern attitudes towards fairies, so what do these “unorthodox” encounters tell us about the current ideas and beliefs regarding these folkloric beings?

Tonight’s episode concerns the very strange, specific, and seemingly rare phenomenon that I’m calling “little doctors”. So far I’ve found only three accounts that share the same very distinct details of seeing short-statured doctors and/or nurses at one’s bedside when they otherwise shouldn’t be there. This is no dream and certainly not a house call from actual human doctors, so who are these bizarre visitors?

I’m grateful to be joined by two guests (Timothy Renner from Strange Familiars podcast, and artist and experiencer Alex Hood) who relate their encounters with the little doctors. Together, we will also read and discuss a third account I found on the website Your Ghost Stories that bears striking similarity to their experiences.
