GITM 119: Tsurune: The Linking Shot - How To Sequel | An Analysis23 Sep 202300:35:20

Tsurune's Second Season was a blast and an improvement to its predecessor in almost every conceivable way. But what exactly is a sequel and what makes a Tsurune: Tsunagari no Issha a great one? In this episode I try to wrap my head around anime sequels in the context of the show and make some conclusions as to what they are.

GITM 118: The 'Forgotten' Anime of 2022 | An Analysis10 Jul 202300:39:48

Get In The Mecha is officially back! In this episode I'm catching up on some of the analysis that I missed by talking about some of the sleeper hits of 2022 that I think are worth going back to. How does Tatami Time Machine Blues differ from The Tatami Galaxy? How does The Girl From The Other Side configure into the current anime landscape? What can music videos teach us about storytelling? All this and more in this episode.

Thanks so much for your patience over the first half of this year (and before that) - I'm graduating this month which means I finally have the time to produce the podcast consistently again. I can't wait to share all of my thoughts on a regular basis like before!

GITM 109: There's A Lot Of Anime Coming Out In 2022 | A Preview27 Dec 202100:29:53

The new year is approaching and a there's a lot of anime on the way. On this week's episode of Get In The Mecha I take a look at the anime projects that I'm most excited for and talk about who is working on them. And at the end I give my take on an important question - can this much anime be sustained by the industry?

GITM 26: The Perfect Dance (Neon Genesis Evangelion Episode 9 Analysis)11 Jan 202000:44:16

As I have mentioned multiple times, Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995) is one of my favourite anime of all time and since I have not looked at the show for a while on the podcast, I thought that it would be nice to take a break from our arc analyses and look closely at one of my favourite episodes in the medium, NGE Episode 9. In this episode I explore the idea of 'maturity', the hedgehog's dilemma's role in this part of the narrative and more. On the side, I contemplate as to whether I should watch the Berserk film trilogy, I share my thoughts on the new yuri shojo manga I have been reading (NTR: Netsuzou Trap) and chat a tiny bit about Fire Force.

GITM 25: Understanding Sakuga | Animation & Cinematography Analysis03 Jan 202000:39:16

There’s been a lot of discussion about sakuga and animation in the anime community at the moment, so in this episode I am deciding to tackle the topic. How has the medium evolved from a technical standpoint to get to where we are today? What exactly are ‘sakuga animations’? What pieces of anime stand out in the scene in terms of how they’re animated? These are all topics which will be dissected and analysed in this episode. On the side I talk about yet another borderline-H manga I’ve been reading (Koibana Onsen) and how I am trying my best to get my head around the Marley Arc of the Attack on Titan manga.

Anime / Manga Discussed: Urashima Tarou, Saru Kani Gassen, Tetsuwan Atom, Reconciliation, Ping Pong the Animation, Mob Psycho 100, Koibana Onsen, Attack on Titan.

GITM 24: The Battle of the Trost District Arc (Attack On Titan Analysis & Review)27 Dec 201900:48:47

Since I've milked out all the analysis possible from Attack On Titan's Return to Shiganshina Arc, I think it is only fair to look at the arc(s) that got us there in the first place. That means that we have to travel back to Trost, the location of the first battle in 'modern day'. In this episode, I will be taking a dive into the main debate that the arc plays with, rationality versus instinctual behaviour. I will also discuss where the arc excels from a technical standpoint and my overall feeling for this part of the show. On the side, I talk about my experience with the conclusion of Berserk's Golden Age Arc and I share a few of my thoughts on Grave of the Fireflies (1988).

GITM 23: Anime Lessons for the Year | An Analysis20 Dec 201900:38:06

The year (and the decade) of anime has concluded and although I did a more in depth analysis of the decade as a whole, I didn't really do a personal look through what I've learnt and how I felt within that. So in this episode, I will be taking a personal look at what I have taken from the anime I have watched recently. On the side, I talk about my alternative tie-hen experience and Hideo Kojima.

GITM 21: Unskippable Openings (2019 Anime Opening Analysis & Review)06 Dec 201900:48:57

As 2019 is coming to a close, I thought it would be appropriate to take a journey through some of my favourite openings from this year in anime. In this episode, I take a step back from deep analysis and flick through some of my favourites, what makes them stand out and how the audio and visual components work together in order to form such lovely pieces. On the side, I talk a bit about The Golden Age Arc of the Berserk manga and my recent obsession with TK from Ling Tosite Sigure. Anime Discussed: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind, Vinland Saga, The Quintessential Quintuplets, Mob Psycho 100 II, Assassins Pride, Fire Force, Dororo, Sword Art Online: Alicization - War of the Underworld, We Never Learn!, Black Clover, Attack On Titan and Promare.

GITM 20: The Promare Review (Promare (2019) Analysis & Review)29 Nov 201900:46:35

Promare has been rolling out more and more throughout the west and I finally got the chance to see it, which means I can now do a bit of analysis! Without any spoilers, I will be taking a look at this action-packed original movie made by Studio Trigger. In this episode I'll be diving into the context behind Promare and Studio Trigger, the 'out of the box' narrative styles of Hiroyuki Imaishi & Kazuki Nakashima and whether the film 'lacks substance' on a thematic level. On the side, I discuss my run in with the h-manga, Nozoki Ana (2009) and the beauty of Millennium Actress (2002).

GITM 19: The Action Arc (Neon Genesis Evangelion Analysis)22 Nov 201900:44:53

The Action Arc welcomes Asuka Langley to the team, making her the Third Child to pilot the Eva units. Her presence is definitely not one that can go unnoticed, being the overbearing, boisterous she is. As a result, the entire dynamic between the characters is reworked and now waiting to be explored. In this episode, I will be taking a dive into Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995) for a second time, looking into how the dynamic changes between the characters in this arc, Asuka's behaviour, the slow development of the Human Instrumentality Project and more. On the side, I briefly lay out what I thought of Promare (2019) and my initial understanding of the Berserk (1989) manga. There is also a brief announcement at the beginning of the episode in regards to the show going forward.

GITM 18: The Shambles Reborn (Tokyo Ghoul:re Season 2 Analysis & Review)15 Nov 201900:41:00

As Episode 2 proved, I am not particularly a big fan of the Tokyo Ghoul:re anime adaptation... which I have decided to make myself suffer even more with an analysis and review of the 2nd Season. However, in this episode, I will make a greater attempt to pick up on the parts that I liked in regards to narrative and music. This session I will be doing a general analysis of the 2nd Season of Tokyo Ghoul:re, how the narrative remains 'Kaneki-centric' and whether the show has a solid conclusion. On the side, I reflect on the ending of Dumbbell Nan Kilo Moteru?, what makes a good ending and my continuous obsession with romance manga.

GITM 17: The Return To Shiganshina Arc (Attack On Titan Analysis & Review)08 Nov 201900:40:46

Attack On Titan's Return to Shiganshina Arc makes yet another appearance on the podcast! This is an arc analysis to end all arc analyses of this arc in the anime / manga, so I will be doing a general overview, looking at the parts of the show that I did not cover in Episode 5 and Episode 12. In this episode, I will be taking a look at how Isayama's writing on a structural level is particularly important in this part of the narrative, the variety of layers & dimensions that the arc has to offer and the greatness of the ending to the arc (as well as what it means going forwards). On the side, I talk about what I have been watching this season (Fall 2019), the beauty of the Assassins Pride opening, the 'Wave, Listen to Me!' anime adaptation and more!

GITM 108: Heike Monogatari - Why Do Visual Metaphors Matter? | An Analysis12 Dec 2021

What ties rich historical narratives like Heike Monogatari together? On this episode of Get In The Mecha I complete my trilogy of discussions on Heike Monogatari by taking a look at the anime's smart use of visual metaphors. This week I dive into the various symbols the show uses, what we can learn from them and most importantly - why are they so important in historical anime.

GITM 16: The Festival Arc (Blue Exorcist Analysis & Review)02 Nov 201900:42:39

The third installment in my Blue Exorcist Analysis is here! We have now left the Kyoto Saga arc and now a new problem has come into the forefront, but this time within True Cross Academy. The balance between good and bad will be evaluated, alongside the conflicting positions of Assaih and Gehenna. GITM 15: The Great Conspiracy (Dark Days: The Casting Analysis & Review)25 Oct 201900:29:44

Dark Days: The Casting is the second and final part of the Metal prelude, which will be the focus of this episode. The Casting questions the path that Batman is so adamant to go down and gives us doubts as to whether or not it was a good idea to continue pursuing the 'darkness'. In this episode, I will be discussing the role of other characters (primarily the Joker) in disrupting the mood and making us question Batman's journey into the dark, the advantages of a two-part prologue and my overall impressions on The Casting alongside Dark Days as a whole.

The last time I spoke about Boruto, we discussed the first one hundred episodes and how they started to set the tone of the show as a whole. In this episode, I've decided to take a deeper dive, analysing arcs on an individual level. This time, I am looking at the Shin / Sarada Uchiha Arc. What is the nature of the character 'Shin', how well is Sakura vs. Shin executed and how successful is the arc as a whole?

GITM 12: The Song Of Battle (Attack On Titan OP 5 Analysis)04 Oct 201900:39:48

The Return to Shiganshina Arc of Attack On Titan has concluded, so lets analyse the opening and what it did for the show! OP 5 draws from a variety of elements within the previous openings and also contrasts itself to its predecessor, 'Red Swan'. In this episode I will be taking a closer look at how the opening reflects the mood of the arc from an audio-visual perspective, how it distinguishes itself from the various other OPs and why it excites me for the final parts of the show.

GITM 11: The Curse of Knowledge (Dark Days: The Forge Analysis & Review)27 Sep 201900:27:48

Dark Days: The Forge foreshadows the heavy 'space opera' known as Dark Nights: Metal, a massive arc for Batman and the DC Universe as a whole. With the Tales from the Dark Multiverse series around the corner, I think the time is perfect to dive into the realm of darkness. In today's episode, I will be looking at how The Forge successfully tells part of this saga, how Snyder writes with intention and where the audience left off by the end of this prologue.

GITM 10: The Prologue Arc (Neon Genesis Evangelion Analysis)20 Sep 201900:43:58

I think I can say with confidence that Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995) is one of my favourite shows in the medium to this day. Also, it would be cruel to give the podcast such a name for no reason! Our journey begins in Tokyo-3, in 2015, after the Second Impact. In this episode, I embark on my journey through the Evangelion franchise, looking firstly at what is known as the 'Prologue Arc' (Episode 1-6). Today I'll be looking deeply into Shinji from an emotional perspective, the Hedgehog Dilemma in practice as well as the relationship between Shinji and Eva-01.

GITM 8: I Died... But Then I Lived! (DCeased #1-3 Analysis & Review)06 Sep 201900:25:39

DCeased appears to be the classic zombie survival narrative... which it is! The only stark difference is that it is justified through DC's 'logic'. I finally decided to take this on, after witnessing all the hype prior to its release. In this episode, I will be looking more into the pacing of the issues I just recently read, how this impacts the tone of the story and whether this series is worth continuing.

GITM 7: Four Minus Two (Fantastic Four Vol. 6 #1 Analysis & Review)30 Aug 201900:28:48

If I am honest, the Fantastic Four comics aren't something I chose to delve into very much, but after their recent return post-Secret Wars (2015), I thought it would be appropiate that I give it a try. In this episode, I analyse the contexts that the Fantastic Four find themselves in after the advent of Secret Wars and how the members handle it. I will be taking a dive into how individual characters handle the aftermath, the threat the looms alongside this and most importantly, has the return of the Fantastic Four been worth the wait?

Within this episode, join me on the second part of my journey through Ao No Exorcist, this time through the Kyoto Impure King arc within the second season of the anime 'Ao no Exorcist: Kyoto Fujouou-hen' (2017). I will be taking a look at the stark differences between the first main arcs in comparison to this one, whether this part of the show is oversaturated and if the second season was worth the wait.

GITM 107: Heike Monogatari Episode 9 - A Visual Masterclass | An Analysis19 Nov 2021

I couldn't stop thinking about the anime Heike Monogatari so I decided to make another episode on it - this time, I'm focusing on Episode 9, storyboarded and directed by the amazing Ryouhei Takeshita. This week, I try my best to go into depth on what I think makes this episode a standout one in the series with the goal gaining some more insight into what makes great storytelling in anime. Let's dive into one of the standout anime of the Fall 2021 season for a second time!

GITM 5: Mastery of the Speech (Attack on Titan Season 3 Analysis)22 Aug 201900:26:15

Attack on Titan's (Shingeki no Kyojin) 3rd Season is now done and dusted and before analysing the entirety of The Return to Shiganshina Arc, I want to stop off near the middle. In this episode, I take a deeper dive into Erwin's Speech in Episode 16. This speech changes the way I look at the show completely, as it can be applied to the further arcs and the ones prior.

GITM 4: Boruto at 100 (Boruto Anime Analysis & Review)22 Aug 201900:20:45

Boruto has hit one hundred episodes... which means loads of content to sink my teeth into! In today's episode, join me as I take a deep dive into the major arcs and episodes in the first one hundred episodes, all to answer the question: is the Boruto anime going in a good direction? GITM 3: In the Beginning (DC Universe: Rebirth #1 Analysis & Review)22 Aug 201900:27:05

In the beginning... there was Rebirth! DC Universe: Rebirth #1 is what I like to label 'the book that started it all', in the sense that it allowed new narrative threads to emerge from it, while still embracing what was most important about the DC Universe prior to the New 52. In this episode, join me as I dive into how successfully did the graphic novel set up what came after it, who are the key players in this story and how impactful are they.

GITM 2: Return of the Ghouls (Tokyo Ghoul:re Analysis & Review)22 Aug 201900:25:10

Tokyo Ghoul:re was... an interesting one. With a questionable pace, tone and narrative, I left the show quite confused and unsure on how I felt about it. In today's episode, join me as I do a mini-dissection of what I thought were the 'goods' and 'bads' of the first season of the series. I will be going through what made it so different to its counterparts, why it was truly 'an interesting one' and if the show is worth your time (you can probably guess by now.)

GITM 1: A Demon Emerges (Blue Exorcist Analysis & Review)22 Aug 201900:30:31

Ao No Exorcist is an anime that I have held dear to me for quite a while, so I thought this would be a great way to kick off the show! In this episode, I will be looking at how the anime had to fit into a very crowded market, how it conforms to the 'shounen model' or 'formula' and if it is still worth watching to this very day.

GITM 106: Studying Two Anime OVAs From The Early 90s | An Analysis05 Nov 202100:24:40

It's another episode of the Anime OVA series! On this week's edition, I take a look at two OVAs that I enjoyed recently, namely Kyō Kara Ore Wa!! (From Today I'll) (1992) & Lodoss-tou Senki (Record of Lodoss War) (1990). GITM 105: Heike Monogatari's Approach To Visual Storytelling | An Analysis21 Oct 2021

Heike Monogatari kind of came out of nowhere and already there's so much to unpack from a visual perspective. In this episode, I attempt to break down this anime's approach to visual storytelling by going through the work of the various storyboard aritsts & episodes directors that featured on Episodes 1-4. How does it's approach fit with the epic's themes? How does Naoko Yamada's style as a director influence the anime's aesthetic? All this and more on this week's edition of Get In The Mecha.

GITM 103: When Animation Direction Changes Everything (In Anime) | An Analysis03 Oct 2021

In anime, animation direction is incredibly important - it has the ability to change our entire understanding of an episode and can help convey the ideas that the creatives are attempting to convey. GITM 101: Mecha Anime Was Always About The Characters | An Analysis12 Sep 202100:25:22

Mecha anime pretty much always concerns the characters in it. Although this may sound like a fact to some, other people have a different viewpoint. GITM 98: What Odd Taxi Says About Society | An Analysis07 Aug 202100:31:38

Odd Taxi was a beautiful anime that got me thinking a lot about 'society'. What exactly makes a society? What is it that we all share as people? All these questions have been swimming in my brain for quite a while now, which is why I wanted to take on this anime for this week's podcast. From conceptualising society as a connected whole to the desire to connect with our fellow man, lets discuss this pretty profound topic in Episode 98 of Get In The Mecha.

GITM 97: Dissecting Sonny Boy (So Far) | An Analysis30 Jul 202100:24:44

Sonny Boy is director Shingo Natsume's next big project. In this podcast episode, I take a deep dive into what exactly it 'is' on a political level as well as a visual level. How has Natsume's style & career built up to this point? Are we inherently political beings? Why do I like Sonny Boy so much? All this and more on the 97th episode (and the first video podcast) of Get In The Mecha.

GITM 95: What I Learnt Watching 90s & 80s Anime OVAs | An Analysis09 Jul 202100:38:35

I watched a lot of 80s & 90s OVAs in the most recent lockdown. Do I regret it? Not at all! In this week's episode, I want to share what I really enjoyed about my favourite OVAs from this 'era' and more importantly what I learnt from them too about anime. From the thrilling JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (1993) to the iconic Gunbuster (1988), let's discuss what we can enjoy about these individually but also what we can learn about anime as a whole by giving them more recognition.

Original anime is a big part of what anime 'is' in my opinion - but why exactly is it so important for the art form and also us, the watchers of anime? This week's episode of the podcast is an attempt to get to the bottom of this and really appreciate how fun it can be to watch. GITM 93: The Nadeko Snake Arc (Bakemonogatari Analysis & Review)26 Jun 202100:30:46

The Bakemonogatari re-watch is back! This week let's discuss the fourth arc of the series, The Nadeko Snake Arc. This arc marked a real turning point for me in the series in the way that it showcased a much more uncomfortable side to the series and the big ideas within it. In this episode, I touch on how exactly it creates this uneasy mood from the perspective of audio as well as visual direction, why appearance and reality are such important concepts to not only this arc but the series as a whole & more!

GITM 92: SSSS.Dynazenon - The Churro Scene, Awkwardness & Normality | An Analysis18 Jun 202100:30:46

SSSS.Dynazenon has been a wonderful experience and so I thought it would be worth taking the time to talk about my favourite moments from the series - the awkward & uncomfortable moments. In this week's episode, I talk about the funny, yet quite important 'Churro Scene' and then speak more widely about why these moments are so valuable for humanising the anime and much more.
