Helping the homeless to be more financially resilient

jeudi 29 août 2024Duration 27:50

Money worries go hand-in-hand with housing vulnerability. And with housing vulnerability often comes difficulty in obtaining meaningful employment - thus perpetuating the vicious cycle. In this podcast, FT Adviser editor Simoney Kyriakou talks about the ongoing problems faced by over a million UK households with Maxine Pritchard MBE. Pritchard led the No Fixed Address campaign at HSBC UK, which will be having its five-year anniversary in November this year. Also on this podcast, FT Adviser intern Fardeen Anan provides a short report outlining the issues facing homeless Britons.

Why people feel less safe than in 1994 (and what to do about it)

vendredi 28 juin 2024Duration 30:50

The Doomsday clock, which was created in 1945 by Einstein and Oppenheimer, and is run by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, said the world was at 90 seconds to midnight. This indicates how vulnerable we are globally to man-made threats. This year, as tensions rise, the world goes to the polls, new friendships are forged and old alliances are put under strain, ordinary people can indeed feel closer to midnight.

Are we safe? And if we are not, how can we plan for our futures, or for the next generations? Should we be worried about our portfolios or our supply of shotgun cartridges? When it comes to financial planning, how can advisers help shape clients' response to world events, rather than having them make knee-jerk reactions.

Talking to FT Adviser editor Simoney Kyriakou is Daffyd Rees, an award-winning business journalist by background, a former policy adviser to the UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and is now a senior adviser to leading UK and international companies for SEC Newgate.

What will simplified advice mean for the profession?

vendredi 10 février 2023Duration 33:43

The FCA has set out proposals for simplified advice to make it cheaper and easier for firms to advise consumers about certain mainstream investments within stocks and shares Isas.

But will these proposals work, and which firms are likely to offer simplified advice?

This week FTAdviser news editor Amy Austin is joined by Prakash Chandramohan, strategic policy director at Tisa, Heather Hopkins, managing director of NextWealth, and Chet Velani, managing director of EV, to find out.

They discuss whether simplified advice will simply allow banks to push their Isa products, whether it is worthwhile for advisers to consider offering simplified advice, and what an adviser would have to do to make a success of it.

What will the Edinburgh reforms mean for advisers?

vendredi 3 février 2023Duration 22:25

In December, the chancellor Jeremy Hunt took a trip to Scotland and announced plans to cut or change swathes of financial services regulation as part of the so-called "Edinburgh reforms".

He put forward a list of 30 reforms - including some of the rules created after the 2008 financial crisis such as the senior managers regime and ring fencing - in a move Hunt said would allow the UK to "seize its Brexit freedoms".

So what will these reforms mean for financial advisers? This week FTAdviser deputy editor Damian Fantato is joined by Simon Harrington, head of public affairs at adviser trade body Pimfa, and Ben Blackett-Ord, executive chair of Bovill, to find out.

They discuss how the senior managers regime might be reforms, what Priips ought to be replaced with and what changes to the FCA's remit might mean in practice.

Can value investing be sustainable?

mercredi 25 janvier 2023Duration 25:14

Value investing is an investment philosophy whereby the investor buys assets that they believe to be undervalued by the market and thus have the potential to generate returns.

Over the last 12 months there has been a shift from growth to value: Surging inflation and commodity prices have been hugely beneficial for legacy companies in the oil and gas, and mining sectors as they have been able to take advantage of the global energy crisis and the switching on of demand post-Covid. An environment of rising interest rates is also helping value stocks to appear more valuable, as growth companies tend to have longer-term cash flow horizons; hence their valuations are affected more by rising rates.

So, with the increasing focus on sustainability can one be sustainable and a value investor at the same time?

Joining Ima Jackson-Obot, deputy features editor at FTAdviser, to discuss the topic are Roberta Barr, head of value team ESG - fund manager at Schroders, and Stuart Clark, WealthSelect portfolio manager at Quilter Investors.
