| Episode # 402 Django Unchained with T.A Shelano and Rich from The Middle-aged Bodcast. | 12 Nov 2025 | 00:39:46 | |
T.A Shelano and Rich from The Middle-aged Bodcast return to Flixwatcher to review T.A’s choice Django Unchained.
Django Unchained (2012) is the 8th film from writer and director Quentin Tarantino. Two years before the Civil War, Django (Jamie Foxx), a slave, finds himself accompanying an unorthodox German bounty hunter named Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) on a mission to capture the vicious Brittle brothers. Their mission successful, Schultz frees Django, and together they hunt the South's most-wanted criminals. Their travels take them to the infamous plantation of shady Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), where Django's long-lost wife (Kerry Washington) is still a slave.
Django Unchained earned Christoph Waltz his second Best Supporting Actor and birthed the Leonardo DiCaprio laughing meme. But it isn’t without controversy over its depiction of slavery and graphic violence.
Recommendability scores for Django Unchained were pretty high, but the two hour 45 minute runtime meant lower repeat viewing scores to give an overall rating of 3.27.

The Boy and the Heron (2023) is the 12th Studio Ghibli animation written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The English dub version features the voices of Christian Bale as Shoichi Maki, Robert Pattinson as the Gray Heron, Florence Pugh as Kiriko, and Dave Bautista as the Parakeet King. As he embarks on an epic journey with the heron as his guide, Mahito must uncover the secrets of this world, and the truth about himself.

| Episode # 393 Elvis with Luke Tomlinson and Ash Farkas | 01 Oct 2025 | 00:31:42 | |
Luke Tomlinson (Impropod Podcast) and Ash Farkas return to Flixwatcher to review Luke’s choice Elvis.
Elvis (2022) is an epic Elvis Presley biopic directed by Baz (Moulin Rouge!) Luhrmann. It stars Austin Bulter as Elvis Presley and Tom Hanks as Colonel Tom Parker. Told from the Colonel’s point of view it tells the story of Elvis’ rise to fame and peak celebrity status.
Filmed in true Baz vision Elvis is loud, gaudy and chaotic version of Elvis’ early days and cult icon status. Interesting for a biopic it doesn’t feature any original Elvis recordings. Despite not winning the best actor Oscar, Austin Butler gives an impressive performance as Elvis.
Scores for Elvis were mixed, recommendability depends on your interest and enthusiasm for Elvis and the divisive Baz Luhrmann aesthetic, clocking in at two hours and 39 minutes it didn’t score high for repeat viewing either. Overall Elvis scores 2.75.

Al Horner (Script Apart podcast, Empire Magazine) and Sadia Azmat (stand-up comedian, writer and comedy producer) return to Flixwatcher to review Al’s choice The Hunger Games.
The Hunger Games (2012) is based on the YA novel of the same name by Suzanne Collins. When Katniss volunteers as tribute to save her younger sister she ends up becoming a symbol of the resistance as she defies the rules of the Games.

| Episode # 307 Once with Mark and Elaine from The Honeymoon Period podcast | 12 Jul 2023 | 00:38:48 | |
Mark and Elaine from The Honeymoon Period podcast join Flixwatcher to review Mark’s choice Once.
Once is a 2007 Irish romantic musical drama written and directed by John (Sing Street, Begin Again) Carney. It stars Glen Hansard as ‘guy’ and Markéta Irglová (in her first acting role) as ‘girl’, who ended up as a couple after working together and later performed together as the Swell Season.
Guy is busking on the streets in Dublin when he meets girl, a Czech flower seller who is attracted to his music and asks him about his songs. They go for a coffee and he tells her that he is also a vacuum repair man. The next day she returns with her hoover and reveals she is also a musician. They visit a piano store and she plays the piano for him. Despite trying it on with a desperate offer of “hanky panky” their relationship blossoms and they secure a loan to record his songs professionally.
Shot in a hand held style, on a budget of $150,000, Once was a surprise huge success and took $23.3 million at the box office and won the 2007 Academy Award for Best Original Song for ‘Falling Slowly’.
Recommendabilty for Once was pretty solid, it is impossible to hate on this charming little film that doesn’t go for the Hollywood ending. Remaining scores were very also strong, only slightly lower for repeat viewing, to give an overall rating of 3.96.

| Episode # 306 The Last Castle with Liam Dempsey and Paul Willson from Spocklight: A Star Trek Podcast | 05 Jul 2023 | 00:47:24 | |
Paul Willson and Liam Dempsey from Spocklight: A Star Trek Podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Paul’s choice The Last Castle.
The Last Castle is a 2001 military action film directed by Rod Lurie. It stars Robert Redford as Lieutenant General Eugene Irwin who is sentenced to 10 years at a maximum security military prison for violating orders that resulted in the deaths of eight soldiers. In charge of the prison is James Gandolfini’s Colonel Ed Winter, an admirer of Irwin. Who despite having never seen combat keeps a coveted collection of military artifacts and inflicts punishing behaviour on the prisoners. After a prisoner is killed by a rubber bullet the prisoners start regarding Irwin as their leader and a battle of control between Winter and Irwin intensifies. Mark Ruffalo and Delroy Linda co star.
Although released in 2001 The Last Castle would feel at home in the 1990s action genre, all the effects are practical, not digital and how many 00s films feature Robert Redford shirtless carrying rocks in the midday heat?
The Last Castle is an easy watch, it might be corny and a bit predictable but the star power of Redford and its no nonsense approach makes it quite endearing. The scores for recommendability reflect this and fall into firmly into the three point fives to four marks. Slightly lower scores for repeat viewing due to its two hour plus runtime give an overall rating of 3.79.

| Episode # 305 Werewolves Within with David Llong and Neil Gregory from We Needed Roads podcast | 28 Jun 2023 | 00:36:43 | |
Neil Gregory and David Llong from We Needed Roads podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Neil’s choice Werewolves Within.
Werewolves Within is a 2021 horror comedy mystery film based on a computer game of the same name. Forest ranger Finn (Sam Richardson) Wheeler is assigned to a small town called Beaverfield where there is division in the community over a planned pipeline.
The other residents include postal officer Cecily (Milana Vayntrub) Moore, influencer couple Devon and Joaquim (Harvey Guillén), freaky outdoor guy Emerson Flint and environmentalist Dr. Jane Ellis. A snowstorm confines them to the local lodge where it becomes quickly apparent there is a werewolf on the run and it is targeting the residents.
Falling firmly into more of the comedy genre than horror and silly rather than thrilling, Werewolves Within is a harmless and fairly entertaining 97 minutes. Recommendability scores were pretty decent, a short runtime gives engagement scores a boost to give an overall rating of 3.82.

| Episode # 304 Shirley with Rob and Ellie from KVIKMYNDAPOD | 21 Jun 2023 | 00:38:18 | |
Rob and Ellie from KVIKMYNDAPOD join Flixwatcher to review Rob’s choice Crank.
Crank is a 2006 action film from directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor and starring Jason Statham as hitman Chev Chelios.
While asleep Chelios is injected by Chinese synthetic drug by small-time criminal Ricky Verona, which inhibits the flow of adrenaline, slowing the heart and will eventually kill Chelios.
Chelios learns of this via a DVD recording and calls his Mafia surgeon Doc Miles who advises him to keep his adrenaline up by engaging in risky behaviour. Cue 88 minutes of the Stath driving recklessly, fighting with the police, taking drugs - including epinephrine, and having sex in public with Eve (Amy Smart) his girlfriend.
Crank is a wild, insanely silly, occasionally offensive and innovative action film. Filmed on digital it allowed the directors to adopt a Gonzo approach to filming which adds to its overall feeling of craziness.
Recommendability for Crank were pretty good, repeat viewing and engagement ratings were boosted by the sweet 88 minute runtime to give an overall rating of 3.38.

| Episode # 302 I'm Thinking Of Ending Things with Dr. Nicola Millard and John Loftus | 07 Jun 2023 | 00:44:16 | |
Dr. Nicola Millard and John Loftus (BT Young Scientist STEM Inspirations podcast, 8Radio Ireland) join Flixwatcher to review Nicola’s choice I'm Thinking of Ending Things.
i'm thinking of ending things is the 2020 Charlie Kaufman adaptation of the novel of the same name by Iain Reid. It stars Jessie Buckley as the Young Woman, who could be called Lucy, Louisa, Lucia, and Ames and Jessie Plemmons as her boyfriend Jake. On a wintery car journey to meet Jake’s parents, Mother (Toni Collette) and Father (David Thewlis), the Young Woman is contemplating ending their relationship. After their arrival at Jake’s family home things become increasingly surreal and reality, memory and imagination all merge into one.
It is fair to say the reaction for i’m thinking of ending things was mixed for Flixwatcher and guests, despite being huge fans of other Kaufman films like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Being John Malkovich. Scores for recommendability were quite low and only improved slightly for small screen and to give an overall rating of 2.75.

| Episode # 301 The Fighter with Sadia Azmat and Al Horner from Script Apart | 31 May 2023 | 00:46:45 | |
Sadia Azmat (stand-up comedian, writer and comedy producer) and Al Horner (Script Apart podcast, Empire Magazine) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Sadia’s choice The Fighter.
The Fighter is a 2010 biographical sports film directed by David O. Russell and based on professional boxers (and half-brothers) Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg) and Dicky Eklund (Christian Bale). The film was inspired by the 1995 HBO documentary High on Crack Street: Lost Lives in Lowell, that features the Eklund-Ward family.
It also stars Amy Adams as Micky’s girlfriend Charlene and Melissa Leo as Alice Eklund-Ward (winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress). Bale’s incredible performance as the crack addict Dicky also won him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar, managing to bring humanity and humour to the former boxer struggling with addiction.
While The Fighter doesn’t necessarily follow the sports film formula it still packs a punch as a character focussed drama with Bale giving a standout performance. High recommendability and engagement scores give The Fighter a highly recommended overall score of 4.21.

| Episode # 300 Part I : The Irishman with Martin and Sam from “Song By Song” Podcast | 24 May 2023 | 00:59:09 | |
Happy 300th Flixwatcher! In this special birthday episode Sam Pay and Martin Zaltz Austwick from Song by Song join Flixwatcher to review Helen’s choice The Irishman.
The Irishman is a 2019 Martin Scorsese film, based on the non-fiction book I Heard You Paint Houses by Charles Brandt, it tells the story of Frank "The Irishman" Sheeran a truck driver who becomes a hitman for the mob.
Robert De Niro stars as Frank Sheeran, Joe Pesci stars as Russell Bufalino, the crime boss of the Bufalino mafia and counsel to Jimmy Hoffa, played by Al Pacino. Ray Romano, Bobby Cannavale, Anna Paquin, Stephen Graham and Harvey Keitel also star in supporting roles.
The Irishman is notable for its 209 minute runtime - three hours and 29 minutes of mob violence and International Brotherhood of Teamsters - labour unions in the US.
Recommendability for The Irishman was mixed, despite general consensus that is it a very interesting film, the three hour plus runtime goes against it. Unsurprisingly the repeat viewing scores very quite low and overall The Irishman scores 3.36.

| Episode # 299 Memento with Clare and Daisy from W - Rated podcast | 17 May 2023 | 00:54:18 | |
Daisy and Clare from W - Rated podcast return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Daisy’s choice Memento.
Memento is the 2000 mind bending neo-noir thriller breakthrough film from visionary director Christopher Nolan. It stars Guy Pearce as Leonard Shelby, a man who is unable to store recent memories, he covers himself in tattoos to “remember” facts. He is trying to track down the man who raped and killed his wife with the help of undercover cop Teddy Gammell (Joe Pantoliano). He also becomes involved with Natalie (Carrie-Anne Moss) who may or may not be helping him to track down the killer.
Memento combines a non-linear narrative structure with an unreliable narrator to create a mind bending 113 minutes of film. As the film unravels backwards the viewer is left wondering who are the good guys and who are the bad guys and what is fact and what is fiction.
Everyone apart from Clare, who is a self proclaimed non-Nolan fan, loved Memento on release and it is still as mind blowing as it was when it confused the hell out of us in 2000. Due to its structure it a perfect film for repeat viewing, Memento also scores very highly for engagement to give an overall rating of 3.76.

| Episode # 298 Bird Box with Mel and Bethany from Movement is Life | 10 May 2023 | 00:38:47 | |
Bethany and Mel from Movement is Life, a podcast series from Intelligent Health, return to Flixwatcher to review Bethany’s choice Bird Box.
Bird Box is a 2018 post-apocalyptic thriller, based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Josh Malerman and directed by Susanne (The Night Manager) Bier.
Sandra Bullock stars as Malorie, who we meet at the start of the film blindfolding two young children as they get into a boat and telling them they will die if they remove the blindfolds. Cut to five years earlier and an unknown presence is causing people who have been exposed to it to commit suicide in horrific ways.
A very pregnant Malorie takes refuge in a house with a group of disparate characters including a compassionate passer by Tom (Trevante Rhodes), a grumpy and bitter Douglas (John Malkovich), a unassuming elder woman Cheryl (Jacki Weaver) and another pregnant woman Olympia (Danielle Macdonald). The group try to stay alive but tensions run high as supplies dwindle and unpredictable strangers are let into the house.
Somewhat unfairly called inferior to A Quiet Place - they both came out in 2018 but Bird Box’s novel came out in 2014 - they do have similarities in the set up both are different in tone and post-apocalyptic terror. Bird Box is pretty bleak, making it hard to rate highly on recommendability or repeat viewing, however it still manages to score 3.83 overall.

Liam Dempsey and Paul Willson from Spocklight: A Star Trek Podcast join Flixwatcher to review Liam’s choice Boiling Point.
Boiling Point is a 2021 British drama, directed by Philip Barantini it stars Stephen Graham as Andy, a head chef at an high profile restaurant in London. When we meet Andy he is not having a great day, his restaurant has been downgraded from five to three stars for hygiene, it has been overbooked for the evening and he is having problems in his personal life. Thrown into the mix is also a customer with a nut allergy, a racist diner and tensions in the kitchen all which create a pressure cooker environment.
Shot in one take Boiling Point is a thrilling drama, Graham is excellent as the unfortunate Andy. Watching his situation deteriorate on what could end up being the worst night of his life is both stressful and compelling.
Recommendability and engagement scores for Boiling Point were very high to give a very impressive overall rating of 4.01.

| Episode # 296 Scream with David Llong and Neil Gregory from We Needed Roads podcast | 26 Apr 2023 | 00:43:45 | |
David Llong and Neil Gregory from We Needed Roads podcast join Flixwatcher to review David’s choice Scream.
Scream is the first film in the Scream franchise, released in 1996 it was written by Kevin (Dawsons Creek) Williamson and directed by horror legend Wes (A Nightmare on Elm Street) Craven.
It stars Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, a high school senior who receives threatening phone calls from Ghostface, a masked killer who taunts their victims before brutally stabbing them to death. It also stars as fellow high schoolers Matthew Lillard, Skeet Ulrich, Rose McGowan, Jamie Kennedy and Drew Barrymore, and David Arquette as local sheriff Dewey Riley with Courteney Cox as reporter Gale Weathers.
Scream completely rebooted horror back in 1996, its clever deconstruction of the genre and self reflective knowingness delighted horror kids and casual fans alike. Its longevity was given a boost in 2022 with Scream and Scream VI in 2023 but Scream (1996) still retains its freshness and shock first kill.
Scores for recommendability for Scream were very, very high, consistently strong scores across the other categories give a a very impressive overall rating of 4.29.

| Episode # 295 The Stranger with Tom Salinsky and Rob Miller | 19 Apr 2023 | 00:43:12 | |
Rob Miller (Creative Industry Insight podcast) and Tom Salinsky (Best Pick podcast) return to Flixwatcher to review Rob’s choice The Stranger.
The Stranger is a 2022 psychological crime thriller film, written and directed by Thomas M. Wright it is based on the non-fiction book The Sting: The Undercover Operation That Caught Daniel Morcombe's Killer by Kate Kyriacou. It stars Sean Harris as Henry Teague, the lead police suspect in the disappearance and murder of a young boy. Joel Edgerton is undercover police officer ‘Mark Frame’, who under the guise of being part of the criminal underworld gains the trust of Henry that will hopefully help them secure a confession.
The Stranger is a text book example of a slow burn. It eschews a more traditional storytelling approach taken by undercover cop dramas and focusses on the internal conflict of those who go undercover and the complexities of male bonding.
It’s slightly unconventional approach and intense viewing experience meant it was tricky to score highly on recommendability, which isn’t to say it isn’t very good, just that it isn’t a casual watch. Scores across the remaining categories bring the overall rating to a very respectable 3.58.

| Episode # 294 The Swimmers with Anna Smith and Savina Petkova | 12 Apr 2023 | 00:39:53 | |
Anna Smith (Girls on Film podcast) and Savina Petkova (MUBI Notebook, Little White Lies) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Anna’s choice The Swimmers.
The Swimmers is a 2022 biographical film directed by Sally El Hosaini that tells the incredible true story of Syrian refugee sisters Yusra and Sarah Mardini (played by real life sisters Nathalie and Manal Issa).
The film begins in Damascus with both Yusra and Sarah as aspiring Olympic swimmers, against the backdrop of bombs their normal life is changed forever. With their cousin they leave Syria and take the perilous boat journey across the Aegean Sea in a dingy. When the boat is overloaded Yusra and Sarah swim alongside the boat to prevent it from sinking and saving the other refugees lives. Their journey to Germany continues overland and they eventually arrive Berlin where Yusra meets Sven who helps her to achieve her Olympic dream.
The Swimmers is an unusual mix of incredible real-life story (the boat crossing) and underdog sports story (Yusra’s participation in the 2016 Olympics) which makes for a slightly uneven film. The film also takes a number of creative license decisions that lean towards a more Hollywood approach. Scores for The Swimmers were very high across all categories giving a very impressive overall score of 4.09.

| Episode # 293 Crank with Rob and Ellie from KVIKMYNDAPOD | 05 Apr 2023 | 00:41:28 | |

| Episode # 292 Its Complicated with Liz and Michelle from Two Women Chatting podcast | 29 Mar 2023 | 00:38:13 | |
Michelle and Liz from Two Women Chatting podcast return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Michelle’s choice It's Complicated.
It's Complicated is a 2009 Nancy Meyers rom com. It stars Meryl Streep as Jane, a successful bakery owner and Alec Baldwin as Jake, Jane’s ex-husband who is now in a relationship with a much younger woman. While attending their son Luke’s graduation in New York they end up having drinks in the hotel bar and reminiscing about their time together. One thing leads to another and they end up having sex. Jake is thrilled and continues to pursue Jane when they return home. Jane is less thrilled and finds herself juggling the advances of her ex-husband and a new love interest in the form of Steve Martin’s, sensitive architect Adam.
If you are familiar with Nancy Meyers films then you won’t be surprised to see luxurious interiors, glamorous empowered women relaxing with wine together and in this case of It's Complicated, older men and women having and enjoying sex.
The overall vibes of It's Complicated is frothy and light, some of the behaviour has dated - in particular Jake’s borderline obsessive stalker behaviour - but it is mostly harmless. Scores for recommendability from Michelle and Liz were very high, slightly lower scores for repeat viewing gives an overall score of 4.03.

| Episode # 291 Your Place or Mine with Mel and Bethany from Movement is Life | 22 Mar 2023 | 00:32:15 | |
Mel and Bethany from Movement is Life, a podcast series from Intelligent Health, join Flixwatcher to review Mel’s choice Your Place or Mine.
Your Place or Mine is a 2023 romantic comedy starring Reese Witherspoon as Debbie and Ashton Kutcher as Peter. The film starts in 2003 where Debbie and Peter hook up at a party and have a one night stand. 20 years later they are best of friends even though Debbie is now a single mum living in LA and Peter is a successful business man living in New York. On Peter’s birthday they arrange a house swap so Debbie can attend a course and Peter can look after Debbie’s son, Jack.
Predictably, Debbie and Peter end up together but in a slightly complicated way. Your Place or Mine has shades of The Holiday with the house swap but the dodgy CGI ruins any romantic feelings for New York. There isn’t really a meet-cute and the realisation of their real romance is a bit icky.
It was universally agreed by Flixwatcher and guests that Your Place or Mine is a tragic misfire, zero chemistry between Reese and Ashton and convoluted plot. Recommendability scores for Your Place or Mine were not great and with a run time of nearly two hours, way longer than it needs to be, the engagement wasn’t high either and it scores 2.88 overall.

| Episode # 290 Pinocchio with Tom Salinsky and Rob Miller | 15 Mar 2023 | 00:47:11 | |
Tom Salinsky (Best Pick podcast) and Rob Miller (Creative Industry Insight podcast) join Flixwatcher to review Tom’s choice Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio.
Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio is a 2022 stop-motion animated musical fantasy, directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson. Loosely based on the 1883 Italian novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, this version reimagines the story of Pinocchio, set in fascist Italy between World War I and II. It won the 2023 Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
Geppetto (David Bradley) is a woodcarver who tragically loses his beloved son Carlo, who is killed during a bombing raid. He carves a wooden boy which The Wood Sprite (Tilda Swinton) brings to life and assigns Sebastian J. Cricket (Ewan McGregor) to teach and guide him. Geppetto is initially terrified by Pinocchio and then frustrated by his antics and is forced to send him to school. But on the way he is tricked by Count Volpe (Christoph Waltz) and his monkey Spazzatura (Cate Blanchett) and ends up in their circus.
Not surprising then that Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio shares many visuals and themes found in his other works like The Devils Backbone or Pan’s Labyrinth. The stop-motion is unbelievably detailed and clearly a labour of love. Scores for recommendability were mixed, Pinocchio looks beautiful but some of the songs don’t land and it is on occasion too terrifying and sad to be a children’s film, however it still manages to score a very respectable 3.33 overall.

| Episode # 391 Barbarian with Kat Hughes and Darren Gaskell | 20 Aug 2025 | 00:44:11 | |

Barbarian (2022) is the debut horror film from write and director Zach (Weapons) Cregger. It stars Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård, and Justin Long. A double booked Airbnb rental turns into a nightmare when a secret basement is discovered and the guests are not alone.
Recommendability scores for Barbarian were mixed, given its gore and shock moments any non horror fans will probably find it too much, however, if you love to be shocked then go for it! Despite the low recommendability scores Barbarian still scores a respectable 4.03 overall.

| Episode # 289 Constantine with Mis Trujillo and Sophie Paluch from Auddy | 08 Mar 2023 | 00:42:41 | |
Sophie Paluch and Mis Trujillo from Auddy return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Sophie’s choice Constantine.
Constantine is a 2005 adaptation of DC Comic’s Hellblazer comic book based on the character created by Alan Moore. Directed by Francis (I am Legend) Lawrence it stars Keanu Reeves as John Constantine, an exorcist who can communicate with angels and demons and travel between earth and hell.
It also stars Rachel Weisz as Angela, a LAPD detective investigating the suicide of her twin sister, Tilda Swinton as a half breed Archangel Gabriel, Peter Stormare as Satan/Lucifer, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Father Hennessy, Djimon Hounsou as witch doctor Papa Midnite, Shia LaBeouf as Constant’s driver Chas Kramer and Gavin Rossdale as a half breed demon Balthazar.
Perhaps unfairly reviewed when it came out, Constantine has since found a loyal and enthusiastic fanbase and a sequel was announced to be in the works in late 2022 with Keanu and Francis Lawrence returning.
Recommendability scores for Constantine were pretty generous, some dodgy CGI helped bump up the overall score as they are best seen on a small screen which gives an overall rating of 3.74.

| Episode # 288 Portrait of a Lady on Fire with Reece Beaumont and Leslie Pitt | 01 Mar 2023 | 00:48:30 | |
Reece Beaumont (R&M: A Conversation On Cinema and The Cinematique Podcast) and Leslie Pitt (Fatal Attractions podcast and Hustlers of Culture podcast) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Reece’s choice Portrait of a Lady on Fire.
Portrait of a Lady on Fire is a 2019 French historical drama written and directed by Céline Sciamma. Marianne (Noémie Merlant), is a painter and teacher who has been commissioned to paint a portrait of Héloïse (Adèle Haenel) who is to be married off to a Milanese nobleman. Héloïse has refused to pose for all portraits and was previously living in a convent and is to be married in place of her older sister who committed suicide. Despite the initial frostiness, they develop a short but passionate relationship.
Despite the high regard for Portrait of a Lady on Fire the recommendability scores were tricky as a French lesbian period drama is a difficult film to recommend to everyone. However, Flixwatcher were more generous with their recommendability and scores in the other categories were high to give an overall score of 4.25.

| Episode # 287 Call Me By Your Name with Linton Stephens and from BBCRadio3's and Bertie from BertAndBertie | 22 Feb 2023 | 00:50:34 | |
Linton Stephens (BBC Classical Fix) and Bertie from director duo “Bert and Bertie” return to Fixwatcher to review Linton’s choice Call Me by Your Name.
Call Me by Your Name is a 2017 coming of age romantic drama, directed by Luca Guadagnino with a screenplay by James (Merchant Ivory Productions) Ivory, based on André Aciman’s novel of the same name.
Set in northern Italy in the summer of 1983 it tells the story of the passionate but ultimately doomed romance between 17-year-old Elio (Timothée Chalamet) and a 24-year-old visiting graduate student Oliver (Armie Hammer).
The allure of Call Me By Your Name is undeniable, from the beautiful setting, the 80s nostalgic soundtrack, a moving performance by Chalamet and the all familiar joys and pain of the experience of your first love.
Call Me by Your Name isn’t without some controversy, the age gap between Elio and Oliver has been seen as problematic and in 2021 a series of allegations of abuse by Hammer makes watching in 2023 difficult.
Scores for recommendability for Call Me by Your Name were very high, only dropping a few across repeat and small screen gives a very impressive overall rating of 4.35.

| Episode # 286 The Lure with Lillian Crawford and Laura Venning | 15 Feb 2023 | 00:40:10 | |
Lillian Crawford (AUTISM through CINEMA podcast, Listen to Lillian, Little White Lies) and Laura Venning(BBC Culture, Little White Lies, Empire Magazine) return to Flixwatcher to review Lillian’s choice The Lure.
The Lure (Daughters of Dancing is its Polish title) is a 2015 Polish horror musical, directed by Agnieszka Smoczyńska. It is a very loose reworking of The Little Mermaid, this version is set in 1980s tells the story of two sirens, Golden and Silver, who emerge from the sea and end up performing in a nightclub with the house band Figs n' Dates.
The Lure is quite possibly the weirdest film on Netflix. Difficult to describe, it is a dark fairy tale but it is also a glorious musical with some amazing 80s power ballads.
It also proved to be quite polarising - fishy or sexy - depends how where you fall on mermaids?! If you enjoyed other sex-fish fantasy films and fish you’ll definitely find lots to enjoy here. Despite the weirdness The Lure still scores high on recommendability and engagement to give an overall rating of 4.01.

| Episode # 285 Ammonite with Paul Klein and Jasmine Valentine from Filmhounds Magazine | 08 Feb 2023 | 00:36:08 | |
Jasmine Valentine and Paul Klein from Filmhounds Magazine return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Jasmine’s choice Ammonite.
Ammonite is a 2020 romantic period drama set in 1840s Lyme Regis directed by Francis (God's Own Country) Lee. Loosely inspired by the life of British palaeontologist Mary Anning (Kate Winslet) it focuses on a speculative relationship with her and Charlotte Murchison (Saoirse Ronan), a geologist who is left by her husband to convalescence under Mary’s care.
The setting of Lyme Regis isn’t especially exotic, cold, grey and clammy could be used to describe the chemistry as well the beaches. Jasmine was definitely more enamoured with this chilly romance than Paul and Flixwatcher. Despite this Ammonite still scores generously for recommendability, lower scores for repeat viewing and engagement gives an overall rating of 3.57.

| Episode # 284 Doctor Sleep with Sean Higgins and Lucy Buglass | 01 Feb 2023 | 00:44:02 | |
Lucy Buglass (Tea-V-Time podcast) and Sean Higgins (The Sofa Cinema) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Lucy’s choice Doctor Sleep.
Doctor Sleep is the 2019 supernatural horror, written and directed by Mike Flanagan based on the 2013 Stephen King novel of the same name that is also the sequel to the hugely popular book and film The Shining.
It stars Ewan McGregor as an adult Danny Torrance, who is now an alcoholic, traumatised by the incident at the Overlook Hotel in 1980 and still experiencing his psychic powers (the shining). He ends up working at a hospice and uses his shining to comfort dying patients and earns the nickname Doctor Sleep.
Meanwhile, a group called the True Knots who feed on the ‘steam’ released from killing those who have the shinning, led by Rose the Hat (Rebecca Ferguson), are kidnapping, torturing and killing children. During a killing by the True Knots a child with an extremely strong shine called Abra senses it and she telepathically alerts Danny to it. This also alerts Rose the Hat and it becomes a game of cat and mouse as Danny and Abra try to avoid capture by the True Knots.
Coming in at a hefty two hours 32 minutes you have to be committed and most likely have seen or read The Shining to want to watch Doctor Sleep. It suffered from poor marketing and average reviews on release, the Flixwatcher scores however were more favourable, particularly on recommendability and engagement and Doctor Sleep scores 3.78 overall.

Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa is a 2013 feature length outing for Norwich’s premier DJ Alan Partridge. Starring Steve Coogan as Alan. It features reoccurring characters Lynn Benfield (Felicity Montagu), Michael (Simon Greenall), and "Sidekick" Simon Denton (Tim Key), with some new faces including Pat Farrell (Colm Meaney), Steve Stubbs and Specialist Firearms Officer (Sean Pertwee).
When North Norfolk Digital is brought out by a multinational corporation redundancies are on the table. DJ Alan Partridge hijacks a board meeting with the intention to support long-serving DJ Pat Farrell. When he discovers it is between him or Pat to go he decides to save himself and “JUST SACK PAT”. Pat is sacked and Alan is saved, at a company party a disgruntled Pat takes the radio station hostage at gun point and Alan is sent in to negotiate.
Spin off films from hit comedy TV programmes can vary in quality from the good (Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan) to the very, very bad (Brüno) with a struggle with sustaining a longer runtime and story based on sketch style comedy. Thankfully, Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa is a real treat for fans of all things Alan.
Recommendability for Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa was high, but based on being a fan or at least familiar with Alan. Small screen and engagement scores were also high to give a very impressive overall rating of 4.41.

| Episode # 282 The Lost Daughter with Hana Walker Brown and Jen Offord | 18 Jan 2023 | 00:46:07 | |
Jen Offord (Standard Issue Podcast, author The Year of the Robin) and Hana Walker Brown (Broccoli Productions, author A Delicate Game) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Jen’s choice The Lost Daughter.
The Lost Daughter is a 2021 drama, based on the Elena Ferrante novel of the same name and directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal (her directorial debut). It stars Olivia Coleman as Leda, a university professor and translator on holiday in Greece. One day on the beach she meets Nina (Dakota Johnson) a young mother, when Nina’s three-year-old daughter goes missing for a short period Nina is faced with her own memories and feelings of being a mother, told in flashbacks with Jessie Buckley playing the young Leda. Paul Mescal, Peter Sarsgaard and Ed Harris also co-star.
Feelings about The Lost Daughter were mixed but there is no doubt about the powerhouse of acting on show - particularly from Coleman and Buckley playing Leda at different times of her life. The Lost Daughter is a bold choice by Gyllenhaal and Flixwatcher and guests look forward to seeing what she directs next.
The Lost Daughter scored fairly highly on recommendability but with a runtime of two hours the repeat viewing scores were lower to give an overall rating of 3.39.

| Episode # 281 Hilda the Mountain King with Danni Haughan and DaveSmith from Wardour Studios | 11 Jan 2023 | 00:48:55 | |
David Smith and Danni Haughan from Small Wardour return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Dave’s choice Hilda and the Mountain King.
Hilda and the Mountain King is based on the graphic novels by Luke Pearson, this film picks up from the season two finale of the animated series Hilda. Hilda is now a troll and stranded in troll county. Meanwhile in Trolberg, a curfew is announced due to increased troll activity. Later the students at the local school are shown a safety video about trolls but Hilda’s friends Frida and David question the inaccurate information in the film. An adventure ensues to rescue Hilda and turn her back into a human.
Fear of the other and tolerance of other cultures are strong themes in Hilda and the Mountain King. It also features strong female characters with agency and opinions - rather than waiting for a prince or on a constant quest for romance.
Highly recommended for children (and former children), however, being familiar with the graphic novels or the animated series would be beneficial as not only an introduction to the characters but also to know the events that occurred before. Scores for Hilda and the Mountain King were high for repeat viewing from David and Danni (with support from Danni’s children!) and help to give a very impressive overall rating of 4.14.

| Episode # 280 Falling For Christmas with Clare and Daisy from W - Rated podcast | 21 Dec 2022 | 00:53:40 | |
Clare and Daisy from W - Rated podcast join Flixwatcher remotely to review Clare’s choice Falling For Christmas.
Falling for Christmas is a 2022 romcom starring Lindsay Lohan in her first lead role in more than a decade. She plays spoiled heiress Sierra/Sarah, on a date with her influencer boyfriend Tad, falls off a mountain and is knocked unconscious. She is discovered by bland but caring recently widowed Jake (Chord Overstreet) who owns a failing ski resort. Unable to remember who she is, Sierra now Sarah, helps out at the ski lodge while trying to discover who she really is.
Clare and Daisy are no stranger to the worlds worst films as their podcast delves deep into IMDBs bottom 100 list. As a film, Falling for Christmas is not great, however, as (Netflix) Hallmark films go, it ticks all the boxes of that genre. Drawing parallels with Overboard it isn’t especially original but it is Christmassy and light predicable fun.
Unsurprisingly recommendability for Falling for Christmas was not high, scores for repeat viewing was lower but incredibly it still managed to score 3.15 overall. Merry Christmas from Flixwatcher! Thank you for listening this year, see you in 2023!

| Episode # 390 The King with Harley Mumford and Tom Davies | 13 Aug 2025 | 00:38:29 | |
Harley Mumford (Fandamentals podcast) and Tom Davies (The Proper Mental Podcast) return to Flixwatcher to review Harley’s choice The King.
The King (2019) is a historical drama based on William Shakespeare’s Henriad. Directed by David (War Machine) Michôd it’s star studded cast includes Timothée Chalamet as Henry V, Joel Edgerton as John Falstaff, Sean Harris as Chief Justice Sir William Gascoigne, Tom Glynn-Carney as Sir Harry "Hotspur" Percy, Lily-Rose Depp as Catherine, Thomasin McKenzie as Phillippa, Queen of Denmark, Robert Pattinson as Louis, Duke of Guyenne and Ben Mendelsohn as King Henry IV.
This adaptation of Shakespeare's Henriad focuses on the rise Henry V after his father’s death while he navigates the politics involved and discovers while the loyalties lie. The King is much more a character study that action film, there is action but it explores in the emotional side as well.
Recommendability for The King was mixed, its length and subject proved tricky to be universally recommended and it scores 2.85 overall.

| Episode # 279 True Grit Amelie Thomas and Matthew Turner from Fatal Attractions podcast | 14 Dec 2022 | 00:37:37 | |
Matthew Turner and Amelie Thomas from Fatal Attractions podcast return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Matthew’s choice True Grit.
True Grit is the 2010 Coen Brothers Western adapted from the the 1968 novel of the same name. It stars Jeff Bridges as Deputy U.S. Marshal Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn and Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross and co stars Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, and Barry Pepper. The previous film adaptation starred John Wayne, Kim Darby and Glen Campbell.
Mattie Ross, a 14-year-old farm girl, collects her father’s body after he was shot while on a trip to buy horses by Tom (Brolin) Chaney. She hires a reluctant Rooster Cogburn to track Chaney down. He agrees to take her with him but departs without her. Furious Mattie pursues him riding alone and catches up with Rooster to find him riding with Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Damon). Rooster is left with no choice but to carry on with Mattie in tow.
It earned a whopping ten Oscar nominations and failed to win a single one. Despite this, mainly due to Roger Deakins cinematography, True Grit remains a favourite among fans of the Coens and Westerns.
True Grit had a mixed response for recommendability due to its western genre, you either like them or you don’t! Slightly higher scores for the other categories gives an overall rating of 3.75
The Coen Brothers are currently the top featured Flixwatcher directors (along with Tarantino) and True Grit ranks ahead The Ballad of Buster Scruggs but below No Country for Old Men. If you're a fan of the Coens be sure to check out our other episodes!

| Episode # 278 The DIg with Liz and Michelle from Two Women Chatting podcast | 07 Dec 2022 | 00:43:39 | |
Liz and Michelle from Two Women Chatting podcast join Flixwatcher remotely to review Liz’s choice The Dig.
The Dig is a 2021 British drama based on the novel of the same name that is a reimagining of the events around the 1939 excavation of Sutton Hoo in Suffolk. Sutton Hoo was a site of Anglo-Saxon ship containing artefacts was buried. The site was first excavated by Basil (Ralph Fiennes) Brown under the watch of the landowner Edith (Carey Mulligan) Pretty. When the importance of the dig is discovered national experts - Peggy (Lily James) and Stuart (Ben Chaplin) Pigott - take over to recover the artefacts.
The Dig is fairly true to the events that happened except for an invented romance between Peggy and Rory (who in real life were photographers Mercie Lack and Barbara Wagstaff and O. G. S. Crawford) Lomax and her supposed inexperience in the field. The casting of Mulligan, in her 30s, caused some controversy as Pretty was in her mid 50s at the time.
Liz brought her insight from her experience archaeology and confirms it is not sexy and is as presented on screen. Due to The Dig’s niche subject, scores for recommendabilty were mixed and its two hour runtime also went against it on repeat viewing. However, it still manages to score a respectable 3.44 overall.

| Episode # 277 Killing of a Sacred Deer with Mis Trujillo and Sophie Paluch from Auddy | 30 Nov 2022 | 00:45:36 | |
Mis Trujillo and Sophie Paluch from Auddy join Flixwatcher remotely to review Mis’ choice The Killing of A Sacred Deer.
The Killing of A Sacred Deer is a 2017 psychological horror/thriller film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos with a screenplay inspired by the Greek tragedy Iphigenia in Aulis.
Colin Farrell plays a heart surgeon Steven Murphy who strikes up an unusual relationship with Barry Keoghan’s Martin - the son of a man who died while Steven was operating on him. Steven invites Martin to meet his wife Anna (Nicole Kidman), his daughter Kim (Raffey Cassidy) and his son Bob (Sunny Suljic) and shortly after Bob becomes paralysed with no know cause. Martin gives Steven an ultimatum that to “balance things” for the death of his father, Steven must kill either Anna, Bob or Kim or they will all die.
It is fair to say Yorgos Lanthimos films are an acquired taste and not for everyone - The Killing of A Sacred Deer is perhaps his most divisive so far. Recommendability scores for The Killing of A Sacred Deer were mixed as it swings wildly between black comedy and deeply unsettling. Slightly higher engagement scores manage to give it an overall rating 3.46. Fan of Yorgos Lanthimos? Be sure to check out our episode on The Lobster!

| Episode # 276 Bladerunner 2049 with Leslie Pitt and from Fatal Attractions and Reece Beaumont | 23 Nov 2022 | 00:47:23 | |
Leslie Pitt (Fatal Attractions podcast and Hustlers of Culture podcast) and Reece Beaumont (Reos Positive POV) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Leslie’s choice Blade Runner 2049.
Blade Runner 2049 in a 2017 sequel to Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner (1982), directed by Denis Villeneuve it stars Ryan Gosling as K/Joe as Nexus-9 replicant working for the LAPD as a “blade runner” who retires (kills) rogue replicants. While on a job he discovers a box containing remains of a replicant that had a caesarean, proving that replicants can reproduce. His superior Lt. Joshi (Robin Wright) fears this knowledge could start a war between humans and replicants and orders K to cover the truth.
The supporting cast also includes Harrison Ford (reprising his role as Deckard), Ana de Armas in her breakout role, Mackenzie Davis, Dave Bautista and David Dastmalchian. Blade Runner 2049 also earned Sir Roger Deakins his very much deserved first Oscar for Best Cinematography on his 14th nomination.
Scores for Blade Runner 2049 were mixed, there were a few caveats to the scores for recommendability and due to the incredible cinematography low scores for small screen. However, it still manages to score a respectable 3.62 overall.

| Episode # 275 Lou with Linton Stephens and from BBCRadio3's and Bertie from BertAndBertie | 16 Nov 2022 | 00:41:46 | |
Bertie from director duo “Bert and Bertie” and Linton Stephens (BBC Classical Fix) join Fixwatcher to review Bertie’s choice Lou.
Lou is a 2022 action thriller directed by Anna Foerster and it stars Allison Janney as Lou, a loner living with her dog on Orcas Island with a secret past that comes back to haunt her when a local girl is abducted.
Lou arrives at the same time as Michelle Yeah and Viola Davis are championing physical and powerful performances for women over the age of 50 and Janney impresses, particularly with her combat skills.
However impressive Janney is, Lou unfortunately feels a bit like a budget Taken. Scores for recommendability for Lou were generous but lower for repeat viewing and engagement to give an overall score of 3.37.

| Episode # 274 The Others with Laura Venning and Lillian Crawford | 09 Nov 2022 | 00:36:00 | |
Laura (BBC Culture, Little White Lies, Empire Magazine) Venning and Lillian (AUTISM through CINEMA podcast, Little White Lies) Crawford join Flixwatcher to review Laura’s choice The Others.
The Others is a 2001 gothic horror starring Nicole Kidman and written and directed by Alejandro (Open Your Eyes) Amenábar.
Kidman is Grace who lives in a remote house in Jersey in the aftermath of World War II with her two young children who suffer from an unspecified photosensitive condition. She hires three new house staff and strange things start happening at the house which leads Grace to believe there are “others” in the house with them.
The Others is a beautifully designed gothic horror that manages to create and sustain a feeling of something not being quite right but not revealing its twist too early.
Scores for recommendability for The Others were high but due to the twist ending repeat viewing was much lower and gives an overall rating of 3.59.

| Episode # 273 The Craft with Paul Klein and Jasmine Valentine from Filmhounds Magazine | 02 Nov 2022 | 00:46:10 | |
Paul Klein and Jasmine Valentine from Filmhounds Magazine join Flixwatcher to review Paul’s choice The Craft.
The Craft is a 1996 teenage supernatural horror film directed by Andrew Fleming. It stars Robin Tunney as Sarah, a newcomer to the high school with unusual powers. She befriends a group of outcasts who practice witchcraft led by trailer-trash Nancy (Fairuza Balk), burns victim Bonnie (Neve Campbell) and Rochelle (Rachel True) who is racially abused by Laura (Christine Taylor).
Nancy invites Sarah to join their coven and she becomes “the fourth” to complete the wind-water-earth-fire circle and give them supernatural powers. Popular school jock Chris spreads false rumours about Sarah after their date and this leads to the coven casting individual powerful spells that each have negative consequences.
Scores for recommendability for The Craft reflected the mixed tone of the film - swinging wildly from teen drama to straight up horror. Lower scores for repeat viewing and engagement give an overall rating of 3.43.

| Episode # 272 Halloween with Sean Higgins and Lucy Buglass | 26 Oct 2022 | 00:45:01 | |
Sean Higgins (The Sofa Cinema) and Lucy Buglass (Tea-V-Time podcast) join Flixwatcher remotely for a spooky special to review Sean’s choice Halloween.
Halloween is the 1978 John Carpenter slasher classic starring Jamie Lee Curtis (in her film debut) as Laurie Strode who is terrorised on Halloween by mental patient on the loose Michael Myers.
That is basically the plot! It has inexplicably spawned 12 sequels of extremely mixed quality - Carpenter very wisely had zero involvement in the sequels - but it is widely agreed that Halloween (1978) is the best. Laurie has entered into film history as an original ‘final girl’ and the Michael Myers mask has entered popular culture multiple times (see Baby Driver).
Halloween is probably unlikely to shock and scare 2022 viewers like it did in 1978 but that doesn’t stop it being highly endearing and winning over even non-horror fan Kobi. Scores for Halloween were very high, especially for recommendability, slightly lower engagement give it an overall rating of 3.95.

| Episode # 271 Zero Dark Thirty with Helen and Bill from When One Thing Leads To Another | 19 Oct 2022 | 00:39:40 | |
Bill and Helen from When One Thing Leads to Another podcast return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Bill’s choice Zero Dark Thirty.
Zero Dark Thirty is a 2012 dramatisation of the international manhunt for Osama bin Laden post 9/11. It’s impressive cast includes Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, Jennifer Ehle, Mark Strong, Kyle Chandler, James Gandolfini, Harold Perrineau, Mark Duplass, Joel Edgerton, Chris Pratt, Jeremy Strong and John Barrowman. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow and written by The Hurt Locker collaborator Mark Boal it earned widespread critical acclaim and was a box office success.
In the hunt for bin Laden, CIA analyst Maya (Chastain) Harris visits the interrogation (torture) of detainees with suspected links to al-Qaeda with CIA officer Dan (Clarke) Fuller. During this time she is given the name Abu Ahmed, which at first appears to be a dead end but a chance conversation years later reveals that Abu Ahmed may be alive and his brother is dead. With this lead confirmed surveillance points to a compound where bin Laden is assumed to be hiding.
Ten years after its release Zero Dark Thirty still remains a tense fictionalised version of real events and this was reflected in the recommendability scores. With a runtime of over two and half hours scores for repeat viewing were much lower and gives Zero Dark Thirty an overall score of 3.77

| Episode # 270 Jackie Brown with Russell Bailey and Will Which | 12 Oct 2022 | 00:41:16 | |
Russell Bailey (Not Just For Kids Podcast) and Will Which (Caged In: Coppola Connections) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Russell’s choice Jackie Brown.
Jackie Brown is the 1997 Quentin Tarantino film based on the novel Rum Punch by Elmore Leonard. It stars Pam Grier as Jackie Brown, Samuel L. Jackson as Ordell, Robbie Robert Forster as Max Cherry, Bridget Fonda as Melanie Ralston, Michael Keaton as ATF Agent Ray Nicolette, Robert De Niro as Louis Gara and Chris Tucker as Beaumont Livingston.
Air hostess Jackie Brown is busted carrying cash and drugs from Mexico into the US for gun enthusiast and aspiring crime boss Ordell. To avoid jail she agrees to help Agent Ray Nicolette in a sting to get Ordell. At the same time she negotiates a plan with Ordell for him to keep the money - unknown to either Jackie plans to keep the money for herself with the help of smitten bail bondsman Max Cherry.
Unbelievably Jackie Brown received a lukewarm response from critics and film fans who were expecting Pulp Fiction part two. Time has however shown that it is top tier Tarantino and it has grown in popularity, mainly because of the incredible performance by Pam Grier.
Scores for Jackie Brown were high for recommendability but a little lower for repeat viewing - mainly due to its 2 hour 40 min run time - and engagement gives an overall rating of 4.03. This makes Jackie Brown the current leader on the Flixwatcher scoreboard for Tarantino films.

Alistair Ryder (Zavvi ) and Stephen Palmer (Asian Cinema Film Club podcast) join Flixwatcher to review Alistair’s choice The Killer.
The Killer (2023) is thriller directed by David (Fight Club) Fincher, based on the French graphic novel series by Alexis "Matz" Nolent and illustrated by Luc Jacamon, with a screenplay by Andrew (Seven) Kevin Walker. It stars Michael Fassbender as a professional hitman who seeks revenge after a hit goes wrong and his girlfriend is targeted. The Killer features many Fincher trademarks including his distinctive visual style, Trent Ross and Atticus Finch score, pop soundtrack and black comedy.
Recommendability and engagement scores for The Killer were solid, even though the film falls under Fincher’s Netflix deal it still looks and feels cinematic, and it scores 3.88 overall.

| Episode # 269 See No Evil, Hear No Evil with Will Collins and Kevin Lehane from The Best Bits Podcast | 05 Oct 2022 | 00:41:11 | |
Kevin Lehane and Will Collins from The Best Bits Podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Kevin’s choice See No Evil, Hear No Evil.
See No Evil, Hear No Evil is a 1989 Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder comedy directed by Arthur (Love Story) Hiller. Pryor plays Wallace "Wally" Karew, a blind man and Wilder plays David "Dave" Lyons, a deaf man who end up on the run from the police after “witnessing” a murder. Kevin Spacey also stars in one of his earlier roles.
It received a mixed response on its release - mostly negative reviews but was a relative box office success and would be Pryor and Wilder’s last financially successful film together.
While See No Evil, Hear No Evil might offer a nostalgia watch for anyone who watched it as a child in the 1980s it will probably offer little - and quite possibly offend anyone watching with 2022 eyes.
Scores for See No Evil, Hear No Evil were mixed from Flixwatcher and guests (there may have also been some tactical scoring going on!) but it still manages an overall rating of 3.55.

| Episode # 268 Ponyo with Danni Haughan and DaveSmith from Wardour Studios | 28 Sep 2022 | 00:36:26 | |
Danni Haughan and David Smith from Small Wardour join Flixwatcher remotely to review Danni’s choice Ponyo.
Ponyo is a 2008 Studio Ghibli animation written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki (Miyazaki’s eighth film for Ghibli). In this film a magical fish called Ponyo escapes from her overprotective father Fujimoto and meets five-year-old Sōsuke. After tasting human blood she gains the ability to change into human form and eats ham. Believing her to have been kidnapped Fujimoto imprisons her. With the help of her fish sisters Ponyo escapes and inadvertently spills magic into the ocean that causes a huge tsunami to flood the town.
Ponyo, as you’d expect from a Studio Ghibli film, is a mixture of everyday life and the utterly bonkers - all captured in stunning animated detail. We recommend you watch it with Japanese audio and subtitles first and second time with the English dub with Liam Neeson!
Ponyo scored highly across all Flixwatcher categories to give an impressive overall rating of 4.11. Currently placing it second in the Flixwatcher rankings of Studio Ghibli films reviewed so far!

| Episode # 267 The Father with Hana Walker Brown and Jen Offord | 21 Sep 2022 | 00:49:28 | |
Hana Walker Brown (Broccoli Productions, author A Delicate Game) and Jen Offord (Standard Issue Podcast, author The Year of the Robin) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Hana's choice The Father.
The Father is a 2020 drama directed by Florian Zeller and is based on the stage play of the same name. It stars Anthony Hopkins, in an Oscar-winning performance, as the father, Anthony, Olivia Coleman as his daughter Anne, Mark Gatiss, Imogen Poots, Rufus Sewell, and Olivia Williams Co star.
Anthony is in his 80s and has dementia, his daughter Anne is frustrated as he has rejected several carers and it is putting a strain on her relationship with her partner. Through their interactions we move between Anthony's flat and Anne's flat. We meet Laura, a carer, who bears a likeness to his other daughter Lucy or is she his memory of Lucy? There are two different men in the flat, sometimes Paul and sometimes James.
The Father is a powerful and disorientating experience of how it feels to slowly lose your memory to dementia. Characters and rooms shift and change and the viewer questions what is real and what is imagined.
The Father is a difficult watch but it is also an incredible film with stellar performances. Unsurprisingly the scores for recommendability were very high. Slightly lower scores for repeat viewing give The Father an overall rating of 3.96.
