291: Job Therapy - Identifying the Source Of Your Career Dissatisfaction

Episode 291

jeudi 19 septembre 2024Duration 44:18

If you could never work in your chosen career again, would you be relieved, or would you be disappointed? Dr. Tessa West is a Professor of Psychology at New York University, a leading expert on the science of social relationships, and a researcher focusing on how to improve communication between employees, bosses, and hiring professionals. She regularly contributes to the The Wall Street Journal among other noted publications. She is the author of two books, Jerks at Work which she talked about on her first visit to Finding Brave , and most recently, Job Therapy: Finding Work That Works for You which focuses on finding out and understanding the psychological source of your unhappiness at work and then taking a series of carefully orchestrated steps to find a career with long-term staying power.

During this rich conversation, Tessa shares key insights from Job Therapy. To kick off our discussion, we explore what it might look like to reframe your career by thinking of it as you would a romantic relationship or partnership. She shares how feeling that she was being a jerk to her coworkers sparked the concept of her first book before unpacking the five forms of job dissatisfaction and their true roots. We discuss the importance of understanding that we only see the surface of the lives of others (and make many erroneous judgments about what other people have that we don't) and why identifying your own core transferrable skills is a superpower. In closing, she shares a powerful tip on truly getting to know yourself in meaningful and productive ways.

Tessa's grounded perspective in research paired with acute self-awareness makes for deeply insightful listening and learning.

Key Highlights From This Episode:

  • Reframing your career as a relationship to understand the complexity and journey of it. [05:34]
  • How being a jerk to her coworkers sparked the concept for her book, Jerks at Work. [11:01]
  • Three of the five most common forms of dissatisfaction and their source. [13:54]
  • How a theory behind a happy marriage mirrors what it might look like to have a good career. [24:27]
  • The importance of realizing that we are not aware of the day-to-day of other people's lives. [27:40]
  • Why a Crisis of Identity is the most common category that people fall into. [29:41]
  • Identifying the core skills that can be transferred from one career to another. [33:30]
  • What is really necessary to know yourself: try to be a scientific observer of your own experiences. [41:46]

191: Listener Favorite Summer Pick: Ensuring Your Best Days Are Ahead, Not Behind You, with Antonio Neves

Episode 191

jeudi 2 septembre 2021Duration 38:41

Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts!

This August, I'm delighted to bring you several of our top "listener favorites" episodes from the past year of shows. Today's episode originally aired on April 23rd, 2020. Hope you enjoy them!

"I do want us to think bigger, and the whole mindset of "the best thing" is living each day to the max because we woke up and because we are here. Indeed, if I am here today, I truly do believe the best thing is ahead of me. - Antonio Neves

Today, I'm sharing an exploration with you of my own belief, and my guest's as well, that the best thing to ever happen to you continues to be ahead of you, not behind you. Back in 2016, my Finding Brave guest reached a point where even though the internet, social media, and his resume said he was "successful," he was in a deep funk in his personal and business life. In this episode, he reveals how he set out to course correct and to ensure that his best days were always going to be ahead and not behind him.

Antonio Neves teaches powerful principles and actionable strategies to ensure that how you live your life every day, and the mindsets and behaviors you embrace, will leverage all that you've experienced and learned, and set you up to continue to thrive at your highest level.

Antonio is the author of four books including, Stop Living On Autopilot: Take Responsibility for Your Life and Rediscover a Bolder, Happier You. On his podcast The Best Thing, Antonio talks with leaders about the "best thing" to happen to them that would never appear on a resume. Antonio's speaking audiences over the years have included: Google, Amazon, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Visa, Stanford University and scores more. For over 10 years, Antonio worked as a correspondent in New York City with top television networks including NBC, PBS and BET Networks. Antonio has been featured on the TODAY Show and his advice and opinions regularly appear in Inc.com, Thrive Global, TheMuse.com, and more.

As Antonio shares, you do indeed have a say in your life, but you must take full responsibility for where you are today. If you focus on being of service to others, and don't overly attach to specific outcomes and remember to reach out and not do it alone, you can accomplish anything of significance that you put your mind to.

190: Listener Favorite Summer Pick: Free Audio Chapter 6 of The Most Powerful You: Losing Sight of Your Thrilling Dream for Your Life

Episode 190

jeudi 26 août 2021Duration 53:44

Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts!

This August, I'm delighted to bring you several of our top "listener favorites" episodes from the past year of shows.

Today's solo episode originally aired on July 23rd, 2020. Hope you enjoy them! "For those who've sold their soul for money, their professional lives can be extremely painful, crushing and in fact, unsustainable because they've unconsciously chosen to walk away from the exciting dreams for their lives that would bring fulfillment, internal reward and a sense of purpose." - Kathy Caprino

In this episode of Finding Brave I share the audio version of Chapter 6 of my latest book, The Most Powerful You: 7 Bravery-Boosting Paths to Career Bliss. This chapter is very close to my heart, as it explores the damaging power gap of losing sight of your thrilling dream for your life, which I've lived through, and it can be a crushing experience. This is something that has not only impacted me, but countless others in the pursuit of "success" and "safety" in their careers and professional lives.

Things will happen to each of us that derail our dreams, and often you'll take a direction that you think is right for you, but it ends up being the wrong path. It's a universal experience -- that what we once believed was possible and desirable can change, and we have to change as a result. If you don't want to wake up unhappy years from now, you have to accept this fact and realize that you alone are responsible for how you respond to the life that's before you, and to the challenges and hardships that you've faced.

You alone have the power to shape your future, and now is the time to choose your own way in pursuit of the life you want to live and the mark you want to make in the world.

189: Listener Favorite Summer Pick: 5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Leaving Corporate and Launching My Business

Episode 189

jeudi 19 août 2021Duration 39:56

Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts!

This August, I'm delighted to bring you several of our top "listener favorites" episodes from the past year of shows. Today's solo episode originally aired on June 27th, 2019. Hope you enjoy them!

"I know it's scary to make the move from corporate life into your own business and you feel like you don't know enough, but I'm going to ask you to really listen to yourself. You know a heck of a lot more than you think you do." - Kathy Caprino

Are you ready to finally leave your corporate career and start your own venture? Or perhaps you have launched your business already and are facing important new challenges that you wonder if you're adequately prepared for.

In this episode, I discuss why so many small businesses fail and share my raw, real-life experiences around what I learned in transitioning from my 18-year corporate career to running my own coaching and consulting business, Kathy Caprino, LLC. You'll hear about the biggest gaps in knowledge and experience that kept me from having a smoother transition, and I offer some essential information that I wish I had understood before making the leap.

The biggest surprise for me in running a business was that even though I had been in marketing for years and had risen to the level of Vice President overseeing numerous large-scale programs, initiatives and staff in my corporate life, I still was very far away from being fully prepared for entrepreneurial life, and for serving as a true leader in my own venture.

The key knowledge gaps I explore here include: 1) Unconscious tendencies and blocks around successfully managing and relating to money, 2) Not selecting the best partners and why we often continually fail at it, 3) Why we need to step up to being a true leader and making critical decisions rather than staying stuck as the "doer" or "manager," 4) Why pivoting more quickly and flexibly is essential, and 5) Listening to your own instincts and intuition and making moves that align with your truest core values and visions rather than deferring to "gurus" who don't necessarily know their stuff or have your best interests at heart.

188: Listener Favorite Summer Pick: Top 5 Regrets of the Dying, with Bronnie Ware

Episode 188

jeudi 12 août 2021Duration 43:49

Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts!

This August, I'm delighted to bring you several of our top "listener favorites" episodes from the past year of shows. Today's episode features Bronnie Ware, and it originally aired on January 9th, 2020. Hope you enjoy them!

"If we dare to create some space to honor the things that light us up, even if they're not at all linked with our professional life, they will lift our happiness, our confidence, our presence and our joy. To a point that we bring more efficiency to our work, we also will bring more clarity to our life." - Bronnie Ware

The time we have is sacred, but it's common for us to get caught up in our daily activities and forget this fact. Today's Finding Brave guest has a message that will resonate with all those who are at a point in life where they know that change is needed, as she explores how life really is on our side and why in the end, courage indeed will be rewarded for those who are brave.

Bronnie Ware is best known as the author of the international bestselling memoir The Top Five Regrets of the Dying, read by over a million people in 32 languages and with a movie in the pipeline. Bronnie is also an inspirational speaker. She lives in northern New South Wales, Australia, and is a passionate advocate for simplicity and leaving space to breathe.

This conversation with Bronnie is about much more than the top regrets that people have at the end of their lives. 186: How to Have Those Difficult But Crucial Conversations With Friends and Colleagues, with Joseph Grenny

Episode 186

jeudi 29 juillet 2021Duration 37:04

Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts!

"The goal of the conversation is not to convince. It's not to compel, and it's not to control. It's not to try to get the other person to think something different. As soon as we believe somebody is trying to control us in that kind of way, we resist. So the very effort to convince, it makes you less convincing." - Joseph Grenny

Contrary to how many people feel in our world today, it is possible to tell the truth and avoid alienating a friend or colleague or engendering terrible and painful conflict. With so much distrust among family, friends, colleagues and our leaders, it's vital to not to take the two standard approaches - being silent or violent -- on core issues but instead learn the essential skills behind expressing yourself candidly yet cordially. Today's Finding Brave expert guest reveals how it's not having different opinions that's the problem in our conflicts, rather it's how and why we express those opinions, and the approach we take before even entering the conversation.

Joseph Grenny is a four-time New York Times bestselling author, dynamic keynote speaker, and leading social scientist for business performance. Joseph has spoken at some of the world's premier leadership conferences. His books have been translated into 28 languages, are available in 36 countries, and have generated results for 300 of the Fortune 500.

I had the honor of interviewing Joseph and David Maxfield in my Forbes blog in 2015 in a piece on Gender Bias Is Real: Women's Perceived Competency Drops Significantly When Judged as Being Forceful, on their groundbreaking research on gender bias, and I've often quoted the information that their research uncovered that proved gender bias is not imagined, it's real - and their research showed on how women's perceived competency and perceived worth drops exponentially more than men's when they are are perceived as forceful or assertive. I've featured their work in my TEDx talk Time to Brave Up, and in my new book The Most Powerful You and my Most Powerful You Course which is why I'm so excited to speak with Joseph today and bring you his expert insights and perspectives on navigating crucial conversations.

Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts!

"In my work as an entrepreneur, and later an academic, [I have seen that] the most purpose-driven, successful and inspiring people seem to have something in common, which is that they intuitively cultivate serendipity. They somehow see something in the unexpected and then turn that into positive outcomes." - Christian Busch

Have you ever seen someone who has achieved success and wondered how that person has done it, or what his or her "secret" was? Today's Finding Brave guest shares his personal story and findings in studying the topics of luck and serendipity, along with the ways that each of us can start cultivating serendipity in our own lives and organizations.

Dr. Christian Busch directs the CGA Global Economy Program at New York University, and also teaches at the London School of Economics. Previously, he co-directed the LSE's Innovation Lab and co-founded the Sandbox Network as well as Leaders on Purpose. He is a member of the World Economic Forum's (WEF) Expert Forum, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and among Diplomatic Courier's "Top 99 Influencers" as well as the Thinkers50 Radar list of 30 thinkers "most likely to shape the future." Christian's bestselling book, The Serendipity Mindset , has been highlighted as a "wise, exciting, and life-changing book" (Arianna Huffington).

As Christian reveals, once you become aware of the key differences between luck and serendipity, you can indeed create your own "smart luck." The practical tips he gives in this episode can help you overcome the biases that hold you back from having more of this luck in your life.

As always, we want to hear how these strategies work for you, so please share your takeaways and experiences with us, and here's to helping you create more "luck" in your own life moving forward!
