Film Marketing Review - The One About 'No Way Out'07 Sep 202300:21:59

"Is it a crime of passion, or an act of treason?"

In this extract from 'Two Geeks And A Marketing Podcast' Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards celebrate the recording of their 100th film marketing review with a classic thriller chosen by one of their guests!

We look at the marketing for this 1987 edge of the seat political thriller, from the original trailer to the official Lobby Cards and the different photography used to promote 'No Way Out' to the press and media.

We of course spent time reminiscing about the great storyline and the captivating performances from Kevin Costner, Gene Hackman, Sean Young and Will Patton whose character is essential to make the film work!

Finally, we ask how different things could have turned out had they marketed this as an erotic thriller?

Film Marketing Review - The One About 'Oppenheimer'07 Sep 202300:27:05

Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards review and react to the making and marketing of another greatly anticipated movie by Chris Nolan.

We study the evolution of the posters, the trailers, the interactive website, the choice of colours and calligraphy, the IMAX key message, the many featurettes and the clever countdown PR stunt in advance of the worldwide release of Oppenheimer.

This conversation was originally recorded for episode 103 of 'Two Geeks And A Marketing Podcast'.

Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards have a lot of fun revisiting Guy Ritchie’s second film, the darkly funny London gangster story with an ensemble cast of weird and wonderful characters: Boris the Blade, Doug the Head, Brick Top, and of course, Brad Pitt’s incomprehensible gypsy boxing supremo!

We look back at the 2000 poster design, the press coverage, the countless blog articles, podcasts and youtube reviews and retrospectives and the 4 key marketing lessons inspired by the making and promotion of the most quotable British gangster movie ever!

Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards reflect on the meaning and marketing of this masterpiece written and directed by British filmmaker Martin McDonagh and starring Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, Peter Dinklage, Caleb Landry Jones and many others.

This film, with its superb dialogue, characters and cinematography, is about consequences in a small American town. And, if you think about it, is also about the power and impact of targeted communication.

'Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri' received 223 nominations, 132 wins including two Oscars.

Film Marketing Review - The One About Phyllida Lloyd’s 'Mamma Mia'05 Sep 202300:13:03

In this extract from ‘Two Geeks And A Marketing Podcast’ Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards talk about the marketing of the 2008 box office hit and ask themselves this question: could ‘Mamma Mia! The Movie’ be the ultimate example of content repurposing?

Think about it, a pop group whose songs became a juke box musical which then became a film.

This conversation was originally recorded as part of the podcast launch series.

Film Marketing Review - The One About 'Sea Of Love'30 Aug 202300:26:03

“In search of a killer, he finds someone who’s either the love of his life or the end of it.”

Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards go back to 1989 with this superb police procedural film-noir with brilliant comedic moments between Al Pacino and John Goodman and erotic chemistry between Pacino and Ellen Barkin.

'Sea of Love' paved the way for the Femme Fatale films of the 1990s such as 'Basic Instinct', 'La Femme Nikita', and 'Final Analysis'.

We look at the brilliant posters, the lobby cards (these were the days!), the TV spots, the soundtrack, the different versions from big screens to TV and DVD releases - and reflect on how the film benefited from the return of Al Pacino after a 4-year absence.

We also consider whether the name of the film should have been different. Would adopting the literal translation of the French title have worked better?

Film Marketing Review - The One About 'Last Night In Soho'30 Aug 202300:27:06

“A murder in the past. A mystery in the future!”

The marketing promises a 1960s nostalgia fest with bright colours and a pumping soundtrack. It is in fact a murder mystery with a touch of time-travel.

In this extract from 'Two Geeks And A Marketing Podcast' Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards discuss why this fantastic and technically superb movie by Edgar Wright deserved a bigger audience and why the film failed at the box office despite the rave reviews.

'Last Night In Soho' mixes glitzy and dark elements and that is true of the promotional campaign with attention grabbing posters, trailers and social media posts - but was it enough for audiences?

Film Marketing Review - The One About 'Now You See Me'30 Aug 202300:24:44

"The first rule of magic? Always be the smartest guy in the room."

Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards look back at this exciting 2013 heist movie with a magical twist: the bank robbers are all masters of illusion.

But was the 'Now You See Me' movie accompanied by a magical marketing campaign? We review the tactics and PR stunts and see whether they managed to wow audiences or leave everyone wanting more.

This conversation was recorded for episode 77 of 'Two Geeks And A Marketing Podcast'.

Film Marketing Review - The One About 'Death On The Nile' (2022)30 Aug 202300:30:17

"Murder was just the beginning."

In this extract from 'Two Geeks And A Marketing Podcast' Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards explore the making and marketing of this lavish murder mystery with captivating performances from Kenneth Branagh and the ensemble cast.

The posters and social media marketing campaign for Death on the Nile were visually stunning, some interesting and brave decisions were made for the trailers, but the production was also troubled by scandal and the pandemic.

We look closely at what happened getting this excellent film onto the big screen.

Film Marketing Review - The One About 'Casino Royale'07 Sep 202300:25:09

"The name is Bond, James Bond."

Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards do a deep dive into the marketing of the 2006 film that introduced Daniel Craig as James Bond to the world.

We look at the approach and tactics used to promote what is essentially the reboot of one of the most famous franchises after a 4 year-gap.

There were also massive changes in style and cinematography, and a much more rugged and physical approach to storytelling.

In addition to the expected 'promo pack' and publicity, there were cleverly produced product placement TV campaigns from film sponsors themselves.

But was the overall 'Casino Royale' marketing and PR efforts strong enough to support the reboot?

Film Marketing Review - The One About 'The X-Files: I Want To Believe'30 Aug 202300:21:23

"To Find The Truth, You Must Believe."

This second X-Files film is a great detective style mystery but features none of the series usual UFO mythology or “monster of the week” storytelling and as a result did not get an entirely positive response from movie-goers.

Plus, the marketing for the film fell well short of what was needed to promote 'The X-Files: I Want To Believe' against other releases such as 'The Dark Knight'.

Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards who are huge fans of the TV series investigate the promotional campaign and make suggestions about what could have been done back in 2008 to create a much more hard hitting and immersive campaign.

This conversation was recorded for episode 59 of 'Two Geeks And A Marketing Podcast'.

Film Marketing Review - The One About 'The Silence Of The Lambs'29 Aug 202300:22:26

"From The Terrifying Best Seller."

This 1991 movie directed by Jonathan Demme is certainly terrifying in its own right.

Starring Jodie Foster as Clarice Starling, Scott Glenn as Jack Crawford, Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Hannibal Lecter and Ted Levine as Buffalo Bill, this film has a long list of the most talked about scenes including the '...and a nice Chianti' moment of course!

Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards are in full investigation mode as they review the poster design (voted number sixteen of "The 25 Best Movie Posters Ever" by Premiere), the trailers, the runaway success of the rental market and so much more!

Film Marketing Review - The One About 'A Few Good Men'29 Aug 202300:17:36

“You can’t handle the truth.”

Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards go back to the early 1990's with this masterpiece directed by Rob Reiner and written by Aaron Arkin, based on his original play.

Probably one the best known courtroom drama movies, with a perfect script where each line matters, great performances from all the cast without ever over-shadowing one another, and tense courtroom battles! 'A Few Good Men' remains a must-see film!

We review in detail the official trailer, which has the perfect structure and storytelling to really get audiences excited. But why are the trailer dialogues dominated by Jack Nicholson and other actors, with little said by Tom Cruise?

Film Marketing Review - The One About 'Nightcrawler'29 Aug 202300:21:53

In this extract from 'Two Geeks And A Marketing Podcast' Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards look back at this dark satire about 24h news channels directed by Dan Gilroy and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Bill Paxton and Riz Ahmed.

The approach to marketing 'Nightcrawler' is so entrepreneurial and almost matches the 'create your own luck' mindset adopted by the character Lou played Jake Gyllenhaal.

From early screening of incomplete work in order to attract interest from distributors to ingenious viral marketing strategies, including a fictional video résumé on Craigslist and fake social media profiles for Louis "Lou" Bloom, and so much more!

Released in 1997, this psychological thrilled directed by David Fincher is so intriguing and keeps you guessing till the end.

Film Marketing Review - The One About 'In Time'24 Aug 202300:29:18

"His crime wasn't stealing time. He was giving it away."

This great sci-fi thriller by Andrew Niccol and starring Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, Cillian Murphy is often over-looked, and wrongly so.

Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards take an in-depth look at two versions of the trailer for this time twisting film and wonder whether the original trailer may have left audiences confused and underwhelmed?

Film Marketing Review - The One About 'Prometheus'24 Aug 202300:25:28

"The search for our beginning could lead to our end."

This is what sci-fi movies are meant to be!

We're transported into a completely different world, and we praise the work of the costume designers, sets and vehicles, creature effects, sound effects engineers and that amazing soundtrack.

Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards also spend time reporting back on the incredible marketing campaign which created an interactive universe well before “Metaverse” became a common buzzword.

Film Marketing Review - The One About 'Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre'07 Sep 202300:22:35

In this extract from 'Two Geeks And A Marketing Podcast' Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards have a lot of fun talking about yet another excellent ensemble movie from Guy Ritchie.

We look at the troubled production and release caused by the Covid pandemic, concerns over the nationality of the villains and the financial troubles of the original distributor.

The marketing campaign had great elements but was underwhelming and failed to showcase how good the movie really is - but perhaps this was the right decision for the new distributor given all the delays?

This 2016 sci-fi and psychological thriller directer by Morten Tyldum and starring Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt and Michael Sheen is a spectacular looking film with incredible design and a thought provoking storyline led by two popular bankable stars.

Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards look at the marketing and influencer campaign, discover hidden messages in the posters and trailers, and ask whether the comments the promotion was misleading are justified.

Film Marketing Review - The One About 'The Rings Of Power' (Part 1)24 Aug 202300:25:29

"A grand journey is defined by its travelers."

Amazon bought the television rights for The Lord of the Rings for US$250 million in November 2017, making a five-season production commitment worth at least US$1 billion. This would make it the most expensive television series ever made.

Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards study the first six months of the extensive, worldwide marketing campaign for 'Lord Of The Rings: Rings Of Power' from teaser images to enigmatic social media posts, trailers and the amazing series of character posters.

Could this be the best teaser campaign ever?

Film Marketing Review - The One About 'The Matrix Resurrections'23 Aug 202300:18:10

In a first for Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards, they talk about a film that was yet to be released and before the marketing campaign had even started.

This was prompted by two key events:

A trailer shown at CinemaCon in August 2021 caused global debate on forums and countless speculation videos about Matrix 4.

The official trailer dropped the day before we recorded this episode, and we discuss the contents of the trailer and our expectations of the film.

It is fascinating to look back now and reflect on our own views and predictions.

Film Marketing Review - The One About 'The Tomorrow War'23 Aug 202300:22:21

This is a great addition to the time-travel sub-genre, a stunning alien invasion summer action movie released straight onto Amazon Prime in 2021.

Arguably the marketing campaign was rather US-centric, however the ingenuity of the social media posts, the partnership with media and consumer goods brands, and the PR stunts were very creative and generated much buzz and anticipation.

Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards investigate whether the claim made by by Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke became a reality: "The Tomorrow War will be a global event that will surprise and delight our customers around the world".

Film Marketing Review - The One About 'Blade'23 Aug 202300:19:18

Was this really the first Marvel movie? 10 years before Iron Man and 20 years before Black Panther?

Released in 1998 'Blade' is an exhilarating mix of vampires, science fiction and martial arts starring Wesley Snipes, Kris Kristofferson, Stephen Dorff, N’Bushe Wright and a horde blood sucking immortals.

Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards recount the making and marketing of this thrill a minute film – which unlike all the Marvel movies that followed is for a mature audience with adult themes and bloody violence.

Film Marketing Review - The One About 'The Matrix'23 Aug 202300:17:05

This film was quite simply a cinematic triumph in 1999 as the world entered the new Millennium.

'The Matrix' won 4 Oscars, grossed over $463 million on a budget of $63 million, and was the first DVD to sell over 3 million copies.

Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards look back at their experience of seeing 'The Matrix' for the first time, the unforgettable slow motion fight sequences, the outfits and accessories, the great quotes from this movie, including:

“Free … your … mind”, “Dodge this”, “There is no spoon”, “Don’t think you are – know you are”, “Welcome … to the real world”, “I know kung fu”, and “You take the red pill – you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.”

Don't worry we do find time to talk about the marketing campaign built upon the central question: What Is The Matrix?

Film Marketing Review - The One About 'The Banshees of Inisherin'07 Sep 202300:28:49

“You’re all fecking boring!"

Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards delve into the marketing of this absolutely charming and beguiling movie by director Martin McDonagh and starring Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon and many others.

Part fable, part historical critic, 'The Banshees of Inisherin' became a huge hit despite its relatively low key marketing campaign and we ask the question whether Disney+ streamed the movie up too early and harmed its cinema run.

In this extract of 'Two Geeks And A Marketing Podcast', we examine the importance of festival premieres, the poster design, the trailers, the repurposing of accolades and praises, the partnership with Tourism Ireland, and much more.

Film Marketing Review - The One About 'Blade Runner 2049'22 Aug 202300:20:47

Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards go for a deep-dive into the marketing assets and tactics used to promote Harrison Ford return to the role of Deckard.

This sequel to the 1982 Sci-Fi classic was directed by Denis Villeneuve and released in 2017. 'Blade Runner 2049' is just as visually stunning as the first movie (set in 2019) and some of the marketing assets are outstanding and simple.

But does the film live up to the hype? Is it a worthy sequel? Has too much time passed between the two films?

Let's find out in this conversation originally recorded for episode 28 of 'Two Geeks And A Marketing Podcast'.

Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards have great fun talking about the making and marketing of the sequel we never knew we needed!

'Mad Max: Fury Road' has a fascinating development history dated back to 1997 and the marketing campaign is just as intriguing, from impactful teasers to PR stunts such as a drive-in screening, dusty car-wash competition and Warboys surprise concerts, it is all a bit mad!

Film Marketing Review - The One About 'The Lords Of The Rings Trilogy'22 Aug 202300:19:25

“ONCE YOU GO DOWN A ROAD, YOU TAKE IT THROUGH TO THE END.” – Peter Jackson

And to the end that road was taken, all the way to the 76th Academy Awards where Peter Jackson and the cast and crew won all eleven awards for which The Return Of The King was nominated, including Best Picture.

Some 20 years later, The Lord Of The Rings trilogy remains a captivating lesson in filmmaking as well as film marketing.

In this discussion recorded for the launch of 'Two Geeks And A Marketing Podcast', Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards reflect on how Peter Jackson used early vlogging and other marketing techniques to woo three different target audiences.

Film Marketing Review - The One About 'Tremors'16 Aug 202300:27:15

"They say there’s nothing new under the sun. But under the ground... "

Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards have a lot of fun talking about the making and marketing of the most beloved horror comedy of the 1990's.

We celebrate the hard-work and dedication of the cast and crew and in particular how they held their ground when distributors seemingly struggled to understand how to market 'Tremors'.

Film Marketing Review - The One About 'Halloween Ends'16 Aug 202300:23:38

"This is Laurie Strode’s last stand."

In this extract from 'Two Geeks And A Marketing Podcast', Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards take an extensive look at the character driven marketing campaign for the last Halloween Movie.

This is a bitter-sweet film marketing review as we say good-bye to Laurie Strode first introduced to a worldwide audience in 1978.

The sense of nostalgia is palpable in all elements of the marketing campaigns, from posters to multiple versions of the trailers, exclusive BTS, a '80s style retro game, a fun video editing competition and final farewell from Jamie Lee Curtis herself for NBC, entitled 'A Final Word From The Final Girl'.

So long, and thanks for the memories. Pascal and Roger

Film Marketing Review - The One About 'Knives Out'06 Sep 202300:25:13

Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards take a close look at the bright and colourful marketing and social media campaigns for this genuinely different whodunnit with plenty of twists and turns, and a surprising dénouement.

This is a full-on investigation into the teaser posters, multiple trailers, character posters, the Instagram #KnivesOutChallenge, a black and white mockumentary, The Get Your Cut treasure hunt and... that jumper worn by actor Chris Evans.

There are most certainly some great lessons about planning your the social media campaign and reacting swiftly to your audience's comments.

This conversation was originally recorded for episode 90 of 'Two Geeks And A Marketing Podcast'.

Film Marketing Review - The One About 'The Shallows'16 Aug 202300:30:30

Wrongly dismissed by the media as a 'Jaws' rip-off, this is a completely different kind of shark movie. 'The Shallows' is an exciting, tense and edge of seat scary tale with some incredible cinematography and landscapes.

Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards examine the marketing campaign from the tense trailers, gorgeous colourful posters and clever TV spots.

We look at the tongue in cheek social media campaign which also introduced us to one of the stars of the film. Stephen “Sully” Seagull. Unlike the shark, Sully wasn’t CGI. He was real and put in a fine performance!

This conversation was recorded for episode 83 of 'Two Geeks And A Marketing Podcast'.

"It’s Always Someone You Know!"

After a 10 year gap the Scream franchise returns with another Ghost Face killer on the loose.

Pascal Fintoni and Roger Edwards look at the posters, trailers, featurettes and go for a deep dive into the remarkable social media marketing campaign which included an official Woodsboro Horror Film Club account.

But did the Facebook and Tik Tok algorithms get it right?

And was it a good decision to remove the number from the official title?

Let's find out!

Film Marketing Review - The One About 'Dog Soldiers'15 Aug 202300:20:33

In this extract from 'Two Geeks And A Marketing Podcast' we celebrate the 20th Anniversary of one of the best werewolf movies of all time.

Whilst there is little material available online about the marketing that supported the 2002 launch of 'Dog Soldiers', the stories about how the team brought the production to the screen are just as fascinating.

There’s also real drama in the hunt for the lost negatives which almost scuppered the launch of a 4K Blu Ray.

A real lesson in entrepreneurship and ingenuity from the director Neil Marshall and the cast and crew who delivered a bitch of a werewolf movie!
