John Coe - National Association for Primary Education
Episode 408
lundi 5 août 2024 • Duration 44:00
This is a recording from 2018 with John Coe. He shares his educational experiences, views and involvement with the National Association for Primary Education since 1980. John sadly passed away earlier this year and I wanted to share this conversation so you can hear the essence of NAPE and their continued support for primary education.
This is my celebration and commemoration of John who has influenced me greatly.
John Coe began teaching in Essex. After primary headships, first of a small rural school and then of an urban school serving an underprivileged community; he joined the West Riding of Yorkshire authority as Inspector of Schools. His second local authority appointment extended over 16 years as Senior Adviser to Oxfordshire. In 1984 he moved into Higher Education as Course Leader of the PGCE Primary Course at the London Institute of Education. A later move to Oxford Brookes University involved him in research and both initial and in-service education. He is a Fellow of the University and a founding member of NAPE.

There are currently five short films: Three Billy Goats Gruff; Jack and the Beanstalk; Ananse and the Monkeys; the Great Race; and The Little Fir Tree. A further five will be available on Monday 25 March. The films feature an array of guest musicians, including multi-instrumentalist, Sidiki Dembélé; Guzheng player, Zi Lan Liao; and DeaF trumpeter, Sean Chandler.
On the BBC Teach website, the classroom videos are accompanied by comprehensive activities and listening guides, exploring musical skills and cross-curricula connections for non-specialist early years and primary-level teachers.

309: InnerWill Leadership Institute with Dr. Thomas Epperson
jeudi 8 décembre 2022 • Duration 50:58
Dr. Thomas Epperson is the president of InnerWill Leadership Institute and has over 20 years of experience as a leadership coach, facilitator, and speaker, and he regularly works with clients to help transform leaders and their organizations.
Tom is a certified business coach and has a doctorate in leadership from The George Washington University. Tom is currently an instructor in Virginia Commonwealth Universities’ Executive MBA Program. He is the author of InnerWill, Developing Better People, Braver Leaders, and a Wiser World Through the Practice of Values-Based Leadership.
Tom believes that leadership is a choice, not a title, and that our responsibility as leaders is to make a positive difference in the lives of those around us. Tom balances high expectations of himself and others with relentless optimism about the ability of individuals to make our organizations, families, and communities amazing places to live, work, and grow. Tom believes that leadership is a powerful force for good in the world, if we choose to do so; his personal mission in life is to help others develop the skills to make that choice more often than not.
Tom works hard to be a great husband and father; he’s married to a strong, creative woman and has two fantastic sons who have taught him that we can learn as much about ourselves and our leadership at home as we can at work.
Born out of Luck Companies, InnerWillLeadership Institute was founded to teach other leaders how to build values-based organizations which ignite the potential in people. After an 85-year history as a successful business, President and CEO Charlie Luck IV realized that the business had so much more potential if alignment and collaboration of senior management could be improved. This led to a Values Based Leadership (VBL) journey—for his family and for the workplace. Ultimately, the Values Based Leadership principles and practices were shared with every employee at Luck Companies and every Luck family member. As a result, Luck Companies is the largest family-held and family-run aggregate business in the country, ranks in the top three most engaged places to work in the US, and is a thriving organization built for the future.
The impact to Luck Companies, and to the individuals touched and transformed by the VBL journey, inspired the launch of InnerWill. Leadership is a choice, not a title –a conscious choice to work first on yourself to in turn positively impact the lives of those around you. Developing self-awareness takes tenacity and grit, while standing up for your core values take courage. We reflected on our definition of leadership and the strength needed to achieve it and chose the name InnerWill.
Today, InnerWill teaches the necessary skills to strengthen leadership capabilities and drive results through the practice of VBL. More than a training company, InnerWillis a 501 c3 nonprofit that invests in the organizations and people that we serve through customized solutions built to ensure positive and measurable impacts.

308: Ecsell Institute, Sport & Education with Bill Eckstrom
lundi 5 décembre 2022 • Duration 49:42
Bill Eckstrom is the CEO and founder of EcSell Institute. Bill’s robust professional career path has encompassed sales, sales leadership, executive leadership with both private and publicly traded companies, and as a founder of start-ups. In 2008, he established EcSell Institute to fill a void he witnessed and personally experienced in the coaching and leadership profession within businesses. Since then, Ecsell’s research and improvement programming has also been utilized in the athletic and academic worlds, spawning his new start-ups Ecsell Sports and Ecsell Education in 2020.
In 2017 and again in 2022, Bill was invited to the TEDx stage where he shared his research and experiences in renowned talks that have been viewed by almost five million people throughout the world.
Bill co-authored the book The Coaching Effect: What great leaders do to increase sales, enhance performance, and sustain growth which was introduced in April, 2019, and has been a best-seller since the first week of its release.
As a result of his broad experiences in the realms of business and athletics, along with his company’s research-based findings, Bill is a popular guest on podcasts, radio shows and has been featured in Forbes and Inc. magazines, and many other publications. His work as a keynote speaker is highly regarded throughout the world. While his audiences call him “profoundly authentic,” “highly entertaining,” and more, Bill is most proud of the fact his material is based on EcSell’s science and research—he does not present motivational fluff.
Lincoln, Nebraska is home for Bill and his wife. Together they have three children, Will Jr, Claire, and Maddie. Philanthropically, Bill prefers a very hands-on approach as evidenced by his current involvement and passion-- therapy dog work. He and his four-legged companion, Aspen, visit children in hospitals, senior citizens in nursing homes, students in academic settings, and offer emotional support to various athletic teams. Bill also has a strong need to be in the outdoors and finds time each year to spend in field and stream with his children and close friends.

Molly Bolding is an education journalist, inclusion consultant and online educator, based in London. She has been teaching and tutoring online since 2018 but has also taught in classrooms in the UK and Japan. Molly mostly teached English, both to UK curriculums and as EFL, but has previously tutored History, Geography, Maths, Science, university applications and personal statements. She also provides educational services as part of her consulting work. Molly's first book, ‘The Online Tutor’s Toolkit’, is out with Routledge. It contains everything you need to know to get started as an online tutor: it covers the essentials of tutoring, choosing your tech and software, managing homework, and getting set up alongside detailed guidance focusing on each level of tuition. With techniques developed through research and first-hand experience, Molly explains exactly how to turn existing subject knowledge into effective tutoring for students of all ages in a variety of subjects.
Divided into two parts, the first answers the logistical questions facing every new tutor such as: what equipment do I need? Where can I apply? How much should I charge? The second half focuses on how to tutor different age groups effectively and subject-specific areas including English, Maths, and Science, as well as the author’s tried-and-tested ‘5 step’ process for choosing a subject, assessing a student, and planning their first lessons. There is also information on how to support students writing personal statements and applying to university, as well as teaching English as a Second Language.
Alongside tailored, up-to-date information on available software, hardware, exam specifications, and the online tutoring marketplace, the book contains a 10-week timetable of adaptable lesson plans so new tutors can get started immediately. Finally, there are two additional downloadable chapters which expand on less common subjects and another which includes a digital download of every resource from the book.
With suggestions for resources, homework, and timings to support you at every stage, this is an essential read for anyone wanting to succeed as an online tutor. It's also insightful for teachers and TAs who want to develop more 1:1 techniques, home educators and parents who want to support their children with exams or university applications, and early career educators of all kinds.
