Daan Timmers

Lives on a historic sailing ship in the canals of downtown Amsterdam, right across from the NEMO Museum. Although, since the 2020 pandemic, she's temporarily located her family to a secret river location, deep in the forests of the Netherlands!

Our interview with Daan:

  1. You are here to talk about your paleo expedition, but tell us first, what is your life like when not on expedition?
  2. How do you view natural movement and its place in your life as a movement educator, in your own life, as a parent?
  3. What are your sincere feelings about people’s interest and infatuation with the paleo diet in recent years?
  4. Tell us about the year you took to prepare for the expedition? What did you have to learn? How was the learning itself?
  5. Let’s dive in, and learn about the expedition itself: the mission, the day to day life, gathering and hunting, rest and energy, the collective space, movement….I would love to be a fly on the wall as you tell the story.
  6. I was really touched by you talking about the keeper of the fire. I will read a little passage you wrote about it here. Can you talk about your relationship to fire and water before and after the expedition?
  7. Tell me about your sense of our human activity effect on the environment - how did the expedition influence your view of our modern world?
  8. What was it like coming back and starting “life as usual”
  9. What was the effect of the expedition on your mental health, what did you learn, grow into or start to practice that you didn’t before?

Who is Daan Timmers?

Daan loves being part of nature and shares this connection by homeschooling her 3 kids in nature as well as rewilding others to deepened their nature connection.

She offers a wild range of Earth Skills like ancients crafts, sit spots, games and stories.

With her tribe, she aims for a nomadic lifestyle roaming the water with their historical sailing boat.  She has been teaching Restorative Exercises for years for people to get connected to their bodies.

Now she takes people outdoors to experience Ancestral Movement hands-on.

About Andrea Bell, LCSW

The primary focus of Adrea's therapy practice is the treatment of trauma and its aftereffects. Along with Somatic Experiencing, she ncorporates aspects of other therapeutic modalities, including humanistic, behavioral and psychodynamic approaches.

Andrea is also an ecotherapist, which means that she supports healing the relationship between nature and humans. She helps people access and experience their love for nature, and how nature supports self-regulation (and feeling good!). She also support people in moving through the grief and pain of eco-anxiety, including engaging in giving back to nature.

Andrea serves as an Assistant for the Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute, where she organizes and helps teach SE to clinicians at SE trainings in Los Angeles, Orange County, and internationally.

  • You are an MFT  (Marriage and Family Therapist) and SEP (Somatic Experiencing Practitioner), how did you become interested in eco-therapy? Are there any defining experiences, say from your childhood that you think prepared you for this path?

About Dr. Mike T. Nelson and Jodie Fabulous Nelson

Dr. Mike T Nelson and Jodie Fabulous Nelson are a perfect example of opposites attract.

Dr. Mike T. Nelson, PhD, MSME, CSCS, CISSN, is a research fanatic who specializes in metabolic flexibility and heart rate variability, as well as an online trainer, adjunct professor, faculty member at the Carrick Institute, presenter, creator of the Flex Diet Cert, kiteboarder, and (somewhat incongruously) heavy-metal enthusiast.

The techniques he's developed, and the results Mike gets for his clients have been featured in international magazines, in scientific publications, and on websites across the globe.

In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife, lifting odd objects, reading research, and kiteboarding as much as possible.

Jodie Nelson has a bachelors degree in both Secondary English Education and Communication. And since she loves words so much, she went back to school to get a masters in communication.

A published author, lover of dance and theater, Jodie experiences everything as a Broadway musical.

Mr. Mole is a character is based on Dr. Mike’s love for the acquisition and practical application of science to fitness and life.

Mr. Mole started as a funny saying between Mike and me.

He liked to turn off all the lights as it got closer to bedtime. Me? I can’t see very well in the dark. So, I always turn lights on in each room as the sun starts to go down.

I one night, as Mike left his desk from a long session of research rabbit-holing, he came around the corner squinting into my brightly lit room. I said, “Hey there, Mr. Mole. How’s it going?”

That little exchange started a funny conversation every time I would find him huddled in the dark researching at his desk as I came in to switch the lights on.

After one of these nights, one of us brought up the idea to write a children’s’ book about Mr. Mole going to bed. And then the idea got bigger.

“What if we write a children’s’ book about healthy sleep habits that adults will read to their children?”

The action steps would be simple enough for a child, yet probably things that many adults haven’t incorporated into their sleep and bedtime ritual.

This is how Mr. Mole was born and he’s evolved so much since then. It’s going to be a wonderful book for everyone. We can’t wait to share it with you!

Self-Care History

You’ve been a writer for quite a while now. When did you first start hearing about self-care in the media? What do you feel was the social climate at the time?

Why do you think the wellness field was so dominated by nutrition and exercise and how we look and just recently catching up with our mental and emotional health? Did more of us start reaching a burn out point?

Where to start?

If someone is brand new to the idea of self-care, what do you feel is a good place to start? What ideas and steps were foundational for you?

Learning how to recognize and honor your needs, and building healthy boundaries seems to be hard for many of us. How have you navigated through these challenges yourself?

How do you help your clients and readers navigate these challenges?

Self-Care in the Media

Without oversimplifying the social, political, economic and personal aspects of self-care, where do you feel that the media has done a great job of encouraging self-care?

Where have they missed the mark?

How are the self-care market and industry a part of the dark side of this?

Knowing when to start, and avoiding the traps

What are some of the common symptoms and signs that you see in yourself and clients that point to the need for self-care?

How can we avoid the trap of self-care becoming one more thing we need to check off our endless lists?

What about body positivity?

One of our listeners asked how one can be more body-positive or body-kind.

She shared she is terrified of going to the beach with people she doesn’t know well, for fear of being judged and rejected.

How does one accept their body when the media is constantly pouring out messages that we need to be thin or look a certain way. How can we start to accept our bodies the way we are?

I (Galina) personally practice very careful media hygiene – I have curated my social media feeds and the media I consume carefully to include body-positive role models and exclude images that make me spin down a cycle of self-rejection and self-objectification.

What advice do you have for her?

How has self-care progressed and changed?

Self-care may have started as a medical necessity, moved through the stage of civil rights and female rights movement, but now it seems like it’s addressing more than just specific groups – it matters to everyone.

Where do you see self-care as a way to connect to our communities and the world?

WHAT AN AMAZING SHOW!

I actually listened to the whole show again last night because Michael was so much fun and inspirational!

Michael Bunker is a plain, beyond-off-grid farmer and author of both fiction and non-fiction.

He's a farmer, a father, and a husband, not in that particular order, but everything he does, he does deliberately, all the while living off off-grid!

We had a great talk about real food, pre-industrial food preparation and storage methods, fermented foods, and the differences in taste and quality between real bacon and that stuff sold as bacon in your local store!

Those things are fun and important, but there was also an underlying, important theme of simplicity and being deliberate about how to live life.

We - as a society - talk about how crazy life is these days. It's a theme that's so up front and in your face that you can no longer claim it's 'underlying.' Life. Is. Crazy.

So, listen in as Galina and I talk with Michael about being more deliberate. How you can use the concept yourself to highlight and honor what's important in your life, that of your family, and of your friends.

Chewy Olive Oil Chocolate Chip Cookies

Originally made for the Hands-On Brain Works Cooking Class with visiting Chef Dr. Annie Fenn

Makes 18-24 cookies

  • ¾ cup chickpea flour
  • ¾ cup oat flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ¾ tsp kosher salt
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 cup coconut sugar
  • ½ cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 6 oz chopped bittersweet chocolate (60-70%)
  • A few pinches of pink Himalayan salt, or other flaky salt

In a large bowl, whisk together the flours, baking powder, salt and baking soda.

In a separate bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the sugar with the sugar and oil. Add the egg and the vanilla until combined.

 Add chocolate and fold in with a rubber spatula.

Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour.

Preheat the oven to 350ºF and line two cookie sheets with parchment paper.

Using a tablespoon measure, scoop out the cookie dough and place on the prepared baking sheet, leaving 2 inches between cookies.

Bake for 16 to 18 minutes, or until slightly browned. Rotate pans midway through the cooking time.

Remove and sprinkle with salt.

Let the cookies cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.

Keys to success - Make sure the dough is thoroughly chilled. Resist the urge to make bigger than 1 tablespoon-sized cookies—they will spread and not longer be chewy!

Also, underbake slightly. Keep an eye on the cookies towards the end of the cooking time and pull them from the oven before you think they are done. They will continue to set up for a few minutes on the baking sheet.

Petra Fisher Bio

Petra was certified as a Restorative Exercise Specialist by Nutritious Movement in January 2013 and has completed over 200 hours of additional continuing education training from Nutritious Movement since that time.

She is a teacher trainer for Nutritious Movement, and an instructor for the international Move Your DNA workshop program.

She was certified to teach MovNat Level 1 in October, 2018. and certified as a Functional Range Conditioning Mobility Specialist in March, 2019.

She lives and works as a full-time traveler since August 2018, camping, moving and exploring the world with her partner Chris in their 2003 Toyota 4Runner, Sophie. 

Prior to her career as a movement coach, Petra was a practicing Ontario lawyer, graduating with a JD from the University of Toronto in 2004.

In your book you talk about Body musculoskeletal stress patterns common to all people? What does that look like and how can one know they are dealing with that?

Let's talk about the importance of breathing. If stress put you in a pattern how does breathing will keep you there? And how does it get you out of it? How do stress and breathing relate to pain and loss of movement variability?

I keep a copy of "Why do I hurt" in my waiting room, and my clients are always amazed that pain is really in the brain. Can you explain that in relationship to resuming training and exercise? How does movement help pain in particular?

What is the logical progression of returning to full activity after injury or surgery? What can someone expect and how can your book help with that? At what point does one pick it up and go! Like, could one do just the resets at first?

We are excited to have a very special guest today. We met her last year in November, when we visited the Markegard ranch in Northern California. We were really struck by the beauty and harmony of the environment there. Rolling green hills met ocean and sky and it felt like we were taken thousands of years back to a time when people and nature lived in harmony.

We got to experience the deep nourishing quality of the local food and learn a little about how humans and land can have a hopeful future together. We wanted to know more and knew our listeners would love that, too. When we heard today’s guest, Doniga Markegard had written a book, we reached out to get her on the show.

We’ve just finished reading her book, Dawn Again – Tracking the Wisdom of the Wild, and we love it, and can’t wait for you to hear all about it.

1. Please tell us a bit about your day. What does it look like living on a ranch? Is that much different than the life of say, your great- grandparents who had their homestead? What do you do in a day and how do you balance all the care for the ranch, the customers, motherhood, homeschool? What's a day in the life of Doniga?

About Jacqueline Saszi

After working in the adolescent drug and alcohol treatment field for 12 years and becoming very disillusioned, Jacqueline took a leap of faith and followed her heart from Phoenix, Arizona back to her hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. She took an administrative position with Linda Hoopes and Resilience Alliance, and thus began her journey into the world of organizational change and individual resilience.

She became certified as a professional coach, as well as completing a certification as a Personal Resilience Practitioner in 2010. In 2011, at the age of 35, she found myself with a back injury that left her disabled for months. In order to avoid major surgery, she received treatment from chiropractors and various bodyworkers, and eventually found Katy Bowman and Nutritious Movement™. After studying with Katy for 3+ years both online and in person, she completed the Restorative Exercise Specialist/Certified Personal Trainer Certification.

With her training and experience working with young people and their families, her personal commitment to health and wellness, and her training and education, she was able to start her own business and do work that she was passionate about: consulting and coaching with individuals and organizations to guide them through transition and uncertainty, and working with people to improve their physical health using Restorative Exercise and natural movement.

Yep, Chapter 41, and this podcast episode,  are all about vision, and improving it without the use of glasses!

About Claudia

Before Claudia Muehlenweg became a Bates Method Teacher, she was a graphic designer, a field where good vision and perfect color perception are a necessity. But Claudia didn’t always have great vision.

Her interest to improve eyesight naturally came early on, because she wore glasses as a child — starting as a toddler up until the age of 15 — for far-sightedness and convergent squint (esophoria).

Like most kids with glasses, Claudia felt socially awkward, and hated not being able to see perfectly. To make matters worse, her blurry vision increased after wearing them, as did the merciless teasing in school.

As she became more active in sports, she wore the glasses as little as possible, and eventually began trying the Bates Method in the hopes of getting rid them altogether, and it worked!

No more glasses!

As a result of practicing the method from a book on her own and playing handball (hand-eye coordination), the eye doctor eventually declared that her “vision was normal and that she wouldn’t need her glasses anymore.”

By the time Claudia started college, she was a new person with new, sharper vision. Her new-found confidence ultimately helped her land a design job with one of the top advertising firms in Germany.

Much later, she decided to formally study the Bates Method and enrolled at the College of Vision Education in London, UK. In early 2010, Claudia became a Certified Bates Method Teacher. During the training, she started to teach in a low-cost vision clinic in London, as well as her own practice and have helped many people since improve their vision.

Her teaching lineage connects directly to Dr. Bates: One of her teachers, Margaret Montgomery, who has been teaching the Bates Method since 1985, was taught by Evelyn B. Sage in London, who was trained by Madeleine Fousset, a student of Dr. Bates. Claudia’s other teacher, Aileen Whiteford, is an expert in binocularity and eye dominance, something Bates himself didn’t focus on. With both the Bates teachings and the knowledge she gained in eye fusion and dominance from Aileen, she has the expertise to work with all kinds of eyesight challenges.

  • When we started working with nutrition clients we were pretty focused on a paleo-style diet, which is how I learned about you. How has your relationship with the paleo diet changed over time?
  • I’ve always seen you as a voice-of-reason when it comes to nutrition. Even on the Robb Wolf show you weren’t particularly dogmatic on paleo.
  • Do you have core principles that you think are important for a good healthy diet? What about for weight loss?
  • Is it okay if we talk about keto? When is keto the right diet?
  • The Atkins diet got a lot of pushback from the paleo community so why is keto getting a pass?
  • Carnivore? We have a friend doing it keto style because she had a hard time controlling her blood sugar on other diets (even keto with a few veggies here and there). What’s going on here? Is the carnivore diet good for certain people?
  • Every year paleo-style diets get slammed as unhealthy by lists like the US News and World Reports diet rankings. Meanwhile, low-fat, low salt, and plant-based diets with less evidence of effectiveness and wholesomeness do better. What’s going on there?

To many, the thyroid is a mystery, but The Paleo Thyroid Solution aims to fix that.

 

Elle Russ, is the author The Paleo Thyroid Solution. She is a health and life coach, and the host of the Primal Blueprint Podcast.

Elle wrote The Paleo Thyroid Solution after consulting with over two dozen doctors. She worked with endocrinologists, internal medicine specialists, and general practice MDs, but her thyroid condition was only getting worse. Nothing from her doctors resembled a solution, or even hope.

Elle took control of her own health and resolved two severe bouts of hypothyroidism on her own – including an acute Reverse T3 problem. Through a devoted paleo/primal lifestyle, intensive personal experimentation, and a radically modified approach to thyroid hormone replacement therapy. Elle went from fat, foggy, and fatigued to fit, focused, and full of life!

Elle has a B.A in Philosophy from The University of California at Santa Cruz and is a certified Primal Health Coach. She is on the advisory board of The Primal Health Coach Program created by Mark Sisson, bestselling author of The Primal Blueprint. Susan McLaughlin is a physical therapist specializing in men’s and women’s pelvic health.

There’s some interesting info over at this wikipedia page, including ‘Feet that have never worn shoes never exhibit problems such as bunions, corns, and ‘fallen arches’, as well as having a much reduced incidence of problems such as callouses.’

Not that wikipedia is a solid source, and I hope these ideas go more mainstream. The idea that feet need shoes to solve problems is getting old. Shoes are a big part of the problem, not necessarily the solution.

Mickey Treskott - Author and Nutritional Therapy Practitioner

Mickey is a certified Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and author of three best-selling books, The Autoimmune Paleo Cookbook, The Autoimmune Wellness Handbook and The Nutrient-Dense Kitchen. She is also co-host The Autoimmune Wellness Podcast and co-teach The AIP Certified Coach Practitioner Training Program with Angie Alt.

Her journey to the Autoimmune Protocol started as a vegan, having been diagnosed with both celiac and Hashimoto’s disease. Instead of feeling better after my diagnosis, she continued to suffer many months of deteriorating health until she made the transition to the Autoimmune Protocol, slowly reversing vitamin and mineral deficiencies and greatly improving my health.

Today, she lives with her husband, Noah on their homestead in the Willamette Valley, Oregon, with their cat Savannah and horse Bear.

When she’s not getting crazy in the kitchen or researching how to live better with autoimmune disease, she can be found riding horses on my family’s farm, obsessively knitting a pair of socks, or figuring out how to build a non-toxic, sustainable home.

She believes food can be medicine when used properly.  Within her own family, the proper use of food has cured numerous diseases.

Her husband had high blood pressure, constant headaches, and aches and pains from playing football in the NFL. Maria was diagnosed with Hashimoto's and her children suffered from ADHD, eczema, asthma, and leaky gut.  All of this is gone with making simple, slow changes to the 4 pillars of health.

Maria specializes in children with ADD (all 7 types), plus kids with behavioral, weight and skin issues.
