Queer dating: your place or mine?

mercredi 24 mai 2023Duration 01:03:03

As Shakespeare famously wrote, ‘To date or not to date, that is the question’. Or was that Léa and Casey who said that instead? As you might have guessed, this episode will focus on dating life - whether it’s a comedy or a tragedy, it’s up to you to decide. This episode, our hosts are joined by a very special first guest, Maria, who is also one of our producers.

Over the course of the episode, we will go over some interesting dating scenarios, including going on a date with your date’s ex, discovering Hong Kong through dating, and sneaking into some random person’s yacht for that extra romantic (or criminal) twist. Our three queer-eteers will then move on to talk about how to find a date and, when meeting people outside of apps, how to tell if they’re into you: according to Léa, it’s all about the fingers. After Maria quizzes the hosts on which dating scenarios they would swipe left or right on, the conversation then switches to dating apps, their features, and the experiences that Casey, Léa and Maria had with them.

As always, stay tuned until the very end of the episode: you wouldn’t want to miss Lea’s pick up line to get yourselves ready for your next date!

Outline:

00:00 – 03:34 – Intro and topic of the day: dating life

03:35 – 14:45 – Interesting and ‘interesting’ dating scenarios

14:46 – 22:16 – How to find a date

22:17 – 26:27 – Flirting or just appreciation? How to tell if they’re into you

26:28 – 30:15 – Play with us: swipe right/swipe left

30:16 – 49:31 – Dating apps: which one is the best one?

49:32 – 01:00:43 – The next step: where will you take your date?

01:00:44 – 01:03:06 – Outro, how to contact us and Lea’s pick up line

Coming out, ready or not

mercredi 17 mai 2023Duration 51:09

What do the French version of Costco, our host Lea and anime characters have in common?

Listen to today’s episode to find out! While you’re at it, you might also be interested in the episode’s actual topic: being outed. Drawing from the Rebel Wilson experience, as well as from personal stories, pop culture references and caller testimonies, Casey and Lea go through the questionable assumptions and motivations that underlie outing someone, and the effect this can have on a person’s life. They then question the relationship between these elements and the fear of coming out and being out that so many queer people face.

The episode ends on a lighter note, as our hosts remind us that ‘queer people are nice’ (clearly an understatement), as can be seen through the films, series and projects that have been created to support and protect the LGBTQ+ community. And, as Lea shows us, queer people can be even nicer when they try to chat you up using a spicy pick-up line.

Outline

00:00 – 04:17 – Intro, gay day check-up and Lea’s Metro romance

04:18 – 11:55 – Being outed, the Rebel Wilson experience and personal experiences of being outed

11:56 – 14:43 – Quick spoiler alert before discussing framing outing through pop culture: The Morning Show

14:44 – 23:40 – Back to Rebel Wilson: the questionable motivation and assumptions behind outing someone

23:41 – 34:38 – Where does the fear of coming out or being outed come from?

34:39 – 44:55 – Caller testimonies and the consequences of being outed

44:56 – 49:26 – ‘Queer people are nice’: projects, series and films showing a brighter side by supporting and protecting the LGBTQ+ community

49:27 – 51:09 – Lea’s pick-up line and outro.

Dyke drama: fact or fiction?

mercredi 10 mai 2023Duration 42:21

Would you move in with your girlfriend soon after the first date, u-haul style? Or would you rather be your girlfriend’s friendly neighbour for 18 months before moving in together, like Casey?

On today’s episode, our hosts deal with lesbian relationship stereotypes, and the 'drama' that is often associated with them. After talking about Reading Pride and their favourite pride festivities, Casey and Lea start today’s discussion by sharing some statistics (and raising a host of questions) about lesbian relationships.

They then delve into how the perception of women in society and the general lack of healthy and positive representations of lesbian relationships are to blame for the equation ‘lesbians + romantic relationship = drama’. And what if you add a conservative religious environment as a further variable, as Casey does?

Well, it should come as no surprise that perceptions of queer relationships and their legitimacy become even more negative. Ending the episode on a lighter note, our hosts share their favourite lesbian drama scenes as witnessed on the small screen (watch out The L Word and Killing Eve fans!) and Lea’s choice of pick-up line takes a dramatic turn as it transforms into a mild lesbian dad joke.

Outline:

00:00 – 06:32 – Intro, gay day check-up and Reading Pride

06:33 – 08:20 – Today’s topic: relationship 'drama'

08:21 – 13:44 – Polar opposites: Lea and Casey’s experience of lesbian relationships

13:45 – 21:08 – Is 'Lesbian Bed Death' a thing, and what about other types of relationships?

21:09 – 32:53 – Lesbian relationship drama and the assumptions underlying the stereotype

32:54 – 39:58 – Favourite bit of lesbian drama on television? The L Word and Killing Eve

39:59 – 41:59 – Outro and Lea’s pick-up line

The statistics discussed during the segment on 'Lesbian Bed Death', together with other fun facts about lesbian relationships, can be found here.

Flannel shirts and short hair

mercredi 3 mai 2023Duration 42:37

In this episode, our hosts dive into the fascinating world of lesbian stereotypes. After discussing the L Word (spoiler alert!), Reading Pride, and how gay their days were, Casey and Lea test their knowledge of lesbian labels before starting to unpack them.

What follows is a list of the elements that fuel certain lesbian stereotypes and aesthetics, but also some doubts about whether one lesbian stereotype fits all. Once Léa has shared her advice with Casey on how to confidently register as a lesbian without an undercut and a limitless array of flannels, the two hosts talk about the pros and cons of passing as straight and discuss how tricky it can be to find lesbian friends in a new city.

The episode ends with a listener question, a non-vegan cookie and a PG 13 pick-up line.

Outline:

00:00 – 06:30 – Intro, Lea preparing for Reading Pride, gaydar check-up and The L Word

06:31 – 08:12 – Our topic for today: lesbian stereotypes and fitting into them

08:13 – 15:18 – Lesbian labels quiz

15:19 – 21:29 – Elements people often associate with being or presenting as a lesbian

21:30 – 23:10 – Fitting into a lesbian stereotype and being perceived as gay

23:11 – 29:27 – What if you don’t feel like you fit into any category?

29:28 – 34:46 – Pros and cons of passing as straight and finding lesbian friends

34:47 – 41:04 – Listener question: how to understand if your crush is gay?

41:05 – 42:55 – Outro, how to contact us and Lea’s pick-up line
