Conversation with Jackie DeAngelis About Breast Cancer21 Aug 202401:06:15
This episode of our podcast focuses on breast cancer awareness.
Our special guest in the SiriusXM studio in New York City is Jackie DeAngelis with the Fox Business Network.

Jackie is the co-host of the Big Money Show which airs Monday through Friday at 1 PM EST on the FOX Business Network. Jackie has been a guest on our program before and has shared her health journey with breast cancer.

Her breast cancer was first identified at the time of her first mammogram which was done when she was 40. Much to her astonishment, the mammogram was abnormal, consistent with breast cancer, and she outlines her diagnosis and surgical course over the past few years.

The big take-home message is to get screened appropriately, understand your family and personal risk factors for breast cancer, and strive to maintain a healthy lifestyle that will reduce your risk of not only breast cancer, but other chronic disease. You can keep in touch with Jackie DeAngelis on by going to X (formerly Twitter) @JackieDeAngelis.

Dads that Cook22 Jun 202400:27:16

In this episode, we introduce you to Michael Varieur. He is a father of three young children and takes cooking for his family quite seriously. Mike is a tinkerer in the kitchen, experimenting with new techniques always trying to figure out a new and better way to prepare food.

While he admits that he is not perfect in the meals he prepares, meaning that some of them are not the most nutritious, he is Willing to experiment and strive to make a better meal from scratch.

I highlight my Mike because from my vantage point in the clinic, listening to patients with chronic disease all day long, the vast majority of them do not feel very comfortable cooking and experimenting in the kitchen. There is a certain level of dependency on processed foods, drive through, and lackluster meals made at home. There isn't much excitement these days in the kitchen or around the kitchen table.

This situation needs to change if we are going to rescue the health and wellness of our children and combat the chronic disease that millions upon millions of Americans face.

Health Planning for 202414 Dec 202300:30:27

This week on the radio, doctor Galati talked about Wellness strategies for the upcoming year in 2024. The key take away is that everybody has a good understanding of various health metrics including your weight and body mass index, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, liver chemistries, and blood glucose.

Good health never happens by accident. Wellness is something that is the result of paying attention to your own health details, and commitment to a healthy lifestyle.

I Have a Problem with UnTuckit Shirts22 Aug 201900:21:13

Obesity is the #1 public health concern we face in America. With 75% of adults overweight or obese, this is no small problem. This damaging obesity is the belly fat around the mid-section, which triggers inflammation and tissue damage throughout the body, including the heart and liver.

The untucked shirt movement, which doesn't even look that good from a fashion standpoint, is a cover-up for the expanding girths we are facing. Instead of realizing your clothes are getting tight (due to obesity), and plan to cut down what you're eating and exercise more, the only change is to get clothes that are designed to cover the problem-your gut.

We cannot simply hide the expanding waistline with a cleverly tailored shirt. Resist the untucked movement. Push away from the table, exercise more, and visit your healthcare team. It's that important.

Anahad O'Connor NY Times08 Aug 201900:32:16

It is always a pleasure to have Anahad O'Connor from the NY Times on the radio and podcast joining me. Anahad is one of the rising start at the NY Times, and has written some of the best medical and health related articles recently.

Over the past several weeks, he has written an article titled: Supplements and Diets for Heart Health Show Limited Proof of Benefit-

Some supplements may actually be harmful for cardiovascular health.

The second article we discussed was: Cutting 300 Calories a Day Shows Health Benefits. Yes...cutting out 300 calories a day may save your life (we hope). Both articles (and this podcast) will stimulate smart conversations, for sure.

Don't forget to reach out to me through our website and let me know what you think.

Ed Henry Donates His Liver14 Jul 201900:40:17

What a story! Ed Henry from Fox News donated about 30% of his liver to his sister that was in need of a liver transplant as a result of end-stage liver disease. Through a series of amazing twists, I was was asked to appear on Fox and Friends last week to help explain live liver donation, organ transplant, and the overall liver transplant process to the Fox and Friends audience. During this broadcast, Ed Henry announced his decision to donate, in a very emotional segment. For most that saw this genuine outpouring of emotion from Ed, they were very much unfamiliar with organ donation and transplant, let alone a partial liver donation and transplant, and the eventual regeneration of both the donor's liver (i.e. Ed) and his sister who received the transplant (i.e. 30% to 100% in a matter of weeks after transplant).

While we all enjoy these type of human interest stories on TV or the web, this story has struck a chord with America, seeing both the raw emotion displayed, but also the amazing good that organ donation and transplant achieves. Being a small part of this story has been an amazing experience for me, and one I can only hope continues to foster discussion, understanding, awareness, and hope for those thousands of people that are awaiting a transplant.

Check out a video highlight of the story.

For information on ORGAN DONATION, check out this link. Discuss with your family today your wish to be an organ and tissue donor.

Thanks for listening. Send me an e-mail with your comments.

Eat Like a Sicilian20 Jun 201900:33:54

In Episode 6, Dr. Joe Galati shares his experience while on the road traveling to Sicily. With his Sicilian roots, Dr. Galati digs deep into the Sicilian culture through the centuries, and how all of this has impacted the food that is eaten on this relatively small island just off the coast of Italy. Sicily embodies the best of the "Mediterranean Diet", but with their own twist. With a diet high in local vegetables, fruits, nuts, herbs and spices, and of course, olive oil, the Sicilian way of eating is optimal for health and wellness.

Dr. Galati is joined by Eszter Vajda, an expert new anchor, reporter, and journalist, who is the creator and co-executive producer of "You Me & Sicily!" with Alfred M. Zappala. A true Sicilian expert, Eszter shares some of her experiences with Dr. Galati about both the history and culture of Sicily, but also the food.

One of the olive oils from Sicily to consider using is ASARO Olive Oil.

We are all eager to hear from you regarding the Sicilian way of eating. Can you give it a try?

#Fentanyl Crisis08 Feb 202300:30:18
#Fentanyl accounts for 67% of overdose deaths in the past year, with over 100,000 people in the United states dying of drug overdose or drug poisoning.
The fentanyl crisis is truly the number one public health crisis that America faces. Many of these deaths are related to fentanyl being mixed in with other illegal drugs like heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana. It's being found that many users are completely unaware that they are actually being exposed to fentanyl. Small amounts of fentanyl can be toxic causing death.
George Joseph, founder and CEO of Positive Recovery Centers based in Houston TX, joins us today on the radio. George shares his lifetime of experience in addiction and recovery, and gives his advice on this very serious and complex problem.

Bagel Nutrition-Part 208 Jun 202400:52:54
This is Part 2 of our discussion on the nutrition of the bagel.
While we may be spending far too much time on the topic (how much can you really talk about the bagel?), I do think it is worthwhile to drive home the point that the "Better Bagel" on its own will not improve your health.
From a consumer standpoint, you are led to believe that a product such as this, allegedly, lower in carbohydrates, high in fiber, and lower in calorie, is the proverbial "cure all" to your ills.
As we stayed in the discussion, New York City, the quintessential capital of the bagel, is one of the thinnest cities in America. How could this be if their per capita intake of bagels leads the nation? It is not the bagel that is making America obese. It is a lifestyle of inactivity, consumption of processed foods, and a general disregard for one's own health and wellness. And so while there is nothing inherently toxic about this Better Bagel product that we're discussing, we all need to think long and hard about our own fate, and what lifestyle choices we need to make.

What is a FODMAP Diet?25 Jan 202300:17:54
So what is a FODMAP diet?

FODMAP stands for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols, which are short-chain carbohydrates (sugars) that the small intestine absorbs poorly. Some people experience digestive distress after eating them. Some of the symptoms that people may develop, if they are intolerant of these foods high in fodmap, include stomach bloating and distention, intestinal gas and flatulence, diarrhea, constipation, and cramps.

With a low FODMAP diet, you are eliminating foods that are high in FODMAP. Once your intestinal symptoms improve, it would be appropriate to slowly resume their consumption to see which one of these foods causes you intestinal problems. If you're fortunate to identify these foods, you would want to avoid or limit them while not worrying too much about the other foods that aren't problematic for you.

In this podcast, I speak with Lauren Mahesri, registered dietitian with Liver Specialists of Texas. Lauren will outline the approach to intestinal gas, the low FODMAP diet, the pros and cons of such a diet, and how to approach certain food sensitivities. For more information on FODMAP diet and foods that are both high and low, follow the links that we include for you below.

Career Success and Wellness Success?20 Jan 202300:06:51

This week we share with you a brief podcast episode which came from this past Sunday evening. On the radio, I talked about the various mentoring activities I been involved in over the past several years, working with high school students through young entrepreneur's. The theme of personal and business success is commitment, a sincere desire to achieve, put in the time, and do not take any shortcuts. It dawned on me that these same methodologies applied to your own good health. To remain healthy, you need to remain committed. You also need a sincere approach to your own health and not take shortcuts. Just like working towards a successful career takes time, not putting in the time for her own health is associated with less than adequate results.

Feel free to share this podcast with those you feel would benefit most. Of course we want you to follow us along on your favorite podcast site making sure you never miss a single episode.

Suffering a #stroke is a devastating medical complication. In this #podcast, we go over the various symptoms of stroke, the need to act quickly and initiate emergency medical services, and the risk factors of stroke. Ready for Emergency Surgery?01 Jan 202300:13:49
Happy 2023! For this podcast episode, I want to share with you an unexpected medical emergency I faced right before Christmas, which warranted emergent surgery. All turned out well, and on the grand scheme of things it brought to light an important health and wellness concept I want to share with you all.

Getting perfectly honest with yourself, are you, right now, prepare to undergo any kind of emergency surgery, emergency procedure, or face an unexpected health crisis? It's very well known that if you are not in optimal medical health, any type of minor emergency that you face is going to be associated with unwanted complications. Those individuals that have chronic medical conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, liver disease, and kidney disease are going to fare far worse than those without these chronic conditions. So with that said, what are you doing to prepare yourself for these possible scenarios? The vast majority of chronic illnesses can be medically managed (or better yet prevented) reducing the risk of these medical/surgical complications.

With the New Year starting, this would be a great objective for all of us. Take inventory, see what health and wellness issues need to be addressed, and get it taken care of.

"You Have Cancer"08 Aug 202200:39:22

This week on , we spent time talking about modifiable risk factors to reduce your chance of developing cancer. The special guest this week was oncologist Susan Escudier, who practices at Texas Oncology .

With regard to cancer, there are multiple modifiable lifestyle changes that can have a big impact on the eventual risk for cancer and its development. The American Cancer Society recently published data indicating that 42% of cancer cases and 45% of cancer deaths in the United states are linked to modifiable risk factors. In other words, these cases could be prevented. Based on recent data, that translates to 660,000 cancer cases and 265,000 cancer deaths that could have been prevented.

The main modifiable risk factors include smoking, secondhand smoke, obesity, excessive alcohol intake, eating red and processed meats, diets low in fruits and vegetables as well as dietary calcium, physical inactivity, UV radiation, and specific cancer associated infections including H. pylori, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, herpesvirus type 8, HIV, and human papilloma virus.

In the weeks to come on the radio, we are going to continue this series of modifiable lifestyle changes and focus on other disease states including heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, dementia, lung disease, and diabetes. Stay tuned for these upcoming programs. Make sure you sign up for our newsletter so that you stay up to date on all of these future learning activities will be sharing with you.

Wellness: Doing All You Can?17 Jul 202200:15:33

This is one of the shorter podcast episodes Doctors Galati is sharing with you. The central theme here is, once again, the cost of wellness. He shares a real-life story of a friend and colleague who has suddenly become ill. For most of us, these sudden illnesses are never planned or anticipated. They catch us when we least suspect it. As a result, ongoing lack of attention to your health and wellness does have its consequences when you are most vulnerable. If you have challenges with obesity, address it today; if you've been told that your physician that your cholesterol or blood sugar is just a “touch” elevated, address it today; if you just aren't feeling well, check in with your doctor today and get things addressed.

Heart Advice from Texas Heart Institute06 Jun 202200:15:27

This past week on Your Health First, Dr. Briana Costello with the Texas Heart Institute, shared her experience on metabolic syndrome and its role in heart disease and fatty liver. Metabolic syndrome generally consists of: obesity (specifically belly fat), pre or type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and increased levels of cholesterol. Fatty liver is seen in the vast majority of such cases of metabolic syndrome. Unfortunately, those with metabolic syndrome have an increased chance of developing serious heart complication - such as heart attack, stroke, and premature death.

  • We also share with you a new phrase to consider: "Making Visible the Invisible". Dr. Galati recently spoke in Las Vegas and shared this concept. All too often both patients and physicians are blind to medical problems that are seen in open sight. Seeing problems early is life saving.

Your Personal Dashboard01 Mar 202200:11:22
This past week on the radio, we had Natalie Amante, physician assistant at Liver Specialist of Texas, talking about understanding your personal dashboard.

We have talked about this topic extensively in the past, but it is always worth bringing up again. Considering the patients we see, especially those with acute and chronic liver disease, there is a general misunderstanding of the importance of abnormal labs and other testing results. To maintain one's health, it is necessary to fully understand the implications of these abnormal lab test results, and similarly, abnormal x-rays or scans that are done.

Increased Alcohol Abuse28 Mar 202400:26:27
Dr. Joe Galati last week was on the radio with Frank Morano on THE OTHER SIDE OF MIDNIGHT. The show airs every evening between 1:00-5:00 a.m. EST on 77-WABC out of New York. Dr. Galati was discussing new data from the CDC on increased deaths from alcohol over the past few years.

A new study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealing a significant increase in alcohol-related deaths in the United States, with nearly 500 Americans dying each day in 2021. The spike began during the Covid pandemic and continued to rise after lockdowns in 2020. The study highlights a higher death rate among men but a quicker increase among women. Factors contributing to the surge include pandemic stress and increased availability of alcohol through home-delivery services. Binge drinking is also on the rise, particularly among middle-aged adults. Policy suggestions to address this issue include increasing alcohol prices through taxes, limiting sales, and promoting counseling. Additionally, new research is linking alcohol use even in moderation to harmful effects on health, debunking previous beliefs about the health benefits of alcohol, including red wine.

#Nutrition and #Liver Questions22 Feb 202200:39:36
This week on YOUR HEALTH FIRST, we had the pleasure of interviewing 2 new team members of LIVER SPECIALISTS OF TEXAS.

Lauren McNamara, registered dietitian along with Natalie Amante, physician assistant, sat down and spoke with DR. JOE GALATI regarding the role of nutrition, obesity, and metabolic syndrome in the eventual development, and reversal, of non alcoholic fatty liver disease. Fatty liver disease is the leading cause of chronic inflammation of the liver, the leading cause of cirrhosis and liver cancer, and the leading disease of the liver that ultimately results in the need for a liver transplant.

The vast majority of the cases of fatty liver disease are a direct result of obesity, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol or triglycerides, and hypertension. Collectively these disorders are called metabolic syndrome.
