| #78 School Refusal or Avoidance: When Your Child CAN'T Go To School & How To Manage It As a Dad | 20 Feb 2024 | 00:51:29 | |
Parents often struggle with understanding and supporting their neurodivergent children, especially when it comes to issues like school avoidance and behavioral challenges. They want to find ways to connect with and support their children more effectively without feeling overwhelmed or confused by their behaviors. In this episode, Ed and Drew talk through the complexities of neurodiverse families with the amazing Penny Williams, a parenting coach specializing in ADHD and autism. Here are the top three takeaways from this enlightening conversation: 1. Embracing the Power of Yet: - Using the word "yet" at the end of statements can create a positive and growth-oriented mindset for parents and children alike. - It reassures that certain skills or abilities may not have developed yet, encouraging a more patient and understanding approach. 2. Creating a Collaborative Parenting Team: - Parents should strive to be on the same page, even if their parenting styles differ. - Staying informed about your child's activities and showing up at appointments and meetings can create a strong support system for your child. 3. Shifting Mindsets to Understand Behavior: - It's crucial to move from a behavior-based lens to a brain-based lens when interpreting a neurodivergent child's behavior. - Adopting a compassionate understanding and judgment-free approach is essential for effective communication and support. This episode provides valuable insights into understanding and supporting neurodiverse families, from embracing a growth-oriented mindset to fostering collaborative parenting and shifting perspectives on behavior. Listeners will gain a deeper understanding of their children's struggles and how to support them effectively, creating a more harmonious and supportive environment at home. We appreciate each and every one of our listeners for joining us on this journey. If you found this episode valuable, please consider sharing it with other parents who could benefit. Your feedback and support mean the world to us! As Penny Williams wisely said, "Parent the child you have, not the child you wish you had." Let's take a moment to reflect on this and strive to embrace and support our children in their unique journeys. About Penny Williams A parenting coach for neurodiverse families, Penny Williams is the award-winning author of four books on ADHD, including Boy Without Instructions, host of the Beautifully Complex Podcast, host of the annual Neurodiversity Summits, and co-creator of The Behavior Revolution Program, a parent training program designed to change the narrative on behavior and help parents celebrate and support their kids with ADHD or autism through neuroscience-backed insights, hard-won strategies, compassion, and guidance. Welcome back to The Dad Central Show! In today's episode, we have a special guest joining us - the talented Bryce Kenny, a professional Monster Jam driver and author. Bryce takes us on a journey through his experience as a father, sharing heartfelt insights and valuable lessons along the way. In the conversation Bryce delves into the idea that many fathers are fatherly to others but not always to their own children. He opens up about wanting his kids to look up to him as a leader and a source of inspiration, rallying them to chase their dreams. Bryce reveals his own struggles with imposter syndrome when he became a dad. He shares how the concept of "fake it till you make it," helped him at first, but he wanted more. He now goes by the saying, "Believe it till you become it," inspiring himself and others to believe in their dreams and the goals they want to achieve in their life and career. Our conversation takes an interesting turn as Bryce challenges the notion of sacrificing personal dreams for the sake of parenthood. He shares a moving story about a friend who gave up his career, but Bryce counters that he wants his children to witness him pursuing his dreams and learn from the pain and growth that come with it. Prepare to be touched as Bryce recounts a heartwarming conversation he had with his daughter, who expressed her desire for him to continue driving as Mohawk Warrior in Monster Jam. He believes that his daughter sees his growth as a father and recognizes the importance of nurturing relationships, imperfections and all. Bryce also reflects on his relationship with his grandfather and father, who have had a significant impact on his life. He sheds light on the valuable life lessons and wisdom he learned from his late grandfather, which inspired him to write his book, "Geared for Life." Tune in as Bryce Kenny shares his journey of discovering his purpose through Monster Jam and how it influenced his identity as a father. With a mix of inspiration, wisdom, and laughter, this episode is packed with valuable takeaways for all dads out there. About Bryce Kenny Growing up, Bryce’s passion was in Top Fuel dragracing, traveling the country with his grandfather competing in a race car capable of 300mph in just 4 seconds! Those miles traveled in the rig with his grandfather, Doc Sipple, would prove to be the mentorship that would equip Bryce with the passion and skill sets to fulfill his purpose – to use the platform of motorsports to change people’s lives. Bryce believes that while there are no secret formulas to life, there are gears that we must learn to shift in and out of at the right time. These gears are our foundational beliefs that guide the actions we take towards living the life we’ve always dreamed of. Gears like being driven by purpose, failing faster, and becoming built for others all require a decision in the midst of life’s toughest challenges to make that shift in order to get unstuck, find momentum, and start thriving again. Life requires us to shift gears constantly, and Bryce is passionate about helping others find that next gear they never knew they had. Bryce is now a Professional Monster Jam driver as the Great Clips Mohawk Warrior, setting a Guinness World Record for the fastest speed in a monster truck in 2021 and being the first driver in the sport’s history to hit 100mph. Getting his start in 2016, Kenny recorded his first Freestyle win in his first year. Kenny earned the 2019 Save of the Year and 2021 Outreach Award. The driver of the Great Clips Mohawk Warrior has also played a role in Monster Jam TV coverage. His ability to represent brands and strategic partners like Great Clips, build family-friendly fan bases, and attain coveted awards in the sport makes Bryce a bright star in Monster Jam! Links:

| #62 Raising Super Learners: How 10 Minutes a Day with Dad Boosts Kids Grades | 23 Oct 2023 | 00:31:53 | |
In our latest episode Drew Soleyn and Ed Gough Jr. shed light on the challenges and opportunities fathers face when it comes to being actively engaged in their children's education. They highlight the financial stress many fathers feel while striving to provide for their families, as well as the lack of support available to enable fathers to be involved in the parenting process. The study we reference in the episode finds that fathers have a unique role in their child's educational outcomes and that increased father involvement from an early age can positively impact a child's educational development. Spending just 10 minutes a day engaging in activities like reading, playing, singing, and drawing with our children can make a significant difference in their educational attainment. Action steps for fathers include spending quality time with their children, reading to them before bed, and engaging in playful and educational activities regularly. We believe that education is not limited to just classroom learning, and fathers can also add to children's development when they create fun and memorable life experiences that help children develop non-academic skills too. We also explore the importance of broader structures and systems to support fathers, such as paternity leave and employer support. Dad Central is proud to offer training to family service and early childhood education organizations on how to engage dads effectively through our evidence based program, Super Dads Super Kids. This program provides practical tools for dads to thrive and be actively involved in their children's lives. The episode emphasizes the long-term social impacts of investing in fathers' involvement, such as improved healthcare and better career development for our children. We also discuss the division in parental involvement and stress the importance of dads building positive relationships with their children and supporting their education. As part of our commitment to supporting fathers, we have recently launched a new fatherhood community called Dad Mentor. Dad Mentor aims to transform the fatherhood experience by providing dads with the support and guidance they need to thrive. Through this community, dads can feel in control, stay calm and patient with their children, and guide them with confidence. Link to article and study referenced in this episode:

| #61 Why Role Models Matter During Fatherhood and How They Shape Our Children's Lives | 09 Oct 2023 | 00:33:41 | |
In this episode, we delve deep into the importance of parental role models and their impact on our children's development. Drew Soleyn and Ed Gough Jr. discuss the significance of being a role model for our children. They share personal stories, reflections, and insights on how our own experiences with our fathers, or the absence of a positive role model, can shape our approach to parenting. The hosts touch on the importance of finding positive role models in our lives, whether they are biological fathers, mentors, or even inspirational figures we encounter briefly. They explore the concept that role models can show both positive and negative behaviors, and how we can learn from these experiences to become the best parents we can be. The episode also highlights the significance of the early years (0-6 years) in setting the foundation for our children's development. By having healthy, positive, and genuine role models, we can provide the influence and guidance our children need during these crucial years. We understand that being a dad without a positive role model can be challenging, and it can lead to self-doubt, shame, and regret. That's why we're here. Our mission at Dad Central is to support you on your dad journey, helping you avoid pitfalls and giving you the tools necessary to become the best role model for your children. | #60 Picky Eater? Anneke Hobson Says Never Do This and It Will Help To Reduce Stress | 02 Oct 2023 | 00:54:56 | |
Welcome back to The Dad Central Show! Today, we have a very special guest joining us on the podcast. We're thrilled to have Anneke Hobson, a passionate nutritionist and dedicated parent, here to share her insights and experiences on fostering a healthy relationship with food for children. In this episode, Anneke opens up about her own journey with food, starting from her experience observing a nanny who used forceful tactics to get children to eat, leading to problematic behaviors. This powerful experience ignited a passion within her to help parents feed their children in a more positive and nurturing way. Anneke dives into various topics, including the benefits of meat alternatives, the importance of role modeling as parents, and the concept of repeated neutral exposure when it comes to expanding children's food preferences. She also shares the research on how significant dads are to helping kids develop healthy eating habits and the one tactic every dad uses that only makes things worse! Another essential topic discussed was the issue of pressuring children to eat vegetables. She emphasized that this approach often leads to counterpressure and resistance, ultimately not solving picky eating behavior. Instead, she advocated for promoting a neutral and relaxed approach to food. Anneke also provides practical tips for common challenges for busy parents including eating out and traveling with healthy snacks. This episode is filled with practical, real and positive solutions to the challenge of picky eaters, but will also challenge dads to take a more active role in helping kids develop a healthy relationship with food for the rest of their lives. You'll want to take these messages to heart and apply them to your parenting journey. About Anneke Hobson Anneke Hobson is a registered dietitian and has worked in public health, non-profit, and private practice settings. She became a dietitian because she loves learning and helping people improve their lives through nutrition. When she started her first nutrition degree, it felt like magic that dietitians could help people get better, and feel better, with food. It still does! Anneke holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Nutrition from Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University) and a Master of Public Health in Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of Toronto. When not working as The Kiwi RD, she runs an organization called Drawdown Dietetics, which works to integrate climate change mitigation with the practice of nutrition and dietetics. Links:
