In the world of classical music, the collaboration between composers and performers often leads to remarkable creations that resonate deeply with audiences. In this episode of Crushing Classical, host Jennet Ingle engages in a captivating conversation with composer Marjorie Rusche and pianist Clare Longendyke about the upcoming premiere of Rusche's Eclipse Piano Concerto, with the South Bend Symphony Orchestra on March 15 2026.

Marjorie M. Rusche is an internationally performed award winning composer who combines romantic, modernist, and vernacular influences in her music. Dr. Rusche composes for opera, music theater, orchestra, chorus, dance, soloists, and a variety of vocal and instrumental chamber ensembles.

Pianist Clare Longendyke is a soloist, chamber musician, and fearless advocate for new music who brings daring repertoire and thoughtful storytelling to the concert stage. Her performances are marked by imaginative programming, charismatic stage presence, and a gift for weaving together contemporary works and classical favorites.

Together, they are bringing Rusche's Eclipse Piano Concerto to the stage this March, and the creative process of this collaboration is worth exploring!

After weeks of hustle, I'm finally in a phase where I can focus on practicing and enjoying music for the sheer joy of it. It’s a refreshing change!  

But I know many of us feel the weight of expectations to always be productive. We think we should be working harder, promoting ourselves more, or achieving something grand.  

What if we allowed ourselves to explore different creative directions and passions?  

Our artistic journeys don’t have to be linear. It’s okay to embrace joy and creativity, even if it doesn’t directly pay the bills right now.  (As long as SOMETHING is paying the bills, let's be real!) 

So, the next time you find yourself feeling guilty for pursuing what makes you happy, remember: your artistry matters!
